The last time we defended that poorly, we lost our country for 5 years

[–]Kampfketchup 237 points238 points ago

Dude... Being german I laughed way too hard at this

[–]ooo0ooo 386 points387 points ago

TIL: Germans laugh.

[–]Hanging_out 178 points179 points ago

Not laugh in the traditional sense. They continue scowling, but they nod their heads and say, "yes, that was humorous."

[–]MonitorMan 147 points148 points ago

Ja, scores 7.2 on the Schäfer-Krause laughability scale.

As a german, I hope that voice actor did not get paid for this performance.

[–]keko143 1 point2 points ago

I loved reading ooo0ooo before that. I imagined a small child saying that.

[–]Wargall 1 point2 points ago

It just sounds really angry when they do it.

struggle ketchup?

[–]Kampfketchup 5 points6 points ago

Almost. Kampf can either mean struggle or battle. I had battle in mind when I created the nick. Just imagine a bottle of Ketchup dressed up as Rambo dual-wielding two MG-42s.

[–]itsmuddy 0 points1 point ago

Ah. That explains the armor I wore in FFXI better.

[–]OlgerO 1 point2 points ago

Your team better win against denmark!!

[–]whiskey06 0 points1 point ago

Being Canadian I'm waiting for their royalty to show up.

[–]jahasv 0 points1 point ago

Awkward!

[–]Asytra 12 points13 points ago

Thing about Arsenal is, they always try an' walk it in.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points ago

Don't worry, Canada will be there to liberate you again. Singlehandedly, again.

[–]SeeYouInTea 10 points11 points ago

Hope he enjoys his comment karma that sits on a throne of lies.

[–]Denathe 0 points1 point ago

Nah, It started out on one of the most popular Dutch weblogs; Geenstijl.nl

Although, that's where I first saw it, just an hour after the match.

[–]EricWB 1 point2 points ago

I don't think the Canadians can help you with this one.

[–]d13coates 0 points1 point ago

Haters gonna hate

[–]MyDocSaysImFixedNow 0 points1 point ago

When I buy a new keyboard to replace the one I just snarfed coffee all over, I am going to tell the sales clerk it is Luqq's fault.

[–]froondele 0 points1 point ago

I feel left out because i dont understand this joke can anyone explain?!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I don't know if you're still looking for the answer, but the joke is that the last time the dutch defended that poorly against the germans was in World War II and they were occupied for five years after losing.

[–]casonthemason 21 points22 points ago

I remember the first goal where the Dutch defender nearest Gomez stopped running and started waving his arm in the air and looking for the ref (hoping for an offside call). Lesson being, don't stop back-checking in the middle of a play to whine for a call that isn't coming...that's how you lose.

[–]slashblot 4 points5 points ago

Always play until the call is made, true of every sport.

I bet you he got reamed by the coach afterwards.

[–]one_random_redditor 5 points6 points ago

To be more concise. Play to the whistle.

[–][deleted] 77 points78 points ago

I was watching with my German husband in berlin last night. He was going nuts. It was adorable.

[–]wearingacrown 119 points120 points ago

I was watching with my German boyfriend in the Netherlands last night. Next to my Dutch parents. It was nerve breaking.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points ago

It was, indeed! The guy that got his head cracked open was pretty badass, though. Played most of the game with blood flowing from his head.

[–]77108 24 points25 points ago

What startled me about that was that the guy who did this to him with his face just walked off without a scratch...

[–]Softcorps_dn 3 points4 points ago

The damage one person's forehead can do to areas of another person's face is pretty crazy. Even small cuts on the eyebrow/scalp bleed profusely.

[–]bacon_and_mango 8 points9 points ago

Indeed. Just ask Terry Butcher.

[–]truedipshit 0 points1 point ago

Or (whilst not on the same level) Lescott the other week.

[–]Deaqen 2 points3 points ago

For me it looked like he cut him with his nose

[–]HerrSpitt -2 points-1 points ago

Robben is an arrogant, egoistic-playing sucker.

[–]tohas 1 point2 points ago

Here's a german joke for you:

I have good and bad news for you.

Bad News: You will be shot!

Good News: Robben's shooting...

[–]bouncythesane 2 points3 points ago

The way he went off the pitch after being substituted was embarrassing and rude. Just like Robin Van Persie (if my memory's correct) in the World Cup in 2010. The Dutch are known for their infighting, but it's sad to see such immaturity.

