Of course I answered truthfully!

I'm sorry. I'm lying. What game is this?

[–]melisanyans 59 points60 points ago

Super Paper Mario. One of the levels is about a weird lizard-like guy who owns this whole castle plagued with vague references.

[–]salenth 134 points135 points ago

I played it at my ex's house once. At the beginning of the game it went through the whole "Save the princess, save the world" speech and asked if I accepted my mission. I said no, just because I like the clever ways some games force you to choose yes. This one? Game over screen. I laughed for five minutes.

[–]DBrody6 48 points49 points ago

Then cry because you have to sit through the 15 minute intro cutscene again :|

[–]Draber-Bien 53 points54 points ago

This was my exact reaction "oh cool, I can answer no!" 15mins later "WHY THE FUCK DID I HAVE TO PRESS NO! I KNEW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN!"

[–]zentenai 15 points16 points ago

I think we all must've selected no, because I remember doing that as well.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

I did, but on the 3rd time I was asked, I cracked and said yes cause I figured it would just loop again like most other games do.

[–]Octosteel -1 points0 points ago

I feel like the only person that loved this game.

[–]Tin_Whiskers 0 points1 point ago

Super Paper Mario? You're not alone - it was amazing! Good early Wii title, sank plenty of hours into it. After I've cleared a few more games (Xenoblade, Saints Row are on the docket right now) I might just have to re-visit SPM.

[–]Bowlero 1 point2 points ago

Then cry again, because you wanted it to be as good as the first two.

[–]patislow 4 points5 points ago

Super Paper Mario lacked the charm of the first two. I think I would have liked it a lot more if I hadn't been comparing it to thousand year door the entire time. I don't know if you've ever been over to /r/papermario but they call it the game that shall not be named.

[–]Lakituz 2 points3 points ago

The Thousand-Year Door is without a doubt one of my favorite games of all time, but hell, Super Paper Mario doesn't deserve all the hate it gets. It's not as good, but it sure is a solid title.

[–]Tin_Whiskers 0 points1 point ago

You nailed it. It's not the same game style as the previous entries, but it's still a damn fun game.

[–]Lunavia 1 point2 points ago

Hey, we don't do that. Not most of us.

[–]Fefnir60 19 points20 points ago

Here's the video.

[–]dizzykiwi3 15 points16 points ago

The reason why this is always a good choice: Gems like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uZX60akANU

[–]Jetpack123 1 point2 points ago

Damnit there needs to be a collection of these

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points ago

I've played through it twice now and I didn't know this. Gonna go try it tonight.

[–]Sylocat 6 points7 points ago

Be prepared to watch the intro cutscene again.

[–]ZakWolf 3 points4 points ago

In Super Mario Galaxy many of the options are either; Yes or Okay.

[–]Gooberpatrol66 1 point2 points ago

I didn't want to do this, but my brother made me. He walked out of the room laughing while I had to sit through the incredibly long cutscene again.

[–]voidKoala 1 point2 points ago

Golden Sun did this as well. If at first you choose not to save the world, the game ends and I think it tells you that the world was destroyed.

[–]Boolderdash 0 points1 point ago

Paper Mario: TTYD had a similar thing before the last boss, you're asked if you want to join them and rule the world together. If you say "yes" you game-over and have to watch a really long cutscene again.

[–]melisanyans 0 points1 point ago

Funny, I did the same thing!

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points ago

I for one get pissed when these games with choices like advancing the main story fuck you over when you choose not to do something and they find a way to make you do it anyways.

[–]anAccountUntaken 0 points1 point ago

That sums up all quests in Skyrim.

[–]eaturbrainz 6 points7 points ago

weird lizard-like guy

He's an otaku lizard.

[–]SonicFlash01 4 points5 points ago

My favorite level in a game that was a lot better than I went in thinking

[–]DCWombat 20 points21 points ago

I love Super Paper Mario! I've been playing The Thousand Year Door and I'm hitting that up next.

[–]Jojopolo 19 points20 points ago

I gotta say, I love the Paper Mario series, but Super Paper Mario was a bit of a letdown for me. Honestly, it was very cool and fun, but they pretty much threw out the RPG aspects of it, which make it Paper Mario. Still a fun game, but made me a bit sad.

[–]Bowlero 4 points5 points ago

It was too easy. Kind of like Mario 3DS, but not as good because you expected more. Like you said, they took out the best aspects.

