I really like the idea of unlimited morality.

Then die.

[–]ChadwickHenryWard 2 points3 points ago

It wasn't very popular the last time I said this on Reddit, but I don't consider myself better off dead because I can only run three miles in a day. I actually think that to say so is pretty silly.

[–]Arthonnen 0 points1 point ago

absolutely. But that's not the point. As a scientist, did the man know he was going to die? It was a perceived outcome based on limited data. He didn't actually know he was gonna die; and I think if there's reasonable doubt, then we shouldn't know. The only way to find out if you will or not is to try it. The same could be said about leaving your home. Certainly more risks have more of a chance of negative consequences than others. So how much risk are you willing to take?

You take a remarkably blase attitude towards your own death (or maybe just the speakers'.) The same could be said for jumping off a cliff, but do you jump off every cliff you encounter just to see what will happen? Remember, you don't know you're going to die from it, so not doing it is just placing unnecessary limits on yourself.

Plateaus, remember the part about plateaus. Pushing limits is a gradual thing and further he was not seeking death he was seeking improvement at what point is jumping off cliffs improving yourself?

[–]Arthonnen 0 points1 point ago

that's kinda skewed. How many cliffs do you know of that don't kill anyone? unless they're under a certain amount of feet, not too many. You try to to read too hard into it. and you missed the part that I said about a resonable amount of doubt. There is relatively little doubt that I will die from jumping off of a mile high cliff. There is however a considerable amount of doubt from jumping off a ten foot high cliff. The trick is to find which cliffs you can jump off of, relatively safely, and jump off of those first. There will always be some danger involved, but to jump to the conclusion that I have a blase attitude towards death is very illogical.

This is a massive slippery slope fallacy.

And there are limits. Some of them you can move slowly over time, some you can blast through completely, and some are completely immutable. Limits are important. If I didn't limit myself, I would be completely disabled or dead by now.

Of course you can also limit yourself too much, and prevent yourself from living the best life possible.

This quote seems to indicate that you should never stop pushing your limits. But there are too many limits to push, and you cannot push them all all the time. You have to choose.

Yeah, I'm sorry, but this is the kinda physical fascism that put me off the martial arts. Bruce could have done with lightening up and chilling the fuck out a bit more. He might still be alive if he had.

[–]question-sleep 1 point2 points ago

I'm a fan of Bruce, but am inclined to agree with you, JackRawlinson. (Your name sounds like a TV detective.)

[–]Arthonnen 2 points3 points ago

he might not have been the same martial artist had he chilled the fuck out, and we would not have the same role model.

[–]question-sleep 1 point2 points ago

Can we not get so far into this hypothetical that we forget that it could never have happened any differently? Time is time. It's already done. This is all just speculation and there is no need to start an argument over it.

[–]Arthonnen 0 points1 point ago

apologies. I got a little miffed over someone telling the great Bruce Lee to cut the martial arts fanaticism down a notch.

[–]Swampfoot 0 points1 point ago

"Physical Fascism" - a perfect term for the kind of jock worship I've seen all my life, but could never come up with a good formulation of words for it.

Thank you.

This said by a man who died at 33.

[–]Almafeta 4 points5 points ago

... because he was prescribed Equagesic, a particularly toxic painkiller.

[–]spacecadet84 4 points5 points ago

Which he was probably taking for chronic joint pain.

Again, a great martial artist, but there is a price to be paid for ignoring your limits.

[–]Swampfoot 0 points1 point ago

Wikipedia says 32?

[–]AloneIntheCorner 0 points1 point ago

Ok, 32.

[–]CyberDagger -1 points0 points ago

Jesus also died at 33! Connection?

Thanks for sharing. I really needed to hear that today.

I wish I had Bruce Lee as a trainer.

[–]Zombies_hate_ninjas 0 points1 point ago

I wasn't aware Bruce Lee was atheist. I never heard him speak of religion or spirituality. So it fits.

I practice Jeet Kune Do and Wing Chung, I love Bruce. I love his positivity. He never stopped believing in himself, his students, or humanity as a whole. He is remembered because of this. His death was unexpected and a tragedy. Think on how the world would be had he lived longer.

[–]YeaDudeImOnReddit[S] 0 points1 point ago

there was one interview where he was asked if he believed in god and he said something to the effect of Honestly I do not.

[–]Zombies_hate_ninjas 0 points1 point ago

Cool. That's a bold statement in the 60's and 70's. Especially with him having to deal with racism towards being Chinese.

I learn more of him all the time.
