To Steve Carell: "your character on Despicable Me, I hear that they were gonna base the nose of the character on your nose, but decided to go for something less cartoonish."

[–]ThatKositzkeKid 610 points611 points ago

One of my favorite jokes by him: "So I like to use Axe body spray... But I live in a black neighborhood, so it's really 'Ask body spray'."

[–]devils0508 426 points427 points ago

"if you don't get this joke you're not racist enough"

[–]Chicken-n-Waffles 114 points115 points ago

Got nothing to do with being racist. It's a cultural observation.

[–]Swampf0x 65 points66 points ago

devils0508's is quoting what ZG says after the Axe bit.

[–]SethIsInSchool 42 points43 points ago

"Have you seen the lifetime movie about that woman?"

[–]Fazaman 22 points23 points ago

You mean the really emotional one?

[–]necrosxiaoban 9 points10 points ago

The one murdered by her husband? Yeah.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]parc 11 points12 points ago

This is lifetime. Being killed is the obstacle.

[–]Thydamine 1 point2 points ago

It's like that episode of Seinfeld where George tells a lie and gets so caught up in it that he ends up in worse trouble.

[–]Kinbensha 248 points249 points ago

Linguist here. It's also a linguistic observation.

The phonological process being discussed here is called metathesis. And no, it quite well could be racist. Why? Because in AAVE (African American Vernacular English), "ask" is pronounced [æks] but "axe" is not pronounced *[æsk]. Both "ask" and "axe" are homophonous.

So, the assumption/joke that they're switched, when they're not, is not based on an observation. It's based on an attempt to poke fun at a linguistic characteristic of a minority dialect.

Is that ok? In my opinion, of course. We should all be able to joke about our dialects, because we all have them. There is no such thing as "no dialect." The problem arises when some people think that their dialect is somehow better than another's, despite all the linguistic evidence being to the contrary.

[–][deleted] 43 points44 points ago

I like you.

[–]DiggV4Sucks 145 points146 points ago

Don't be shy. Axe him out.

[–]Poltras 44 points45 points ago

Someone told me that once. I'm now an ask murderer :(

[–]ernesthelp 16 points17 points ago

[–]Feltron 9 points10 points ago

This is the first time I didnt laugh at this, I used to laugh at this picture every time without fail, then some ass hat thought it would be funny to make it a meme and beat it to death...I dont know what my life has become.

[–]DrEmilioLazardo 2 points3 points ago

That dog is still cute as a button. Look at that little rascal. Hard not to like that smarmy little son of a bitch.

[–]gruhfuss 1 point2 points ago

my life is cabbage.

[–]gluino 5 points6 points ago

Are there any other examples of this besides ask/axe? Got any youtube evidence that black people say it like that?

[–]Apostropartheid 5 points6 points ago

Two common ones are comfortable (comfterble) and nuclear (nucular).

[–]DiggV4Sucks 7 points8 points ago

Well, now I guess George W. Bush and I finally have something in common. We're both black.

[–]yellowdyenumber5 1 point2 points ago

Would Laboratory (labratory) and Library (lieberry) be considered some also?

[–]septchouettes 1 point2 points ago

All I can think about is amberlamps.

[–]Kinbensha 5 points6 points ago

Apostropartheid is right. Comfortable and nuclear often undergo metathesis in American English depending on dialect, level of formality, etc. Another common one is interesting as "intresting."

Metathesis has also played a major role in language change diachronically. Check out the Wikipedia page if you want to see more examples.

That black people say what like what? Are you asking about other phonological processes in AAVE? Just look at the AAVE page of Wikipedia or check out your local university library for tons of information on it. AAVE is the most widely studied minority dialect of English.

[–]touchmybelly 1 point2 points ago

Interesting to intresting isn't metathesis, it's syncopy. I believe the other two changes you are referring to are as well but you havn't given the variations so I can't tell.

[–]iammolotov 1 point2 points ago

Got any youtube evidence that black people say it like that?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess you're white?

[–]Catsfosho 2 points3 points ago

Actually AAVE would stand for "African American Vernacular English..

[–]al343806 1 point2 points ago

As a linguist, can you explain this? I live in a majority African American neighborhood and cannot figure out why the pronunciation is as such.