[–]Rabiatic 2 points3 points ago

Too easy?! The last level took me AGES to finish. Maybe I just suck, though.

[–]EldraziLackey -3 points-2 points ago

Hello, nice to meet you.

Yes.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]gabbydarlinggg 10 points11 points ago

It was different. It was a combination of Super Mario and Paper Mario. If you're also a fan of Super Mario, then go for it. It was a big change, but I still found it fun. The Thousand Year Door is by far the best though.

[–]EldraziLackey 4 points5 points ago

But it didn't have the RPG elements that set Super Paper Mario apart from every other mario game. I personally was very excited for SPM, and bought it launch day (something I'd never done before and will never do again). I was sorely disappointed. As a Mario game, it was good enough. As a part of the Paper Mario series, I found it very lacking.

[–]gabbydarlinggg 1 point2 points ago

I do agree. I wish that they would come out with a regular paper mario for the Wii. Maybe for the Wii U?

[–]EldraziLackey 5 points6 points ago

The 3DS one, Sticker Star, looks like it might be closer to the originals. If it's any good, I'll be getting a 3DS so I can play it.

[–]geauxtig3rs 1 point2 points ago

If we look at the fact that the Paper Mario series is a spiritual successor to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, than SMRPG is the absolute best one...no ifs, ands, or buts.

[–]LowCarbs 0 points1 point ago

What made SMRPG so much better than the first two paper Marios? If we look at story, gameplay, and mechanics, they're basically the same. I found the Paper Mario games to be better just because of their unique aesthetic quality.

[–]geauxtig3rs 0 points1 point ago

Mechanics weren't the same, if you ask me...For one, SMRPG has an isometric layout. I found the characters to be infinitely more original and interesting as well.

[–]htwhooh 2 points3 points ago

Although it gameplay is more platforming-oriented, Super Paper Mario is a fine game that I highly recommend. In no way a bad game.

[–]zentenai 2 points3 points ago

Actually it's a lot like the previous Paper Mario games, except that killing enemies is more like classic Mario.

[–]jaybud4 -2 points-1 points ago

The combat system was the entire point of the first two, though.

I will have no part in any Paper Mario game in which you can't kill the enemies with the background.

[–]SomeMetroid 5 points6 points ago

Seriously, give it a go. It's really fun.

[–]MrBlueberryMuffin 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, Nintendo should never innovate ever.

[–]DCWombat 0 points1 point ago

I played it once, I liked it.

[–]adius 0 points1 point ago

The gameplay is somewhat interesting, but it's mostly background entertainment that fills out the edges around the jokes and crazy story

[–]orenica 45 points46 points ago

Loved this game. Was not expecting a Mario game to make me giggle so much, probably one of the most underrated games on the Wii!

[–]Sylocat 16 points17 points ago

It's one of the strangest and most fascinating games of all time.

[–]iltalldude 15 points16 points ago

It gets a lot of heat (basically because its not paper mario or thousand year door) but the play style was fantastic and the commentary hilarious

fantastic game

[–]milkohol 4 points5 points ago

This level was cute but it wasn't a very good follow up to the first two. I was onboard pretty hard for taking the gameplay to real time but they just made it so tedious and boring. The cutscenes in particular just dragged on forever. There was neat stuff in there like using the pixel things to traverse the world and solve puzzles but it was just mired down with too much bullshit.

[–]thetardis_isonfire 4 points5 points ago

I freaking love super paper mario, one of the first games I ever got for wii.

[–]Shoryucas 2 points3 points ago

http://www.metacritic.com/game/wii/super-paper-mario

It's hardly underrated. People just don't really talk about it because it's a structured single player game, not leaving much room for any unique experiences.

As a side note if you haven't played all the other Paper Mario games, do so. They're all just as funny. Same with the Mario & Luigi games for GBA & DS.

[–]evoim3 1 point2 points ago

Oh God, how I long for a sequel to Bowsers inside Story.

Those 3 games were the pert complimentary RPG's to the console Paper Mario Series. Maybe since Paper Mario s coming to a handheld, maybe Mario and Luigi will come to Wii u?

[–]Shoryucas 1 point2 points ago

Yeah. That would be a dream come true, but I doubt it. Still excited for Paper Mario though. Definitely getting a 3DS for that one.

