I feel like the odds of dying in a car wreck are lower than 1 in 125.

[–]Renmauzuo 251 points252 points ago

Quite probably maybe. The problem with these numbers is they don't provide any context. 1 time in every 125 I ride a car? 1 person who dies out of every 125 was in a car crash? If you're in a car crash, 1 in 125 crashes will kill you? So vague.

[–]rogersmith25 224 points225 points ago

"Quite probably maybe"

wtf?

[–]Ragnalypse 172 points173 points ago

Hmmm, yes. I do think our good chap wasn't as very good english as might supposedly.

[–]bawb88 62 points63 points ago

I think your assumption is very much plausibly possible.

[–]alexman17c 11 points12 points ago

I shall very much like to introduce you fine gentlemen to /r/proper.

[–]Siethron 12 points13 points ago

I'm not quite sure but it may be possible that you are missing the point perhaps?

[–]TheSleepingNinja 24 points25 points ago

But that isn't the point either, the real point is to wonder if anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

[–]TheoQ99 7 points8 points ago

I never even ever as far decided to wonder, but certainly even more want go do look like.

[–]Joe_the_Barbarian 5 points6 points ago

Ragnarok + Apocalypse = Ragnalypse.
I like you.

[–]Reduc 21 points22 points ago

Raging + Anal + Prolapse = Ragnalypse.

Maybe not.

[–]6xoe 3 points4 points ago

Let's go with it.

[–]Thick-McRunFast 4 points5 points ago

Raging Anal Prolapse - best band name ever.

[–]BA_Start 19 points20 points ago

They don't think it be like it is, but it do.

[–]alantrick 13 points14 points ago

What you see here is a lavish use of a technique known as hedging. It is used to denote the amount of conviction (or typically lack of conviction) with which which the speaker holds the accompanying statement and its impact to the conversation.

"Quite probably maybe" might be elaborated as "What you say sound like it is probably true; however, I am just intuiting this and have no evidence to back this claim up. Moreover, I don't care enough to get involved in an internet argument about it."

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

I do this all the time especially on the subject with beastiality, and sex with dogs.

[–]Nelo112 5 points6 points ago

That's a definite maybe.

[–]rampantdissonance 1 point2 points ago

Here are my numbers. So quite probably maybe? (I know this is crazy)

[–]Rolten 43 points44 points ago

It's certainly not '1 time in every 125 I ride a car'. This means we'd all be dead.

Its also not 'If you're in a car crash, 1 in 125 crashes will kill you', because I'm pretty sure the odds of dying when your plane crashes are larger than 1/4,600,000.

Thus, I think that it's most probably 1 out of every 125 people will die in a car crash. Of course, this number still seems a bit high...

[–]SuperTurtle 15 points16 points ago

I agree, but to make the statement a bit more accurate I'd say it's more like "1/125 deaths are attributed to car accidents"

Though even that, the language in the picture is inconsistent. At first, they bluntly say "car crash," which might include pedestrian deaths (does a car hitting a pedestrian count as a crash?). But later they infer that driving is the most dangerous, which means the 1/125 statistic wouldn't include accidents involving bikers or pedestrians being hit by cars.

[–]stagfury 6 points7 points ago

"1/125 deaths are attributed to car accidents" is utter meaningless when we are talking about the safety of different form of transportation though.

[–]cheechw 2 points3 points ago

That makes the most sense of all.

[–]Lidodido 5 points6 points ago

But on the other hand, most people travel by car a lot more often than by airplane. The only way of comparing how dangerous something is is to compare how big of a chance there is that you'll die if you do it once. If I take my car to work I feel a lot safer than when riding my bike, but I don't think more people in total die due to bicycle-accidents.

[–]Syclops 2 points3 points ago

Though you're right, there was a TIL post like a month ago that said 90 percent of commercial plane crashes have survivors, and 95 percent of people in a plane crash survive.

[–]AsDevilsRun 5 points6 points ago

Doesn't that have a lot to do with what's classified as a "crash"?

