This happened on 287E near NYC. The truck was parked on the side of the road and apparently the dude driving the vette had a heart attack... That *may be his arm and he did die.

Edit: I don't think the papers actually published whether or not that was his arm.

They test the blood for alcohol so they can know what caused the wreck. When there is no alcohol, there is some sort of chemical that appears in your bloodstream only after a heart attack. That is how they know for sure that you had a heart attack when you go to the hospital and not just severe chest pains. They probably collected a blood sample on scene immediately.

Yeah. only when the circumstances warrant a further look, otherwise the already overwhelmed coroners offices would be even more packed with bodies than they already are.

If they are able to figure out the cause of death pretty easily they won't look more, unless the police/courts/family asks for them to.

Friday, July 29, 2005 FRANKLIN LAKES - A Westchester County man died Thursday afternoon in a crash on Route 287.

Joseph Gianelli, 58 of Irvington, N.Y., was pronounced dead at the scene after his Chevrolet Corvette struck the rear of a tractor-trailer at about 1 p.m., near milepost 65, state police said.

The truck, operated by Clouis Oquinn Jr., 52, of Virginia, was parked on a northbound shoulder when the Corvette plowed into it. Oquinn was not injured, officials said.

There is a specific part of the trailer that is supposed to prevent death by decapitation in the event of an accident. It's called the "Mansfield bar" named after Jayne Mansfield who died in a similar accident.

This trailer appears to have one but it was still too high for a Corvette.

A co-worker of mine has a side hobby? / business? of rebuilding totalled Porsche 911s. There's apparently a lot of them that get wrecked by guys who don't know how to handle them. He sells the resulting franken-porsches on salvage title. I don't know if he makes enough to cover his expenses, but he rebuilds them, drives them around for a couple months, then sells them off.

Depends on how upstanding your buddy is. You can definitely make good money though. Pick up a few that have been wrecked, a couple with serious hail damage, one or two that have gone swimming, and a couple whose owners have managed to blow the engine, and you can build a few nice running examples that will sell at a bit below market. If you're unscrupulous, they'll sell at market.

This pisses me off. There was no need for this guy to die. Even if he WAS having a heart attack at the time.

In New Zealand, trucks and tractor trailers must have a collapsing bumper bar at the rear of trucks and trailers TO PREVENT CARS GOING UNDERNEATH THEM. They must withstand a 100km/h impact from the rear without the car being destroyed.

Failing to make this a law in the US will, I am sure, result in the deaths of hundreds of people every single year.

But we are talking about a country which is so stupid that in many states it does not even require its citizens to protect themselves with seatbelts.

Liberty and freedom. The US offers many freedoms. Among those including the freedom to do stupid things as long as they generally don't hurt anyone else. It is not the job of the government to keep you safe from yourself. That being said, wearing seatbelts is still a law in every state.
