Facial recognition is one of the very interesting subroutines of consciousness IMO. We certainly have great ability to recognize many different people and emotions without much conscious effort on our part. To me this means we have some pretty badass algorithms running in the background. Some sort of spurious false positive in this case, try to pick out the features on the dog that accounted for what we saw. (imo somebody with photoshop could do something interesting but i am clearly not in a state)

edit i think i know why. In the thumbnail it looks like a rightside up dog with its tongue hanging out imo at first glance.

My guess would be symmetry. The one large dark spot and single long ear hanging down are mistaken for something else at first. The mind expects to see certain things and fills in the blanks. With this picture, the subroutines' assumptions are wrong and we all got a momentary dose of WTF is that?!
