[–]smash14 27 points28 points ago

try waiting for the next book

[–]Recalesce 10 points11 points ago

For anyone that cares, that's close to 21 years for the final book.

At that point, we'd have to bank on him living to the age of 84.

[–]feureau 9 points10 points ago

He better be.

shakes fist

[–]theghostofme 0 points1 point ago

Cause if Martin doesn't live to 84, we'll kill him!

[–]feureau -1 points0 points ago

[–]InfernoIII -1 points0 points ago

Spoilers!

[–]superiority 2 points3 points ago

8 years for the next book... 24 total between the next and the first.

[–]BigLlamasHouse 2 points3 points ago

Someone get that old man some Nutrasweet.

[–]The_Painted_Man 4 points5 points ago

I actually did this formula for a mate of mine who shared the series for me a few years ago. Now i see it all again and what to cry.

Also, it is proof that time travel will never ever exist. Otherwise, people would have come back and warned us at the start.

[–]Elided_Ego 5 points6 points ago

I feel as if this television series continues to maintain its high popularity he's going to have additional pressure on him to finish the last 2-3 (he's said that 8 books is not out of the question) in the next 5-7 years.

[–]JesusTapdancingChris 1 point2 points ago

8 books? What is this blasphemy? I was convinced that the series would end on A Hope of Spring. What would come after? Unless he puts something in between The Winds of Winter and AHoS it would just be anti climactic...

[–]quartzar_the_king 1 point2 points ago

Why would putting one between WoW and aDoS be any less anti-climactic than having one after, as long as it's announced? I don't think it would be anti-climactic either way, as I welcome any additional ASOIAF material, but I'm just wondering.

[–]JesusTapdancingChris 0 points1 point ago

Well, considering the names, "A Hope of Spring" probably ends with a resolution concerning The Others (where The Winds of Winter is the beginning and middle of that conflict in earnest) - and that is, to me at least, the "main conflict" of the series. Just like LOTR there are several other conflicts/interests but one upon which everything else hinges.
Still, GRRM knows what he's doing, so any extra books would of course be a plus - I just think you'd have a hard time fitting in an entire book after the main conflict without being boring.
NINJAEDIT: Also, we don't want him pulling a Robert Jordan.

[–]FakingItEveryDay 1 point2 points ago

I think it's probably just going to be that the last two will be too long to fit in one book so he'll split them like he did with AFoC and ADwD.

[–]JesusTapdancingChris 0 points1 point ago

Well, true. Maybe the extra book is to accomodate the old 5-year-gap in a new place? I so hope that's the case, I want to see a useful Rickon.

[–]JesteroftheApocalyps 0 points1 point ago

Allegedly, he's told the HBO producers what's gonna happen in case he kicks the bucket. Personally, I hope Tyrion out-lives and outsmarts all and becomes undisputed King with his wife Daenerys Targaryen.

[–]Centreri 5 points6 points ago

Aaaand now I'm sad.

I don't like Maester Pycelle.

[–]TheFluxIsThis 12 points13 points ago

You're not really SUPPOSED to like him, so he's doing his job well.

[–]The_Painted_Man 8 points9 points ago

Exactly. Same with Joffrey.

[–]livevil999 11 points12 points ago

Oh god I hate him. Even the actor. Must be good then.

[–]fuzzycuffs 21 points22 points ago

He's a second rate Deckard Cain.

[–]GlItCh017 0 points1 point ago

He's the Dane Cook to Louie C.K.

[–]FloppyDonkeyDick 2 points3 points ago

Nice. Do you have the original?

[–]gcr 2 points3 points ago

[–]MoonJive -3 points-2 points ago

I do, but then again I'm the one who made it.

Before anyone asks its from Game of thrones, seriously worth a watch it's an awesome show

[–]Abyisto 40 points41 points ago

[–]The_Painted_Man 19 points20 points ago

and a horribly inadequate dietary supplement.

[–]PhiladelphiaIrish 3 points4 points ago

This also applies to the upvote gif you have been seeing on every comment thread for the past month, which will likely be the top comment here.

