I'm an American (Upstate New York) going to University in Canada. You wouldn't believe how much I identified with the North/South Exchange:

"Damn southerners"

"I'm not a southerner!"

"You're from south of the wall, that makes you a southerner!"

My friends enjoy referring to the border as "the wall" now.

[–]gjallerhornHouse Greyjoy 104 points105 points ago

imposter! American's don't say "going to university". You've clearly been assimilated.

[–]Perfect8veHouse Tully 6 points7 points ago

College

[–]KingToasty 1 point2 points ago

So there isn't a difference between college and university for you Southerners?

[–]gjallerhornHouse Greyjoy 1 point2 points ago

I think technically, a University is like a specific designation for a type of Higher learning institution. Something to do with its size or prestige; a university may have smaller colleges of specific subjects within it.

But "going to college" covers attending any of those institutions.

[–]KingToasty 0 points1 point ago

Huh. Universities and Colleges are a major distinction up n Canadaland. Weird.

[–]be_more_canadian 5 points6 points ago

Haha, I've never heard anybody call the border 'the wall', but I like it. That said, we (Southern Ontario) had a really mild winter. The wall should probably be located further north

HAHA, Americans. You know nothing Americans.

[–]Blacksheep01Winter Is Coming 3 points4 points ago

lol, I haven't had an exchange with a Canadian about this but I imagined that's how they feel. I live in New England so I'm no stranger to winter, -10F (Edit: -23C for the metric bastards ;)) degree temps, random blizzards and the like. However, our winter is not as strong as a Canadian winter. Guess north is relative to where you live, someone in the arctic circle is calling Torontonians southerners right now.

[–]jax9999 18 points19 points ago

-10? oh you sweet summer knight...

[–]Blacksheep01Winter Is Coming 2 points3 points ago

That's Fahrenheit, I have no idea what that is in Celsius you damn metric users!

Just checked on a converter, that's -23 Celsius, cold enough for you bastards? It gets colder than that sometimes also ;)

[–]jax9999 7 points8 points ago

i'm one of the small percent of canadians that liv farther north than the rest. so, -23 isnt that big a deal.

ever had your hair freeze?

[–]Blacksheep01Winter Is Coming 4 points5 points ago

Nope I have not, you win, wildling.

[–]Ken_Breadbox 0 points1 point ago

[–]AetherIsWaitingFaceless Men -1 points0 points ago

that french sentence is like the epitome of north of the wall

[–]AetherIsWaitingFaceless Men 1 point2 points ago

I used to make the mistake of showering in the morning durring winter. Bad times for my already damaged hair.

[–]righteous_scout 0 points1 point ago

Southern Vermont here.

When does your hair freeze? Mine will stay frozen all day if I go outside after a shower.

[–]TestaSKULLSHouse Clegane 0 points1 point ago

Man, if I shower in the morning during winter, my hair will stay damp for at least two hours. Goddamn winters can be brutal in Los Angeles.

[–]xKazimirxHouse Connington 0 points1 point ago

I love my hairsicles!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

I remember sitting by the radio at 6am in elementary school, waiting for the first morning weather report. It was common knowledge that if that report said it was -36 degrees or below, they wouldn't start up the buses and we didn't have to go to school.

Those -35 days were a bitch.

[–]darkflavour 3 points4 points ago

I know how you feel. My school never included the damn wind chill... -35 feels like -50 but you still have to go to school. Goddamn brutal

[–]Genghis_JohnNight's Watch 8 points9 points ago

-35? Sweet summer children. I waited for the bus outside at -50. No wind, uphill both ways.

/Alaska

[–]amjhwkOur Word Is Good As Gold 2 points3 points ago

why should the uphill both ways matter if you take a bus

[–]Genghis_JohnNight's Watch 0 points1 point ago

I was only acknowledging how much of a curmudgeon I sounded like by referencing that old trope of a grandfather telling how hard it was in his day by saying something like "I had to walk uphill both ways to school."

