  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

This reminds me of Sim City.

[–]a1579 22 points23 points ago

Nokia made a beautiful 3D model of the city, it's exactly like Sim City. And it goes on and on and on...

[–]Rubernstein 3 points4 points ago

[–]XZlayeD 1 point2 points ago

how does Nokias 3d models and viewing engine compare to googles? that renders so easily!

[–]nexusaspect 0 points1 point ago

That was awesome

[–]biocunsumer 0 points1 point ago

Shit, that's pretty amazing, I followed the pike from downtown Boston to one of the highschools in my town a few towns over, damn near flawless.

[–]naardvark 5 points6 points ago

The donut strategy. Nice.

[–]hyperforce 0 points1 point ago

You put gifts in the middle!

[–]zangorn 1 point2 points ago

It really is a winning city design too. The density is enough for cute shops and restaurants everywhere and a subway but sparse enough to be beautiful and pleasant to walk around or bike in.

[–]SkySilver 1 point2 points ago

Or Anno.

[–]Maklite 0 points1 point ago

Or a lesser known game, Gangsters: Organized Crime.

[–]b_loodbeard 11 points12 points ago

That's a great picture! I had to check for myself on Google Earth, and yup, that's Barcelona.

Whats with the random white sections?

[–]ALTSuzzxingcoh 1 point2 points ago

3d buildings without textures displayed.

[–]ho0k -2 points-1 points ago

God cums from the heavens once a year and shoots a wicked load all over barcelona. This is why the women are so beautiful. There is so much god-cum everywhere women have trouble staying un-pregnant and end up having gorgeous big titted goddess-like offspring. I hope that should clear up some of the confusion about the white spots.

[–]hupajoob 11 points12 points ago

Waiting for this to be an animated gif where the city folds in half.

[–]PhilipGreenbriar 9 points10 points ago

this seriously just blew my mind. I had no idea this is what Barcelona looked like.

[–]addavenger41 2 points3 points ago

L'Eixample (pronounced eechampla in the local language, Catalan) Designed and constructed in the late 1800s, it was one of the first purposely designed city districts. The holes in the middle where meant to be communal gardens shared by the residents of each block but over the years most were filled with more apartments. As for the Sagrada Familia: one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Gaudi was a true genius and his amazing work is all over the city. Check out Parc Guell, Casa Batlo and la Pedrera for more examples of his awesomeness.

[–]stareattheart 1 point2 points ago

I was there eeee.

[–]hungryhoneybadger 5 points6 points ago

Did anyone else immediately think of the layout of the city that Ellen Page turns upside down in the first dream?

[–]Vondruke 1 point2 points ago

Isn't that Paris?

[–]fluba 1 point2 points ago

This seems really awesome. It's hard to tell the quality of the buildings, but I love the concept of having the center area in each place.

One thing I was wondering is if each center has a different (or one of a selection) purpose? So one block has a small market, one has a soccer field, one has basketball, etc.

[–]conundrummed 2 points3 points ago

I lived in Barcelona in this district (I can see my old apartment in this photo!), and the centers of the blocks don't really have much more than little courtyards (apartments have expanded into lots of them). However, each barrio, or borough, has a different style of architecture, and a different vibe. The neighborhood here is l'eixample, and it's the most structured part of the city. Other areas aren't so square. Barcelona is beautiful.

[–]fluba 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for replying. I was really hoping someone could weigh-in on the subject. The different styles of architecture is really cool. The closest things I have come to experience like this (really far off comparison) are suburban neighborhoods.

Looking at them in Google Maps/Earth, they all ten to have a full-circle affect so people can traverse a neighborhood and come back to where they started. Houses look very much the same except for color/additions (deck, shed, etc). There is a small sense of community in these neighborhoods but mostly for gatherings and home-life assistance. Say someone lost a family member, emergency, or need help with something.

I feel like the neighborhoods in Barcelona have a better chance of sharing cultural similarities than suburban neighborhoods here in America. Personally, I think that would be awesome - having people with similar ancestries or family practices nearby.