[–]Canadiandane 1 point2 points ago

Almost, second highest... Feels batman :/

[–]Neversaidiwassmart 0 points1 point ago

I posted a more detailed repudiation of this image (despite thinking it's actually clever) in another comment, but your comment makes me have second doubts about companies hijacking a property if it also achieves the effect of increasing awareness of the original brand. In a perfect world both companies would enter into an agreement to promote each other and jointly benefit. But in some cases it may be advantageous to an IP with little recognition in the public mind to get an awareness bump from a company hijacking their characters and story lines for some recognition.

[–]nixnaxmik -2 points-1 points ago

I especially liked how the series dealt with the crannogmen...oh wait. Well I mean I like how they remembered the the half-hand knew Jon Snow and picked him right away...err. I mean I liked how they made Asha the creepy sexual aggressor like the book did..oh wait.

[–]radda 0 points1 point ago

The Reeds are being cast for next season.

Simmer.

[–]themagicpickle 0 points1 point ago

Aren't the crannogmen going to be in the next season?

[–]odd84 -5 points-4 points ago

Is it worth the $17/month HBO costs on top of having to subscribe to cable TV?

I don't pirate, it's wrong and no show is worth $250,000 in statutory damages if prosecuted.

[–]wompemwompem 2 points3 points ago

I live in England and have no idea what you're on about

[–]odd84 0 points1 point ago

Don't worry, the damages are exactly the same since England is legally a colony of the US justice system. Just ask Richard O'Dwyer.

[–]effilctar 2 points3 points ago

Man up.

[–]boutsofbrilliance 10 points11 points ago

im fairly certain mastercard will want you to pay your debts too.

[–]shillbert 1 point2 points ago

Just one minimum payment at a time. They make a lot more off interest that way.

[–]Fluffiebunnie 1 point2 points ago

The point is that a Lannister can get credit anywhere, but the rest of us need a credit card company to guarantee our credit worthiness for those we interact with.

[–]travelinghobbit 13 points14 points ago

Seriously, no one has corrected it to Maester Card yet? ;)

edit: spelling

[–]BigLlamasHouse 2 points3 points ago

*Maester

[–]notcoolma 2 points3 points ago

dude lame joke. Now Maester Card, that would be hilar! ;)

lol jk :)

[–]nonax 14 points15 points ago

VISA is coming.

[–]riceisright56 2 points3 points ago

Except to the Iron Bank.

[–]xDRxJoKeRx 5 points6 points ago

I think Xaro Xhoan Daxos had one of these in his wallet because "he is the richest man in Qarth"

[–]Crimyote 2 points3 points ago

I've only recently begun reading the books and had never seen that character's name written yet. This whole time I thought his last name was "Ducksauce"

[–]BigLlamasHouse 1 point2 points ago

His brother is named Colonel Spicymustard. True story.

[–]ecbond 2 points3 points ago

...but using a credit card IS creating debt. So a Lannister hypothetically could also use a MasterCard, they would just pay it off every month.

[–]rockstar2012 2 points3 points ago

It could be a mastercard debt card....

[–]Fluffiebunnie 0 points1 point ago

A Lannister would not need a credit card. A Lannister would just pick up whatever he wants to buy, because the seller knows he'll pay.

[–]0RPH 2 points3 points ago

Similar to Bob Barker, a Lannister always spays his pets.

[–]rhymenoceros_ 2 points3 points ago

Humane Societies: A Lannister always spays his pets.

[–]thepasystem 1 point2 points ago

Can I get this as a Facebook cover photo??

[–]DivineRobot 1 point2 points ago

Lannisters use American Express charge cards.

[–]veiwtifuljoe 1 point2 points ago

So, for someone who doesn't pay their debts, there's Mastercard?

[–]TheFluxIsThis 1 point2 points ago

The angle and framing of this picture actually makes Dinklage look like a normal sized human being....weird.

[–]joramipsum 0 points1 point ago

Are you normal?

[–]TheFluxIsThis 0 points1 point ago

By textbook definitions. I'm not a dwarf, or a giant.

