It has become even worse with the popularity of Instragram rising.

[–]Sit-Down_Comedian 39 points40 points ago

Especially in Southern Derpifornia. If I see another picture of a beach or pier with that goddamn filter that makes it look like it was shot on Andy Warhol's broken Polaroid through a window covered in Vasoline I'm going to kick a cat into a baby's face.

[–]thenepenthe 4 points5 points ago

Geezus. I don't mean to offend you with my love of Instagram but that shit is just plan fun. I know I'm no photographer, but it's a great free app that gives me little windows of people's view of their world. All over the world, too. So, since I do live in LA and near the beach, I've got a few of those pictures and I fucking love them. My followers seem to enjoy them as well.

[–]Rohm 0 points1 point ago

So, since I do live in LA and near the beach, I've got a few of those pictures and I fucking love them. My followers seem to enjoy them as well.

You're representing the thoughts of everyone who thinks the shitty pictures they take are deep or thought-provoking. Was this an elected or an appointed position?

[–]thenepenthe 0 points1 point ago

I just don't understand why Instagram pisses everyone off. If people enjoy it, what's wrong with it?

I take this position in regards to everything I see people hating on. Clubbing, D&D, stamp collecting, fantasy baseball, foursquare, whatever.

I said "seem" so I don't see how that's me representing everyone's thoughts. I get that this is more sarcasm than a real question but I hope you kind of see what I mean. If it's not bothering anyone with good reason, what's the harm?

[–]half_shark_alligator 0 points1 point ago

I agree with you thenepenthe. I am a photographer, I shoot on film and I like Instagram as well. I never really go on facebook, and instagram is a much more fun and creative way of sharing your experiences with your friends.

[–]FishermansAtlas -5 points-4 points ago

xD so edgy

[–]stellareddit 6 points7 points ago

Vignetting and 50% saturation is the new black and white.

[–]bagada 3 points4 points ago

Fucking Instagram... Ok I admit I use it :(

[–]No_More_Names 2 points3 points ago

This guy has the right idea

[–]SkySilver 0 points1 point ago

The main problem is that many people also post instragram pictures on reddit.

[–]NosyargKcid -1 points0 points ago

It's everywhere on my news feed. That and fucking "like this if....."

[–]Sharradan 26 points27 points ago

Well they are. A photographer is a person who takes photographs. That's the definition. Even if they are girls. Or hot. Or on Facebook. Or use instagram.

[–]imafunghi 6 points7 points ago

pushes taped glasses further up on nose

[–]JAKnighton 0 points1 point ago

As if that doesn't describe everybody who makes posts hating on Facebook.

[–]imafunghi -1 points0 points ago

Touche mon ami, touche...

[–]singularissententia 4 points5 points ago

Honest question:

If someone said to you "I take pictures" and someone else said to you "I am a photographer" would you not think those were two different things?

Wording is much more than just literal definition, it has much more to do with how we, as people, interpret those words.

I don't know about you, but I definitely interpret being "a photographer" as something different than simply taking pictures, even though they are literally the same thing.

[–]PedroElOzo 1 point2 points ago

I am a photographer would be a bold statement made when meeting new people, it'd be a way to present yourself.

It's much stronger than "I take photos".

Even if they add "amateur" to "photographer".

[–]Synn3 6 points7 points ago

looks upon the commenters, who at this point had formed a circle, and saw them pull down each others' garments and begin to slowly stroke each other's penises

[–]JAKnighton 3 points4 points ago

"That'll teach those girls for being out of my league..."

[–]InitiateBioQuasar 13 points14 points ago

Everyone with a camera is a photographer. Don't be so pretentious.

[–]rusty_shaklefurd 12 points13 points ago

"A photographer (from Greek φωτός (photos), meaning "light", and γράφω (graphos), meaning "written") is a person who takes photographs." - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

[–]buon10 1 point2 points ago

Instabrood

[–]speciesIunknown 5 points6 points ago

You know what they say, "The best way to make money as a photographer is to sell your camera."

[–]nepidae 3 points4 points ago

I'd rather have more people taking pictures than fewer people.

[–]steno_light 13 points14 points ago

When a hot girl takes a black and white photo of a lawn chair, it's laughed at. When a real photographer takes a black and white photo of a lawn chair, it's a criticism of the American consumerist society and inevitable destruction of the environment.

