^ ^ ^ This is how I know your thesis is bullshit. You could have not written this last part and your argument wouldn't have been as easy to poke a hole through. Unfortunately, you specified using the word "professional", completely ignoring the fact that there are various professional leagues within the same association, with differing levels of proficiency. You're also ignoring the concept of relegation and promotion which are the minimum for joining the next league in the totem pole or being relegated down. That is, There is a huge difference in proficiency between the average player from the Premier league and the average player from the Football League Two. And your "past a certain point" caveat is irrelevant because these all fit into your own thesis of professional and because it's a bullshit vague caveat to begin with. Therefore there IS a shitload of room for improvement from the lowliest professional player to, say, Lionel Messi.

To be honest, upon further reading of your entire premise, I still contend that it's completely subjective. The "standard" you refer to can mean that a shit team with players who can barely trap a ball can be the best players if only they're considered the best players, since that is what the "standard" is. If that's case, it's impossible to compare the standards for a "very good" performance in one sport (soccer) to the standards of a "very good" performance in "other sports". Plus, you're subjectifying the standard in one sport and not the other (the sport you like).

Even more detrimental to your thesis, is the fact that you also used the sentence "the proficiency ceiling in soccer" (generalizing even further upon your subsequent premise of proficiency ceiling of professional players) . That's because by referring to soccer in general, you're allowing for an even wider point of comparison between different levels of proficiency, which includes literally 5yo's to top flight football and everything in between, such as a group a friends getting together and playing a small game, or a pay-to-play indoor soccer league like Big League Dreams, to the Football Conference which is below the Championship, all the way up the English Football system.

So even if you're only referring to the proficiency ceiling in top-flight Premier League football, that's still a damn-high ceiling in soccer in general. So, by either of your two propositions (proficiency ceiling in soccer in general and proficiency ceiling of professional players specifically) there is an objectively high ceiling of proficiency, and there is in fact a lot of room for improvement even for two players within the same league like Premier League or in soccer in general, from the lowliest (insert name) to the the greatest Wayne Rooney or Robin Van Persie.

TLDR there is an objectively high ceiling of proficiency in soccer.

I say this entirely void of any sarcasm: I am sorry to have wasted your time on this topic. I have very little research vested in this "theory" and for the most part was just talking out of my ass, as is customary on the internet. I don't follow any sports and have generally little interest in the matter, but I can still enjoy and even get excited about sporting events, including soccer matches. I just find it harder to maintain enthusiasm watching soccer, and that comment was a cynical explanation of how I perceive the game, biased and uninformed as it may be. And the reference to 5yo's was a bad joke implying that if I were to describe the events of that gif to someone who hadn't seen it, they'd sooner believe it happened at a child's soccer game than on what appears to be a televised match between teams of adult players. Again, I apologize for any and all rustled jimmies.

Also, surely if there were two very good teams, there's going to be less shots and goals, because they'd know not to make any mistakes and actually defend well- it doesn't matter how good you can shoot and dribble if you're against a well structured and in depth defence- just watch Barcelona Chelsea semi. Messi, arguably the most talented player who has ever lived, couldn't score past the Chelsea defence.

I used to play in amateur and youth football, and the scores there were much higher- 6-6 wasn't uncommon, and there was a game that ended 24-0. Playing footie at the park with friends or in a less skilled environment almost guarantees more goals.

You're making the bold statement that you truly believe 5 year old kids play soccer about as well as players who are paid 200,000 dollars per WEEK. In addition, you are addressing the conditions of the RULES of the game as opposed to the skill of the game when you mention the scores of a game. If American football required quarterbacks to throw with their feet and wide receivers to catch with their feet, the scores would most often be below 7 on each side. In addition, you are claiming that a talent pool of virtually every country except for the United States (for soccer) is smaller than a talent pool largely exclusive to either the Americas and Asia (baseball), Europe and North America (basketball), or just the United States (american football). And by far your weakest argument is the fact that there is a very low ceiling for soccer when clubs are willing to pay tens of millions of dollars for ONE player. In addition to paying that player millions of dollars per year. Also I'd like to add that soccer isn't even my favorite sport, your comment was just very clearly ignorant and close-minded, clearly never having spent the time to actually look into the sport.
