Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I've said it before, I'll say it again when this photo crops up again, even in the leftmost photo, you'd have to be incapable of spatial understanding to believe the gun is pointed at his head.

...or you think the US uses 30mm cannons as small arms.

[–]beachjustice 2 points3 points ago

I think the US uses 30mm cannons as small arms. 'merica

[–]lordeirias 1 point2 points ago

Does where the gun is pointed really matter that much? Gun in photo + guy on ground in that pose does not seem like as pleasant a time as either of the other crop jobs.

Example: walk into a conference room with a bunch of people sitting on the ground looking worn out; if the one guy standing up is holding a ball I assume it is one of those stupid group exercises, if they are holding a gun I am thinking more "hostage situation". It doesn't matter if the gun is aimed at one person's head or into the air... it is probably a worse situation for the people on the ground (though "team building" is it's own form of hell).

Before I get argued with a point like "your conference room could be a weapon's seminar... blah blah", yes but on quick glance HOLY SHIT WHY DOES THAT GUY HAVE A GUN. The crop job on the left shows some poor guy on the ground while someone circles them with a gun.

Uh, yeah, but I don't think you have people in military uniforms in your office. The gun isn't the only thing in the picture. If you see a man in a military uniform holding a gun, I don't think your first thought it "OH SHIT HOSTAGE SITUATION".

Ditto cops and secret service agents.

No, I don't think hostage... my post was about how adding a gun (no matter where it is pointed) changes how a photo is read. There is a man in military uniform in some form of distress (tired or in pain) whose head is level with a downward pointing gun. I think POW. The distress with NO ONE HELPING (you know, the part cropped out) puts a negative vibe on the whole thing. Is it possible that it is a guy sitting down to take a break on a march while his buddy stands guard nearby? Yes, but the distress on his face with a disembodied gun (so we can't see if the uniform matches) leaves a negative vibe.

The key component in all versions is the man in uniform is distressed. On the left we have no positive spin: the gun is not attached to someone wearing the same uniform and there is no one helping the distressed soldier. The middle picture has both positive and negative: still have the gun but also have someone helping the soldier. It has more positive going for it because even if the guy is a POW at least someone is caring for him in his distressed state. The last picture drops the bad and just has someone caring for another person, no risk of gunfire within the picture.

We could analyze the picture to bits but the point is the first crop job leaves the instant eye capture of gun + distressed soldier. For the average person this reads as the gun CAUSING the distress in some way.

i kindof feel like your missing the point of the picture

[–]rasputine -1 points0 points ago

I understand the point, these cropped edits do not make the point very well, unless the point is "the person who crops it as on the left is shitty at their job"

[–]hellshot8[S] 3 points4 points ago

I think it makes the point well enough for people who dont have the idea that this can even be done. Its not about the specific photo, its about the idea thats behind the photo.

[–]rasputine -1 points0 points ago

It's just as artificial as the photos/tactics it's condemning. Which is a silly way to condemn them.

[–]hellshot8[S] 2 points3 points ago

its not condemning anything, again its just bringing up the idea that photo cropping can change the mood of a photo. Its you that seems to be condemning, lol

[–]Usakar -2 points-1 points ago

[–]hellshot8[S] 1 point2 points ago

Now thats just mean :c

[–]tinpanallegory 0 points1 point ago

So in other words, pointing out and demonstrating the artificiality of something is a silly way to condemn it.

I'm not sure if I agree with you on this.

[–]rasputine 0 points1 point ago

Doing it shittily is the issue I'm having with it. This isn't representative of the thing they're condemning. It's a shitty approximation. The real thing is a whole hell of a lot more convincing.

[–]Not_the_brightest 0 points1 point ago

I was going to say this.

That gun is way in the foreground. Nowhere near the guys head.

[–]A_Happy_Penguin 0 points1 point ago

Are there any examples of this? I would love to see some more, it's interesting to see that something as simple as cropping can change a photo's whole meaning.

[–]CrysDawn -1 points0 points ago

That certainly changes the meaning.

[–]hellshot8[S] -2 points-1 points ago

It really shows that you cant look at a photo on a news site etc and think your seeing everything there is to see

[–]CrysDawn 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. That's why I never use one source for my news. I read as much as I can about a story/issue before I take a stance, and I try to read opinions from every side of an argument.

[–]slightlyamused1 -1 points0 points ago

That's amazing.

[–]hellshot8[S] -2 points-1 points ago

glad you think so