[–]mungd 1 point2 points ago

I was wondering something similar... like if each of the blocks had a different demographic or culture or set of rules associated with it. For instance if you said you were from block ABC instead of XYZ it gave a person an idea about where you come from, who you are, and what you represent.

Strange.

[–]F4il3d 1 point2 points ago

Cool, "La sagrada familia" is one of my favorite buildings, however from the ground you cannot appreciate the nice orderly surroundings.

[–]Krases 1 point2 points ago

I designed a small city similar to this.

Not really meant to be functional, just cool looking.

[–]straightedgefred 2 points3 points ago

I haven't been traveling a lot, but the vibe in Barcelona was fantastic. The best city i've been to. Very laid back in a way. Next on the list is New York.

[–]im_only_sleeping_ 1 point2 points ago

Is this seriously what Barcalona looks like - roads/buildings seem too blocked in squares

(photoshop!?!)

[–]Jay_Normous 15 points16 points ago

It's the new part of the city. The old part by the ocean is much more chaotic. like so

[–]merdock379 0 points1 point ago

Cool. Where is Camp Nou in that pic?

[–]ethzilla 1 point2 points ago

This is a tiny area of the city. Camp Nou is about 3 miles almost due west of there.

[–]googooga_joob 0 points1 point ago

thank you cerda

[–]Vee_Vee 1 point2 points ago

I don't normally complain about HDR, but this photograph is awful. It would be so much better if you could make out the details.

[–]oshen 0 points1 point ago

i think there was a smudgey finger on the lens.

[–]chewyice 0 points1 point ago

This looks like how I set up my island cities in the Anno games.

[–]SkySilver 0 points1 point ago

How do you build non-island cities in Anno?

[–]foxytr900 0 points1 point ago

So grid!

[–]to_string_david 0 points1 point ago

the intersections are a little better as well, this way cars and peds both have a little bit of buffer. a car can start the turn and wait for the peds to cross without being stuck directly in the intersection.

[–]AngryProbe 0 points1 point ago

Why the hole in the middle of every building?? obviously its a courtyard of some sort. Just different from what we are use to here in America, where everybit of space is used for occupants.

[–]blackpanther6389 0 points1 point ago

Looks organized.

[–]bmg50barrett 0 points1 point ago

Omg please HD 1920 x 1080 wallpaper anyone? Google yielded no results...

[–]Rubernstein 0 points1 point ago

Seems like someone had a bit too much fun with the copy paste commands.

[–]brianpepinski 0 points1 point ago

I got lost just imagining myself walking the streets

[–]Howard_Beale 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, don't say 'Barthelona'. It makes you sound like a tourist. Nobody in Catalonia speaks with the ceceo. If you really want to sound like a local, it's 'Barna' .

[–]chasmo-OH-NO 0 points1 point ago

Well thanks for the input. Being that was the only place in Spain I visited, I did hear the th-c. Forgive the ignorance and thanks for the correction.

[–]framegrace 0 points1 point ago

I'll explain a little this common misconception.

Barcelona in spanish is spelled with c, so is pronounced with c. In Spanish you say what you write. So Barthelona is the most similar way to write in English the Spanish pronunciation.

In Catalan, the local language, you use "s" instead, because that's how the leter "c" is pronounced in Catalan. So in Catalan you pronounce it like "Barsalona".

Which one to use in english? I presume better go to the original and use "Barsalona".

But every english speaker I know pronounce it "Barselona". Which is a mix of both...

[–]MarvinTheAndroid42 0 points1 point ago

Some say it's boring, I say... HOLY SHIT I CAN ACTUALLY FIND MY WAY AROUND??? Oh glorious day.

[–]bloodorflies 0 points1 point ago

La Sagrada Familia alone is worth the trip from anywhere.

[–]hammertime123 0 points1 point ago

Barcelona is awesome. Great food, great people, and... great topless beaches.

[–]merdock379 0 points1 point ago

How do you do communion for 9,000 people?

