When I first moved out of home, I didn't cook red meat. It was due in part to my not being able to do it very well, and my flatmate-come-girlfriend not really eating it very often. So I ate a shit-load of chicken.

About a year later, my sister had a birthday party and a friend of the family provided lamb-on-a-spit. I had an orgasm in my mouth! Thereafter I learned how to cook a steak!

I've heard arguments against that include health concerns (animals and feed is pumped up with hormones and preservatives, which we then ingest), as well as the inhumanity of the modern slaughterhouse and abominable living conditions of the animals for the duration of their lives. I don't like those things, either, but there's something about a seared slab of succulent steak on a sizzling buttery plate that just makes me say, yes, yes, YESSS!!!

I was thinking, "do you often get home cooked meals, like, handed to you in this way, aamanderp?" Which made me jealous, and then I got deep and went all red nose day and thought "It's the African's innit?" Which is my new company, and why I thought of that tastefully articulate but ultimately deeply tragicomic, (ironic, really innit?) joke there. Because our social misstep: "never having tried Ethiopian food, a bad review of our character, a sign of having had a limited range of experience in the atmosphere of other cultures" is ultimately an enormous show of wealth and freedom. The Ethiopian who is currently starving but would otherwise have "totally been a redditor," will die soon, and her options for karma whoring a health problem on /r/sucksihavecancergonewild are nil.

Enough bean and rice for several meals is maybe a couple bucks. Flour is dirt cheap. Farmers markets can be dirt cheap for tons of veggies. You could make dozens of different types of meals with those ingredients. And if you REALLY can't afford a dollar or two per meal there are food banks everywhere to help you if you're in a spot. Money very rarely is a good reason to eat crap.

Also, a bag of ramen with a hard boiled egg and some green onions can feel like a home cooked meal. Well that might be cutting it close a little but I hope you got the gist.

Someone who says that doesn't know how to shop. There are all kinds of ways to make a meal that are much cheaper than any other alternative you can come across (except maybe only ramen, no fast food/eating out).

Google it, there are several guides for doing it.
