HAHAH, that's hilarious, that's my worse fear about holding fish, is that they start squirming and shaking like that. I have no problem holding them, trying to get the hook out of their mouth. I just immediately let go as soon as they do that b/c their fins are spikey as hell.

[–]pugwalker 250 points251 points ago

This little gif/clip (without the bass) was the first image of skrillex I ever saw so i thought he was a woman for like a month.

[–]raymond_noodles 96 points97 points ago

Holy shit, I thought it was Katy Perry.

[–]thechaserx 94 points95 points ago

"it"

[–]Abezilla116 14 points15 points ago

A child Called "it" is a pretty good read by the way...

[–]thechaserx 11 points12 points ago

Wow, thanks for the disturbing flashbacks.

[–]Abezilla116 4 points5 points ago

While I went through similar things as that kid, I could always read it and realize that my problems weren't as bad.

[–]funfungiguy 3 points4 points ago

Yeah... there was some similarities there for me too. Oddly, I love my mom, yet hate David's mom, and feel bad about hating David's mom.

[–]Abezilla116 2 points3 points ago

Wow. Never thought I'd hear that. Its the same story with me. I hate my mom for what she did to me but I love her at the same time because, well, she's mom.

[–]TheChosenOne013 25 points26 points ago

I honestly didn't even know this person is a male until I saw your comment. I keep seeing things about Skrillex on Reddit, but I've never actually heard/seen him (them?) before.

[–]FalafelWaffel 17 points18 points ago

Before I knew what/who Skrillex was, I thought it was a brand of condoms. Maybe because I refer to ejaculate as skrill.

[–]Killfuck_Soulshitter 2 points3 points ago

Wouldn't a spermicide make more sense for Skrill-Ex?

[–]mattofmattfame 26 points27 points ago

Wait, Skrillex is a man?

[–]PwnBuddy 26 points27 points ago

"it's a boy, look at his boobies."

[–]Stormageddon222 1 point2 points ago

Do you just happen to be watching Monsters vs Aliens right now?

[–]Sniglet5000 4 points5 points ago

[–]Billquisha -2 points-1 points ago

Me too, pugwalker, me too.

[–]goofball_jones 25 points26 points ago

I've turned into my dad.

Seriously. I was a teen in the late 70's and my dad would look at me like I was crazy when I would listen to Led Zeppelin and The Who or the Stones and say "that's just crap, it's just noise. What's wrong with you?"

I mean, I understood the music through the 80's...crappy as it was...got into the 90's and understood grunge and all that. And while I didn't particularly care for it, I at least "got" rap and hip-hop.

But this shit? I just don't get it. I don't understand the draw of it. Seriously, it all sounds the same to me. So yes, I've turned into my dad.

[–]cronis 4 points5 points ago

He is one of the few artists that I can actually tell the difference in his songs. Go listen to "Cinema" if that song doesn't make you want to dance your ass off. (In a wild, stress relieving way) Then it probably isn't for you.

Music isn't much different than TV, I think that Big Bang Theory and CSI are something only a retard would enjoy. Then someone extremely intelligent would tell me how much they like those shows.

[–]Jeembo 2 points3 points ago

Upvoted for not being a tool about it.

[–]ftang777 1 point2 points ago

Do that mean... Music is "good" depending on the generations?

[–]goofball_jones 1 point2 points ago

dunno what it means. Just saying I've become old I guess.

[–]spirited1 -1 points0 points ago

it's good because your friends say so

[–]KittenCarousel 0 points1 point ago

I know I might be beating a dead horse with this, but take a listen to some artists like Brown & Gammon, some of Bassnectar's remixes, Doctor P, etc. I'm not a Skrillex fan myself, but I think it largely depends on the style of the individual artist. It really is more diverse a genre than people give it credit for.

Also, check out Pretty Lights (if you haven't).

[–]goofball_jones 0 points1 point ago

I haven't. I'm actually going backwards in time with my musical tastes. There's literally several lifetimes of music listening out there...so I have a very finite period of time left in my life to listen to music, read books, watch movies. There's SO much in the past that I haven't listened to or heard such as jazz and early bluegrass and other types of music...not to mention repeat listenings to music I enjoy and want to hear again.

I literally (and yes, that word is being used correctly here) have no time to pile on even MORE music that's coming out today. Might my tastes not be relevant? No. But then again, I'm not really concerned about that.

Maybe when I'm in my 80's (30 years from now), I'll look back on this era of music. If I last that long...

[–]violentacrez 0 points1 point ago

I feel the same way about screamo.

[–]treitter -1 points0 points ago

I love electronic music (and most other genres) but his stuff makes me cringe. It's not just you.

[–]lostvan 13 points14 points ago

Does anyone really have anything on the internet?