[–]dontyouthinkso 41 points42 points ago

That was to save time, I think

[–]paysbas 6 points7 points ago

You're right. He got off on the other side to safe a few seconds. This way his substitute could get on the field faster. I think yesterday he was one of the better Dutch players, he spend a lot of time defending the Dutch goal because the actual defenders had their heads up their arse.

[–]Kahuun 5 points6 points ago

Yep, I think it was ok for him to do this after özil took about 10 minutes to walk of the field.

[–]maexn 13 points14 points ago

I thought he just went out on the other side to save time. So the game could continue faster.

[–]dr_root 4 points5 points ago

I was watching it with german friends in Neukölln, lots of fireworks when the game ended :)

[–]Eeku 4 points5 points ago

I can confirm the fireworks. Sonnenallee represent.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

I work in Neukölln! I am actually there right now.

[–]Anesthesiakk 5 points6 points ago

I'm sorry.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Its all good. I live in the north so that's all that matters.

[–]Anesthesiakk 0 points1 point ago

Truth. I'm moving out of old people land Dahlem in a month or two and heading to a nicer, more central part of the city. Soooo happy.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

We moved to a deadend street with a large plot of land behind it that's owned by the company that built our apartment complex. All you hear are birds and kids playing. So chill. Our old apartment was tiny and right off a busy street. Yuck.

[–]dr_root 0 points1 point ago

That's cool, you work in a bar?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

No. I work at a photo studio. I scan lots of photos, slides, negatives. Lots of hairy nude women from years past. :-/

[–]the-knife 4 points5 points ago

There are still Germans in Neukölln?

[–]Anesthesiakk 2 points3 points ago

There are lots of knives in Neukölln..

[–]RageDoll 12 points13 points ago

I'm still waiting for the banana fight that will inevitably happen when he next plays...

It was him who said he'd kill a man for throwing a banana at him right?

Dem flares mate, it's all because of him.

[–]Hoobleton 7 points8 points ago

Why always me?

[–]alreadytakenusername 30 points31 points ago

Whoa.. he plays two different professional sports?

[–]ProfChaos 6 points7 points ago

Funny name, but if you seriously like Vuvuzelas please re-evaluate your life.

[–]phd1969 85 points86 points ago

The Dutch team is in shambles, pretty much the equivalent of the French team in South Africa 2010.

[–]nodefect 60 points61 points ago

I know they're not very well, but... that bad?

[–]wearingacrown 46 points47 points ago

Let me remind you, the Dutch team was playing the final WC... 2 years a go

[–]nodefect 37 points38 points ago

Whatever their level was 2 years ago, the Dutch players aren't defecting from training sessions.

[–]herruhlen 37 points38 points ago

They're more of an Italy 2010.

[–]maxpge 8 points9 points ago

Yet Germany finished 3rd, so not that much of a difference.

[–]kometes 1 point2 points ago

I think saying they were "playing" is stretching it. It was a thug version of the game...

[–]05bella1 2 points3 points ago

they had a hard group to be fair. They could still qualify aswell

[–]lopsiness 2 points3 points ago

True enough, but with Denmark likely to lose to Germany I bet Portugal will smell blood and really take it to them. If Ronaldo can sort himself out Dutch could very well 0 and out.

[–]rockpoodle 0 points1 point ago

The danes looked pretty good against portugal. I wouldn't count them out.

[–]bcisme 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I mean, they really haven't been that bad. They over achieved in the World Cup too, at least to me. Their defense has never been great, none of their back four, again, to me, are great. They are okay players, but Wilems is raw, Van der Wiel is good but not a great defender and the two centerbacks are above average. A meh defense on a team that is stacked with attackers, but wants to play two holding midfielders that dodn't do much defending (for a game, at least).

[–]jahasv 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but two years ago Sneijder was considered a top contender for the Ballon d'Or, having been a key piece to Inter securing the Treble. Arjen Robben was also playing better, though as always he buckled under pressure, like when he went 1-on-1 with Iker and could have taken home the gold right then. Rafael van der Vaart was also having a much better season. Finally, van der Saar was guarding the back... In 2012, they have... van Persie, the only player who had a great season out of the entire squad.

TLDR: The Dutch had two playmakers and a winger in top shape and a key goalkeeper two years ago.

