[–]MentalStampede 236 points237 points ago

That's from Leviathan?

[–][deleted] 97 points98 points ago

So why didn't you say that in your title ?

[–]lysergicpyschonaut 15 points16 points ago

does it matter dude?

[–]gkx 18 points19 points ago

It would have been nice. I'd never heard of Leviathan and it looked really cool.

Then again, I just checked the comments...

[–]SirDaveYognaut 9 points10 points ago

Yeah, it is a really good steam punk/evolutionist reinterpretation of World War 1.

[–]ShermanatorLegend 1 point2 points ago

Yeah It would have explained the whole Darwinist/Clanker Key at the Top

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

No

[–]wwater 19 points20 points ago

Yes

[–]Ireallydk 8 points9 points ago

Harder!

[–]Paul_Baumer 5 points6 points ago

That's my safe word!

[–]T_Mucks 3 points4 points ago

"safe word" is my sleeper trigger!

[–]Mind_Uranus[S] -4 points-3 points ago

Really? Do you mean I can put a link in the title?

[–]SirOrakle 81 points82 points ago

I think he means that you should have said the map was from Leviathan, not a WWI map.

[–]TJ1497 20 points21 points ago

Exactly, that bothered me

[–]Mind_Uranus[S] 11 points12 points ago

Oh, I got it, sorry for that. How can I fix that then? delete and repost with the fixed title?

[–]Jisaw 28 points29 points ago

No. You must equalize the wrong with another wrong. Post one of these labelled as a Leviathan map.

[–]ernesthelp 8 points9 points ago

Huh, I guess two wrongs do make a right... brb, murdering the guy I kidnapped, maybe I won't get charged...

[–]Arknell 3 points4 points ago

From now on my battlecry shall be "HARK! HARK! THE DOGS DO BARK!".

[–]firex726 3 points4 points ago

I liked it, but find it hard to get into the second book.

[–]BaronThundergoose 1 point2 points ago

how so?

[–]firex726 1 point2 points ago

Just found it hard, I read the first one then the second was not released till a freaking year later. By then I had kind of lost interest and moved on. I bet if I re-read the first I would find it easier for the second.

[–]BaronThundergoose 2 points3 points ago

May i suggest the audio book to you? I've both read and listened to the series and actually i prefer listening to the audio version because Alan Cumming does an absolute cracker of a job with the voices.

[–]J_of_K 0 points1 point ago

So... do crackers have nice voices?

[–]BaronThundergoose 2 points3 points ago

[–]firex726 0 points1 point ago

Yea, that's how I have the second.

[–]mothoc 0 points1 point ago

Upvote for recommending the audio versions. I listened to the entire trilogy that way, and Alan Cumming does an amazing job.

[–]downward_dogma 0 points1 point ago

Keep going..it is really so good.

[–]wartsarus 1 point2 points ago

I just clicked the link and the Leviathan and Behemoth are the names of the two newest roller coasters at Canada's Wonderland. Coincidence?

[–]MentalStampede 3 points4 points ago

Sweet!

[–]Pootwoot 2 points3 points ago

Epic book, have all 3 of them and they are one my most read series...

[–]Lampjaw 5 points6 points ago

One of my favorite books. The first edition cover is the best art I've ever seen and I was disappointed that the other two didn't have such great art.

[–]allelujahhaptism 1 point2 points ago

I share this sentiment. I was even less happy with the fact that they re-did the cover of the first one to look like the other two. There appears to be a trend where people just have to have a character on the cover, for whatever reason. Other recent examples of cover art switching like that are Ready Player One and Eon: Dragoneye Reborn.

[–]Lampjaw 0 points1 point ago

Totally. I love abstract stuff like this. And it's actually what attracted me to the book at all. Just walked into a Borders and there it was out front and I fell in love with the cover.

[–]Beefpop 1 point2 points ago

Yes MR. Sharp

[–]squawvalleyfranz 0 points1 point ago

Such an awesome book.

