I've seen that gif so many times before and I still don't understand why he didn't let go.

[–]Falcon_Kick 85 points86 points ago

pole-vaulter here! if you let go at the top of the vault, you fall straight down into the metal box! (done this before from about 12 feet, not fun. You can snap your leg in half doing that) It's better to hang on and fall at an angle than go straight down

[–]veterejf 47 points48 points ago

Another PV'er here, I found it best, when in that situation is to slide down it. Not necessarily at the top, there usually in some point of that progression there where you can slide down/let go at a relatively safe point.

[–]yourethatguy 27 points28 points ago

Another pole-vaulter here. Listen to veterejf, not Falcon_Kick. I've seen too many people getting hurt letting their weight hang at the top of the pole.

[–]TigerMeltz 21 points22 points ago

another PV'er here, why are we not commentating that his step was clearly a few feet under than it should, causing him to lose his momentum in the first place?

[–]DancingWithKafka 88 points89 points ago

Why are there so many pole-vaulters on Reddit?

Is there a big amateur pole-vaunting scene? Or are you all pros?

[–]yourethatguy 54 points55 points ago

Pole-vaulter here, we pole-vaulters stick together and like to announce to others that we pole-vault.

On a side note, pole-vault.

[–]NorFla 42 points43 points ago

Discus thrower here - The mat on the other side is a great place to take a nap.

[–]yourethatguy 13 points14 points ago

You lazy discuss throwers are so typical.

Wait, what am I saying. All the field event athletes are damn lazy.

[–]kaede1s 23 points24 points ago

3200m-er here. Yeah, you guys kinda are.

[–]tehbeardman 1 point2 points ago

Hammer thrower checking in, feel free to throw as far as me and I'll stop laying on your comfy mat.

But for real, our events tend to get done first, wtf else am I going to do?

[–]sillygrav 6 points7 points ago

Yay. Pole vaulter here. Pole vault.

[–]Kensin 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty damn impressed at all the pole vaulters around reddit. Who knew?

[–]Groening_References 3 points4 points ago

Sticking together is what good waffles do.

[–]Garrett-R 0 points1 point ago

What do the blue waffles do?

[–]shibbs 2 points3 points ago

pole-vaulter here. I can confirm that we all pole-vault. pole-vault?

[–]i_justwanna_knowww 1 point2 points ago

Stick

Ha.

[–]cweaver 5 points6 points ago

Pole-vaulting is a fairly technical skill, I'd imagine pole-vaulters tend to skew slightly nerdier than the rest of track-and-field people, and therefore end up on reddit in disproportionate numbers.

Suddenly I'm wishing someone had been giving IQ tests to Olympic athletes for the last 200 years so we could see a big chart showing the averages for all the various sports.

[–]CocoSavege 1 point2 points ago

I'd definitely be interested in a study but I don't think 'nerd/technical' would be the biggest trend.

Some olympic sports will trend... rich.

There are a bunch of sports that have a relatively low cost of entry and amateur is available to a broad swathe of people. Of course elite development costs time and money and the driven and talented and genetically gifted will succeed better when given infrastructure and support but I presume it really helps to also have a broad amateur base.

But some sports are non-prestigey and/or expensive. It's verging on 'hobbying olympics'

Off the top of my head: Yachting, Dressage/Horsethingy, Modern Pentathalon, Luge seem like 3 good candidates.

There might be a second tier. Synchro swimming? Fencing? Downhill/alpine/snowboarding?

I would think some of my examples for 'expensive/hobby' sports might be disproportionately high for IQ or whatever since rich.

[–]Thelazychild 0 points1 point ago

I think all of the contact sports with potential head trauma would clearly lose.

[–]Im_probably_drunk 2 points3 points ago

That and his drive.. See how early he stops driving his leg?

[–]yourethatguy 1 point2 points ago

How could you possibly see his take off? There is someone standing right infront of him while he takes of the ground. He does seem to be leaning a little far back while taking off, but that could just be him slowing down, and causing him to be under.

I was always a couple inches under and it didn't really matter. As long as you get your hands up and jump of the ground you should drive through the pit.

[–]TigerMeltz 2 points3 points ago

I was always under too for the first couple of months. However, you can tell by the positioning of his hands. when he jumps, they are clearly behind his head and not "punching" up. And i'm sure all other vaulters have spent many a practice holding the pole over head in the box to find their optimal take off spot. When your arms are that far back you weren't under a little, you were under a lot.

[–]yourethatguy -1 points0 points ago

Actually your back hand should fall back behind your head immediately after take of before you row forward. It allows you to wind up your swing so to speak. Not that this guy has any sort of swing what so ever.

[–]TigerMeltz 3 points4 points ago

agree that this guy had a lot more problems than his takeoff? considering it was probably an america's funniest home videos clip judging by the abc watermark

[–]yourethatguy 1 point2 points ago

yeah, i think this guy just isn't very good. we could over analysis the crap out of this video because we all do this to every pv video.