[–]cloral 5 points6 points ago

That seems likely. If your plane nosedives into the ocean from 10,000 feet, you're probably not going to survive. But if your plane's landing gear gets stuck and the plane has to skid to a stop on its belly? Pretty good chance of walking away from that one uninjured.

[–]Fyreswing 5 points6 points ago

1 time in every 125 I ride a car?

If this was the case I don't think any of us would be here right now. There's a good chance everyone in this thread has been in a car over 1000 times.

[–]GrimTuesday 6 points7 points ago

My guess is that they are saying that 1 in 125 deaths are caused by car crashes whereas only 1 in 4,600,000 are caused by plane crashes.

[–]dnew 2 points3 points ago

Usually it's per passenger mile.

[–]KaptnKrunch 1 point2 points ago

i feel like 1 out of every 125 people who have ever driven car is most likely

[–]Rmrichards1385 1 point2 points ago

The later makes more sense. bc if you look at fire, 1 in every 40,000 trips I take that way will kill you. So this must be the same for the car.

[–]ulpisen 1 point2 points ago

actually it says (the odds that)"you will die in a car crash". which presumably means that when you die, there's a 125 chance that the cause of death was car crash. which is logic fail because they imply that it's safer to fly but if more people flew obviously more people would die from airplane crashes.

note: I'm not claiming it's not more safe to fly, it probably is, I'm just saying the statistics are misleading, assuming I interpreted them correctly

[–]th1nker 1 point2 points ago

Maybe the study was done on the Twisted Metal games?

[–]pureprotest 0 points1 point ago

exactly why I hate the common "it is safer to fly"

[–]HotRodLincoln 0 points1 point ago

43,000 people in the US die in car accidents annually. The total number of preventable deaths is ~2,403,351 [1]

Ergo, were you to die accidentally, there's a 1.8 in 100 chance it'd be a car accident.

There's about 312,000,000 people in the US, so that number is quite a bit smaller relatively .000014% of Americans die each year in a car crash.

[–]CitizenPremier 1 point2 points ago

So the stastic is meaningless, since people fly far less often than they drive. It's like trying to ride a shark and arguing it's safe because few people ever get bitten.

[–]ReadShift 1 point2 points ago

Right! The important number would be bites per miles ridden, not just overall bites.

[–]dclowd9901 0 points1 point ago

Transportation odds are all fucking wacky.

For instance, they say that airline travel is the safest way to travel. However I've yet to see a figure that compares casualties per trip. I think that number would be decidedly skewed toward cars being safer.

It doesn't matter how far I'm traveling. I'm not often going to be trading a car ride for a plane ride or vice versa.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]jroot 0 points1 point ago

I've always thought the "airplanes are the safest way to travel" statistics a bit suspect. In a given day, (wild guess) millions of more miles are covered on the ground than in the air. No doubt it's probably STILL safer, I just wonder how they are stacking the numbers.

[–]Kangster_ 1 point2 points ago

No its pretty obvious. The cause of death in 1 in 125 people will be by car crash. Same rule applies for the others.

[–]sex_with_orcas 21 points22 points ago

No, that's probably correct.. in a lifetime of driving of course. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_causes_of_death_by_rate

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]IAmAStory 1 point2 points ago

This list is fascinating, raises interesting questions. Why do so many more women die from fire and men from drowning and poisoning?

[–]one_who_thinks 1 point2 points ago

Because women prefer not to see their victim when they kill. Therefore, poison is one of their preferred methods.

[–]Trashcanman33 0 points1 point ago

Yea 40,000 people a year in America die from car crashes, 300,000,00 million people live in America, maths not hard to do.

[–]this_is_an_alt 0 points1 point ago

TIL that nearly 1 out of every hundred people die a violent death

[–]wrajii 9 points10 points ago

It really needs to have deaths per mile of travel (or per million miles if you want nicer numbers). Cars are probably still more dangerous but it's a much more useful number.