[–]y2kh8r 0 points1 point ago

Only if you save it to your hard drive. I remember I used to save funny pictures, probably still have a few CDs full of them from 2002.

[–]NicholsonsEyebrows 1 point2 points ago

Well I'm having a sheeeit Monday at work but that cheered me up. Slapper da bass.

[–]iamstephano 4 points5 points ago

SLAPPA DA BASS MAN

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I was driving to school and I thought about this. I said bass and bass are spelled the same I should make a gif with skrillix dropping the bass. I am not funny or unique.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points ago

All of his tracks are pre-recorded, I'm pretty sure that thing isn't plugged and he just fiddle with it to justify being on stage.

[–]hi_internet 87 points88 points ago

His tracks are pre-recorded but as someone who mixes and makes music recreationally, I can attest to the fact that there are many creative options for mixing on stage. It takes quite a bit of skill, effort and creativity to mix as well as he does and as long as a crowd enjoys it, I saw no issue with what he does.

Some people just crossfade when performing live and I have respect for the fact Skrillex uses creative methods to mix live.

Here's a video of him performing live, he's using ableton to mix. That stuff he's performing isn't a pre-recorded set, the tracks may be but he's adding different elements to the track live.

[–]A_THOUSAND_POUNDS 51 points52 points ago

GOD I wish he'd leave his fucking hair alone. STOP TOUCHING IT

[–]Honestly_ 20 points21 points ago

He should start a sponsored brand of Skrillex Scrunci. Or be like Dre and call it "Scrunci by Skrillex". The slogan can be "It will never drop your hair" or something.

[–]tidderwork 13 points14 points ago

you have a future in marketing.

[–]Onelouder 6 points7 points ago

"Drop the bass, not your hair" -Skrunchi by Skrillex

[–]EmperorSofa 13 points14 points ago

[–]JSLEnterprises 23 points24 points ago

worse than an insecure girl.

[–]BullshitUsername 2 points3 points ago

You see that he actually does something onstage now, so you move on to his hair... CAN THE MAN DO ANYTHING RIGHT

[–]bentonetc 0 points1 point ago

Not if involves hair ties.

[–]DAVENP0RT 7 points8 points ago

Once you know what to look for in a good DJ, you realize just how difficult it is to mix in a live setting.

[–]oneliam 33 points34 points ago

He does use Ableton, but he uses it in the most primative way. All he has is effectively the two decks set up on channel's A & B. And all he does to go into the next track is cue it up, click it (with beat match on, so ableton does all the hard work) and then bamo, he's 'crossfaded' it to the next track. There's an image somewhere explaining why he isn't just not good, but actually bad. It explains the ableton thing better than I can, with illustrations, and examples. And states that he didn't even write his better songs, instead paid people out of the Diplo camp to write them and produce them. I'll try and find it, but if anyone knows what I'm on about then do post.

[–]hi_internet 13 points14 points ago

Yeah, if you have the source I would be interested.

[–]munchybot 37 points38 points ago

[–]logga 10 points11 points ago

That's really interesting, cheers for posting.

[–]hi_internet 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for delivering. I don't think it's possible to confirm whether this is true or not considering it is 4chan. However, it does seem like a lot of thought was put into these posts so I don't know for sure. It's an interesting point though.

[–]iGotChubs4You 9 points10 points ago

How could you possibly use a 4chan post as any sort of proof of this?

[–]hangerbaby 9 points10 points ago

It seems well reasoned and knowledgeable. What's the problem here?

[–]nightzirk 18 points19 points ago

He doesn't provide any real sources for his claims that Feed Me and Excision have produced most of Skrillex's newer songs. It's just speculation. All he gives us is "If you look hard enough, you'll find evidence". Well, if there's evidence, why don't you just tell us what it is instead of being vague?

[–]Andythefan 7 points8 points ago

It also seems very biased, and the fact that it was posted on 4Chan doesn't necessarily mean it's true.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you, but I just don't think that a screencap of a 4chan post alone is enough to be proof.

[–]hangerbaby 4 points5 points ago

You can watch Skrillex pov live shows, you can kind of tell that what this 4chan thread was talking about is most likely true

[–]iGotChubs4You 0 points1 point ago

People will take anything at face value to be able to hate on Skrillex. I don't like him/dubstep at all, but I at least know to be honest with myself.

[–]munchybot 0 points1 point ago

I'm just providing the image oneliam is speaking of. Plus, while it's just speculation, as someone with years of Ableton experience I feel I can say that it is very sensible speculation.

[–]iGotChubs4You 0 points1 point ago

I know how to use Ableton, too. What are you basing this off of other than your bias against Skrillex? There is a screenshot showing how crossfading and beat matching is done in Ableton and then an explanation as to how it is done. What in the fuck does that do to prove Skrillex does that? Because that's what you want to believe? I don't even like Skrillex, but at least use some reason when you confront your biases.