[–]Mhaelful 0 points1 point ago

Sprinter here. I hate it when my pecker flops back and forth in my onesie when I run.

[–]callofdinner 5 points6 points ago

thanks for the explanation, this gif always annoyed me.

good for you

[–]skakruk 3 points4 points ago

Extremely relevant username, flows quite nicely with the comment.

[–]katelynroxx 3 points4 points ago

Get a new keyboard, your Shift and 1 are sticky.

[–]willykins 1 point2 points ago

ex Pole vaulter. I'm still trying to figure out what he did wrong. Not enough swing?

[–]Kiowa707 4 points5 points ago

All I see is that his take-off wasn't exploding as in his arms didn't fully extend, he didn't raise his knee high enough, and basically didn't power through the plant. I've done this a couple of times and it's signs of either being too tired to vault or just too lazy.

[–]yourethatguy 2 points3 points ago

Exactly. He had an extremely linear take off and his arms weren't raised.

If you don't have your hand as high as you can get them, you're going to have a bad time.

[–]Vic_Valiant 2 points3 points ago

Combination of things, but the easy answer is he didn't have enough speed for the height he was holding up on the pole. He collapses his left arm and abandons the bend almost immediately, trying to counteract his lack of speed. Obviously still isn't enough, stalling him out before he gets the pole vertical. At that point, he stops his swing and holds on for dear life.

[–]veterejf 1 point2 points ago

One thing's for sure, he wasn't stiff with his arms, he lost a lot of momentum with his arms when he went into the vault. He didn't completely convert all the momentum to keep it in the bend and going forward. He also looked like he was late to the box (which was why he wasn't able to keep his arms straight. Like the pole his the box before he was on the takeoff step.)

[–]Falcon_Kick 1 point2 points ago

Bad plant, hands too far apart, double-legged the swing a little bit

[–]yourethatguy 0 points1 point ago

his hands are definitely not too far apart. If anything, having your hands far apart would allow you to drive the plant easier, although you would probably lock out your arms.

[–]42Chances 1 point2 points ago

You know how the pole is kind of warped and tends to bend that way, so you should try to plant it so that the warp works with the bend going forward: Perhaps the pole was planted so that the warped part faced any way other than forwards, thus giving it a reason to bend in that direction.

Perhaps that wouldn't have enough effect, but I was always very OCD about making sure I planted straight on with the warp so that the pole didn't give me any surprising bends.

[–]Ozyman666 0 points1 point ago

spider

[–]std10 0 points1 point ago

It could have been his run was off?

[–]liberaljesus 1 point2 points ago

Actually, I find it safer to just drop and spread your legs a bit so that they land on the mat instead of the box.

[–]FrankTheYank 1 point2 points ago

Yup, I let go once and the pole snapped back and I broke my nose

[–]Thelazychild 0 points1 point ago

I was blowing through a pole and was too scared to continue which resulted in me letting go of the pole and getting smacked in the ass by it when the bend unfurled.

[–]flunkmeister 0 points1 point ago

Was that post NSFW?

[–]ExistentLOList 0 points1 point ago

I could totally be doing the Monday morning quarterbacking kind of thing (on top of just having zero experience with anything related to pole vaulting), but couldn't he have just let go at that one point when the pole was bent and he was lower to the ground? It seems like that would've been a good point to do it and he missed the opportunity.

I'm wondering if he was just too in the moment to grab a good chance to safely drop, or if it's not as straight-forward as I'm thinking it is.

[–]Falcon_Kick 1 point2 points ago

if you let go at that point, pole rebounds in odd ways. I knew a guy whose pole actually broke at this point in the vault in between his hands, and the bottom part unbent very quickly into his other hand, tearing it open and cracking the bone

[–]Thinkiknoweverything 2 points3 points ago

TIL way more about pole vaulting than I ever thought I would know

[–]benuntu 0 points1 point ago

Also, if you let go further down when the pole is bent it snaps back and hits you in the face. This can knock a tooth out and require stitches to your lip...ugh.

[–]Im_probably_drunk 0 points1 point ago

Confirmed. Former Pole-Vaulter here.. I cracked my head open by letting go. Landed right in the plant box, also from about 12-13 feet). Pretty cool crescent moon shaped scar on the back of my head now (14 yrs later)

The guy didn't have a chance on this vault. Your knee needs to end up at your chest, driving you forward. He stops his drive way early, gravity took it from there.

[–]ruddelsticks 0 points1 point ago

Still doesn't explain why he didn't let go at all. Unless 3 seconds in when he's like 2 feet off the ground about to be sling shotted away is still considered part of the "top of the vault".

[–]Evixed 0 points1 point ago

Been there done that! Let go at the top, pole snapped back at my face and I got a lovely bruise on my eye for about 4 weeks.

