Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Please mark spoilers like this:

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Eh. Technically speaking that can happen naturally. But most of the ones you see like this are lab grown specifically to show off these structures and whatnot. Still cool though!

It's like Escher meets Borg.

Can't pepto bizmo turn into bismuth if heated high enough?

[–]mgoflash 0 points1 point ago

Do I recall my hearing that there are no parallel lines in nature?

[–]daviator88 2 points3 points ago

Hogwash. There are several.

[–]habitats 0 points1 point ago

Like?

[–]daviator88 1 point2 points ago

Just from a standpoint of mineralogy and chemical structure, parallel lines are rampant. You have parallel lines on many, many crystals. The colloidal structure of clays alone are distributed nearly ubiquitously in planes arranged in parallel.

Personally, I think it would be pretty arrogant to believe that humanity invented parallel lines.

I was by no means questioning you, just merely looking for answers. Thanks though.

[–]daviator88 0 points1 point ago

Didn't mean to come across grumpy. Just woke up and looking to give answers. Cheers.

thats the worst part about commenting right after waking up. i noticed i always sound angry too :/

[–]mgoflash 0 points1 point ago

I really can't think of any. First I thought of rings around the out bark of palm trees where old growth is replaced by new. But those are coaxial, not parallel. By the way I'd love it if you could give me an example of some, at the least to settle the argument in my head.

[–]daviator88 0 points1 point ago

Sure thing. If you look here, you'll see many of the natural crystal systems are partially classified by how many, if any, parallel faces.

This happens to be in my field, but I'm sure other folks know of others.

[–]mgoflash 0 points1 point ago

Excellent, thank you.

[–]starrkill 0 points1 point ago

I have one of those laying around somewhere. Always thought it was neat.

[–]Candour 1 point2 points ago

Also have one on my desk. Love telling people it's radioactive (longest half-life iirc).

[–]starrkill 0 points1 point ago

I was not aware that it was radioactive. TIL.

[–]UltimateJim 0 points1 point ago

Gee thats a cool looking mineral

[–]WHATBACON 0 points1 point ago

It's the Energon Cubes

[–]heyhowru 0 points1 point ago

nausea heartburn indigestion upset stomach diarrhea...YAY, PEPTO BISMOL!

[–]heylookatmybutt 0 points1 point ago

And it gets rid of upset stomach and diarrhea

[–]thejokerxx00 0 points1 point ago

where can i get one this is so cool

[–]s0m3thingc13v3r 0 points1 point ago

How does that work? Why does the material crystallize at right angles? My knowledge of chemistry is elementary, so please explain like I'm ten, or whatever the arbitrary age is that that subreddit uses.

on each special occasion my husband puts one of these with his gift. it makes my heart skip a beat every single time. so beautiful.

[–]Natural_One 0 points1 point ago

Ive seen a nearly perfect cube of iron pyrite. Its at a college and they are quite proud of it.

bismuth is the main export of Benmark, and also their national metal.

little known fact - the committee that organized the official press release when bismuth was named Benmarks official national metal originally came up with the slogan "Benmark likes to get BIsy" which became so popular it was adopted by the tourism board.