[–]joramipsum 0 points1 point ago

link to textbook definitions?

[–]TheFluxIsThis 0 points1 point ago

[–]primitive_screwhead 3 points4 points ago

Preeeeeeeety sure you have to pay off your credit card debt.

[–]RumpoleOfTheBailey 2 points3 points ago

"Pretty sure a Lannister has to pay his debts" just doesn't sound as good.

[–]jrizos 0 points1 point ago

challenge accepted.

[–]theghostofme 0 points1 point ago

That's the joke. It's implying that while the Lannisters pay their debts, no one else does.

[–]primitive_screwhead -5 points-4 points ago

Preeeeeeetty sure a lot more than "no one" are paying off their credit card debt.

[–]theghostofme -1 points0 points ago

Preeeeeeetty sure that "preeeeeeetty sure" is a preeeeeeetty passive-aggressive way of trying to prove a point.

[–]primitive_screwhead 0 points1 point ago

What's to 'prove' exactly? I got better things to do.

[–]jokes1234 3 points4 points ago

Ha, I think it is funny, how while Tyrion is saying this to the hill people and they take him at his word, at the same time Eddard Stark makes a deal to swear allegiance to the king in exchange for his life, and is subsequently beheaded, with no mention of supposed Lanister debt paying.

[–]codeexcited 8 points9 points ago

Yeah but joffrey is an idiot.

[–]handmethatkitten 2 points3 points ago

that's a good retort for an awful lot of the series thus far, i feel.

[–]Crimyote 2 points3 points ago

Yeah but Joffrey's sigil is a stag not a lion. Wink wink.

[–]IamFreid 0 points1 point ago

This made my night!

[–]MotionPropulsion 0 points1 point ago

Priceless

[–]LuXnV 0 points1 point ago

good one mastercard....good one indeed.

[–]EggdropBotnet 0 points1 point ago

I'm glad that in the last 2-3 episodes of Season 2 they stopped dropping that line 50 time an episode. WE FUCKING GET IT. Ok, Lannisters always pay there debts, I know that...

[–]moxfri 0 points1 point ago

I didn't want to upvote you, but dammit I had no choice.

[–]CosmicBard 0 points1 point ago

This makes me wonder how long it will take for companies to realize they can freely use licensed properties covertly to promote their products without paying for or achieving approval to do so just by releasing them as a "meme". Some will fail because they are blatant attempts to do this, others will succeed because they carry some comedic or contextual value. We won't know the difference. We'll just dumbly forward the link on and still rage whenever some brand we like openly promotes some company or ideology we detest or just ridicule. I don't think we'll even consciously consider it. Did anyone think about letting Peter Jackson know that some Christian group had hijacked Boromir to promote an anti-science POV (seen in a post earlier today that I have no energy to dig up and link to)? I appreciate the humor here and the creativity that came up with it, but I'm down voting because the whole concept is at the very least disrespectful of the artists who created the original IP. I fully realize that today's digital medium probably completely eliminates any artistic control of how those IP are manipulated post-release, and I have no idea if fair use applies here given the length of the use in contrast with its longevity as a meme, but it feels wrong given all of the time, care and effort that goes into building a brand in the public consciousness to begin with. With all of the tools available to the common person now, I would rather see the same message presented using OP's friends and family to communicate the concept than the unapproved and unlicensed and uncompensated use of an actor's image to (however unintentional or innocent) increase an unrelated brand's awareness in the public mind.

Edit:

TL;DR: memes open a back door for companies to use IP for unlicensed advertising.

It isn't funny, it feels more like I'm watching a commercial trying to be clever. As a matter of fact, I'm almost sure this was put here by a marketing department.

[–]Honestybomb -1 points0 points ago

I find this while wondering currently where the fuck my own credit card is after having lost it drinking last night. Not at the bar, not in my pants, so far not anywhere in my room.

Begrudging upvote. :|

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

I now have the sudden urge to get a Master Card. . .

[–]323K13L -4 points-3 points ago

Does anybody else wanna make a credit card with the Lannister seal on it now?