[–]LoyalCassius 79 points80 points ago

Or worse, complaining about things they knew full well before buying the game, such as DRM and release day DLC.

[–]osmigos 22 points23 points ago

It's not like knowing ahead of time is going to somehow allow them to obtain a copy of the game without those things... >.>

[–]LoyalCassius 21 points22 points ago

When it comes to the free market every dollar/euro/sea shell you spend is a vote. If you buy games that have aggressive DRM and what not, you are essentially voting to include those things in every after wards. Whining does nothing if you still bought the product.

[–]osmigos 8 points9 points ago

What if I told you some people who complain didn't actually buy the product?

[–]fall_ark 20 points21 points ago

Then they are complaining about a product they didn't buy! Ha!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

I don't know. I want to affect change, but it's not really possible if all I do is withhold my dollar. Bitching about something might get other people to stop throwing money at stupid business practices.

[–]Phallic 2 points3 points ago

Exactly. The "Don't buy it + bitch about it" technique is sometimes the best you can do.

[–]thatfunnyfeeling 0 points1 point ago

All those people that complained about the Mass Effect 3 ending didn't buy it?

[–]TheCakeBandito 0 points1 point ago

And you knew the ending before you bought it?

[–]thatfunnyfeeling 0 points1 point ago

I knew enough to never be a first year buyer on anything, from movies to games to consoles to consumer electronics devices.

[–]Kerrigore 1 point2 points ago

Um, wait.

So the OP is saying people shouldn't complain about games they don't own.

And you're saying that it's even worse if people complain after having bought the game.

So basically, no one should complain, ever, at all. Got it.

[–]LoyalCassius 0 points1 point ago

I think OP's comic is about people whine about gameplay aspects of things like COD or BF3 without having played the game. People can whine after having bought the game too; I just wish they wouldn't whine about things they knew would happen before they bought it. Like the Mass Effect 3 ending. They didn't know it would be unsatisfying when they bought it.

[–]zmobchomper 0 points1 point ago

I don't want to hear any more about the Mass Effect 3 ending. That's gaming entitlement if I've ever heard it. The writers and developers made the ending they wanted to make on their own project and somehow they're in the wrong.

[–]Shoryucas 0 points1 point ago

Preferably, yes.

[–]lolwutpear 0 points1 point ago

I'm constantly wrought with guilt whenever I think about Battlefield 3 for this reason. So embarrassing.

[–]LukaCola 2 points3 points ago

So people are actually happy about Blizzard's decision?

[–]LoyalCassius 18 points19 points ago

At least happy enough to spend $60 on a game they can't play offline.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]LukaCola -1 points0 points ago

How many people can you play with on D3 max?

[–]lollermittens 6 points7 points ago

Quatro.

[–]LukaCola 5 points6 points ago

That's hardly massive.

[–]CartmanVT 0 points1 point ago

Yet Phantasy Star Online/Universe were considered MMOs to an extent. They even had monthly fees. All the fighting was instanced (4/8 players) while the lobbies could have a larger number of people. All perspective.

[–]LukaCola 5 points6 points ago

Quote from its description

A single-player action adventure spanning multiple planets, and a robust online multi-player component.

If we're going to be comparing this did also have an offline mode, it doesn't even consider itself a true to form MMO.

[–]akebeth 0 points1 point ago

And man was that a great game.

[–]LowCarbs 0 points1 point ago

You can't play MMOs in single player mode.

[–]setrakakan -1 points0 points ago

Not happy, but not upset... more "Don't give a fuck"

[–]Antrix32 2 points3 points ago

Thats what bugs me about the Diablo 3 complaints. Yea, i get it, the DRM is bad...but people have known about it for about a year prior to release, did you expect it to change suddenly?

[–]cardfire 0 points1 point ago

I told you I was going to shit inside your birthday cake! Why are we still talking about this?

[–]Gougeru 3 points4 points ago

I don't know why everybody get's so angry over companies using DRM, they just want to make money for the games they made...

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

Here's a quick example: DRM prevented me from installing a game I bought, so instead, I pirated / cracked it because that version had no DRM. To sum it up, most DRM doesn't prevent people from pirating and usually just pisses off paying customers.

[–]Gougeru -1 points0 points ago

DRM provides some protection and sends a small moral message to people. Just look at the Witcher Two: A DRM free game that sold a little over one million copies and had 4 million pirated...

