The thing about crazy people is they seem like smart people to dumb people

[–]LeBn 59 points60 points ago

The thing about dumb people is that they seem like smart people to crazy people?

[–]c--b 81 points82 points ago

The crazy about people is dumb that like smart people people.

[–]CyricTheMadd 20 points21 points ago

Darmak and Gilead at Tinagra!

[–]iesvs 5 points6 points ago

Darmok and Jalad on the ocean! His eyes uncovered!

[–]Zinthorr 6 points7 points ago

[–]Gramma42ton 4 points5 points ago

I still don't fucking get it.

[–]PottsProngs 2 points3 points ago

Seriously will someone explain this...

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

The race they met there speaks only in metaphors based on stories from their culture.

i.e. you have a long dangerous journey ahead of you and they might say: One does not simply walk into Mordor.

But humans don't understand their references, never having met them and read their stories. Just like I didn't understand why a friend called me a Muggle when Harry Potter first came out.

[–]tostarsiwillreturn[S] -3 points-2 points ago

thank you

[–]nruticat 7 points8 points ago

Sigh... upvote. upvote. upvote.

[–]MTK67 7 points8 points ago

The thing about smart people is they seem like evil robots to crazy people.

[–]KaliYugaz 8 points9 points ago

It doesn't matter whether you are crazy, smart, or dumb, it matters whether you are rational. Indeed, it can be argued that "smart" and well educated people can be worse at rationality, because they have the knowledge and skills necessary to rationalize away anything they find inconvenient to believe in very convincing ways.

What we need in education is not teaching people to be "smart" or knowledgable, but rather educating people to be near-perfectly rational critical thinkers.

[–]thosethatwere 1 point2 points ago

You just argued for exactly what I argue for. We need to teach people mathematics, not arithmetic, at school level.

[–]OptimisticJerk 2 points3 points ago

This touches on some personal experience of mine. I've always wanted to be a rational thinker (despite emotions constantly taking me in stupid directions). Figuring out a way to become a decent and rational person despite whatever bullshit evolution and circumstance stuck you with is a huge pain the ass.

It's entirely doable, but it's hard work. Having been diagnosed with ADHD as a teen, it took until this year (29) figure to out what I needed to learn to become focused (and therefore able to build towards my own happiness). Evolution fucked me, but meditation gave me the "mental" technology to build a proper and advancing level of attention

The other piece for me was "sports". Someone took me to play disc golf and it was love at first throw. I've been outside doing that shit non-stop for the last three months and I'm getting into amazing shape. I can thank my mother for the crazy aggressive "go out and do shit" genes.

I say this because I want people to know that there is always a way to get un-stuck in your life. Plenty of self-help is bullshit (much of the new age nonsense especially). The mental toolset that meditation provides has been developed into a virtual science over thousands of years. If you can get past some of the religious-sounding nonsense words (and the fact that is challenging work), it's a life-enhancing discipline.

[–]MTK67 1 point2 points ago

There was a great segment about this in the book The Guinea Pig Diaries, in which the author analyzes every decision he makes and corrects for logical fallacies.

[–]kioni 0 points1 point ago

I don't think language is a very effective means for communicating those mental tools. Unfortunately it's all we have.

[–]tostarsiwillreturn[S] -2 points-1 points ago

Well said, i wish i could clarify that being an atheist was the reason i put it in this sub but i understand it can go vice versa to christians.

[–]Ninjasantaclause 80 points81 points ago

athiesm does not equal intelligence

and believing in god does not make you an idiot

[–]DFractalH 3 points4 points ago

Has thas been the argument of the OP's post?

Edit: Ah, I see. We're in r/atheism. I just clicked in from the front-page. Ignore! :)

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]MTK67 6 points7 points ago

Then again, Albert Einstein, a man who's name is synonymous with ball-shattering genius, believed in god. Most of the people I know who believe in god are intelligent and not dogmatic (I live in L.A., though). The only person I ever got to know who was religious and dogmatic was in a college anatomy course. As long as we didn't talk about religion/politics, we got along well, and we both got high B's in the course.

Also, people that leave a religion and become atheists generally get there through an ability to think critically, but people who are born into secular households (Like me, I'm a non-religious Jew) can be atheist without having the rationale.