[–]Noturordinaryguy 73 points74 points ago

He does really cool work http://www.keiththompsonart.com/

[–]RareBehemoth 12 points13 points ago

Thanks for posting this, I was going to post the same link if someone else hadn't already. Great artists deserve credit.

[–]Noturordinaryguy 3 points4 points ago

I agree, whenever people post art I always love to see the source

[–]Anodesu 2 points3 points ago

Man, i have so many how to draw books with his portfolio work in it from years ago. One of my favourites is 'How To Draw and Paint the Undead'. Basically all the art was his.

[–]Noturordinaryguy 1 point2 points ago

He really likes to draw zombies. He's pretty darn talented.

[–]Anodesu 2 points3 points ago

Zombies and robots. Both are fantastic and immaculate.

[–]Noturordinaryguy 1 point2 points ago

His robots are really cool. I especially like the more WW2 themed ones he does

[–]Anodesu 2 points3 points ago

I've appreciated his ability to go between sleek, futuristic robots to rough clunky panzer walkers, and then again to overly decayed terrifying dead things.

One of my favourite robots, oddly enough, was his scribe http://keiththompsonart.com/pages/scribe.html

as well as his geisha http://keiththompsonart.com/images/full/karakuri.jpg

His attention to detail is nothing short of amazing. His character designs blow me away as well.

[–]Noturordinaryguy 0 points1 point ago

He did a really good job of conveying the sleek porcelain skin of the automatons on the two you chose. I really like this one: http://keiththompsonart.com/pages/lineworker.html because of the way he combined rigid mechanical parts with organic flesh parts.

[–]Anodesu 1 point2 points ago

I'm assuming this was one of the WW2 robots you liked?

EDIT: (probably NSFW)

http://keiththompsonart.com/pages/leicheoberschutze.html

Again, same combination of rigidity and organic parts. I envy his ability to draw innards.

I should draw innards.

[–]cmhdave73 2 points3 points ago

I wish this was the top comment. This guy deserves his credit.

[–]tines 2 points3 points ago

His art's awesome and he's cool! I've spoken to him a few times and he's really friendly. He even let me go pick a print up at his house since he lives kind of nearby.

*edit: typo

[–]Noturordinaryguy 1 point2 points ago

Aww man, you lucky dog. I'm super jealous but that's awesome though.

[–]Lampjaw 24 points25 points ago

For those curious this is based on a pseudo steampunk dieselpunk book called Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. It takes place in an alternate universe where two groups called the Clankers (Dieselpunk) and the Darwinists (Fantasy style super beasties) are competing for dominance on a global scale. The trilogy is pretty good for young adult novels and I really recommend them for those into dieselpunk or alternate history.

[–]Anodesu 7 points8 points ago

I read the entire trilogy and enjoyed the fights immensely. I felt the trilogy ended on a very disappointing note, but the characters were most enjoyable throughout.

Also, according to my friends in the steampunk community, the correct term for the setting Leviathan is Dieselpunk, oddly enough. I guess the whole 'steam' thing focuses around victorian times, while dieselpunk is in the early 1900's.

In retrospect, that sounded extremely pretentious, but it was meant to be just a cool fact.

[–]Rude_Narwhal 2 points3 points ago

I felt the trilogy ended on a very disappointing note

Finally! Someone else admits it!

[–]Anodesu 2 points3 points ago

It bothered me! Did you see the extra illustration on Keith Thompson's site that didn't happen in the book? I had my hopes up for so long and thought I had spoiled something for myself...

Shit. i can't find the image! He took it down. From what it looked like, it was a rejected ending where Alek bursts into a wedding chapel in a walker to save Deryn from being married or something... Deryn is the groom, and the crowd's reactions are a mix of horror and facepalm.

[–]Rude_Narwhal 0 points1 point ago

What the hell!? WHY DON'T WE HAVE ANOTHER BOOK SCOTT WESTERFELD! YOU HAVE SOME EXPLAINING TO DO!

[–]Anodesu 2 points3 points ago

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2688/5768569665_c112cdae69.jpg

I found it!

Again, I think this ending was ultimately rejected and he changed it for the sake of how ridiculous the ending would have been, but honestly, I would have preferred it.