Edit: I got this: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=annual+car+death+in+america+%2F+miles+driven+in+america and http://www.bts.gov/xml/air_traffic/src/index.xml#TwelveMonthsSystem but can't find a statistic for deaths on commercial airlines in the United States.

[–]Cosmologicon 10 points11 points ago

You really want fatalities per passenger-mile, not vehicle-mile. Assuming 2 passengers per car on average, that puts your linked number at 7 deaths per billion passenger-miles for cars. Wikipedia gives the corresponding number for commercial airlines as 0.3 deaths per billion passenger-miles.

[–]wrajii 2 points3 points ago

Awesome, thanks!

[–]Biuku 2 points3 points ago

If that's true, that's terrible. What if elevator's were that bad? People would say, "that is not right" and then march and stuff.

[–]akula06 1 point2 points ago

elevators always get the bad rap. it's the escalators that are dangerous...

[–]alixxlove 1 point2 points ago

Because it's a misleading statistic. If I ride in my car 125 times a year, will a die once every year? If 125 people die this year, will one be in a car wreck? They imply very different things.

[–]Cosmologicon 9 points10 points ago

Obviously it's the second one. Why on Earth would people even think for a moment that it's the first?

[–]fightingsleep 1 point2 points ago

I feel like if more people voluntarily got into fires the odds of people dying in them would increase significantly.

[–]dmcginley 5 points6 points ago

I hate statistics like this. 1 in 125 chance you'll die in a car crash. You really derive much from that statement...

I'll consult the internet oracles!

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=annual+deaths+in+america says that 2.5 Million people die annually in the USA

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=annual+car+death+in+america says that 43443 people die in a car crash annually in the USA

2,500,000 / 43,443 = 57.54

Could round that to 1 in 58 chance. If you were to die, it would be a 1.73% [corrected, thanks] chance (or 1 in 58) that it would be a car crash that did you in.

This is a shocking revelation... this book it totally outdated... cars are killing more people than we originally realized!

Some really interesting statistics would be...

  • What are your chances of dying per car ride?
  • Does age range have anything do with the ratio?
  • What about alcohol/narcotics?

I just hate the whole 1 in 125 people die this way. It reveals no ways to protect yourself from a situation as such. Just a blanket statement declaring that things happen. Lame.

[Edit - I got my percents wrong... tired and sick... sorry]

[–]sphericalvoxel 9 points10 points ago

You're doing the division the wrong way, and you're handling percentages incorrectly.

You want a ratio of people who've died in cars to total deaths: 43,443 / 2,500,000 = 0.0173772, meaning that, if you're gonna die this year, there's a ~1.7% chance it'll be in a car.

Edit: Oh, but you're computing 1 / (deaths / car-deaths), which is mathematically equivalent, but a really weird way of going about it.

[–]E11i0t 1 point2 points ago

According to "united stats of America" it's higher. 1 in 88.

[–]rawrgs 0 points1 point ago

I'm right there with ya. I'm thinking lifetime death odds.

Holy crap, I'm never driving again:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_the_chances_of_dying_in_a_car_accident

[–]putsadickonyourface 0 points1 point ago

This is why I ride a motorcycle.

[–]bottom_of_the_well 0 points1 point ago

Especially if comparing dying in a car wreck where you are not at fault.

[–]NivMidget 0 points1 point ago

i feel like the odds of standing in a fire and dying are way lower also

[–]Frywad32 0 points1 point ago

I also imagine that the chance if dying in a plane crash is pretty high as well. The chances of a plane crash is lower then that of a car, but if you going down in a plane, it's not going to be pretty.

[–]hello_toast 73 points74 points ago

I'd like to know what the odds are of dying when it come to travelling by trebuchet...

[–]rogersmith25 87 points88 points ago

0 people this year died taking commercial trebuchet flights. Sounds safe to me.

[–]Apostolate 8 points9 points ago

Sounds safe, but I just don't know. What is the in flight menu like?

[–]FrenchieSmalls 44 points45 points ago

Birds. Fucking birds everywhere.

[–]NeoRush 9 points10 points ago

Animal porn, eh?