The fact is that half of people are below average intelligence (yes, it should be median intelligence, but I'm going to use the colloquial phrase). Some of those people believe in god, others don't.

[–]CondescendingPrick 106 points107 points ago

This has nothing to do with atheism.

[–]marquizzo 31 points32 points ago

I might be wrong, but I think OP meant it to sound like "smart = science" and "dumb = theists".

[–]Omahunek 8 points9 points ago

I bet a lot of Theists would see this picture and think the opposite. And they have no reason not to from the picture alone.

That's why it doesn't belong here.

[–]juzwa 9 points10 points ago

There were a lot of smart theist scientists... Funny how people in this subreddit seem to think that being atheists makes them automatically smart scientists.

[–]Overeacting -5 points-4 points ago

Nothing has anything to do with atheism.

Edit: Not saying this post is appropriate for the subreddit. Just saying you can say "This has nothing to do with atheism" about almost every single post that has ever been posted to /r/atheism, because there is only one conversation we could ever have that is directly related to atheism.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Aaronblinderjew 33 points34 points ago

When in actuality we are the smart ones

jeez, could you get any more smug?

[–]heygabbagabba 2 points3 points ago

1100+ upvotes says he is preaching to the converted.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Aaronblinderjew 33 points34 points ago

first of all no it isn't suitable, and the quote is shit. I could post it in /r/christianity and say it was about Christians being smarter than atheists, and since /r/Christianity is a much better subreddit I would be called out as a fucking douchebag

You on the other hand farmed out a shitty quote on a shitty subreddit for shitty karma on a shitty website, all by making a blanket statement that implies you and your circlejerk friends are the perfect examples of logic, reason, and intelligence.

You and this subreddit are sickening

[–]cynicalMIND 10 points11 points ago

was Newton dumb? was Einstein dumb? both of them believed in god and many would say they were the smart ones...

[–]thosethatwere 1 point2 points ago

Newton wasn't dumb or smart, he was definitely one of those crazy people. He was a verifiable nutjob. They talk about how close genius is to madness, he was definitely on the madness side.

[–]dschiff -1 points0 points ago

Einstein was not a theist. He was a determinist, atheist, naturalist with a 'religious' sense of wonder at the universe.

This use of 'religious' was a token of what religion is. He accepted religion insofar as it struck itself of mythology - its essential claims - and returned to basically a project to inspire feelings of wonder, solidarity, moral reflection, etc.

""It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly." -Einstein

[–]cynicalMIND 0 points1 point ago

Not sure why youre being downvoted...thats what I was trying to go for see my other comment Im just saying there are plenty of very intelligent people who arent atheists

[–]dschiff 0 points1 point ago

Presumably some angry theists, likely Christians, don't want to accept the obvious truth about Einstein, in his own words.

This is petty and ignorant of them to downvote me for merely repeating Einstein's own words.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]cynicalMIND 8 points9 points ago

Newton: Link Although Einstein didn't follow any organized religion, he believed in the existence of a greater entity.

[–]and_yet_and_yet 3 points4 points ago

You're a fucking idiot.

[–]Nivardica 9 points10 points ago

I haven't been to /r/atheism for a while and I don't want to be negative but how does this relate to atheism?

[–]redpossum 14 points15 points ago

WERE SO CLEVER AMIRITE!?!??!?

[–]ralphlizard 2 points3 points ago

That quote obviously only applies to atheists, since we're obviously correct and more intelligent. Shut up.

[–]redpossum 2 points3 points ago

Good point, sorry

Witty facebook replies be with you

[–]BeardslyMcGee[!] 55 points56 points ago

Being an atheist does not make you smart. Being a theist does not make you dumb. Everyone who up-voted this needs a serious reality check. Get over yourself. Posts like this are why many others in the reddit community have turned on this subreddit.

[–]tueStrange 4 points5 points ago

I just up-voted this because it seems true in a general sense of everything, not in the realm of one side vs. the others mind set of /r/atheism.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]bds0688 3 points4 points ago

You're quite the open-minded person, aren't you?