[–]bcisme 0 points1 point ago

Robben, Van der Vaart, De Jong, Van Bommel, and Heitenga all had great seasons. Bayern got to the CL final, Tottenham were 4th in the EPL with VdV being the best player on the team, De Jong won the EPL, Van Bommel was a regular on the 2nd best team in Serie A...the change in style is the main difference for me. 2 holding midfielders and Afellay not having played for much of the season are big differences. Everyone aside from left back and Afellay had good seasons.

[–]jahasv 0 points1 point ago

Bayern did reach the CL final, but saying that Robben had a great season is an overstatement; he had a good season but the end was disastrous. After missing the penalty against Chelsea, he has not had anything good coming to him. Saying that everyone aside from left back had a good season is also an overstatement. Again, Sneijder, terrible season, Stekelengurg bad season (Roma had a very high GA margin, specially when you compare that to top teams), Kuyt bad season (even left Liverpool recently), Van Bommel, yes his team had a good season, but can you honestly say he made a big difference? He is also ageing, which doesn't help. He was sold to PSV after all... I'll give you De Jong though.

Don't get me wrong, I am a big Netherlands fan. I wanted them to win the World Cup, but seriously, their players are not in top shape as they were in 2010. I was honestly shocked when they lost to Denmark, but that was when I realized they are not poised to do that great in this particular tournament. Their midfield is not doing too well, their forwards and wingers (namely Robben and Afellay) are having a bad streak, how are they expected to win it?

BTW, what was Bert van Marwijk thinking by putting Afellay as a starter??

[–]bcisme 0 points1 point ago

Sneijder played good in the tournament and Kuyt barely played. Vorm or Krul probably should have been the GK, but not sure it would have made a difference. Agree with Afellay, that was puzzling since Van der Vaart and Huntelaar were on the bench.

[–]weatherx 0 points1 point ago

of course not. de jong would've won a karate world cup with that flying kick.

[–]phorkor 1 point2 points ago

They're a great team, they are just a bit ego driven right now which makes them plays sloppy.

[–]HerrSpitt 5 points6 points ago

It's definitively not that bad. Look how well they played against Denmark, they were just to stupid to score a fucking goal. French 2010 sucked in every single aspect.

[–]tiexano 1 point2 points ago

Quick, start a rebellion agains the coach and save your face.

[–]CapeAndCowl 0 points1 point ago

I dunno, even though the looked like children most of the match yesterday, I still think they're a good team. Robben just seems to have forgotten that's what they are... a team

[–]jokeyly 41 points42 points ago

That was good match, but in the last 30 min the defence was as good as Ben Affleck in Daredevil

[–]ebyebye 52 points53 points ago

wich was a stunning performance. the guy was blind, makes it way more difficult.

[–]crasher_pt 2 points3 points ago

Oh my god, that must have been awful to watch.

[–]Oejsen 7 points8 points ago

Love that pic! Go Germany!!!

[–]Polliwog39 48 points49 points ago

Great game... I always enjoy watching Germany.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points ago

As an American, I see this is what a World Series should be.

[–]bigtabs 75 points76 points ago

Having more than one country in it, you mean?

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points ago

Exactly. Yes, somebody will mention the Blue Jays, but whatevs.

[–]BASELESS_SPECULATION 8 points9 points ago

We've even won it twice, which is more than 11 other franchises can say!

[–]imgonnacallyouretard 1 point2 points ago

Also the Montreal Expos until 2004

[–]aaipod 0 points1 point ago

[–]Limes19 11 points12 points ago

This is only the European championship though...

[–]ger_guy 8 points9 points ago

dont tell me this is a repost

[–]ktewell 34 points35 points ago

I've got Germany for the Euro win this year!

[–]brandonw00 2 points3 points ago

Me too. I don't know why people think Spain will win.

[–]ktewell 6 points7 points ago

Spain plays a beautiful possession game, which I love. Without David Villa though, they are missing the goals in the final third. Not to mention even Del Bosque knows this, he brought 11 midfielders to the tournament.

[–]brandonw00 0 points1 point ago

I think that people have figured out how to beat them now, and they won't change their game.

[–]ktewell 0 points1 point ago

They don't necessarily need to change it. They play an amazing possession game and can pass around anybody. They've just found out how disaster-ridden they can be when big players like Villa and Puyol out.

[–]nothingpersnal -1 points0 points ago

Spain.

[–]ktewell 9 points10 points ago

I do love Spain, however Germany are more well rounded. And well, with Torres playing forward.. no goals will be scored.

