From my understanding it's because a person in a car w/o a seatbelt can bounce around on the inside of the vehicle during a rollover and smash into everyone else. Whereas on a bike you're really only going to hurt yourself (by not wearing a brain-bucket).

I see that point. I do understand the whole people-can-choose-their-own-fate argument when it comes to helmet and seatbelt laws, but I've always thought that they should be there for the safety of the vehicle operator and passengers. Being a scooter owner has shown me how dangerous everyone is on the road, but here in Washington, helmets are required, so it feels normal to me. I don't leave without a helmet. I feel safe and law abiding.

I also came from Florida where there's a seatbelt law but no helmet law. That always confused me.

I'm in Canada, where seatbelts and helmets are mandatory. I've always felt that they shouldn't be but I would use them anyway. I just think the government should only make laws to protect us from each other, not ourselves.