[–]Kinbensha 1 point2 points ago

It just is. Metathesis is often lacking phonetic motivation. There are many other phonological processes that can be explained phonetically, but often metathesis is just a case of, "this is how it's said here." When did it break off from Standard American/Southern American? I don't know. Maybe it has been around since the original African slaves began to acquire English in the US. Or maybe originally they said [æsk] and it metathesized later.

[–]iGotChubs4You[!] 1 point2 points ago

You must get all the ladies.

[–]thatwasntababyruth 1 point2 points ago

Homophonous is the most awkward wording since the phrase "awkward wording".

[–]Tim_Kaiser 1 point2 points ago

Sociolinguist here. I can confirm everything he says. I would like to add to it, though, that in some regions the /æks/ pronunciation of "ask" is being integrated into the colloquial speech of most people and can no longer be associated solely with AAVE anymore.

However, that joke is still racist, again for the reasons Kinbensha said.

[–]doyu 5 points6 points ago

Not sure if your username is relevant or offensive... :p

[–]Chicken-n-Waffles 1 point2 points ago

Tasty.

[–]asianinthemix00 1 point2 points ago

Chili and donuts isn't the way to go?

[–]Chicken-n-Waffles 1 point2 points ago

Only if wearing alligator shoes.

[–]Funski33 1 point2 points ago

So says Mr. Chicken & Waffles.

[–]dirtmouth 1 point2 points ago

he actually says that during the performance.

[–]BootWizard 1 point2 points ago

Says chicken-n-waffles

[–]stillalone 1 point2 points ago

I bet that's what all the racists say.

[–]Doctor-Acula 40 points41 points ago

Axe Me Anything request: Zach Galifianaskis

[–]massenburger 2 points3 points ago

I third this request (since I'm assuming the rest of reddit seconds it).

[–]dickdrizzle 1 point2 points ago

Zach Galifianaskisberg.

[–]kratistos 45 points46 points ago

I don't get it.

Edit: I get it.

[–]AMostOriginalUserNam 19 points20 points ago

Oh I remember this comment from that thread the other day. It got 2000 or so upvotes.

I guess this is what they call a cheap knock off.

[–]jagedlion 1 point2 points ago

If it counts for anything, going from ascian to axian or acsian happened a long time ago, way before new world black neighborhoods existed. (indeed, before the word 'ask' existed)

http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=19991216

[–]Vectoor 6 points7 points ago

Congratulations, you are not racist.

[–]acog 7 points8 points ago

Honest question: what makes it racist to observe that using "axe" for "ask" is extremely common among American black people?

[–]albequirky 5 points6 points ago

It isn't racist. Most people have no idea what that word even means and just throw it around every time race is mentioned.

[–]LaMoose -1 points0 points ago

You don't speak jive? Video for the lazy.

Edit:?

[–]Grullok 2 points3 points ago

Supposedly when people in ghetto neighborhoods say "ask" it sounds like "axe".

[–]Enjoiissweet 36 points37 points ago

Not supposedly, it's true.

Yo maaan, can i axe you a question?

[–]nvisible 9 points10 points ago

Phonetically:

"Main let me axe you a question."

Mississippi Delta version.

[–]Enjoiissweet 2 points3 points ago

Haven't heard the Mississippi version.

[–]fr33state 8 points9 points ago

And in the year 3000, like on Futurama.

Bender: "Ooh, ooh- I wanna axe it a question. As a robot living among humans I've never really felt accepted at parties or nude beaches. So, I've always secretly wondered: What if I was 500ft tall?"

http://www.gotfuturama.com/Multimedia/EpisodeSounds/2ACV16/

[–]MrPeel11 0 points1 point ago

Scuze mee, can I axe you a quewestionnn

[–]rsmoling 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but he wasn't the first to use that. Years ago, a minor headline (without an actual article) in The Onion was "Minority Neighborhood Terrorized by Ask Murderer". (Or something extremely close to that.)

[–]uiouyug 0 points1 point ago

that's turrible

[–]AntonJokinen 147 points148 points ago

Looks at her dog and says "I have a bigger dick than that."

[–]beetnemesis 165 points166 points ago

It's not. He has much funnier lines.