[–]Irongrip 4 points5 points ago

I find both groups repulsive.

[–]kakemot -4 points-3 points ago

The difference being that the real photographer knows a thing or two about composition, exposure, choice of lens, post production and more. A real photographer is more capable of communicating something through his images.

[–]cultured_banana_slug 0 points1 point ago

A lawn chair is still just a lawn chair. It says nothing more than, "butts go here".

[–]kakemot 0 points1 point ago

A flower is still just a flower? It says nothing more than "I'm a fish".

No one criticizes people who play golf for not being professional golfers. "It's like anyone who can afford a set of clubs is like 'Oh, look at me, I'm going to hit a golf ball around a golf course.' " People can have hobbies, you guys. Photography is as good a hobby as any other.

[–]numberedswissaccount 9 points10 points ago

I'd say the difference is that people that golf as a hobby know they're not pros, but people with instagram think they have photographic talent

[–]sehajodido 4 points5 points ago

what makes you think they think of themselves as talented? they're using a free tool on an electronic toy to make pictures of their everyday lives not look as boring as they really are. being a pretentious asshole has nothing to do with that.

there definitely are douches out there with the bare minimum of photography equipment, shitting out horrendous images that they shove down people's throats like they were these amazing pieces of art. but, i still think that the majority of the people with an iPhone camera are just fucking around and having fun.

[–]JAKnighton 2 points3 points ago

Can you back that up with numbers, some statistical data? Or is this based entirely off a couple of annoying people on Facebook?

[–]numberedswissaccount -1 points0 points ago

I have no stats, just a personal opinion based off what I've seen

[–]Gothika_47 2 points3 points ago

No! Fuck you. People think people with instagram think they have ptohographic talent. Im suck of people getting mad of me every time i submit a picture with instgram "HURR U NO REAL PHOTOGRAPHER".

[–]MCJokeExplainer 3 points4 points ago

I mean, professional photographers use Instagram for fun, too.

http://instagr.am/p/LVn2x3ld7_/ http://instagr.am/p/K53yn4ld8I/

Seems like everyone is getting their panties in a knot over people having fun. Fun is fun.

[–]Imxset21 7 points8 points ago

What if they actually do have photographic talent, and you're needlessly denigrating them for no reason?

If even only a small percentage of them are actually good photographers, it doesn't make sense to write off the majority of them as talentless hacks.

[–]numberedswissaccount 3 points4 points ago

I didn't mean they are all bad, but I've found that instagram has led many people without talent to think they have some

[–]Imxset21 0 points1 point ago

Any tool that popularizes a skill does that. Heck, universities do that all the time with mandatory intro to CS courses. Undergraduates learn to code a few Python modules and suddenly they think they're CS Raptor Jesus.

I find that it is a necessary evil to give the majority a temporary delusion of grandeur in order to increase the likelihood of the development of natural or new talent.

[–]shadowdude777 0 points1 point ago

Golf is a hobby because it requires skill, and you will improve in it. Taking a picture with Instagram is something my grandma could do. Photography is a fine hobby if you're actually interested in lenses, apertures, and whatever else (I don't know much terminology as photography is not my hobby), but pretending that applying an Instagram filter to your iPhone picture is a "photography hobby" is silly.

[–]MCJokeExplainer 9 points10 points ago

What are you talking about? Plenty of people suck at golf and continue sucking at it. Or building model ships, or playing the piano. You do something fun because it's fun. People go to waterparks because they are fun. Once people start putting arbitrary standards on waterparks, saying you have to be GOOD at the wavepool, then it's not fun. It's one thing if people were marketing their photography skills and selling it as a product, and then you get a bunch of shitty wedding photos with the "Toaster" filter, and you paid a lot of money for it. But people taking photos that they like and putting them on Facebook? It's just fun. Instagram is the iPhone photography equivalent of a waterpark. It's a fun stupid thing to do. Let people have fun.