[–]BeardslyMcGee[!] 6 points7 points ago

You are only reinforcing my opinion. I think that disregarding the social and psychological factors that have created an environment in which the majority of people believe in a higher power, and assuming it is solely because they are dumb, is naive.

This post has nothing to do with "facts and evidence". Those things don't make me angry. Self-righteous nonsense like assuming someone is unintelligent based on the worldview they have adopted (often through no fault of their own, but through life-long social conditioning) is what makes me angry.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]BeardslyMcGee[!] 3 points4 points ago

First of all, I am not a theist. I consider myself agnostic. Some here think that even makes me an atheist.

Secondly, I think you are looking at things in a very simple way, with no respect for the complexities inherent in a social and cultural issue such as this. Like I said in my last comment, you must examine the reasons why people believe what they believe. Funny how some in this community display such a commitment to learning about the natural world yet seem so apprehensive to apply the same motivation in learning about people.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]BeardslyMcGee[!] 4 points5 points ago

However, if you think believing in a bearded man in the sky is anything less than stupid, you're naive.

From your first comment.

What are you even talking about? I just explained that I (and I know most reasonable atheists) do NOT think all religious people are stupid. This is called prejudice, and I don't condone it or employ it.

For the record, I hadn't seen your edit when I typed last comment. Either way, It seems you have changed your tune.

EDIT: Also, I am done with this conversation.

[–]OldAccWasCharlievil 40 points41 points ago

HURR DURR WE R SMART AMIRITE GUISE.

Fuck this shitty subreddit and the circlejerking cunts that unvoted this stupid fucking post. It doesn't even make sense because it could easily apply to us thinking Christians were crazy but actually they were incredibly smart. To top it all off it's completely unrelated to atheism unless you are the typical smug asshole that populates this subreddit and gets off on how smart they think they are.

[–]inlinevoid 5 points6 points ago

But this applies solely to us Atheists! We're smart but dumb Christians think we're crazy.

Also, Ron Paul 2012. [11]

[–]MaximumUltra 1 point2 points ago

SHUT UP

I wasn't finished ego tripping.

[–]coffeecoffee12 6 points7 points ago

I've always tried my best in life to not judge the intelligence of people based on their religious or political ideas. I've met extraordinarily intelligent people who otherwise believed in ridiculous notions.

[–]therant 5 points6 points ago

What a beautiful high horse you have there!

[–]Pedroptz 23 points24 points ago

This is so relevant to r/atheism!

[–]OmegaXXIII -4 points-3 points ago

HAH HAH HAH HAH YOU'RE SO RIGHT!!!!!!

HAH HAH HAH HAH!!!!!

[–]ezralius 10 points11 points ago

This is one of the most arrogant things I've seen in a while. Wow. I honestly thought this was /r/magicskyfairy

[–]ThatIsMyHat -1 points0 points ago

I'm gonna go ahead and pray that that's a troll subreddit.

[–]ezralius 3 points4 points ago

It's an /r/atheism circlejerk.

[–]OldAccWasCharlievil 5 points6 points ago

Except unlike /r/atheism their circlejerking is a joke.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]ezralius 0 points1 point ago

It actually is. Most (if not, all) posts are links to actual posts from /r/atheism.

[–]The_PowerCosmic 7 points8 points ago

The thing about /r/atheism is that it seems to be less and less about atheism.

[–]MaximumUltra 3 points4 points ago

It's morphing into the biggest circlejerk ever created.

[–]OldAccWasCharlievil 2 points3 points ago

It's like someone wanted to take down /r/circlejerk so they created the largest group of smug circlejerking assholes and put them into an established subreddit to turn it into something that could compete with /r/circlejerk without alerting them until it was too late.

[–]altrego99 8 points9 points ago

Oh good. Everybody I know think I'm crazy, so I guess I'm smart!

[–]gusset25 4 points5 points ago

what;s the image?

[–]ShanerT 6 points7 points ago

Ah, yes. We should all safely assume that people think we're crazy because we're smart and they're dumb. None of the way people perceive us has anything to do with our own, controllable, behavior.

[–]bds0688 7 points8 points ago

Oh, neat. A blanket, thinly veiled statement about the intelligence of people in belief.

But no, they're totally the intolerant ones all of the time.