[–]TBS96 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, after all those times you'd think he would learn

[–]CTRL_ALT_RAPE 1 point2 points ago

Life is all about knowing what to hold on to and what to let go of. Sometimes we get the two mixed up.

[–]std10 0 points1 point ago

I've had this happen except I did let go. The pole snapped back into my shin and it was a bad time.

[–]boodhabelly 0 points1 point ago

PVer here, I could always find a spot where I could let go and land on the mat.

[–]blackeyblake 27 points28 points ago

As a former pole vaulter, this happens more often than most would like to admit.

[–]tdn 34 points35 points ago

As someone with no experience or knowledge of that sport, I can confirm this.

[–]Not_A_Meme -1 points0 points ago

Happy cake day, enjoy your karma!

Also not a pole vaulter.

[–]jerkey2 1 point2 points ago

Guys, it's okay! He's not a meme!

[–]Punkndrublic 1 point2 points ago

I did it for one season in high school, it happened a lot.

[–]Could_Be_Your_Father 1 point2 points ago

And when you pole vault and hurdle (causing you to wear long hurdler/sprinter spikes) this can happen to you. :(

[–]joenot443 2 points3 points ago

Ouch. Looks kind of cool though, I'd go around telling people it was a puma or something - better than owning yourself with your own cleat.

[–]Could_Be_Your_Father 0 points1 point ago

"I was in Africa curing AIDS in a small village when a cheetah came out and tried to kill some of the tribal children. I managed to fend him off from killing some children but he caught my leg. I ripped his head off and the entire village ate like kings for the next week. I then cured AIDS. That is how I got that scar."

The scar looks pretty cool now. It's a bad angle but it doesn't look too much better in person. The picture earlier was right after the incident. That picture is about a year after it happened now.

[–]Vic_Valiant 15 points16 points ago

I don't understand the fascination with this gif, honestly. As a former pole vaulter, this was something you saw daily. The REAL interesting shit ranged from the horrible (poles breaking) to the comical (straddling the bar, missing the mats, etc). My favorite by far though is when someone accidentally slips their grip while bending the pole, letting it snap back right into their body midair. The amount of energy stored up during a bend, all transferred at once into smacking a dude in the nuts might be the funniest / most horrific thing I've ever seen.

EDIT: I no speak good like.

[–]ellisdeez 6 points7 points ago

a friend of mine had a pole snap back into his nuts. he now only has one nut.

[–]akatherder 2 points3 points ago

As a non-former pole vaulter, this is something I've never seen before. Track and field doesn't get tons of press in the USA.

[–]TigerMeltz 1 point2 points ago

I had a solid bruise from my right shoulder down diagonally to my left thigh.

[–]DJ_Deathflea 15 points16 points ago

My interpretation: He got up there, saw some cat poop on the mat, and noped his way in the other direction.

[–]DJ_Jantz 1 point2 points ago

We meet again.

[–]DJ_Deathflea 5 points6 points ago

Why hello. magical secret DJ fist bump thingy

[–]5741354110059687423 -2 points-1 points ago

My interpretation: He got up there, saw a spider on the mat, and noped his way in the other direction. >

[–]fourtwizzy 2 points3 points ago

Am I the only one watching this hoping he gets over the bar the second time?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, oh shit. Yeah, oh shit. I wouldn't say I survived, but I definitely thrived.

[–]coldvault 1 point2 points ago

Paraphrased Bridesmaids?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Hell yeah!

[–]Punkndrublic 1 point2 points ago

I used to do (attempt) pole vault in high school. It's one of the weirdest feelings in the world to be accelerated in midair by a flexing fiberglass pole.

[–]nexmillonaire 1 point2 points ago

"Screw you guys, I'm going home"

[–]fizzl 1 point2 points ago

Have you ever tried pole vaulting? It's fucking hard!

[–]cattravelingrecipes 1 point2 points ago

This is "bar hopping" yes?

[–]ewest 1 point2 points ago

That thing looks like it has a mind of its own.

[–]SwedishChef727 0 points1 point ago

I smell a new event!

[–]Norma5tacy 0 points1 point ago

Me if I attempted to try this sport.

[–]Peetzaman 0 points1 point ago

[–]tfgot 0 points1 point ago

[–]codythomashunsberger 0 points1 point ago

That was too close to being a nutshot to not be a nutshot.

[–]niceypoo -1 points0 points ago

Holy moly this gif surely hasnt been on reddit, front page even, in the very recent history. Multiple times.

Kill yourself.

I think I saw this on TV, it was an ABC thing about documentaries (it was on that segment they devote to stuff like serial killers, tragic accidents, missing people, etc) and I think he cracked his skull open but survived, and it led to the beatification of a saint.

[–]thekokirikid 4 points5 points ago

I think you might be thinking of something else-- if you look closely, his head doesn't hit the ground

[–]windowtosh 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, that looks right. I must be mistaken then. Thanks for pointing that out. :)
