Every time this photo is posted I like to think that the woman dedicated her entire life to helping foster kids, as she was raised by foster parents when she was young. Over her life, she helped hundreds of children succeed in life. She worked tirelessly at her job and then came home to a house full of little ones. She never got a second to herself, but she loved all of her kids. Finally, as the kids were grown, they all pitched in to buy mom the trip around the world she always wanted. Instead of traveling with her, they gave her the space she always wanted. She takes the photos like that to send back to her kids to show them how grateful she is for the trip.

Forever alone? No.

Finally alone? Yes.

Traveling alone is one of the best ways to travel. It's not for everybody, but if you can manage the lonely stretches, there's nothing quite like it. For one, you are completely taken out of your environment, and you lack the crutch of a friend or an SO to lean on. You are forced to absorb more things around you. You are also more likely to meet locals if you don't rely on a companion for entertainment. And lastly, sometimes it's really nice to be alone. And there's no alone like being alone in a fat away place that you don't know. It's like a more entertaining isolation tank.

I did a home stay in Japan a couple years ago and this strategy for taking pictures was completely normal. I thought it was bizarre at first, but my home stay father insisted; the whole family can fit in a photo, and if you angle it right the perfect background is displayed.

To me this is such a depressing photo.

Picture her, a mother of 3 kids, husband passed away. She wants to move on with her life and explore (something she never got to do when she was tied down raising her children).

But, all her kids are now either in college or busy working full time. So she must be a tourist by herself in all her Asian tourist motherly clothes and style. Yet she still manages to take pictures that she can send to her kids and friends where she has been using a pretty nifty though socially embarrassing method.

Makes me sad and think of my mother. I don't want her to be like this

The whole thing just doesn't make sense. Why would someone truly 'forever alone' bother to make pictures of herself? You'd be taking pictures of everything around you but yourself. You take pictures of yourself to show them to others to make them see you were there.
