This is Oona Kivela, a world renowned, incredibly talented pole dancer and athlete. You should check out more of her videos at her website.

Here she is doing a dance to the Diva Dance song from the Fifth Element. (Reddit loves this movie, right?) http://polechampionship.com/competitors-semifinals/oona-kivela/

The costumes are small for the same reason that figure skating costumes have short skirts. They are a necessity of the art. You need to have skin contact in order to stick to the pole. For most women, that means at the very least wearing shorts. The higher in difficult the move, the more you need to use skin... hip holds, elbow holds, knee holds, armpit holds, etc. It would be as impossible as wearing silk gloves.

Many pole dance competitions have strict dress codes, with immediate disqualification for exposure. It's another way to help the public image of pole dancing and set it apart from stripping, although there are obviously some shared roots in burlesque.

As a result, true pole dance videos are usually SFW. I can't promise the same for whatever you might find by googling "stripper videos." :)

Competitive pole dancing overlaps a lot with acrobatics, gymnastics and chinese pole. It can be very similar to what you might see at a circus performance - see Oona or Jenyne Butterfly. Of course, some dancers embrace the burlesque/stripper elements and do it beautifully - for example, Alethea Austin.

I'm glad you mentioned that she was an athlete in addition. Her body looks a lot like every gymnast on my team. Intense core, thick biceps and thighs, and pecs instead of breasts. She's incredible and I doubt there are many pole dancers out there who can do what she can without being built similarly.

Oona is a pretty big deal in the pole dance community. This video made the rounds there a while ago. :)

Another one of my favorites is Natasha Wang. She started pole dancing at age 29 with no prior experience in any form of dance. She won the US Pole Dance Federation competition last year.

There are lots of pole dancing schools in NYC. The most famous is probably Body and Pole - many of their instructors are champions. I've never been there, but I know people who have. A friend of mine teaches at Shockra Studio, which has a great beginner program. There is also an S Factor in NYC, which is where my instructor got her start (and taught for several years).

If you're willing to travel to NJ, I highly recommend Dakini Movement in Warren, NJ which is where I learned to pole. I had to move away from the area earlier this year... I miss it so much!

Yea I went to the Body and Pole website and it was so crappy I thought it was fake...also I live NJ! But work in NY so I have moved all of my activities to NY since I hope to move there soon. Warren is pretty far from me though. Thanks for the info, I'll check out Body and Pole again.

I don't know how good Body and Pole is for absolute beginners. Like I said, they are a famous studio with some amazing teachers, and I'm sure their advanced classes are outstanding. But from what I've heard, being that they are a studio of champions, they are somewhat competition focused, and that sounds like too high pressure of an environment for me (I'm a bit of an awkward penguin).

S Factor would be more like what I'm used to... a fusion of yoga, pilates, and pole that focuses on sensuality, not just feats of strength. Sheila Kelley has been on Oprah a few times.

Where in NJ do you live? There might be other studios close to you.

Oh I wasn't talking about getting into pole dancing for fun - I want to get into competing so Body and Pole sounds like it's right up my alley. I'm already competitive in jiu jitsu and weightlifting, and was a competitive gymnast for 10 years. When I saw this video, I think I heard competitive pole dancing calling my name. I'm not into the sensuality part really, more so the strength area :P

I'm from Bergen County - I may look into some place in my area temporarily until I move for the weekends, since during the week I train for my other activities after work in the city.

LOL, sounds like you have it figured out then. :) If you hope to compete, then Body and Pole sounds like the perfect place. It's the home studio of Kyra Johannesen, Lian Tal, Marlo Fisken, Steven Retchless, Michelle Stanek... basically a who's who of NY pole dancing.

I took a workshop with Steven once (he's the dancer who was a finalist on America's Got Talent, and exposed just how homophobic Piers Morgan is). His workshop kicked my ass, but in a good way. He's a lot of fun.