[–]toolatealreadyfapped 1 point2 points ago

Cite your source!

[–]Varsted 64 points65 points ago

That's only because they haven't perfected the floo network yet.

[–]Horcruxofbabylon 17 points18 points ago

It's not their fault that people still haven't learned to enunciate, especially when traveling under the influence of firewhiskey.

[–]Varsted 10 points11 points ago

I still think there should be some sort of warning label on that stuff, if it was me i would sue the manufacturers for all their galleons.

[–]hiimtom477 10 points11 points ago

Man, I had a floo powder joke all lined up. I knew someone would beat me too it.

[–]Hyperdrunk 6 points7 points ago

They always beat me to it.

Always.

[–]gkow 2 points3 points ago

I had a handful of joke powder ready to throw into this thread fire.

That's the best I can do.

[–]Flutterdash14 86 points87 points ago

[–]Apostolate 36 points37 points ago

One in 40,000 wizards are splinched every year, learn what you can do to make travelling safer.

DIAGONILLY

[–]Niqulaz 10 points11 points ago

Came here for this.
Your move, muggles.

[–]Joe_the_Barbarian 7 points8 points ago

I scrolled furiously, searching for this post. I knew that it had to be here, somewhere. I grew more desperate, as more muggles missed the obvious joke, until I found this. Your post. The post that saved me. As I upboated, my face contorted into the likeness of notbad.jpg. I applaud you, ma'am or brony, on posting this for those who could not, or did not.

tl;dr: i caem hear too say thiss lol

[–]modomario 7 points8 points ago

goddamit I was too slow x/

Ah well, good reference. The upvote goes to you.

[–]Erzsabet 1 point2 points ago

This is the scary side they never showed in the books.

[–]DarthTodd 0 points1 point ago

DIAGONAL ALLEY!!!

[–]Hellhunter120 0 points1 point ago

Try travelling by wildfire they said. It'd be fine they said.

[–]alittlelamb 17 points18 points ago

Ahh, I remember that book. Prentice Hall's 'Drive Right,' right?

[–]ViolentMasturbator[S] 8 points9 points ago

Indeed it is! Found this book from my old high school. Thought that segment was Reddit worthy.

[–]stefanocfb 7 points8 points ago

I remembered it right away.

Fuck drivers ed

[–]EdwinMerit 2 points3 points ago

My class actually got the brand new simulators when I was a sophomore, so I didn't mind that class back in High School.

[–]stefanocfb 1 point2 points ago

I did book work. For 30 fucking hours.

[–]Scoldering 8 points9 points ago

You're trying to tell me that a little under 1% of all people are gonna die in a car crash?

[–]Apostolate 3 points4 points ago

These days it's about 30,000 people every year. Let's assume the average persons life is 100, and they drive the same amount their entire lives (big assumptions). That means over a 100 year period, 3,000,000 (million) people die, which is roughly 1% of the US population (~310 million).

[–]OsamaBeenModdin 1 point2 points ago

Average lifespan of 100? You're joking, right?

[–]Apostolate 1 point2 points ago

I said they were big assumptions. If you reduce the life span, you can also reduce the amount of time people spend driving, (because we drive the average amount only some of our lives), so it may even out.

In the 70s nearly 50,000 people on average, and the population was only ~200 million. Think about that.

[–]InsertEnigmaHere 13 points14 points ago

Then I shall never travel in a yellow Dodge Stratus.

[–]ViolentMasturbator[S] 9 points10 points ago

Good idea, you really dodged a bullet there.

[–]CandleJakk 5 points6 points ago

Who travels by fire?

[–]pope_fundy 8 points9 points ago

Harry Potter

[–]Milkgunner 2 points3 points ago

Wizards and Witches

[–]Squalor- 5 points6 points ago

What are the odds of dying in a car whose engine caught fire in a plane?

[–]Joe_the_Barbarian 1 point2 points ago

Zero.

[–]puskunk 2 points3 points ago

Those of us who ride motorcycles disagree.