[–]Rude_Narwhal 1 point2 points ago

I wish we could at least get a short story that brings some closure to the story line. Wishful thinking, I suppose.

[–]Kaarboer 1 point2 points ago

I wanted to slap some sense into Alec.

[–]Lampjaw 0 points1 point ago

Also, according to my friends in the steampunk community, the correct term for the setting Leviathan is Dieselpunk, oddly enough. I guess the whole 'steam' thing focuses around victorian times, while dieselpunk is in the early 1900's.

No you're absolutely right. They really are completely different genres.

[–]lorkpoin 1 point2 points ago

If you are a pedant, yes they are.

[–]medlish 0 points1 point ago

Fuck me. Why didn't anyone tell me the third book was out? I totally forgot to check. Well, it's purchased now.

[–]pombaerik 22 points23 points ago

Why is Norway so derpy?

[–]VikingSlayer 46 points47 points ago

Norway and Sweden are trolls

[–]taeratrin 66 points67 points ago

Look a lot like penises to me.

[–]chosig 11 points12 points ago

My first thought was wow, Bauer drew penises... :P

[–]crazyowl 16 points17 points ago

Looks a bit like John Bauer trolls. Always loved those.

[–]onionhammer 6 points7 points ago

I like Theodor Kittelsen more ;P

[–]crazyowl 4 points5 points ago

Also very nice. Thanks for pointing that out to me. Haven't heard of him before.

[–]Casey77 0 points1 point ago

They remind me of the Mystics from The Dark Crystal

[–]tominsj 20 points21 points ago

Is Ireland shaving itself?

[–]flipmastertightness 9 points10 points ago

That is a shillelagh that is being held not a razor I suspect. It is a traditional Irish walking stick/weapon.

[–]Tayto2000 11 points12 points ago

I'm Irish and I've never actually seen one that wasn't for sale to tourists.

[–]Deddan 14 points15 points ago

Yeah, but you also didn't live in the 19th century.

[–]Tayto2000 13 points14 points ago

That's what you think.

[–]tominsj 0 points1 point ago

Haha, just the way it's being held looks odd to me.

[–]Daethz 29 points30 points ago

Italy wasn't neutral

[–]Jisaw 20 points21 points ago

I've never read Leviathan, but maybe Italy is represented as neutral snakes since they flip-flopped alliances just before the war started (IRL, at least). Explains the animal representation if not the color.

[–]firex726 9 points10 points ago

In the books, Italy is allied with the Darwinists.

[–]Ibuffel 7 points8 points ago

Nah Italy changed sides in 1915, not before the war.

[–]Jisaw 1 point2 points ago

Thanks. I have done my WWI coffee table book a great injustice. It's mostly just pictures, though.

[–]Bradsaw 13 points14 points ago

Map is labeled 1914, Italy was neutral in that year. Italy had been allied with the....erm...Clanker powers before the war but decided to stay out of the fighting when war broke out in 1914. It was not until 1915 when Italy decided to join the war, but this time on the side of the Darwinist powers.

[–]aluathays_clone 1 point2 points ago

Nice going Italy.

[–]doedipus 5 points6 points ago

italy is pretty useless when it comes to warfare.

[–]aluathays_clone 3 points4 points ago

Spaghetti guns!

[–]the-fritz 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. In 1915 most of the Austrian-Hungarian military was involved on the Balkans or Russia and the border with Italy was badly protected. After Italy declared war the local people simply started making a lot of camp fires on the mountains and thus the Italians believed they faced a superior army and waited for a month before launching an attack. When they attacked they still had a superiority in numbers of 3 to 1 and failed. Several times the Austrians fought off the Italians until in 1918 a new offensive with heavy French and British support managed to break the weakened Austrian lines and forced Austria-Hungary out of the war a week before Germany signed the armistice.

The Austrian-Hungarian military was also pretty bad.

[–]Turin_The_Mormegil 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, until near the end of the 19th century Italy hadn't been a unified polity- meaning no unified military tradition- since the Eastern Roman Empire lost control of Italy somewhere around the 6th-7th century.