[–]Kramol 26 points27 points ago

[–]daedalus1982 82 points83 points ago

With regards to his own hygiene and trademark unkempt look. (paraphrased because I can't be bothered)

  • When you look like I do, it's hard to get a table for one at Chuck E. Cheeses.

  • I went to my stylist and told her I wanted the "amber alert"

[–]DomesticatedCreeper 5 points6 points ago

Give me the ol' Sea Captain.

That one. That was the ha.

[–]6i9 4 points5 points ago

Just give me marijuana Santa Claus

[–]joliver321 97 points98 points ago

How about "When you go to the beach, everyone panics and yells 'SHARK! SHARK.... oh wait, it's just Steve Carrell doing the backstroke.'"

[–]coelfrier 9 points10 points ago

[–]rajto 26 points27 points ago

I don't wanna be that guy, but isn't that joke old as hell? I'm not even from US and that line is commonly used to mock people with big noses over here.

[–]joliver321 46 points47 points ago

I guess this applies. I hadn't ever heard it before watching it in that video.

[–]KyleChief 18 points19 points ago

I thought it was saying Steve Carrel swims around with an erection.

[–]RDandersen 3 points4 points ago

What makes it particularly funny is not the joke, but that he says it to Steve Carrell's face on his "talkshow."

[–]creepyeyes 2 points3 points ago

Right, the joke here isn't the joke itself but the fact that he says it to Steve Carrell after he almost cries from Steve insulting him

[–]Anonymo 4 points5 points ago

[–]tdrules 38 points39 points ago

Zach Galifianakis Live at the Purple Onion.

That is all.

[–]Detry 12 points13 points ago

Here is part 1, part 2, part 3, and part 4.

[–]I_am_ME_ama 6 points7 points ago

This stand up had me in tears. Would definitely recommend .

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I agree, I think Zach is hilarious but this is one of the few jokes I didn't laugh at.

[–]SweetNeo85 4 points5 points ago

And much finer moments.

[–]TrindadeDisciple 20 points21 points ago

What are all of these from?

[–]lvnshm 37 points38 points ago

Between Two Ferns on funnyordie. Sorry. I'd link but in on my phone. Just dot com what I said.

[–]mrpopperspenguin 30 points31 points ago

Here you go... I recommend the one with Steve Carell.

[–]TysonStoleMyPanties 48 points49 points ago

The Bruce Willis one is another great one.

"How many kids do you have?... 3... Which is your favorite? Ashton?"

[–]nice1111 53 points54 points ago

Bruce: "What are you talking about?" Zach: "What are you talking about, Willis?"

[–]Detry 4 points5 points ago

All of them are worth a watch.

[–]C4p0tts 7 points8 points ago

^ plus the one with bradley cooper.... too hilarious

[–]theonlyalterego 2 points3 points ago

that's one of my favorites, just for the very end.

[–]kikenazz 2 points3 points ago

I forgot my keys. That was like three months ago

[–]steady_riot 1 point2 points ago

Two years, actually.

[–]Hiding_in_the_Shower 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, where?

[–]Se7en_Sinner 348 points349 points ago

[–]CiscoEnt 14 points15 points ago

I haven't seen this before, and awkwardly laughed out loud in my cubicle. I really need to work harder at pretending to work.

[–]brandonw00 33 points34 points ago

Go watch Live at the Purple Onion. It is his stand up special on Netflix. Absolutely amazing.

[–]mrPitPat 35 points36 points ago

Sometimes I'll do something and I'll think to myself, that is so Raven ...

[–]brandonw00 46 points47 points ago

Last night I got so drunk I blac...sorry, I African-Americaned out.

[–]davidrobots 13 points14 points ago

I rented The Importance of Being Earnest they other day. I'm surprised they made another Ernest movie.

[–]Yakdaddy 4 points5 points ago

My girlfriend's job separates their employees into teams. She is on Team Raven. The other day somebody on her team screwed up, and I told her "That was not very Raven." She did not get it. True story!

[–]jordanminjie 1 point2 points ago

Other times I'll do something and I'll be like, "That was not very Raven."

[–]ironically_hip 12 points13 points ago

Nothing makes me laugh harder than when he finishes his beer and tries to get the waiter's attention for another.

[–]brandonw00 8 points9 points ago

That, or the mental breakdowns he has while he is sitting at the piano. Oh man it is so good.