[–]PShireman 1 point2 points ago

HAH i have the exact same drivers ed textbook! Now im mad at myself for not using that for karma...

[–]eviloperator 1 point2 points ago

The problem is I drive every day and since I'm poor I fly only twice a year.

[–]citizennumber3 1 point2 points ago

The first time I flew on an airplane, the stranger sitting across from me tried to comfort me by mentioning this fact. "You're way more likely to die in a car crash." All I could think was, "Wow, cool. I wasn't really afraid of the plane crashing but NOW I'm afraid to simply, you know, do anything requiring mobility." She never warned me about traveling by fire, though...

Bitch.

[–]shutupjoey 1 point2 points ago

I drive on the 401 for a living. Fuck my life.

[–]omnithrope 1 point2 points ago

This is patently false. I get to work by fire every day and I've yet to have a problem.

[–]that_guitar_guy 1 point2 points ago

I've only ever been in a car 124 times in my life. Guess I'm never getting in one again.

[–]AntiTheory 1 point2 points ago

As a furry, I try to avoid using fire as a method of transportation.

[–]ebolabandit 1 point2 points ago

dem floo powder accidents. stupid wizards.

[–]iamthewillrus 1 point2 points ago

Cars have the statistical advantage, or rather disadvantage, of being used all the time. Almost no one uses planes everyday

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Now "Chariots of Fire" finally makes sense.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

[–]crazyshitwouldhappen 1 point2 points ago

Did you find this in a drivers ed book?! Saw this yesterday, in the book.

[–]Anglach3l 1 point2 points ago

Well done with the title...

[–]Notrub42 1 point2 points ago

Yes my driver's ed book had ridiculous statements like this.

"If the oil level is below the line that says add 1 quart, then add a quart of oil." (Just for an example.)

[–]Anyun 1 point2 points ago

Maybe they meant floo powder...

[–]freddit25 1 point2 points ago

"DIAGON ALLEY"
"What did he say?"
"I think he said diagonally?"

[–]Katykakle 1 point2 points ago

floo powder it is.

[–]suddenly_ponies 1 point2 points ago

These statistics are such crap. IF your car crashes, your survival rate is probably greater than 20%. If a plane does, your survival rate is lower than 2%.

This is marketing at work folks, ignore it

[–]Ascott1989 2 points3 points ago

Got any citations for that 2% figure?

[–]Marrk 1 point2 points ago

[–]TheLonelyCloud 0 points1 point ago

Oh shit, I had that exact same drivers Ed book. Boring as hell. Ah,that brings me back.

[–]veterejf 0 points1 point ago

I hate how statistics like this don't have a context. Maybe I just am missing something? 1 in 125 what die in a car crash? In a year, of people that die? Idk, I don't get it.

[–]co2gamer 0 points1 point ago

Motor bikes?

[–]amurphy7 0 points1 point ago

I remember this exact book from driver's ed in high school. Glad someone else noticed this.

[–]tylerxedge 0 points1 point ago

HOLY SHIT!

I remember seeing that in my drivers-ed class book. Now I have PROOF AND MY MOM CAN STOP MAKING FUN OF ME!

[–]why_ask_why 0 points1 point ago

TSA agent should inspect our car, and search us, every time we try to get into a car.

[–]kdawggg 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure the odds of dying in a car crash are way lower than that. It's still pretty high, but it's no way near that number.

[–]freddy3kid 0 points1 point ago

Well the odds are higher because you use a car more often. Nobody flies 10 miles to work, alas we do not hear of plane crashes on a daily basis

[–]darthn3ss 0 points1 point ago

This was my drivers ed book.

[–]Ultimate_Timmeh 0 points1 point ago

Statistics, proof that you're more likely to die in a plane crash than win the lottery.

[–]DrMoses 0 points1 point ago

I prefer to walk on the line, travel by FIRE!

[–]thegirlinyourcake 0 points1 point ago

SO the DMV recognizes the Floo Network now?

[–]Esc4p3 0 points1 point ago

Wait, is fire a mode of transportation?