[–]rneu12 7 points8 points ago

While I agree with the statement I have to say I do not think that this belongs in r/atheism. As an atheist myself I have to ask are you implying that all atheists are smart and are viewed as crazy by the religious? If so I have to say that is an incredible generalization. Some of the smartest people I have ever met are devout Christians, Jews, etc. while I also know some pretty stupid atheists. Again I agree with the statement I'm just unsure this actually belongs in this subreddit.

[–]yes_thats_right 1 point2 points ago

You were way too polite.

[–]rneu12 0 points1 point ago

people will listen more if you whisper than if you scream

[–]d20nt_ban_me_again 13 points14 points ago

Typical r/atheism trash. Using a pic of an achievement by the wright brothers who happened to be FUCKING PROTESTANTS to advance bullshit r/atheism idiocy.

Smart isn't an adjective I'd use to describe r/atheism trash like the OP.

[–]Psychic_Monkey 13 points14 points ago

Wait a minute... If we think Christians are crazy, does that make them really intelligent?

[–]Thorston 12 points13 points ago

P--->Q is not the same thing as Q---->P. The fact that all rottweilers are dogs does not make all dogs rottweilers.

[–]millertime0503 3 points4 points ago

Mmmm, logic.

[–]Thorston -1 points0 points ago

You like logic too! What's your favorite logical transformation?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Thorston 1 point2 points ago

I still think this applies. You are right in saying that I'm using symbols for deductive logic. But, the thing is, while the P--->Q statement (being smart makes dumb people think you are crazy) that the pic states is based on induction, when you try to translate that to "when dumb people think you are crazy, they are actually really smart" you are not making an inductive argument. Without paying attention to empirical evidence (not saying he's unempirical, just talking about this case), Psychic_Monkey claimed that this first empirical claim entails a new claim. Whenever you go from one premise to another without bringing in empirical evidence, you have to use deductive logic. Deductive logic was misapplied here (the fallacy is called affirming the consequent, even though it seems like it would make more sense to call it affirming the antecedent, since you are trying to affirm the first part of the if then statement, but whatever).

[–]Ratnothan -1 points0 points ago

Logic? You're crazy!!!

[–]Accordian_Thief 0 points1 point ago

Only if you're calling us dumb.

[–]gridirongeek -1 points0 points ago

We think Christians are dumb, they think we're crazy and that makes us the smart ones.

[–]OldAccWasCharlievil 0 points1 point ago

I think you're dumb and a smug asshole typical of the idiots that are regulars to this subreddit.

[–]Thameus -4 points-3 points ago

Young doubters are given a choice by their parents' churches: toe the line, or we will destroy you socially. The smart ones not only toe the line, but figure out how to play the game. Once they own the faith, it becomes in their best interest to support "the community". This is not dumb, and (on a personal level) it is not crazy. It just leads to insane group behavior.

[–]Wolfmaster013 2 points3 points ago

Einstein defined insanity as... Oh what's the point.

[–]Thameus -2 points-1 points ago

I don't think that's how Einstein defined insanity. When you're 12 (or even 15) you're pretty much not thinking on that level.

[–]Wolfmaster013 1 point2 points ago

I apologize if I offended you I was only attempting to lighten the mood, and as far as I'm concerned, age has nothing to do with my level of thinking.

[–]Wolfmaster013 1 point2 points ago

And I was referencing what I had thought was a well known anecdote on Einstein saying insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. That was poorly put across and I apologize for that.

[–]ReyTheRed 5 points6 points ago

I'm pretty smart, and smart people still do seem somewhat insane to me, myself included.

[–]c--b 7 points8 points ago

Schizophrenia has a strong link to intelligence, even higher functioning animals have higher incidences of schizophrenia.

Crazy and intelligent are separated by a very thin line it seems.

[–]OshinoMeme 3 points4 points ago

Crazy and intelligent are separated by a very thin line it seems.

Reminds me of a dialogue in Pirates of the Caribbean when Jack and Will were walking underwater with an upturned boat.

Will:This is either madness... or brilliance.

Jack: It's remarkable how often those two traits coincide.

[–]SketchyFletching 0 points1 point ago

You act like we haven't all seen a beautiful mind.

