I used to work with a guy that refused to drink water, he only drank Coca-Cola all the time, and two cups of espresso during lunch without any food. He had serious digestive problems. The doctors told him to drink water or else he was going to suffer a lot of more problems if he continued to drink sodas all the time.

He then bought bottled water, a bottle of strawberry sirup (full of sugar) and would fill the water bottle with it, he continued to have health problems, but he said that he couldn't drink water because it didn't taste like anything and it was boring.

This was pretty widely accepted knowledge up until pretty recently, historically speaking. Beer or wine were much preferable. Makes sense, seeing as how water was full of pollutants and all sorts of bad things up until a couple hundred years ago, and the alcohol in wine and beer killed those things.