[–]DatBanana1 5 points6 points ago

This is fantastic

[–]Drmrfreckles 31 points32 points ago

Has nothing to do with WWI its a from a book series which you have given no credit to in your title.

[–]minewalrus 4 points5 points ago

Well, the book is based around the first world war. It diverges completed from actual history, but is still based off the event nonetheless :)

[–]psychoticdream 1 point2 points ago

What book series.

[–]BaronThundergoose 8 points9 points ago

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld

[–]billyfalconer 1 point2 points ago

What about Hobbes? Can I publish a book and name it Finnegans Wake?

[–]VLDT 5 points6 points ago

Yes you can. There are thousands of different books that share titles dude.

[–]BaronThundergoose 1 point2 points ago

Hobbes' work is titled "Leviathan or The Matter, Forme and Power of a Common Wealth Ecclesiasticall and Civil"

[–]imthemostmodest 1 point2 points ago

Hobbes, baby, bubula, loved the book. Loved, loved, loved it. Every single treatise. It'll sell like you wouldn't believe. But the title.... You gotta listen to me about this title, baby...

[–]BaronThundergoose 0 points1 point ago

read this in an old timey-fast talkin voice, i dont know if that was intentional but i lawld

[–]WoollyManmoth 5 points6 points ago

Can't stop viewing. Portugal wants a piece of action. And I hear the weather in the Rabid Seal province of Russia is lovely this time of year.

[–]Stianos 0 points1 point ago

I'm about 90% sure that is a bear, ya know, because of the Russian's all being bears.

[–]WoollyManmoth 1 point2 points ago

The rabid seal province is north of the bear, east of the derp trolls. I get the bear reference, and it's an awesome depiction of what I imagine fighting WWI Russians would be like.

[–]ROYAL_CHAIR_FORCE 4 points5 points ago

Poor Serbia :(

[–]bureX 6 points7 points ago

In October 1915, Mackensen, in command of the newly formed Army Group Mackensen (Heeresgruppe Mackensen, which included the German 11th army, Austro-Hungarian 3rd army, and Bulgarian 1st army), led a renewed German-Austro-Hungarian-Bulgarian campaign against Serbia. The campaign finally crushed effective military resistance in Serbia but failed to destroy the Serbian army, which, though cut in half, managed to withdraw to Entente-held ports in Albania and, after recuperation and rearmament by the French, reentered fighting on the Macedonian front. During the fight for Belgrade, the troops of the Central Powers encountered a very stiff resistance, so Mackensen erected a monument to the Serbian soldiers who died defending Belgrade, saying, "We fought against an army that we have heard about only in fairy tales."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_von_Mackensen#Serbian_campaign

This guy erected a monument to the Serbian soldiers he was fighting against. That's quite some badassery right there.

[–]the-fritz 1 point2 points ago

The Serbian losses made up 8% of the total Entente military loses in WWI despite the small size of the Serbian military. They fought pretty hard and the Austro-Hungarian military was pretty bad. Only with German leadership (von Mackensen was German) they managed to conquer Serbia.

[–]bureX 1 point2 points ago

I think it has something to do with the "hair and the fox" principle:

Why does a rabbit run faster than a fox? Because while the fox is running for his dinner, the rabbit is running for his life.

Austria-Hungary was fighting a war which wasn't really that necessary, while Serbia was getting beaten on from all sides and fought cornered for it's life.

[–]the-fritz 1 point2 points ago

Austria-Hungary was in the state of dissolution. This was reflected in the military. And they never had a great military history to begin with.

[–]chriskilinc 3 points4 points ago

What's up with Scandinavia?

[–]mixmastermind 8 points9 points ago

[–]jostler57 4 points5 points ago

Norway looks an awful lot like a Mystic from The Dark Crystal movie.

[–]Plasmashark 2 points3 points ago

It's most likely based on the trolls from this famous Swedish painting:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:John_Bauer_1915.jpg

[–]jostler57 1 point2 points ago

Wow, great reference!