[–]bloopeeriod 1 point2 points ago

The thing is being smart means having to endure the crazy, dumb shit stupid people do and say. Since smart people are outnumbered its easy to feel like you are on the fringe. It all combines to make you feel a bit nuts.

[–]YouCantOutrunABear 1 point2 points ago

I'm about 100% sure being smart does not in any way preclude you from also being crazy. In fact one could probably make a decent case that being more intelligent than average is in itself a form of insanity, given a loose enough definition of the term sane.

[–]Deep_Into_Nature 1 point2 points ago

Just because you're an atheist it doesn't mean you're smart..

[–]Kalifornia310 1 point2 points ago

Great.. Now you're gonna have a bunch of crazy people thinking they're smart.

[–]jamesbarbour 1 point2 points ago

Yeah you are all fucking geniuses for not believing in God. Congrats, now continue jacking eachother off.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

what does this have to do with atheism?

[–]yes_thats_right 6 points7 points ago

Not only this, but the picture is of two theists, used to represent the 'smart' people. I guess that makes OP the dumb one.

[–]gratuitous_italics 3 points4 points ago

This, strictly speaking, doesn't really belong in r/atheism. I'll condescend to admit that many of my friends are terrifyingly intelligent, though.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]gratuitous_italics 1 point2 points ago

Check the fourth definition, please. In this context it means precisely what I think it means.

[–]TheVetrinarian 3 points4 points ago

You're getting a lot of downvotes, but are totally right. Oh well.

[–]JoeClever 2 points3 points ago

I love how most Atheists call Christians crazy yet this shot goes on your subreddit You're both retards to me...

[–]Lawtonfogle 0 points1 point ago

So what happens if smart and dumb people think you are crazy?

[–]CyricTheMadd 1 point2 points ago

You join the Tea Party.

[–]cynicdreamer 0 points1 point ago

A character named Abraham paraphrased this rather eloquently in The Walking Dead comic. Good stuff.

[–]ludvigsra 0 points1 point ago

Like it better as stated in The Walking Dead comics by Sgt. Abraham Ford: "The thing about smart motherfuckers is that they sound like crazy motherfuckers to dumb motherfuckers."

[–]snap_wilson 0 points1 point ago

So do crazy people.

[–]_langa_ 0 points1 point ago

If this were true, then how the fuck do psychologists do their job?

[–]SardonicNihilist 0 points1 point ago

There's a Venn diagram that can be made from this

[–]VentureIndustries 0 points1 point ago

hmm, this reminds me of an old commercial.

[–]juggaloholocaust 0 points1 point ago

The wright brothers father was a practicing bishop of the church and according to everything i could find they were both Christians as well. The christian bishop brought home the helicopter toy and brought them up to be inventors which lead to them inventing flight. But a smart person would of researched something before making them look like a crazy person.

[–]Biohazmat 0 points1 point ago

soo..If you are correct. The "aliens guy" is Smart, seeming crazy, AND EVERYONE IS DUMB

[–]sinisterunicorn 0 points1 point ago

The thing about true genius, is that appears as insanity to everyone else. - Christopher Walken

[–]v4-digg-refugee 0 points1 point ago

Couldn't this be posted conversely?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Yea.. I got so tired of being called cray that I think I've effectively dumbed myself down... Maybe should fix that.

[–]lpetersonrhs 0 points1 point ago

Who the Fuck is that in the picture? If it were Wilbur and Orville there wouldn't be two people on the ground. This is bull.

[–]Galinaceo 0 points1 point ago

Could be posted in r/Christianity. The Bible even says something in this lines: what is unwise for God seems wise for men, and what is wise for God seems unwise for men.

EDIT: /r/atheism upvote behavior compared to the comments is like Mr Hyde compared to Dr. Jekyll. You guys are nice, I don't know how this thing get to front page.

[–]koavf 0 points1 point ago

Smug text-as-image again? This is the worst subreddit ever.

[–]8002reverse 0 points1 point ago

Pilots looking down at people since 1903. (⌐■_■)

[–]MaximumUltra 0 points1 point ago

We look at pictures with text on them, we're all so smart guys.