[–]munchybot 0 points1 point ago

Have you listened to his live shows and compared them to his recorded tracks? Everything pointed out in that post sounds true to me. I'm not biased against Skrillex. I said it was just speculation.

[–]iamstephano -4 points-3 points ago

That's fucking ridiculous, his older songs were floating around the internet for ages before he got big as "Skrillex", and he definitely produced them. Why is everyone attacking him? I could say the same shit about any electronic music producer and use someone else's explanation about why they're bad, and I know the image you're talking about (taken from 4chan) and it's ridiculous.

[–]Thecrumblingcookie 0 points1 point ago

You do realize that Skrillex is actually Sunny Moore, the lead singer from the band From First to Last right?

That he used his fan base from that band in order to get the word out about his "solo act" and started calling himself Skrillex shortly after...

[–]iamstephano -1 points0 points ago

Yes, I do know who *Sonny Moore is, and about his band, but he didn't use it to get word out he just moved on to his electronic music production that he'd been doing independently even while in the band.

[–]The_Great_Kal 3 points4 points ago

My god. He has a posse onstage with him..

[–]gloria_snockers 3 points4 points ago

[–]edwardunknown 5 points6 points ago

I admire anybody who can make money in music but you could literally teach a monkey to do what he does. Which would be awesome, somebody get to work on that.

[–]Doctorwubwub 4 points5 points ago

If only it were that easy. As someone who is trying to learn to produce, it's not easy. It takes time and dedication just like anything else. :/ Have a nice day!

[–]y2kh8r 2 points3 points ago

Yep. What's that? You want to learn to play an instrument, compose and mix music? Hope you've got a decade to spare!

[–]Doctorwubwub 0 points1 point ago

Pretty much! Learning piano right now, for obvious reasons. It's a pain in the ass.

[–]edwardunknown 0 points1 point ago

You're not comparing learning an instrument to whatever it is Skrillix does, that takes years, a human can learn Ableton in a week. I bet I can teach a monkey to press the button to get food when the song is almost over and have it perform in a month. Put a wig and stupid glasses on it and I'll be a millionaire. A little auto tuning and the bastard will be selling out arenas.

[–]y2kh8r 0 points1 point ago

No, I wasn't talking about Skrillex, was talking about being a one-man studio/band. I have no idea about the creative process that Skrillex uses.

[–]edwardunknown 0 points1 point ago

Hmm yeah I don't think I can train a monkey to be Trent Reznor.

[–]hi_internet 1 point2 points ago

I would seriously pay to see that.

[–]Doctorwubwub 1 point2 points ago

If only it were that easy. As someone who is trying to learn to produce, it's not easy. It takes time and dedication just like anything else. :/ Have a nice day!

[–]hi_internet 2 points3 points ago

Me too. by the way /r/edmproduction if you don't already know about this subreddit. ;)

[–]Doctorwubwub 1 point2 points ago

Yup! I am subbed <3

[–]kingssman 5 points6 points ago

I find skrillex amateur live compared to say Tiesto http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZmE3fUKU5U&feature=youtube_gdata_player.

This is what live is like where you can assemble and disassemble tracks on the fly as you lead into other songs. The vid looks like a one long pre-recorded but its really mixing it live.

[–]hangerbaby 26 points27 points ago

Tiesto is boring, Skrillex is terrible, I'm an opinionated asshole

[–]kingssman 4 points5 points ago

It's cool. Everyone has their particular taste in music.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]PastaNinja 4 points5 points ago

Pretty silly excuse for him imo. Would you excuse a rock band's inability to play their instruments live because "they're more songwriters than musicians really".

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]PastaNinja 8 points9 points ago

I'm not even sure if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me, but your comparison to Bach is beyond retarded. Yes, he can't play all of them at once because he's not a fucking octopus, but he could play the instruments he composed music for, and was pretty fucking good at it. Dance music not being a performance art is also a retarded statement. So is "dance music is 4/4". Being that it's much easier to compose music via a computer than via live instruments, I think it's a pretty logical conclusion that people expect more out of people who program music using computers. I'm sure if Bach was alive today, he'd run circles around Skrillex using Ableton after a day of practice.

You should stop ranting and actually think through your devotion to Skrillex.

[–]soul_power 7 points8 points ago

I'd pay damn good money to see a Bachtopus perform the 9th.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]PastaNinja 0 points1 point ago

Its a lot harder working with more complicated tools than using a pencil and paper to write the notes in.