[–]perspicuus 3 points4 points ago

Why is Belgium some kind of ... toad?

[–]Li1quid 1 point2 points ago

Shouldn't Belgium be a waffle?

[–]FLYTEOFHEART 0 points1 point ago

Because in the book series this picture is from, the allys were in the business of genetically engineering animals to fight in the war. I guess belgium made battle toads?

[–]le_mirja 2 points3 points ago

Poor Serbia :(....

[–]Bellicapelli 1 point2 points ago

Oh my god I love this book so much!!

[–]Adeptmetal 1 point2 points ago

Amazing book series.

[–]KaoticGizmo 1 point2 points ago

I knew the names in this were familiar from some where! I happened to listen to this book on 'tape'. Narrator did a pretty good job on the voices. Pretty good book, but I love the whole steampunk thing.

[–]LessLikeYou 1 point2 points ago

Station?

[–]Steel40 1 point2 points ago

Alot of France.

[–]Sick_Science 1 point2 points ago

Scott Westerfeld's art is the reason I bought these books. The story was good but it was too short of a series. The last book was basically a cop out on the authors part.

[–]amuses 4 points5 points ago

Westerfeld wrote the book and essentially served as art director. This guy did the art: http://www.keiththompsonart.com/

[–]Sick_Science 1 point2 points ago

Right sorry, flip my comment. Bought it for Keith Thompson's art, dissappointed by Westerfield's writing.

[–]Scallywagger 1 point2 points ago

Northern Scandinavia looks like a couple of dicks.

[–]AndyC50 1 point2 points ago

that was a great book series last ones ending was utter bullshit though

[–]BlazeWindu 1 point2 points ago

Could someone explain the Darwinist/Clanker distinction?

[–]Lampjaw 2 points3 points ago

Darwanists genetically engineer beasts to fulfill needs such as giant flying monsters replace zepplins or special elephants act as giant cars. The Clankers are very steampunk and industrial. They rely on advanced mechanical things like giant walkers and typical automobiles.

[–]thelibrarina 0 points1 point ago

And in case you haven't seen the other comments, this is a map from Leviathan, a steampunk/genepunk WWI AU. And it is awesome.

[–]right_foot 1 point2 points ago

Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople.

[–]WARGLBARGL 1 point2 points ago

time to throw more books on the pile.

[–]Arknell 1 point2 points ago

As a swede, I object to being objectified as a 994 mile long phallus.

[–]nonesounworthy 1 point2 points ago

Thanks, I need a new wallpaper.

[–]pemattress 1 point2 points ago

go leviathan series !!

[–]eliwood5837 1 point2 points ago

Leviathan WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

[–]Venderpa 1 point2 points ago

Why are Sweden and Norway Penises?

[–]Dabamanos 1 point2 points ago

I swear, if this gets posted to /r/MapPorn one more time I-

Oh. /r/pics. Carry on.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]Kalesche 0 points1 point ago

So much penis in my peripheral vision...

[–]Charizardian 2 points3 points ago

France reminds me of Nigel Thornberry

[–]jostler57 1 point2 points ago

Sweden and Norway look like they're two giant dicks.

[–]Moofies 0 points1 point ago

I love this series. SO MUCH.

[–]petiteBear 0 points1 point ago

Good books!

[–]psychoticdream 1 point2 points ago

[–]FLYTEOFHEART 1 point2 points ago

The Leviathan series by scott westerfield.

[–]psychoticdream 0 points1 point ago

Thank you :)

[–]Donomark 0 points1 point ago

this is the map from the beginning of the book leviathon

[–]AWayOut 0 points1 point ago

Leviathan!!

[–]nightstrike 0 points1 point ago

God I love this series so much. I almost wish I hadn't given my copy of Leviathan away in an exchange, but someone new needed to be exposed to it.

[–]solire 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of Berserk for some reason.

[–]astrothug 0 points1 point ago

[–]Jojopolo 0 points1 point ago

I gotta say, I'm glad to finally see this series on here. One of my favorite modern ones.