[–]trueblueskies 5 points6 points ago

"I ALMOST HAD KANGAROO JACK! THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN MY TICKET OUT!"

[–]brandonw00 7 points8 points ago

Why are you guys here? Oh, did you see me in Out Cold?

[–]trueblueskies 3 points4 points ago

When he said that, I lost it. I actually sort of loved that movie... Though I haven't seen it in a long time.

[–]anibeav 2 points3 points ago

Can I get a capri-sun and gin? A sunny-D and vodka?

[–]traumazulu 1 point2 points ago

"My girlfriend looks a little like Charlize Theron and a lot like Patrick Ewing." In the Between Two Ferns with Charlize Theron he uses a similar line: "My girlfriend looks a little like you and a lot like Dog the Bounty Hunter." http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/d14fdef4f2/between-two-ferns-with-zach-galifianakis

[–]SuperTurtle 1 point2 points ago

Psst, guys! It's also on youtube, but don't let netflix know I told you!

[–]tehverdikt 1 point2 points ago

Aww man, it kinda killed it for me when I realised it was all staged :(

[–]ungulate 69 points70 points ago

No. His finest moment was lighting up a joint on Bill Maher, during a debate on marijuana.

[–]dearastronomer 23 points24 points ago

wasn't a real joint.

[–]DoctorRoxxo 17 points18 points ago

Neither is the show sadly, it's all staged :(

[–]crookedparadigm 29 points30 points ago

Most of Bill's comments may be pre-written (given how he never changes his tune on anything...), but I find it hard to believe that people like Cornell West and Paul Krugman would read a script for the sake of a staged debate.

[–]WilsonHanks 1 point2 points ago

Those lines in the beginning are scripted and aren't always his, but the actual debates aren't.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]philolsophy 1 point2 points ago

what show isn't?

[–]Tokiehardo 2 points3 points ago

Any show that doesn't take place on a stage.

[–]OneRomaines 4 points5 points ago

Source?

[–]OneRomaines 2 points3 points ago

Pulling a joint and lighter from his coat pocket, Galifianakis fired up and started puffing, pausing to allow conservative reporter and fellow guest Margaret Hoover to sniff the joint, confirming it was the real thing.

Again, source?

[–]pr1ntscreen 1 point2 points ago

That's just the clip

[–]jpdemers 1 point2 points ago

Judging from the reaction of the anchorwoman's face, she was thinking "This is good shit!!"

[–]perogies 41 points42 points ago

I love the almost innocent expression she has. She's just so goddamn hot.

[–]hooliganking 24 points25 points ago

That's the look of disapproval! ಠ_ಠ

[–]athrix 11 points12 points ago

I see that face often :(

[–]ntrpik 3 points4 points ago

i always thought she looked incredible in this video.

[–]CUNTBERT_RAPINGTON 18 points19 points ago

Someone should take this two-panel and use it to make a motion picture version with audio!

[–]Styvorama 7 points8 points ago

You young folk and your newfangled talkies

[–]bakdom146 1 point2 points ago

Someone should take this comment and repost it on every single post containing screenshots of video with text superimposed over it!

[–]awFirestarter 3 points4 points ago

[–]Bout_It_Bout_It 20 points21 points ago

As a non american, i'm going to have to plead bafflement here. I am not denigrating anyone's sense of humour or anything, but i find it so incredible that people think this guy is hilarious.

And it is not like i hate him - i actually like his presence in movies. He has the John Belushi air of anarchy about him. But i have never laughed at anything he has done/said. It is fascinating how humour differs.

[–]GrokMonkey 6 points7 points ago

Have you seen any of his stand-up?

[–]ramp_tram 37 points38 points ago

UNLESS A MAN IS WEARING A DRESS AND RUNNING IN AND OUT OF DOORS IN A HALLWAY WHILE BEING CHASED BY A BOBBY IT'S SIMPLY NOT FUNNY.

[–]Slaeke 7 points8 points ago

bwheebwheewhippledippledipdopdip

[–]ddb1 1 point2 points ago

Quite!

[–]laverns 2 points3 points ago

Well, who do you prefer?