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

There's no justifying piracy (unless you're Captain Jack Sparrow), however making more advanced DRM which makes it harder for paying customers isn't the solution to pirating.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

You're right that it does provide some protection. It prevents people with no technical know-how from pirating the game (it'd be easier for them to buy it than figure out how to pirate it). And depending on the DRM, it could cause a delay in a crack release causing the impatient to buy it. In my opinion, DRM should be removed from a game a couple months after release. They'll protect their game while their sales are most likely highest, a crack will most likely have been released already rendering the DRM useless, and now everyone is somewhat happy.

In all likeliness, it's probably a terrible idea, but I like to think it would work haha.

[–]Pulsar391 -2 points-1 points ago

But! But! If I can just make enough butthurt comments on the internet, Bioware and EA will remake ME3 and give me the release day DLC for free!

[–]yourfrigginguide 16 points17 points ago

You can't hold me accountable for every action I've ever done.

[–]Alt_ 4 points5 points ago

Yes we can. What would be the point if we couldn't?

[–]TheRollingBones 9 points10 points ago

A good representation of why I love the Paper Mario series. I think Thousand Year Door may be in my top 10 games of all time. Played the crap outta that one when I was around 11 and still love it

[–]mmine1 2 points3 points ago

Oh man, I remember getting the game. I left my GameCube on for a month straight because I didn't wanna turn it on again after shutting it off so I could play it more. I also remember printing guides for every little thing because I was young.

[–]jklantern 4 points5 points ago

We love you Paper Mario Series.

[–]bryster126 3 points4 points ago

For those of you who are feeling nostalgic, chuggaconroy is mid-way into a let's play of this game

[–]Metrobi 1 point2 points ago

I don't think the game is old enough for nostalgia just yet...

[–]bigsphinxofquartz 0 points1 point ago

It is a five year old game now, isn't it? That's getting there.

[–]LowCarbs 0 points1 point ago

Eh, isn't nostalgia just anything that brings back memories? Memories don't have to be old.

[–]PopeJohnPaulII 2 points3 points ago

NOPE! Time to come online and rant about a game I have played, Super Paper Mario. Here is my problem with this game, the grind and tedium. For instance there is a section of the game where you are locked in a dungeon and have to work for slave wages in order to pay off a lamp or something. You need something like 100,000 coins and you can get 1 coin every 10 seconds or so. Now luckily the game doesn't make you get all 100,000, you only need a small portion. However that small portion is still 10 solid minutes of hitting jump and nothing else just jump.

Then there is the 100 door challenge garbage. You beat 100 boring levels in the light world, then 100 boring levels in the dark world (twice), also I should mention by boring I mean repetitive, slow, easy and time consuming. So you beat all these levels and you finally get to a boss fight that makes no sense. Oh, and if you loose this boss fight? 100 boring levels again.

This game had some neat things but stuff like this was garbage.

[–]Deputy_Dan 4 points5 points ago

NERRRRRRRRRRRR Nope.

[–]Stereosub 0 points1 point ago

Upvotes for everyone because Paper Mario!

[–]MikeyJayRaymond 0 points1 point ago

I have a friend who complains about the Mass Effect 3 endings to this day, even though he has never played them. To be fair, I have played through them myself, and I very strongly dislike them for their inconsistencies and missteps.

However, I have a problem with someone who complains about games without ever playing them. That's like saying Halo is terrible because it has aliens and you've never played the game before (I used to be like that, I love Halo now). It's irritating, especially when they're on your side, to have someone who complains about anything yet is completely ignorant of the material they complain about.

TL;DR: have friend who complains about shit that he never plays. He's an A-grade asshole.

[–]idwolf 0 points1 point ago

Well... I don't love it. :/

[–]dbburgess98 -3 points-2 points ago

false

[–]EldraziLackey -2 points-1 points ago

I was really excited about this game until I played it. And then I wasn't. It wasn't a bad game, it just wasn't Paper Mario.

[–]awesomebbq 4 points5 points ago

No, specifically people who hate CoD just because they've hopped on the bandwagon.

[–]LowCarbs 0 points1 point ago

It seems like there's becoming an even bigger bandwagon for people that are against the people who are on the CoD-hating bandwagon.

[–]chinoz219 -2 points-1 points ago

i was angry the whole time i played this game, was expecting RPG like Paper mario 1 and TYD, i was so angry that i barely remember the plot of the game.
