I got to do this as an elementary school student, and it's something I'll never forget. I didn't believe him at first when the janitor told me we were doing a fire drill and I could pull the alarm, but when I was finally convinced, sweet sweet joy.

Imagine you notice the building burning down, so you run for the fire alarm and pull it, suddenly you're blinded by ink and are left behind to burn. What a true hero.

[–]jumpingbeaner 9 points10 points ago

Rest in peace Mr. Miller :(

[–]Admiralolz 2 points3 points ago

In some places where false alarms happen often, the handle might be treated with ink or some kind of powder. So always be careful when you're trying to get out of school.

[–]RavarSC 3 points4 points ago

always wear gloves just in case

[–]StayPuffGoomba 2 points3 points ago

I wanna say back when I was in school we had a rash of false alarms, and they caught who it was because of the ink. Either Im remembering wrong, or Im still angry about ink THAT DOESNT COME OFF EVER!

[–]elbeerock 2 points3 points ago

There are some models of pull stations that do this. Most don't.

[–]Why_Cheesoid_Exist 0 points1 point ago

This would have been in the late '80s. We didn't have ink back then.

[–]tacojohn48 37 points38 points ago

Last summer I was working at Capital One and we had a fire drill, took like 20 minutes to clear all the buildings. One day they bought ice cream for everyone and when the truck showed up the buildings all emptied in like 5 minutes.

[–]frozen-cactus 14 points15 points ago

Well fire drills you have to walk orderly or whatever. But ice cream that's everybody for themselves.

[–]swazy 1 point2 points ago

also can not use the lifts

[–]tacojohn48 0 points1 point ago

All the buildings at this campus are 4 stories tall, so that's not a major factor.

[–]BenaBena 0 points1 point ago

Were you at the Richmond site?

[–]tacojohn48 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I was at the West Creek campus.

[–]swazy 0 points1 point ago

Ok I just have bad memory's of the 4 test + all the false alarms a year we had when I was in the 14th floor.

[–]SomeAwesomeDudeGuy 2 points3 points ago

Your telling me you don't value ice cream greater than your own life? I just don't believe that.

[–]Hellstruelight 1 point2 points ago

who's telling?

[–]twistedfork 0 points1 point ago

Its because with icecream all the fatties waited for the elevator so the people that were stuck behind them in the fire drill could quickly get out of the building.

We had a fire drill at my 12 above ground 2 below ground building and it became painfully aware that many less than fully abled people slowed the flow of traffic substantially in the stairwells.

[–]fartandburp 15 points16 points ago

I was student teaching 3 years ago when I burned a bag of popcorn during a break. Smoke poured out of the room and cause the fire alarms to go off. Two fire trucks ended up coming sirens blaring asking what the problem was. I had to explain to them that I burned a bag of popcorn. All the teachers I taught with and all the kids I taught thanked me for the half hour break in their boring classes. Oh, and it smelled like burned popcorn for a week in that hallway.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

I left a battery charger on a battery in our auto shop and the battery ended up melting, leaking acid, and smoking. No alarms went off (I left it on overnight), but the entire school smelled like rotten eggs for a few days with every window in the school open.

[–]Wwallace7287 1 point2 points ago

This happened to a friend of mine about 3 weeks ago. Same instance, burnt popcorn.

[–]Mzsickness 0 points1 point ago

How long did you leave it in there? Damn man...

[–]fartandburp 1 point2 points ago

I pushed the popcorn button... so around 2 minutes? And I'm a girl :)

[–]Mzsickness 0 points1 point ago

Ahh, well that's not to bad. I've heard stories about people putting hotdogs in the microwave for 1 minute and accidentally putting 10minutes in and walking away and forgetting. Shit gets real, real fast. Sorry I thought you were a man since your name, easy mistake.

[–]fartandburp 0 points1 point ago

No worries! That's why I chose the name; so I could blend in when I want to :P

[–]txgirl09 17 points18 points ago

OP, was it everything you'd hoped it would be?

[–]buildingwithclay[S] 46 points47 points ago

Close. There's a delay between the time the lever is pulled and the alarm actually going off. I felt Hollywood had lied to me. Once it sounded, though, it felt like this.

[–]tamakun808 14 points15 points ago

Having a delay tells me that you actually have a decent fire alarm system that runs on low voltage with battery backup. Congratulations!

[–]buildingwithclay[S] 4 points5 points ago

I did not know that. How can you tell? I obviously don't know a whole lot about these things, so if there's no simple way to explain it, don't worry about it.

[–]hexapodium 11 points12 points ago

The alarm system triggers on low voltage on the control line (each sounder has its' own battery power, which is normally recharged by the control line power as well). When the alarm goes off, the control unit cuts power to the control line (which is normally kept on), and all the sounder units are designed so that they leak a little bit of voltage to ground all the time.

The control line is long, so it has a little bit of capacitance, and the sounders are designed to not leak that much voltage (because otherwise you'd have to put quite a lot of current into the control line, which is a pain for lots of reasons). As a result, it takes a little while for enough voltage to leak out across the sounders, that the sounders go "oh the voltage is low" and start ringing.