[–]MaximumUltra 0 points1 point ago

With threads like this, I'm starting to realize it's less about smart vs dumb, and more about ego vs non-ego.

[–]laportez 0 points1 point ago

This is clever! So it must automatically be claimed by r/atheism! Because atheists are responsible for all the clever and righteous things going on in the world!!!

[–]badmonkey0001 0 points1 point ago

I know it's meme-ing out a little, but this seems a very appropriate response.

[–]GUI_Junkie 0 points1 point ago

Dilbert principle: We are all idiots. Brian's addendum: I'm not.

[–]greyestofblue 0 points1 point ago

No. This is false. Michelle Bachman is crazy. I am smart. She is crazy. I suggest you delete this post and punish yourself.

[–]Anus_Blender 0 points1 point ago

OP's post says that smart people seem crazy (to dumb people). This does not imply that all people who seem crazy are smart.

[–]Kingshill 0 points1 point ago

That's crazy talk!

Wait..

[–]frostbite225 0 points1 point ago

As a resident of Conneticut i believe the first plane was flown here

[–]toSTONEiGO 0 points1 point ago

And if we apply this consistently we get Hannibal Lector for president.

[–]gummz00 0 points1 point ago

Smart does not necessarily equal atheist.

[–]Patricoda 0 points1 point ago

Well they do say genius is on the border of madness..

[–]mushroom83 0 points1 point ago

And really modest too...

[–]Synergythepariah 0 points1 point ago

So we're the dumb ones and the conspiracy nuts are the smart ones?

[–]seven1six 0 points1 point ago

"The true sign of a genius is that the dunces are all in confederacy against him" - Swift, Random Thoughts on Various Subjects

[–]Person_On_The_Web 0 points1 point ago

Fools can enjoy the company of intelligence too, what matters is application.

[–]radchad85 0 points1 point ago

I must be dumb because I think everyone is fucking crazy.

[–]meliaesc 0 points1 point ago

Don't we think theists are crazy or something? Damn, why do I even visit r/all anymore...

[–]lunsfordandsuns 0 points1 point ago

So... are you saying religious people are the smart ones?

[–]Slick_drip99 0 points1 point ago

This is a perfect way to sum up my relationship with my mother. No it's not a typical athiest-Christian mother-daughter relationship, she's cool with my beliefs. But. Our different personal beliefs, my degree in art an my love and hope for a homestead of my own has lead my mother to treat me like I am the idiot. This image helps remind me that I'm not the idiot or the crazy one.

[–]beaster456 0 points1 point ago

If anyone reads "The Walking Dead" you'll remember Abraham's awesome twist on this, "The thing about smartmotherfucker's is that seem like crazymotherfucker's to dumbmotherfucker's, and Eugene is one smartmotherfucker."

[–]palz2015 0 points1 point ago

I heard something like this: "The thing about smart motherfuckers is that they sound like mad motherfuckers to stupid motherfuckers."

[–]ht15 0 points1 point ago

I love how the atheists on here like to act like they're a part of an elite squad who are masters of logic and reason. Such reactonaries. Denying religion seems to be your pedastool and you guys think it puts you so high up. I'm speaking specifically to the American atheists when I tell you that most scholars in other parts of the world are far ahead of you and laugh at the pride you guys display in "disproving" ideas we've been laughing at for years. You've got some catching up to do so get off your Damn pedastool.

[–]garybc 0 points1 point ago

Believing the evidence for evolution seems to me eviednce for a better style of thinking than denying evolution.

[–]Matzke 0 points1 point ago

I love how all the comments say how pretentious this image is, yet it still gets voted to the front page.

[–]NotReallyAtheism 0 points1 point ago

And... what does this have to do with atheism?

[–]Karmanacht 0 points1 point ago

Stay classy, /r/atheism, keep patting yourself on the back.

[–]Oranos116 -1 points0 points ago

In that case I am pretty damn smart.

[–]Amir616 0 points1 point ago

The thing about this quote is, it could have been superimposed on a picture of jesus.

[–]supergalactic 0 points1 point ago

Every third post on this subreddit is a head with (sometimes irrelevant) text. Get some OC, and make it about atheism.

So was Ted Kaczynski.