[–]TestaSKULLSHouse Clegane 1 point2 points ago

Once again, proof of the necessity for the invention of a Sarcasm font.

[–]darkflavour 0 points1 point ago

Where in alaska do/did you live?

[–]Genghis_JohnNight's Watch 2 points3 points ago

Fairbanks. They don't close the schools for shit.

[–]BurgermiesterHouse Lannister 0 points1 point ago

I know that feel, fellow Alaskan.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

On those days, we were at least allowed to stay inside.

[–]AetherIsWaitingFaceless Men 0 points1 point ago

Those morning waking up at 6 to catch the bus to school, literally waiting in pitch blackness for the bus....only to find out after an hour of waiting that school was cancelled. Yeah The Great Mother Fucking Canadian North.

Turned me into a cold, hard person

[–]1norcal415House Reyne -1 points0 points ago

Why anyone would choose to live in a place that cold is beyond me...

(this is coming from a native Cali boy)

[–]Ken_Breadbox 4 points5 points ago

It's a clean, crisp cold. Back when Southern Ontario actually GOT winters, I used to wait for a day at -30--usually sometime in late January/early February--and go for a run around the block in shorts and a tee. I've never felt so alive.

[–]AetherIsWaitingFaceless Men 1 point2 points ago

As a southron Canadian, who lived in many a cold Canadian places, everyday in winter I asked myself the same thing. Why anyone thought it was a good idea to populate Canada is beyond me, why anyone STAYED, they must have been masochists. I'm a descendant of masochists.

[–]1norcal415House Reyne 1 point2 points ago

Hahaha well said!

[–]evilrobotdrew1 6 points7 points ago

I'm from Florida, what is this 'negative temperature' of which you speak?

[–]gjallerhornHouse Greyjoy 1 point2 points ago

You know your freezer? It's colder than that.

[–]squidgyUnbowed, Unbent, Unbroken 1 point2 points ago

Buwahahaha... I grew up in Edmonton. Get back to me when it's -49 and windy. Now I live in Vancouver, and nobody can understand why I like the 14 months a year of rain.

[–]PixelizedApeWinter Is Coming 0 points1 point ago

Where I live it's -40 degrees Celsius without windchill sometimes. It's so cold it makes you want to cry, and I'm not even close to the arctic circle. I can't imagine how bad it gets up there.

[–]xKazimirxHouse Connington 0 points1 point ago

Now try -35C (without windchill)with 35km/h winds and so much falling snow that you can only see 15 feet ahead of you, add in snow dunes 5 feet deep and you got yourself an average Northern Alberta winter.

[–]keagmcGHouse Umber 0 points1 point ago

One second..... What do you define as "Upstate?" You better not be one of those people from Syracuse or Albany who thinks they live Upstate.

[–]jax9999 0 points1 point ago

I have an american friend from virginia. It tickles me to call him a yankee. he gets all flustered

[–]UseThe4s 62 points63 points ago

The north holds all sorts of terrible things. Moose as large as a house, direbeavers, and the worst of them, the Others. I hear the Others speak a strange and foreign tongue, called "french."

[–]wagerhopeValar Morghulis 18 points19 points ago

I'd totally warg a direbeaver.

[–]KingToasty 4 points5 points ago

Well that's the strangest stentence I've read in a while.

[–]jberthUnbowed, Unbent, Unbroken 9 points10 points ago

The Other slid gracefully from the saddle to stand upon the snow. Sword-slim it was, and milky white. Its armor rippled and shifted as it moved, and its feet did not break the crust of the new-fallen snow. As its ominous presence filled the meadow, it yelled out, "VIENS DONC ICITTE QUE J'TE PETE LA YEULE MON GROS CALISS DE TABARNAK"

[–]ya_tu_sabes 2 points3 points ago

Wait... Am I an Other?? O_O

Also, french is the official 2nd language and most (if not all) Canadians study it at least a little in elementary/ high school (depending on where you live). Are we ALL Others?!?!% The invasion.... it begins...