[–]farmthis 0 points1 point ago

Walking is more dangerous than driving, I believe.

"Tripping and falling" also results in more deaths than guns, both homicides and accidents.

"Bees" are an order of magnitude deadlier than terrorists.

...

People suck at evaluating risks rationally and managing their fears.

[–]I_Have_Just_ 0 points1 point ago

What about the odds of dying from being a ViolentMasturbator ?

[–]SoggyCheez 0 points1 point ago

I can think of more dangerous methods of transportation.

[–]deathbytray 0 points1 point ago

Actually, if you compare the rate of accidental death per miles travelled, you'll find that fire is by far the most dangerous way to travel.

[–]packerfan55 0 points1 point ago

I don't think these numbers account for the fact that you drive far more than you fly. I remember a statistic similar to this in Freakonomics, and when you adjusted plane rides with car rides they were quite a bit closer, but still cars were more dangerous.

[–]8BITBRUISER 0 points1 point ago

Me: "Hey! I came to get my license!"

Mr. License Man: "Right away sir, in what vehicular device did you want to get your license in?"

Me: "Fire please!"

MLM: "Um.. whut. Son, who told you fire was a vehicular device?"

Me: "The internet..."

[–]swampfish 0 points1 point ago

...ignoring of course all the other more dangerous ways to travel like motorcycle, bicycles, jet-skis, snow-skis, etc...

[–]unimpresseddriver 0 points1 point ago

So if I travel in a fire I am less likely to die than if I travel by car?

[–]stickmansgirl 0 points1 point ago

This is a driver's ed book... am I right? The font and color look the same as my old highschool's driver's ed book. This is driving me nuts, I MUST KNOW.

[–]DarkLordMelkor 1 point2 points ago

yes

[–]mrgnome1538 0 points1 point ago

where are you from? i have the same drivers ED book

[–]cheese-and-candy 0 points1 point ago

Fire will always be the number one way to travel for me.

[–]Eminian 0 points1 point ago

I saw this as : you will crash in an airplane that catches on fire then you get hit by a car. If you ask me that is a life well spent.

[–]cobhc333 0 points1 point ago

Hey look a car crash!

[–]DarkLordMelkor 0 points1 point ago

I just saw this in my Drivers Ed book yesterday

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Yep another example of BS.

My advise so to stop reading that publication.

[–]SkyBS 0 points1 point ago

Yup, this was my textbook.

[–]sexybeast2015 0 points1 point ago

I'm using this exact book, right now. Mommy?

[–]Beulshite 0 points1 point ago

I don't know about you... But here in the wizarding world, we travel by fireplace sometimes.

[–]seanjh63 0 points1 point ago

You know what really bothers me? How often do people fly? Or be around huge flames -___-? In statistics, I'm pretty sure this data wouldn't fly.

[–]Pepper_MD 0 points1 point ago

As a man with a degree in Statistics, that's fucking stupid.

[–]tweenrave 0 points1 point ago

Maybe 1 in every 125 car accidents someone dies?

Holy crap I got this book at my drivers Ed class yesterday! What state do you live in, you think we are in the same class?

[–]TapedRapedGaped 0 points1 point ago

That's, still fucking there. Education.

[–]RomanCandle332 0 points1 point ago

Clearly the obvious solution is to take airplanes everywhere. To school? Yes. To work? Yes. To the mall? Yes. To a Whore House? Yes--but get a bigger airplane so you can take women back with you.

[–]zayilatan 0 points1 point ago

Floo powder. duh

[–]kabukistar 0 points1 point ago

Bad data anyways, because it's comparing something most people do daily (ride in a car) to something they do much less frequently (fly on a plane).

I could say that you're more likely to die in a car crash than getting shot in the chest with a cannon. It doesn't make getting shot in the chest with a cannon safer than driving.

[–]woomahodal 0 points1 point ago

You have terrible handwriting, my good sir.

[–]McGravin 0 points1 point ago

Odds that a plane will catch on fire and crash directly onto a car: 1 in 23 trillion.

