Swear to God, I only work out because my apartment's fitness center has cable, and it's open for free 24 hours. Sundays at 10, the TV across from the treadmill is mine. Mad Men.

[–]coogie 2 points3 points ago

I stream most of my favorite shows, but one thing missing is live sports (although now with ESPN3 and TNT's overtime it's not that big of an issue in the playoffs) but part of the reason I cancelled cable was it would force me to at least burn off some calories while watching the games. Best decision so far...probably saved $2000 so far.

[–]redfive5tandingby 1 point2 points ago

In the two days since I discovered my gym had cable, I've burned 800 calories.

[–]tsg9292 0 points1 point ago

I bet you've gained much more than that!

[–]GarththeGarth 0 points1 point ago

What makes you say that?

[–]tsg9292 0 points1 point ago

Not trying to be rude or anything, but it's normal for people to consume anywhere from 2000 to 3000 calories on a given day. Granted, things like working out and every day activities balance it all out.

[–]GarththeGarth 0 points1 point ago

Exactly, so he wouldn't really be gaining any more calories since his net calories would be equal or less due to the actual burned calories, increases in metabolism, etc.

[–]tsg9292 0 points1 point ago

Well yeah, ideally that's true. I'm just saying that the OP is gaining more calories in a day than they are losing soley by working out.

[–]namfonos 9 points10 points ago

just wow.

[–]wimpykid 16 points17 points ago

Her bag looks like it's staring at her in disappointment.

[–]chewy732 10 points11 points ago

It almost looks like one of the Easter Island statues lmfao

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points ago

They should make it so that you have to actually walk/run on the treadmill so that the TV will work.

[–]darwin1859 11 points12 points ago

Yes, the workout equipment should supply power to the TVs! The faster you go, the better the picture and sound.

[–]lndifference 6 points7 points ago

Come on now, everybody by now should know that these things do not provide even nearly enough power...

[–]xBladeDragonx 1 point2 points ago

You can totally hook up a RF box to the treadmill or bike and once power is detected, the RF box can signal a circuit breaker connected to the TV.. As long as the RF is constantly transmitting, the breaker stays connected... RF cuts off because power stops flowing from treadmill/bike, breaker switches off :D

I'm sure there's some way to deal with low power RF transmitters... Even if the transmitter is running on say 75% power from outlet and have the last 25% come from the treadmill/bike itself....

Just a thought....

[–]darwin1859 0 points1 point ago

Back off! It's my dream man, OK!?

[–]lndifference 0 points1 point ago

[–]MrKrazybones 0 points1 point ago

It can be a similar concept like how you blow into a breathalizer to start a car

[–]fknRAIDEN -3 points-2 points ago

breathalyzers can start cars? MIND=BLOWN

[–]ckb614 0 points1 point ago

Actually they do. The average LED tv is about 100W. Most electricity generating bikes max out at 250-400W

[–]aweg 0 points1 point ago

It could power the on/off, channel and volume buttons!

[–]dniced 7 points8 points ago

This is not how buttons work.

[–]aweg 6 points7 points ago

My knowledge of electronic buttons is so little that I assume they work by magic. But isn't there a way that the buttons could be disabled unless the treadmill is moving? Not "powered by," I guess.

[–]dniced 2 points3 points ago

Let's patent that shit. It'd be extremely simple.

Edit: You'd just need a rotary encoder and some sort of pressure sensor to detect the weight of the person on the treadmill. For self-powered treadmills that is. It'd look like this:

encoder - treadmill moving?

pressure sensor - person on the treadmill?

remote(IR) -> arduino (check sensor data via xbee etc) -> yes/no -> arduino(IR) -> tv function

[–]aweg 0 points1 point ago

My main question would be: what does it solve? Are there really enough people who set up camp on treadmill that this would have merits? It could be good for saving energy in larger gyms - has the treadmill belt moved or has a user been standing on it in the last 5 minutes? No - > turn off entertainment.

On the other hand, something that would delay function until a certain wattage output is met (on bikes/airdynes and anything with active resistance) would be pretty neat. I am a college student so I have access to a bad ass rec center, but it's filled with people who are cycling at maybe 10rpm and watching seinfeld. That's a real, observable problem. More productivity = better client results = lead conversions and client retention.

"But I don't wanna break a sweat!" " NO SEINFELD FOR YOU."

[–]TrueMilli 7 points8 points ago

Reminds me of the guy who donates next to everything he earns to charity (sleeps, eats in hostel for the homeless), but has a gym membership because it's the cheapest way to have a shower every morning.