Really? You just jot down the notes with a pencil for an orchestra and every instrument's gonna sound perfect right off the bat like that? Or maybe it's a long iterative process where for each instrument you have to keep in mind how it sounds on its own, AND part of the greater whole. And that unless you have an orchestra of people at your disposal, you'll have to try out each one individually, and then basically imagine how they'll all fit together in your head. And all this for an hour-long composition, not a 3 minute track. This is monumentally more difficult than being able to fuck about with synths on a computer and instantly hearing the final result, deleting, adding, tweaking, and reworking as you see fit. It's the difference between digital photography and darkroom photography, except magnified by a factor of 10 (100?).

Skrillex himself is not always 4/4. And there's lots of dance music out there that is not 4/4 - Breaks, Dubstep, and Drum & Bass.

I LOVE electronic music, and don't particularly care for classical compositions, but there is no comparison between the level of difficulty in making an orchestral composition with no recording tools in 1674, and banging tunes out using modern software.

[–]Jusscurio 0 points1 point ago

After watching that video all I can think of is what a fucken awesome life. Partying every night with hundreds of people loving the same thing you do. They are all just there to have a good time and you get paid lots of money to provide that good time. This moment at 50 seconds is what I'm talking about. Got his cigs, his drink, awesome lights, loud music and people around you dancing and partying. I envy that man. I needa become a DJ. I'm too lazy though so I'd prob suck at it then give up haha.

[–]BlackestNight21 0 points1 point ago

I just learned, I really don't like dubstep, thank you.

[–]DemianMusic 2 points3 points ago

I don't really like his music, but there is nothing wrong with how he plays it live. I am not really impressed by his sets, but there is nothing wrong with using a laptop and controller as long as you are still mixing the tracks. Some of the best do it this way: Vibe squad, ill gates, bass nectar, mimosa...granted I think those guys put on way better sets using the same technology.

[–]etgggg 22 points23 points ago

He's in a pretty precarious position, he creates music that tons of people enjoy, so he's going to perform on stage to make money touring, but the music itself doesn't lend itself as well to live performances. As long as everyone has a good time, who cares what he's doing onstage man.

[–]herimitho 37 points38 points ago

Well, Daft Punk was able to do both.

[–]etgggg 37 points38 points ago

and Daft Punk are amazing musicians, comparing Skrillex to them is dooming him to failure.

[–]iamstephano 5 points6 points ago

Not everyone can be Daft Punk.

[–]StorKuken -2 points-1 points ago

I was looking for someone to mention Daft Punk so I can give a upvote.

[–]PastaNinja 3 points4 points ago

Saying that electronic music (and if we want to get specific, Dubstep) doesn't lend itself well to live performances is so utterly utterly wrong.

For decades, DJs have been doing more with two decks, a simple mixer, and a crate of vinyl than Skrillex has with Ableton Live, which I should point out gives him the tools to do FAR MORE than he is. It's like having a huge art set at your disposal, but choosing to stick your left index finger in the blue paint, and right index finger in the orange paint, and limiting yourself to just that.

[–]ThisIsMyCouchAccount 6 points7 points ago

Now you're mixing with portals.

[–]L_x 4 points5 points ago

Live covers of skrillex are as good/better than the real thing. He/she should do something similar for live shows.

[–]etgggg 2 points3 points ago

Haha that is better, but how would he contribute? He was the lead singer in a band prior to becoming skrillex, but I don't think he uses his own vocals in his songs, so his performance wouldn't have a place for him.

[–]Konradov 0 points1 point ago

That is... Woah.

[–]the_timmer_42 0 points1 point ago

WTF is the bass player doing there?

[–]TheSevenKhumquats 3 points4 points ago

The thing he's using is called a 'Hot Hand'. Basically works as a whammy pedal like the one for a guitar, except this one is for bass and you can control it with your hand!

[–]DrTeethandtheEM 2 points3 points ago

He didn't even drop it once.

[–]the_timmer_42 0 points1 point ago

Hahaha I didn't even think that through.

[–]KevinMcCallister 1 point2 points ago

He's using some sort of technology.

Real musicians does.

[–]maximosa 36 points37 points ago

[–]rmm45177 9 points10 points ago

[–]adolfojp 1 point2 points ago

English is not my native language and I always encourage people to correct me. It's the best way to learn a second language properly.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]etgggg 5 points6 points ago

That's your opinion, but I think it's really naive to think that a a guy who is selling tons of records, and tons of tour dates isn't even a real musician. Being able to record a good album, and put on a good show are two different skill sets, but you don't necessarily need either to be a real musician.

[–]Hokusai_kun 2 points3 points ago

Etgggg is right. There have been amazing studio groups that just can't perform live get just as much respect and fame as groups that could.

[–]ModRod 4 points5 points ago

Hell, The Beatles did that intentionally.

[–]MrTurkle 0 points1 point ago

Wait, what? The Beatles were renowned for their live performances.

[–]ModRod 3 points4 points ago

They stopped touring in 1966, and started creating music that would be near impossible to perform live.