Plus, if you really feel that you have to strive to get better at something for it to be a legitimate hobby, you could argue that the presence of real photographers on Instagram (using it for fun), is instructive, and people could learn about composition, lighting, etc. from the presence of iPhone photos like these on Instagram: http://instagr.am/p/LVn2x3ld7_/ http://instagr.am/p/K53yn4ld8I/

Found object art is a big part of any fine arts curriculum. The point is using what you have at your disposal to make art. iPhones and Instagram arguably fall into that category. In fact, NYU's Tisch School of the Arts offers a few different classes in the use of cell phones as legitimate methods of creating art. http://filmtv.tisch.nyu.edu/object/BardoshK.html

When photography first appeared on the scene, traditional artists made the same claims of non-seriousness that people make about cell phone work now. But to do that is to underestimate the potential of the medium and misunderstand what its applications are. While my primary point is that people who take Instagram photos are doing it for fun and they're not hurting anybody so they should be allowed to have fun, it's also worth noting that we're marginalizing an entire medium because we feel it's something "my grandma could do."

[–]minimission 2 points3 points ago

how can you say photography is a good hobby but only if you're interested in 'lens, apertures and whatever' but you don't even know anything about photography?

To me at least it's about taking pictures, whether that's on £20 keychain camera, mobile phone or £1,000 DSLR I get a picture, and if I like it all the better.

[–]FragileFrankieMerman 2 points3 points ago

Then you don't know much about photography. Lenses are very unimportant to creating a good photograph.

[–]Imxset21 1 point2 points ago

Filters are as much part of photography as AfterEffects is part of filmography cinematography. Sure, you may make the argument that the widespread availability and ease-of-use cheapens the hobby, but that does not make the hobby less worth pursuing. Who knows, maybe they will take an interest in photography because of Instagram. Denigrating their efforts achieves nothing.

[–]TheSupaBloopa 2 points3 points ago

You're not using that word right. Filmography: a listing of motion pictures by actor, director, genre, etc., and usually including pertinent facts about the production of each film. I think you mean film making. Sorry to call you out but I really hate it when people use that word like that.

[–]Imxset21 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I meant to use "Cinematography", sorry.

[–]SARS11 -1 points0 points ago

I agree one hundred percent. And it's way more interesting when you use and actual camera and different lenses and stuff. Instead of taking a pic and putting a filter on it. Takes some skill to compose actual good photos all by yourself

[–]CoolMoD -1 points0 points ago

I don't think people have an issue with these filters, so much as being told to look at them. Nobody gets angry at people who golf, yet lack golfing skill, because they do it on the course and keep to themselves about it. These people don't ask you to watch them golf. They don't upload videos of themselves golfing poorly on facebook and fill your wall with them (well, at least my wall, I can't speak for everyone here...)

[–]MCJokeExplainer 2 points3 points ago

I think this is a more legitimate complaint, because it does impact your life. However, part of the point of art is sharing it with other people. So to a certain extent, there's not really a point in them doing what they're doing if they don't post it somewhere. And also, is it really any different than people posting their shitty cell phone pictures without a filter? At least with the filter, they're giving SOME thought to composition, lighting, etc. They're engaging with the artistic process, even if only superficially. And for my money, that's a good thing. But, like I said, I get why it's annoying. I can understand that complaint.

Protip if you're sick of it, though: On Facebook, next time you see an instagram post, go to the little drop-down menu and select "Hide all by Instagram" at the very bottom. http://i.imgur.com/3qYQH.png

[–]CoolMoD 0 points1 point ago

The difference between instagram pictures and cell phone pictures is that few people claim that their cell phone picture is art. It's "look at this thing I found" vs "look at this photo I took".

As for your suggestion, I already have, but thanks.

[–]zublits 2 points3 points ago

It's kinda like how everyone thinks they can make electronic music these days. It gives the whole artform a bad name.

[–]Vegeta_is_king_ 2 points3 points ago

Oh look.... This picture. Yet again....

[–]daemonchile 1 point2 points ago

If you declare yourself as being a photographer you are telling people that it is a big part of your life and that you have studied it and practiced it extensively. You should have a good sized portfolio of decent work. Better still, if you just do it as a hobby and then call yourself an amateur. There is no harm in that. Even then, you are still saying that you study the art of photography.

However owning a camera and taking pictures of nice things you see without really knowing what you're doing and just hoping for the best does not make you a photographer. Just as owning a football and kicking it around in the park doesn't make you a footballer.