[–]SilentExorcist 0 points1 point ago

Love that series.

[–]paulfp007 0 points1 point ago

wut

[–]Gardengnomes 0 points1 point ago

Mm, I loved this book.

[–]Dookiestain_LaFlair 0 points1 point ago

I've never read the series this is associated with, so can someone make a Game Of Thrones themed WWI map?

[–]calling_chem 0 points1 point ago

This is a repost, but I'm really glad I got to see it again :)

[–]dljens 0 points1 point ago

Norway and Sweden look like a doublepenis.

[–]ninjacarpet 0 points1 point ago

Italy wasn't neutral.

[–]VLDT 0 points1 point ago

It was until 1915.

[–]d_r0ck 0 points1 point ago

What are those big penises north of Germany doing???

[–]Donkey_Schlong 0 points1 point ago

That is fucking amazing.

[–]byliu88 0 points1 point ago

My language arts teacher from last year actually had the exact poster of that in her room.

[–]i_cant_draw_for_shit 0 points1 point ago

Norway always looks like a penis

[–]captain_zavec 0 points1 point ago

I loved that series, glad to see this in colour! (The version I had from the library just had the maps in black and white, and they were really dark and hard to read.)

[–]NeoRush 0 points1 point ago

As a dane, I am not very proud of how we are displayed on this photo.

[–]Psykes 0 points1 point ago

I am going to assume Sweden and Norway are trolling Europe!

Could also be seen as looking down on the countries fighting. Silly people.

[–]IDisappoint 0 points1 point ago

Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople!

[–]mudkipikachu 0 points1 point ago

Norway is a penis.

[–]Rbonne 0 points1 point ago

Ive read a book and it had this in it book was called "Leviathan"

[–]lendorav 0 points1 point ago

Estonia is a fly? okay.... Well atleast it's not a maggot,

[–]rafaelloaa 0 points1 point ago

Love that series, only problem was I got an advanced copy of the first book, so I had to wait a looong time until the sequel came out.

[–]IDontKnowWhattowrite 0 points1 point ago

...............

[–]Chem125 0 points1 point ago

If Scandinavia didn't look so phallic, I'd get that tattooed.

[–]OSLoT 0 points1 point ago

The Leviathan book series, are they worth reading? I really like steampunk but how is the book? what audience is it aimed for? From what I've heard and seen before it feels like Its for teenagers. I've read the eragon series though and that shit blew my fucking mind so Im definatly not against reading another teen book or whatever you may call it :)

[–]StaringAtPeople 0 points1 point ago

Why does Norway look like somekinda dick?

[–]Legitsu 0 points1 point ago

I made this my desktop background, amazing art.

[–]blazemore 0 points1 point ago

Why are the scandinavian countries penises?

[–]OGgarfield 0 points1 point ago

this is absolutely fantastic

[–]Minifjert 0 points1 point ago

Scandinavia got some weird stuff going on.

[–]Seafamboonie 0 points1 point ago

The art on the Scandinavian countries reminds me of a book I had read as a child: http://www.amazon.com/Hershel-Hanukkah-Goblins-Eric-Kimmel/dp/0823411311

Anyone else read this or know what I'm talking about? Anyone?

[–]downward_dogma 0 points1 point ago

Loved loved LOVED these books!

[–]Stinkynugs 0 points1 point ago

Sweden and Norway were trolls. lmao

[–]ccm8729 0 points1 point ago

so why is Italy listed as neutral?

[–]KingDogegg 0 points1 point ago

Nordic penis twins ;0)

[–]Hops_n_barley 0 points1 point ago

That would make a sick tattoo

[–]ys1qsved3 0 points1 point ago

Why are Norway and Sweden two large penises?

[–]Metroplex7 0 points1 point ago

Seeing this made my jaw drop and make a rainbow spill out. I'm saying this because I'm reading this book right now and I thought it a great coincidence that i find it here. Also, who wouldn't want to pilot a Stormwalker?

[–]A_DERPING_ULTRALISK 0 points1 point ago

I fucking hated how that series ended.
