I know what you mean, but it's pop music, it's meant to be absorbed by the masses. Thus nothing about the song is new or interesting, just a catchy beat and lyrics people can relate to.

There's no such thing as innovative pop music? What about "Climax"? That song peaked at #17 on the US Hot 100. And why does a song need to be "innovative" to be good? Not all musicians have to be like Beck, Björk, or Radiohead. "Umbrella", "Can't Get You Out of My Head", and "Since U Been Gone" are consistently regarded as some of the best songs of the last decade and they were all written by some of today's biggest hitmakers, with the songs themselves working well within the confines of contemporary Top 40 radio. Just because a song is catchy or is supposed to appeal to the masses doesn't make it bad. Being bad makes a song bad.

I just said that it technically doesn't mean its bad... Just uninteresting to a lot of people. Obviously very interesting to a lot of people too. Also saying any pop song was on a popular song list isn't really getting the point across, they are meant to be popular.

Hm. Yes. I seem to have misunderstood your point. However, it's not just a list of "popular songs", it's a list of the "best songs". Pitchfork, one of the most indie-oriented music sites, ranked all three of those songs on their best songs of the 2000s list at #25, #37, and #21, respectively. "Umbrella" and "Since U Been Gone" have been on several others I've seen, including Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list, which also includes many prominent indie and classic rock songs.

And that's fine, I mean no genre is devoid of good music, to my musical tastes, country, pop, and a lot of rap have little merit, but I realize that it is only my opinion, and that music that can be considered "good" (which is such a relative term to begin with) can be found everywhere.