If it was trigger-high, the sounders would go off instantly as soon as the trigger signal was sent: the control unit pumps lots of juice in when the line is turned on, so the voltage on the line goes up very quickly.

[–]buildingwithclay[S] 7 points8 points ago

Thanks for the info!

[–]elbeerock 1 point2 points ago

Hey hey hey NEC knowledge! I likes

[–]hexapodium 0 points1 point ago

haha, A-level (junior + senior year HS if you're an American) electronics plus a bit of common sense.

[–]WisconsinWombat 1 point2 points ago

[–]Indestructavincible 0 points1 point ago

So your business is catching fire?

[–]didoty 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, that's what I got from it to

[–]fartandburp 5 points6 points ago

I feel like you're an awesome teacher.

[–]buildingwithclay[S] 21 points22 points ago

Haha, thanks. Believe it or not, most teachers I know (even the stuffy or strict ones) have fun personalities. We just have "professional personas" that we use in school. I'm 28 and a total kid at heart. I may just be immature, but I've always felt that growing up just means learning how to act in public.

[–]fartandburp 14 points15 points ago

Me too. I student taught a few years ago and there was a kid who farted in class (I was just observing at this point) and I was laughing so hard I was crying. The teacher didn't think it was that funny and said so out loud and 3 kids pointed out that I was laughing so hard I was crying. I don't think the teacher appreciated that.

[–]viepro 1 point2 points ago

From your name I'm going to guess you like farts more then most people

[–]fartandburp 0 points1 point ago

I'm surprised you're the only person to catch onto that!

[–]bolt289 0 points1 point ago

Out of interest, what do you teach?

[–]buildingwithclay[S] 0 points1 point ago

First grade. It's fun, challenging, and totally rewarding to see all the growth that occurs at that age. Most of the kids are just beginng to read when they start the year and leave reading fluently and are beginning to truly think critically. I could go on and on, but I won't bore you any further.

[–]bolt289 0 points1 point ago

Thinking back to the teacher I had then... you sound so much more fun! I can completely see why you'd feel that and it's not boring at all - that's why I asked - thank you! :)

[–]4vradrmr -2 points-1 points ago

Werd.

[–]werdnaman1993 -1 points0 points ago

Awesome. Glad to hear it. :D

[–]CerpinTaxes 3 points4 points ago

[–]breezington13 0 points1 point ago

fuckin' awesome name, man. Great album

[–]TheDoBoy 0 points1 point ago

i was waiting for someone to mention the mars volta. such an awesome band

[–]Paulus81 5 points6 points ago

Fat Jonah Hill is so much better than the skinny one.

[–]plan_b_ability 4 points5 points ago

Was told to do it at work last year. I kept asking, "Really? Are you sure?" I'm in my late 20's and was still nervous about pulling it.

[–]farmekat000 1 point2 points ago

About a year ago I was at a volleyball tournament and my friends and I where standing by a fire alarm. It was a newer one with a lid over the alarm. Needless to say I opens the top lid. All the sudden what seemed like the loudest alarm in the world was blaring in my ears! I almost had a heart attack! TIL: Do not open the Lids covering fire alarms !...... Unless there really is a fire.

[–]Bellum19 1 point2 points ago

What was it like?

[–]patient1 1 point2 points ago

Man, in eighth grade I got in trouble for allegedly pulling the fire alarm. There was 3 of us hovering around on while we waited for first period to start, Friend A and I were joking around with Friend B, when Friend B decided that it would be funny if he pulled the damn thing. We had a half second that felt like an hour as we all looked at each other in total shock. So then we bolt, but because my fat ass was easy to pick out in a crowd, I was snatched first. They also caught friend A because he was so tall. Seems like we weren't able to blend at all. Friend B on the other hand was "normal" so he was gone in a flash. After all was said and done, and 2 hours in the principals office, turns out we'd have to pay a $50 dollar fine, each. To make matters worse, it was the end of the school year, so everyone was preparing to go to a waterpark, and we were no longer able to go. I was looking forward to that damn trip for 2 weeks, especially after befriending some fine females. I wish instead of the torture I got, it was a mystical prize lever. Would have haunted me less.

[–]permareddit 2 points3 points ago

That fine is SUCH bs... Assholes probably wanted a nice new coffee maker or something .. But yeah shame on them seriously

[–]BRayne7 0 points1 point ago

Fire department probably fined the school for the false alarm. That's what happens in my area at least.

[–]mwmwmwmwmmdw 1 point2 points ago

i used to be scared shit less of fire drills and so to help alleviate the fear the principle would come get me from class and have me pull it i did not know it was such a treat for everyone else

[–]Trufflesaurus 1 point2 points ago

When I was in High school I had a teacher freak out at the class for some small thing. She ran out of the class room screaming and 15 seconds later the fire alarms went off. Everyone in class thought it was real and it took some serious convincing to get us to believe that it was staged

[–]sjw87 1 point2 points ago

I am on reddit at 3am because someone pullled the fire alarm in my apartment complex.

[–]lYossarian 1 point2 points ago

I would have yelled, "We got one!" like Janine in Ghostbusters.