[–]404AikNotFound 0 points1 point ago

Is this real life?

[–]bleeding_me1 0 points1 point ago

another picture ruined by hdr.

[–]Cocomaan 0 points1 point ago

Hmmmm... inception?

[–]smytro 0 points1 point ago

Gotta love how the church is the tallest and most prominent feature in the city...

[–]MammothMan34 -2 points-1 points ago

As an American I disapprove of this city having sensible street alignment.

[–]justasking687 9 points10 points ago

As a Bostonian I disapprove of this city having any street alignment.

[–]stareattheart 0 points1 point ago

There is barrio gothico, where everything is random and convoluted. It's the old part of the city.

[–]skol84 0 points1 point ago

back bay must really piss you off. I'm probably just slow on the uptake, but I just realized the streets are so well-aligned that the cross streets are alphabetical: Arlington, Berkeley, Clarendon, Dartmouth, Exeter, Fairfield, Gloucester, Hereford...

[–]mysticRight 2 points3 points ago

Why? I don't get it.

[–]Cocomaan -4 points-3 points ago

American cities are rarely built on a grid. Now that I think about it, very few European cities are either.

[–]b_loodbeard 13 points14 points ago

I'd actually say just the opposite. The grid system in urban design IS characteristically American.

[–]oshen 2 points3 points ago

EXACTLY! It's only a few older areas that are not by grid... otherwise the grid system DEFINES the US. Urban design/architecture studies ftw.

[–]dimechimes 2 points3 points ago

Hopefully in your studies you learned that grids at this scale were invented/implemented by Napoleon in Paris as it made it much easier for his forces to mobilize and put down dissenting factions.

[–]oshen 1 point2 points ago

The only courses I've taken specialize on modern urban design, so thank you for the historical information! :)

[–]dimechimes 4 points5 points ago

He also gave us the whole even address numbers on the south and west sides of streets and the odd numbers on north and east. Little known fact is that he would...hey wait, where are you going?

[–]oshen 1 point2 points ago

I'm here!!!

[–]stareattheart 1 point2 points ago

Many old european cities were built to maximise wind (less smell) and have sensible street flow (if you throw out water, it will end up in the rivers).

It's completely unpractical now, but it was practical then.

[–]PurpleZoombini 0 points1 point ago

New York has a very sensible street alignment and really helped me as a tourist. I was in Barcelona last week as well and the old city bit where most of the action is isn't that sensible. The area of the Sagrada Familia as seen here is a little further out.

[–]Keksus_ -1 points0 points ago

aka Sim City

[–]Inv_Man -1 points0 points ago

Not the Barcelona I was expecting, but pretty nonetheless. I just prefer the planet I suppose.

[–]Fly_Caster -1 points0 points ago

Looks like a bunch of "New Jack City"s

[–]sivablue -1 points0 points ago

[–]Seanukkah -2 points-1 points ago

Inception?

[–]Kylearn -5 points-4 points ago

I really loved Barcelona, excpet this ugly construction site (center left of the picture) which people pay an insane amount to visit...

[–]0_- 5 points6 points ago

[–]oshen 1 point2 points ago

that's fucking gorgeous. FUCKING gorgeous.

[–]pnilz 2 points3 points ago

Well they've been building that church for 130 years.

[–]diulei 0 points1 point ago

Sagrada Familia? That things is absolutely stunning and pictures don't do it justice. Especially the interior.

To each his own though.

[–]addavenger41 0 points1 point ago

Free for students and like 15 euros otherwise? Not exactly a fortune and well well worth in IMO.

[–]blwork -2 points-1 points ago

Where the heck do you park?

[–]Howard_Beale 0 points1 point ago

along the streets and a lot of those clipped block corners have parking. A lot of them have cafe's and stores.

[–]SenatorIvy -2 points-1 points ago

If you look closely you can see where Manuel lived, with his mother and five-a brraah-thers.

[–]TheAwesomestKyle -5 points-4 points ago

ive been there and it looks a little shopped

[–]Neker 2 points3 points ago
