A Serbian Film had a sense of humor about it, it was satire about how extreme taste and opinion can get. i thought it was an almost playful exploration of human degradation through a fiction. i didn't think it took itself too seriously(newborn porn, har har). but Salò is almost an historical account of libertinism, the whole thing feels much stranger and is more alien. they're both about the same thing essentially, but a serbian film has some familiar movie elements. family relationships, bad cops, tough guys, a story of righteous anger and retribution. there's a start middle and conclusion, nice and neat. both movies violated me visually, but Salò was just so relentlessly weird conceptually. at least in a Serbian film you could sympathise with the protagonist, get behind him, be rooting for him. Salò... well... just left me feeling adrift and kind of lost.

it's true, on the surface of it it takes no time at all for the average person to be disgusted at a list of a serbian films theme's, they're shocking. i think Salò is a larger deviation from our comfort zones, more disturbing for it's apparent meaninglessness and directionless perversion.

i think they're both amazing films and should be seen by more people.
