    We have a shiba and a cat and they get along ok. The shiba is still a pup and she wants to play with the cat and the cat has no interest in playing with her, so they have face offs and the cat swats at her, but it doesn't really phase the shiba. If she catches the cat when she's on the move and hasn't noticed her, she will run the cat down, but it's playful, not aggressive. You can tell it frustrates the Shiba, she knows she's being ignored and when she chases the cat like that it's more of a "c'mon play with me" which usually gets her a paw to the face.

    There's really no guarantee as to what you'll get personality wise. If you visit shibainuforum.com you'll see that aggression can be a problem that is just inherent to some Shiba's, but IMO, if you train and socialize from day one, you should be ok, but again, no guarantee's. They are not like most dogs and you can't train them like you would a lot of breeds. They're more like training cats to be honest. If you can train a cat to not scratch, not get on counters and basically behave the way you want it too, then you can train a Shiba. If your cat runs your house, DO NOT get a Shiba! :)

    I have a Shiba/Basenji mix and she does not do well with my two cats. At all. We got the dog as a puppy, and her prey drive is too strong. She understands that she can't hurt them, but that wont stop her from getting too rough with them from time to time. The cats only enjoy swatting her when she is asleep and running away. I really think it is just the individual animals personalities... mine just don't mesh well!

    My sister has three cats and three dogs, one of which is a shiba. I was looking them up recently to try to convince my roommate to get one, theyre fine with cats but they are pretty alpha so they are better with beta dogs.

    Koi in Japan are very domesticated. They are the main fish put in ponds and gardens. They are fed by people so when they see any one approach, they expect to be fed and feel safe around surfacers.

    When I used to have koi, they used to swim so fast toward me when they saw me, I swear I thought if I put my hand in the water, they'd try to eat it. I could never put snails in with them, because they'd be eaten within an hour. I never thought of them as domesticated and friendly, more like viscious hungry beasts.

    Small correction for you-- they are only fed by passers by in many, many public places, and are otherwise starving, which is why they're jumping out of the water in expectation of food. Koi that are not starving do not do that.

    But as a whole, they are unshy around people. They don't normally bunch up like crazy like that (which you might be right, they could be really hungry on the picture) but they definitely approach unafraid and casual starving or not.

    I don't know...I know both breeds. Shiba's are usually tiny, or at least more tiny than the dog in the photo. Plus, I've never seen a shiba that blond. All who I've seen were red, redish, or brindle.

    I'm not trying to be a prick about it...but the name or origin of the breed has little to do with the location of the pic. I've owned a Norwegian Buhund, a German Shepherd, an Irish Wolfhound and a Pug (Chinese origin), yet haven't been to any of those countries. Plus, I've seen lots of Koi in ponds in various park and tourist traps in my own country, which is not Asian at all. So...picture hosted on Japanese website doesn't mean picture of dog breed that originated in Japan.

    Not saying you're wrong...just that the logic doesn't necessarily add up.