[–]crazyguns 1 point2 points ago

Dammit, I was hoping you responded by starting an actual fire...!

[–]benTheRobot 1 point2 points ago

[–]CxMxB 1 point2 points ago

that freaked me the fuck out when I clicked the glasses. After I realized what it was I laughed so god damn hard.

[–]King_Yeshua 1 point2 points ago

the fact that you posted the picture about yourself...

[–]Beefcakeawesum 0 points1 point ago

I am security gaurd at a hospital and get to conduct the drill of couple months, have to time the staff on how fast they arrive with fire extinguishers before i can turn off the alarm.

[–]OWSmoker 0 points1 point ago

i literally just watched this movie 5 mins before seeing this

[–]Not_Good_With_Words 0 points1 point ago

"Just pull the damn thing already"

[–]DishonestBystander 0 points1 point ago

Once I saw the "School Resource Officer" (read: rent-a-cop) put a key into the alarm housing and turn the alarm on. I was disappointed they didn't actually pull the alarm for the drills. Hence, I suspect OP's legitimacy.

[–]valen089 1 point2 points ago

I had to pull fire alarms for a drill at my work. The key is used for turning them off though.

Also it can depend on the system. Some of our old buildings can only be turned off from a single panel in the basement.

[–]buildingwithclay[S] 1 point2 points ago

Different systems would be the cause of your suspicion, I think. They're actually pulled in my building, and it's awesome.

[–]DishonestBystander 0 points1 point ago

I'm jelly.

[–]neckfacedkilla 0 points1 point ago

you sang the mars volta?

[–]1InchofPleasure 0 points1 point ago

I read this as "...was asked to pull a firearm for a drill today."

[–]Brif 0 points1 point ago

On my last week of 7th grade, there were at least half a dozen fire alarms pulled every day.

[–]HectorAnonymous 0 points1 point ago

I used to coordinate fire drills for the safety program at my job. I loved telling people they could actually pull the alarm. The looks were priceless. Also, everybody said "wait, like, for real? Really?" Priceless.

[–]fawker 0 points1 point ago

I came here expecting Dwight's fire drill from The Office. I'm very disappointed in the lot of you.

[–]deadfire55 0 points1 point ago

At university dorm, very last day before everyone goes home, 3AM, come out of room (end of hallway), gray smoke pouring out of stairwell, first one to know, flip the shit out, start yelling, going ape shit on every door, someone eventually pulls the alarm, everyone gets out fine but to this day I regret not having even passed a thought about pulling the fire alarm.

tl;dr I'm an idiot.

[–]super_soprano13 0 points1 point ago

I just graduated with a music ed degree and came here to say I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS DAY. both because I mean...well...duh, pulling the fire alarm, and also because then I'll know when that awful sound is going to happen. My ears ring for hours afterwards and I can't hear straight.

[–]gunju11 0 points1 point ago

we arnt allowed so because it automattically calls the fire department. So when we have it they say it over the P.A system. Our Earthquake drillsare even worse,Someone crinkling paper over the P.A system.

[–]Silverwave2 -2 points-1 points ago

They don't pull the alarm for fire drills. The alarm handle releases ink when pulled and send a message to the nearby fire station. The drill is started in my main office automatically through the intercom panel.

[–]sgtcjl 3 points4 points ago

Depends on the school. At my school, it's actually the fire department that does it.

[–]pogo101650 3 points4 points ago

one time they did that at my school but forgot to actually tell the school they were doing it... was an interesting day xD

[–]Silverwave2 0 points1 point ago

I see well your not the only one who has a different procedure at your school so It all depends really.

[–]buildingwithclay[S] 2 points3 points ago

That may be how it's done at your school, but not at mine. I work in an elementary school. The alarms are pulled (I happened to be in the office for a PPT at the time, and my principal knows me all too well) and no ink is released. Alarm systems and procedure are different from district to district - in fact, she (the principal) made a joke about the phantom ink the nuns in her high school always warned the students about.

[–]Silverwave2 0 points1 point ago

Haha ok i was referring to the high school i went to because once a freshman pulled the fire alarm as a joke and got sprayed with ink and as he was running away he was shouting " I did it, I pulled the alarm." So he got caught and arrested and I'm pretty sure he was crying. That was the best way to end my senior year.

[–]HoshPoshMosh -1 points0 points ago

That 'ink release' thing is bullshit, just to let you know. I guess it depends on the type of alarm, but it wasn't like that where I went.

[–]Silverwave2 0 points1 point ago

Well it happened at my high school so thats why i said it. BUt your probably right it must depend on the alarm system.

[–]cheesinator -1 points0 points ago

Fuck you guys and your stories about pulling the fire alarms at your offices.

[–]SensibleRedditor -1 points0 points ago

Fire drill coordinator: Alright everyone, each of you will have a crucial job should a fire occur to rescue the kids and get them to safety. LET'S DO THIS!

OP: Yurr, what do I do though?

FDC: OP, we kinda assumed you've already died in the fire. Just, uhh, pull the lever. Everyone else, save kids!

[–]chernickov -2 points-1 points ago

The Mars Volta does sound a lot like a fire alarm.