TL;DR you ain't a photographer if you just own a camera and take pictures. It takes skills that you normally have to learn just like anything else.

[–]iplaygaem 1 point2 points ago

It's not just the hot ones.

[–]ozone_00 2 points3 points ago

To be perfectly fair, this is what actual photogs think as well.

[–]SARS11 0 points1 point ago

I use instagram..I mostly use my phone but I sometimes put photos I've taken with my actual camera

[–]JAKnighton 0 points1 point ago

Those girls are as much photographers as redditors are scientists.

[–]AzzaFaz 0 points1 point ago

you dont spend much time on /r/science do you, or /r/askscience? there are some pretty educated, and qualified people from most advanced scientific fields in there?

[–]JAKnighton 0 points1 point ago

So if /r/science makes a case for redditors being scientists, what does /r/spacedicks say about reddit?

[–]AzzaFaz 0 points1 point ago

well, with any community there are groups who associate themselves to ideology, or in this case (referring to the post) hobbies, like photography, right? so in /r/science there will be scientists / people who are interested in furthering their knowledge of the physical world, and in spacedicks (which i choose not to frequent) there are people who associate themselves to the stories/pictures/posts presented there, however questionable their intentions may be...

[–]Gingysmalls 0 points1 point ago

When I first started photography as a hobby, people were constantly referring to this episode and poking fun.

Joke's on them. I'm 17 and make $60 an hour to play with a camera.

[–]zx2654 0 points1 point ago

I'll say, it wrong scene. They were in a restaurant when Stewie said it.

[–]woozey69 0 points1 point ago

I think of this Evey time I'm on instagram, oh wait I don't have one, I know I'm not a photographer, and I'm not trying to front being one. Soooooo... I think of this every time I my friends talk about instagram.

[–]meatspun 0 points1 point ago

One drawback to expressing yourself through art is that everybody is a critic when it comes to art.

[–]idacalledyouwoodyjoe 0 points1 point ago

you might have not lost the people in this thread if you posted the entire quote instead of cutting of the end. Unfortunately everybody who posts this cuts off the end, and it DRIVES ME MAD!

[–]AzzaFaz 0 points1 point ago

am i the only one around here who picks up the xkcd reference? look on the blocks, i'm sure there is a comic about that somewhere in there?

[–]drburropile 0 points1 point ago

Are these posts just propaganda from photography schools?

I originally thought they were butthurt graduates that spent 50k$ on college, but I'm starting to think maybe the rabbit hole goes further and its the schools.

[–]eeelisabeth 0 points1 point ago

Stuff like this makes me feel bad about doing photography.

[–]necroden 0 points1 point ago

Made me think of my ex-girlfriend.

takes picture of flower, uses instagram to make it black and white, add a pink quote that revolves around love, and stuff it in the folder with all the other identical pictures

This is not photography or editing, people.

[–]steam2 0 points1 point ago

I am a professional photographer, and this annoys the fuck out of me.

[–]saucierlol 0 points1 point ago

How can I rate the level of photography of a friend of mine ?

I have this friend who has started taking pictures when she got a very expensive camera for her birthday, I am really an "unartistic" person, I have no idea of how you can determine if a photo is good or bad, and I honestly don't feel anything before the pics she shows me, but it does this to me with every kind of art and you would show me a pic from a very famous photographer, I wouldn't be moved at all. So, I cannot allow myself to tell her that she has no real talent because I don't think I can perceive talent.

Of course my goal is not to hurt her or anything, but she has gotten a bit too obsessed with that (she wants to become a photographer and all, even if she has never taken a class of photography), but I would to objectively know if she has a bit of talent or not.

What should I pay attention to in her photos ?

[–]vu0tran 0 points1 point ago

Technically, if you're take photos, you're a photography.

[–]SubtleMockery -1 points0 points ago

Man, you've got to love the amount of integrity, class, and effort that goes into every episode of Family Guy.

[–]kezza596 -1 points0 points ago

This always annoys me. I once called someone out on it and she went insane at me. She got a load of people to have a go at me on every online account of mine that she could find.

It blows my mind that people like that exist.

[–]vagrantwade -2 points-1 points ago

OP walked into a hornets nest. Reddit has it's own massive collection of photog students.