[–]classy_stegasaurusHouse Seaworth 0 points1 point ago

Sometimes it freezes together. Other times it just gets all slushy

[–]overide 0 points1 point ago

Freezer? Like the box on the top of my refrigerator?

[–]classy_stegasaurusHouse Seaworth 1 point2 points ago

No, no, the white stuff. It freezes. It gets harder and more solid. Like the ice you fellows put in lemonade

[–]UseThe4s 3 points4 points ago

Damn southerners.

[–]cek812Night's Watch 64 points65 points ago

I would think that people that lived on the U.S. side of the border would be the Night's Watch, while the Canadians would be the wildlings. Also pretty sure that I live right by U.S. equivalent of Castle Black, Niagara Falls.

[–]Phaethon_Rhadamanthu 74 points75 points ago

That would make Cleveland one of the abandoned forts west of castle black. Cold, empty, and stripped of anything valuable.

[–]ReducedToRubbleA Promise Was Made 66 points67 points ago

Detroit, too. It fits perfectly.

[–]GeologySucks[!] 1 point2 points ago

Though Windsor/Detroit is still the busiest border crossing.

[–]TMWNN 1 point2 points ago

Yes, but then who is the equivalent to Kwame Kilpatrick, the "Hip-hop Mayor"/convicted criminal? The Night's Watch has the "black" part down, but not much else in this case.

[–]nate250 3 points4 points ago

Would that make Buffalo Winterfell...?

[–]CrunxMan 1 point2 points ago

I hope so.

[–]Time_TerminalNight's Watch 1 point2 points ago

I'd have to say Chicago.

[–]NittLion78House Greyjoy 0 points1 point ago

I'd say Minneapolis.

Duluth is Mole Town.

[–]cek812Night's Watch 0 points1 point ago

Geographically, yes, although I think that Rochester would make a better Winterfell.

[–]nate250 1 point2 points ago

I'm inclined to agree with you simply because Rochester is home, but can't come up with a valid reason... (Other than the fact that it was the leader of Rochester that was summoned to the capital to serve as Cuomo's right-hand-man)

[–]cek812Night's Watch 0 points1 point ago

I guess Rochester just seems more, I don't know, lordly? I really can't picture the Starks living in Buffalo.

[–]apotreNight's Watch 0 points1 point ago

What about Syracuse guys?

[–]cek812Night's Watch 0 points1 point ago

Hm, I'm not sure. You might be stuck in between Winterfell and whatever the Dreadfort is.

[–]apotreNight's Watch 0 points1 point ago

I am not from Syracuse, just went to school there. What a terrible terrible place.

[–]JamesGrayHouse Stark 9 points10 points ago

The portion of the population of Canada that lives within a stone's throw from the border makes it more viable that we're the Night's Watch though. It's just the far northerners that're wildlings, and the northern states are the northern lords.

[–]thewetcoastHouse Baratheon of Dragonstone 18 points19 points ago

No, no, no. The States are the Seven Kingdoms, Canadians are the Night's Watch, Canada is the Wall and its adjacent land, because the Russians are the Wildlings. Just the Wall and the Night's Watch separate the Others and the wildlings, Canada provide the United States a buffer from Russian invasion. Which was actually the case in the Cold War, there were actually a few lines of radar sweeping the country to warn of Soviet advance.

[–]TurnshroudHouse Lannister 9 points10 points ago

I think from a historical POV, this actually kind of works. Although Alaska belongs to the Americans now. Maybe Alska is the Night's Watch and Canada is the North and the Stark lands?

[–]GinniganHouse Baelish 1 point2 points ago

I just wish we could incorporate The Gift somehow.

If only the population were switched and spread along the border of the Territories, rather than the Canadian/US Border. Then the southern half of Canada would be The Gift; the Provinces/Territories border would be The Wall; the majority of Canadians would be The Night's Watch; and the Territories would be North of the Wall (a fearsome land of polar bears, caribou and direwolves.)

Of course, then we'd all be as cold and miserable as the men on The Wall.