[–]eats_shit_and_dies 1 point2 points ago

this is funny because he just did score

[–]ktewell 3 points4 points ago

Everybody I'm with was like.. that awkward moment when Torres actually does score.

[–]RazZaHlol 0 points1 point ago

we can tell our kids about this event

[–]nothingpersnal 0 points1 point ago

He's turned his game around as of late, ever since he scored against Barcelona in CL he's been playing quite well.

[–]gentlemandinosaur 6 points7 points ago

Man, I would LOVE for Ireland to beat Spain.

They won't. But, a guy can dream can't he?

[–]Jaboomaphoo 1 point2 points ago

[–]blob-dob-11 0 points1 point ago

All of Ireland is deluded into thinking we'll win. Not just the game, but the championship. It's kind of scary.

[–]gentlemandinosaur 0 points1 point ago

Nothing wrong with a little blind pride.

[–]theinterweb 2 points3 points ago

Torres isn't playing forward. In fact they played a 4-6-0 last game, no forwards at all.

[–]nothingpersnal 0 points1 point ago

yeah...2 goals by Torres.

[–]Crossbowshootr 3 points4 points ago

Not strutting Leo, but better.

[–]Blind_Pierre 2 points3 points ago

Repost? Yes.

Do I have a problem with that? Absolutely not.

Thank you for letting me see this again. Have an upvote.

[–]PacificOctopus 2 points3 points ago

I love this! Can i have the link of where you got originally the picture from, bitte?

[–]Grrbam 2 points3 points ago

As a Dutch.. i'm not even mad! Beside.. Denmark and Portugal were more excited to watch than this match.

[–]awe300 2 points3 points ago

Best soccer picture in ages

[–]joystickgenie 2 points3 points ago

Knowing nothing about what happened with socker (football), this is just a lovely picture of a guy in a white shirt crop dusting a bunch of guys in orange.

[–]flakfab 4 points5 points ago

Hummels is such a boss

[–]Kitten_love 1 point2 points ago

The expressions in this photo, i love all of them.

[–]MuelaBeast 1 point2 points ago

[–]Bishop1415 1 point2 points ago

yeah, our Left side had more holes then swiss cheese, especially in the 1st half, Willems kept getting beat, would not go goal side of the guy, Schwienstiegger had all the space in the world 5 yards above the penalty box, what is the point of having 2 defensive midfielders if they are not there defending?

[–]mymomisyourfather 1 point2 points ago

Willems is 18 years old and earlier this year he was still playing in the jupiler league. I think he held himself quite well

[–]Bishop1415 1 point2 points ago

he definitely played better in the second half, and sure he is young, but at the end of the day, I wonder if there was a more experienced left back we could have put in, and let Willems mature a bit more

[–]Jaboomaphoo 1 point2 points ago

They probably couldn't have defended against the Schweinstyler if they wanted to.

[–]Bishop1415 0 points1 point ago

maybe so, but all the same, that guy was in so much space for both goals to create those passes... And on the other end, the Germans were sure not to give sneijder the same amount of room

[–]wckb 1 point2 points ago

If you read up about it, it was actually quite clever what the germans did. They had mueller and oezil on the right, forcing de jong to come over to cover oezil (willems had mueller), this meant that van bommel now had the responsibility to cover both khedira and schweinsteiger. Khedira made a dummy run, pulling van bommel from schweinsteiger, leading him to be wide open for the passes. Look up a replay and youll see. Clever draw from oezil and khedira made those goals.

[–]Bishop1415 0 points1 point ago

huh, Did not catch that, I will have to look at that

[–]Jaboomaphoo 1 point2 points ago

That's so weird, I was making the same face during that game

[–]WimvwJr 1 point2 points ago

I really dont see how we scored against germany and didn't against denmark..

[–]LolCamAlpha 1 point2 points ago

Haters gonna hate.

[–]Daxster1995 3 points4 points ago

We played like shit imo, Germany deserved to win.

[–]iLuVtiffany 4 points5 points ago

I'm guessing the orange guys are the Dutch?

[–]jake314159 22 points23 points ago

That would be a correct guess.

at the end of that game, all i can think is Hummels can play a better forward than van Persie. i'm a fan of van Persie but he was shit.

[–]dtran123 0 points1 point ago

oh my god spoiler T___T I hasn't watch the match yet i hate browsing reddit now....
