I think the fact that it actually takes some effort (relatively speaking) to make this meme tends to keep the quality somewhat above other image macros and makes it more enjoyable.

I disagree.

Annoying memes will run their course (if they ever actually do) on their own, regardless of whether or not the community has commentary on the progress.

If anything I would say that posting images expressing disdain at what qualifies as 'meme-worthy' material these days can only help things. For the record, I upvoted your post because it's most certainly on-topic if we're discussing the community's reaction to OAG.

While I agree that an individual trying to kill a meme is like a pebble trying to stop the flow of an ocean, we have upvotes and downvotes for a reason. If we decide to be completely passive in the matter, then there's no real point to the voting at all.

As for the meme commentary, I feel the more attention is drawn to the meme, the more it will propagate. No such thing as negative publicity and the like. For every user who agrees with your post, there will be those who decide the best way to get attention is to make a meme themselves. It gets to the point where within a week the negative reaction memes outnumber the original ones, and I find it just as annoying.

For example, I never would have heard of such terms as "swag" or "yolo" without reddit's constant bitching about them. They just were not on my radar until there were thousands of posts complaining about a trend I hadn't seen before.