[–]Warkitz 10 points11 points ago

So people can put a chair on a treadmill, but if I drop a weight, even on accident, I'll get kicked out. This some bullshit.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

Lunk alarm

[–]JSLEnterprises 5 points6 points ago

basic gym membership is 1/3rd the monthly cost of basic cable. It's fucked up.

[–]Boner_Police01 -1 points0 points ago

That's what causes that situation in the first place..

[–]kinnaq -2 points-1 points ago

one-third-rd?

[–]JSLEnterprises -1 points0 points ago

one third. 1 / 3rd. It's that simple. its not '3rdrd'. One over three = 1/3

As a descriptive, it's correct. If the content of the comment was constricted to only a mathematical equation then '1/3' is 'one third'.

[–]PhoenixDGrey 19 points20 points ago

i want so bad for someone to turn the treadmill on right now. does this make me a bad person?

[–]FuckTheCharacterLimi 50 points51 points ago

No, you're a pretty good person. You make a terrible horse, though.

[–]PhoenixDGrey 0 points1 point ago

Hey, leave aunt sarah out of this.

[–]kinboyatuwo -3 points-2 points ago

Are you sure not a donkey?

[–]Shmoppy -4 points-3 points ago

I thought the exact same thing.

[–]Chaster321 7 points8 points ago

Simpsons did it.

[–]DIGGYRULES 9 points10 points ago

There are SO MANY fucking morons at my gym who do NOTHING except SIT on the FUCKING equipment and watch television. There is an old lady who comes in wearing street clothes and props herself onto one of the exercise bikes where she languidly peddles the bike about a half revolution per minute...while she flips through the channels and flirts with whatever old man is closest. I don't know why it bothers me so very much. It takes nothing from me...nothing...and they pay their membership the same as I do, but it does. For some reason it really does bother me to see people sitting on equipment and NOT working out; but watching television or texting people.

[–]haidaguy 23 points24 points ago

Why does it bother you?

Let me try to sort through that from my own disgust for the same thing.

I think it disgusts us because

  1. it defeats the entire purpose of the gym as a facility meant to challenge you

  2. it distracts other people

  3. those people are taking up machines that much more motivated people could be using

  4. People like this are DISPLAYING their laziness People who actually use the gym hate laziness because it stands in opposition to everything we value. It's like an atheist walking into a mosque...not to worship...just to flirt with men and talk about the greatness of atheism

I'm kinda just talking to myself...trying to figure out why I hate these people too. Does that come close?

[–]aboganza 7 points8 points ago

besides #2, as a paying member, they have the right to do whatever the fuck they want.

[–]powdka 1 point2 points ago

It's just #3 for me.

I don't give a flying fuck how other people waste their time, but when you're sitting on a piece of equipment I want to use while you're chatting on your phone you can get the fuck out now.

(this actually happened to me the other day, but to be fair she did move when I asked her too)

[–]DIGGYRULES 1 point2 points ago

Yes. This is true. I find it distracting. Also, my gym has this circuit workout system set up where you can do a set of weight equipment for 1 minute - rest for 30 seconds - then do a cardio step for a minute - then rest for 30 seconds and move on to the next weight...etc. etc. etc. It drives me insane when I am trying to do my circuit (which is an AMAZING workout) and some person is just sitting on the equipment texting or staring out the window. GET OFF. GET OFF. GET OFF!!!!

There are PLENTY of free weights and other weight equipment which are not part of the cardio circuit. Go sit there!

[–]Magnora 3 points4 points ago

Half a revolution per minute is better than 0 per minute... That is kinda dumb though.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]DIGGYRULES 1 point2 points ago

Calm down. Didn't I SAY in my post that it doesn't take anything away from me? Didn't I SAY that those people pay their membership fee the same as I do? Didn't I SAY that my anger made no sense?

It just annoys me. I'm not going to go spit on them or something. It just annoys me. How does my honest opinion make me arrogant?

[–]craftkiller 0 points1 point ago

[–]Cupcakes_n_Hacksaws 1 point2 points ago

Someone needs to turn that treadmill on and record it...

[–]sittingbox 1 point2 points ago

Especially at Snap Fitness.

[–]scrape80 1 point2 points ago

If someone was really evil they could wait until they fell asleep and then I would surreptitiously turn this thing on full blast.

Lmao, came here to post this.

[–]NoFaQ 0 points1 point ago

I loved this episode of The Simpsons.

[–]arcanition 0 points1 point ago

Wait your gym has a flat screen for each person?

The gym I went to was $30 per month (and that was a special) and there was maybe 1 flat screen for every 4 machines.

[–]omginorite 0 points1 point ago

That kind of looks like something you would do as physical therapy to transition from being in a wheelchair to walking upright.

[–]katkov 10 points11 points ago

Not quite, for that sort of thing the chair would be off the treadmill.