[–]kenmaclean 0 points1 point ago

Wrong. The most dangerous way to travel is drunkenly riding a wild bear while wearing nothing but a suit made of nitroglycerin in plastic baggies. while holding flaming scissors. Also the bear is made of chainsaws.

[–]GoldenToenail 0 points1 point ago

Diagon alley!!!!!!

[–]dangerous_beans 0 points1 point ago

Well, if I'm traveling by floo...

[–]ApeX_Walrus 0 points1 point ago

I remember seeing this in my driver's ed book last year

[–]krameratneu 0 points1 point ago

As a stats guy - the odds of dying in a plane crash are a lot closer to the odds of dying in a car crash when you look at it in a hours-of-travel-in-each type of vehicle basis

[–]Lhabs 0 points1 point ago

The problem is that the average person travels in a car so much more than they do in an airplane

[–]Killzark 0 points1 point ago

I've been in over 125 car rides. Checkmate statistics!

[–]ZeeHypnotist 0 points1 point ago

Odds of dying in a car wreck are about 1 in 6500.

As in, 1 in 6500 people will die yearly on average.

[–]planification 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, commercial air is safe. But hobby pilots crash all the time. Experience makes a big difference.

[–]pazilya 0 points1 point ago

You must work at the Florida Department Of Transportation.

[–]buttonforest 0 points1 point ago

Floo Network users can confirm this and the dangers of mumbling your desired destination.

For anyone looking for stats here they are:

http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2012/tables/12s1103.pdf

No matter the numbers it seems we all need to take driving a bit more seriously.

[–]Ashanmaril 0 points1 point ago

Wow. I'm absolutely destroying those odds.

I've been in a car WAY more than 125 times, and I haven't even died ONCE!

But in all seriousness, as someone that just finished up driver training, they make up most of those stats as scare tactics so you'll be a more cautious/defensive driver. :P

[–]simpledistraction 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the reminder. I totaled my car today. I'm not dead yet though!

[–]Jwojcek 0 points1 point ago

This is in my textbook!!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

This picture made me laugh out loud. My sides are a bit sore from the laughter. Thanks for the post.

[–]daedric_emperor 0 points1 point ago

I used that same textbook. It sucks ass.

[–]mickycam 0 points1 point ago

I was being lectured on this very picture in Driver's Ed yesterday. God help the highways.

[–]Wadegoerzen 0 points1 point ago

FLOO POWDER!!

[–]XypherFTW 0 points1 point ago

Gotta love Florida's driver's Ed textbooks

[–]ColdCaulkCraig 0 points1 point ago

1 : 4,600,000 and my grandparents absolutely REFUSE to fly. They would rather travel 11 hours in a car because then "the terrorists can't get them". It's pretty bad. My mom once payed $500 on plane tickets for them and they ended up canceling the trip because they didnt want to fly. My mom ended up losing a couple hundred dollars in cancellation fees.

[–]gabachocerote 0 points1 point ago

Did this post prompt anyone else to look up lists of chances of dying from various causes? Now I feel sayd...

[–]pointlesslyredundant 0 points1 point ago

Flu powder? Harry Potter? Someone not discussing stats? Anyone?

[–]bejahu 0 points1 point ago

So you will die in a car wreck once in every 125 times you drive somewhere or is it you will die once in every 125 car wrecks you're in?

[–]iam7yearsold 0 points1 point ago

This kills the human

[–]rhubarbbus 0 points1 point ago

Who travels by fire?

[–]Lestalia 0 points1 point ago

So, next time I nerd rage and tell someone to die in a car fire...that's fairly likely?

[–]Tsinoyboi 0 points1 point ago

Flame on!

[–]blowmyreddit 0 points1 point ago

Usually I don't travel in fires. Not sure about anybody else, but, not me.

[–]aviatorzack 0 points1 point ago

Diagon Alley?

[–]Deadforfun1 0 points1 point ago

So this is implying that fire is a transportation method?

[–]ehoehler 0 points1 point ago

So long as you have flu powder. Fire is also the fastest mode of transportation.