[–]Genghis_JohnNight's Watch 0 points1 point ago

That's it! You provincial Canadians are wildlings already living in the Gift. And the Territorial folks are the Watchers on the Wall. Or something. Maybe just Edmonton.

[–]thewetcoastHouse Baratheon of Dragonstone 2 points3 points ago

That makes more sense. Alaska/Northern Canada totally work more specifically, considering the government has been expanding our military presence in the North/Arctic to assert our sovereignty. And the North does seem be a more culturally mild region, like Canada. Hell, Stephen Harper can even stand in for ASoFI.

[–]Genghis_JohnNight's Watch 0 points1 point ago

Hence my flair.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]SawRubOurs Is The Fury 2 points3 points ago

[–]mainsworthHouse Baelish 0 points1 point ago

Niagara Falls would be Eastwatch.

[–]cek812Night's Watch 0 points1 point ago

Well I was mostly thinking in terms of population and awareness. Niagara Falls probably is the most well known part of the border. But yes, geographically Castle Black would be more west.

[–]shouldacookiesNight's Watch -1 points0 points ago

we're keeping you protected from aboriginals and polar bears, were the watch!!!!!ONE

That's traces of last year's winter, not the coming winter... still getting a bit of snow in June is not uncommon.

[–]BrittyLynnBFire And Blood 0 points1 point ago

Every Canadian knows that. The uncommon thing about it is the 30 degree weather + severe thunderstorms + tornado's + 6 inches of snow all in a couple of days.

[–]BrassTaxationHouse Dayne 1 point2 points ago

For some reason, in Iowa, we have really cold, shitty, icy winters and hot, humid summers. It's never just snow, here. It ice storms and sleets and fucks shit up. In the summer, we have a higher heat index than Texas because it's So. Fucking. Humid. Iowa weather is a bitch.

[–]breannabalaamHouse Stark 0 points1 point ago

Wisconsin is just as bad, if not worse.

We can easily have a winter at -20 degrees without the windchill and a summer at 110 degrees. And then we get the humidity too x_x

It is pretty harsh in Duluth, MN though. God damn largest freshwater lake effect!

I Always thought of the set-up in game of thrones as a united kingdom thing. There is a lot of animosity between the north/south divide, with kings landing representing london and winterfell being newcastle perhaps. Scotland represents the harsh cold climate complete with wildling red heads. Plus we actually do have a wall, Hadrian's Wall! A few months early. It's gonna be hot and humid as all balls for the next 3 months in sw ontario. Woohoo for smog!

[–]grania17 0 points1 point ago

Well you aren't doing a very good job of it. I remember one winter in Montana where we had -40 for a week. It was miserable!

[–]BurgermiesterHouse Lannister 0 points1 point ago

As an Alaskan, everyone seems green. "It's forty degrees outside? Ah, shorts and tank top weather"

[–]AryaayraYou Know Nothing 0 points1 point ago

So is Minnesota like Moles Town?

[–]rockerchuWe Do Not Sow 0 points1 point ago

So what does this make Alaska?!

[–]MaxTheMadHouse Dondarrion -3 points-2 points ago

God dammit, as a Canadian from southern Ontario, this whole thing really does not help the stereotype that "CANADA IS COLD ALL THE TIME AND WINTER IS EVERYWHERE! HUR DUR"

Edit: some people take this shit way too seriously

[–]Crecy 4 points5 points ago

Why not embrace it, it makes you sound badass

[–]zoso33Maesters of the Citadel -1 points0 points ago

Does this mean that I'm Maester Aemon?

[–]the_empire_of_death -1 points0 points ago

I imagine Canada as Trailer Park Boys...just with more trailers.

[–]AmadeusBKingsguard -1 points0 points ago

The wall is manned by the alaskans, not canadians.

[–]MisterLogic -3 points-2 points ago

So by this logic: Canadians are a bunch of incestuous daughter banging weirdos.

[–]ArcanumIE 2 points3 points ago

DAMN straight we are!!