[–]swohio 2 points3 points ago

While he has the rare funny moment, I'd say he is mediocre at best (just my opinion.) I grew up watching stand up comedians all my life. There is a very wide range that I enjoy from Bill Burr to Kat Williams to George Carlin to Gabriel Iglesias. I'm not attached to any one particular style of comedy and that goes for movies as well. That being said, Mr Galifianakis is mostly disappointing in any performance I see him in. In his stand up or movies it seems that there are consistently great setups to a joke but a great punch line is never delivered.

Again, this is just my opinion. I do share your bafflement at the fact that so many people thought that The Hangover was so incredibly funny (I think I cracked a smile maybe a few times.) Just letting you know that being American doesn't necessarily make him seem funnier.

[–]Unwanted_opinion 1 point2 points ago

This is the way comedy has always been, tons of people find that the blue collar guys are hilarious. I personally don't find them even mildly amusing.

From your list I think Bill Burr has some funny stuff in his standup specials, I never liked Kat Williams style. George Carlin I love. Gabriel Iglesias I don't find funny.

My favorite standup comedians are Louis C.K., George Carlin, Mitch Hedburg and Daniel Tosh. Those are the only comedians I'm constantly laughing the entire special. Then I have a bunch of comedians that I think are worth watching but the jokes are more hit and miss. Like Zach Galifinakis, Jim Gaffigan, Bill Burr... etc.

So yes humor is extremely different to different people, some people like dark humor. Some people love puns, some people just prefer cheap laughs at other people's expense. I'd say I enjoy most types of humor as long as the buildup to the punchline is done well.

[–]swohio 1 point2 points ago

Your favorites definitely rank among mine, I was just pointing out that I can enjoy many different styles in case someone was to suggest my dislike of Galifianakis was the narrow scope of comedy some people have. Point being, if it's well written and executed I enjoy it.

Side note, Bill Burr has been hit or miss for me for most of his acts too but if you haven't seen his "Let It Go" special, I highly recommend it. It's on netflix streaming last I checked.

[–]Silence_Dobad 1 point2 points ago

I understand where you're coming from. Watch this and you might appreciate more his ability as an actor and comedian:

Going deep with KassemG is way better. Same thing but the interviewers are pornstars.

That's awkward.

[–]TrolleyPower 3 points4 points ago

They're both pretty funny.

[–]palordrolap 2 points3 points ago

Was her response "Are you like a crazy person?" in a really bad approximant accent?

[–]TheUsher 2 points3 points ago

I've always enjoyed the Charlize Theron interview the most. It's hysterical when she flirts with him, and then the cascade of insults, followed by "I hope your dog dies".

[–]HEINOUS_ANUS_COOKIES 1 point2 points ago

"The image of me, naked, in a pool with a fat garden gnome... You're good! You're good!"

[–]ThatBaldAtheist 1 point2 points ago

That's definitely my favorite one as well. Link for those who want to watch it.

[–]Plastastic 2 points3 points ago

"Did you know that some actors turn down roles?"

[–]GeorgeForemanGrillz 2 points3 points ago

His twin brother Seth is just as funny.

[–]GeorgeForemanGrillz 1 point2 points ago

Zach is absolutely hilarious. Even his old stuff is great.

No, watch the "Between the Ferns" episode with Charlize Theron, it is pure comedy gold from start to finish. Do it.

The between two ferns bits are written by scott aukerman and bj porter, you should probably be thanking hot saucerman for this.

Not to ruin the fun for anyone, but these videos are mostly scripted and written. This peticular joke seems like Scott Aukerman wrote it

I heard somewhere that Between Two Ferns is going to be becoming a show on TV. Can someone prove/disprove this claim?

It' not really his finest moment. You're just saying it is because he said vagina.

... that's his finest moment? Doesn't that make him rather shitty?

Just had to throw a little Puscifer in, didn't ya, Zach

My favorite was when he had Bruce Willis between two ferns.

Zach: "You have how many children?"

Bruce: "Three."

Zach: "Which one is your favorite? Ashton?"

This was by far the most awkward interview I have ever seen. I don't know if they plan it beforehand, or if it's improv and the celebrities' reactions are true. Either way, this one made me cringe so many times.

I've seen a few re-posts of this on facebook, what is it from?

The funniest unfunny joke is still unfunny.
