Since there's a bunch of guesses as to what this plane is, AND the image is a repost, I'll dig through my comment history to find what I posted.

Dig dig dig dig dig dig (it's a ways back) dig dig dig dig dig dig (fuck, I'm getting a tired) dig dig dig

Okay, the consensus reached is that this is an IJN Aichi E13A "Jake" reconnaissance floatplane, based on the forward location of the wings in relation the engine, the extended cockpit, the wing shape, and the fact that there were over 1,400 of the things built. And this time I didn't have to spend 20 minutes staring at pictures of aircraft!!

EDIT: My spelling is like a sausage-fest party; too many "he's."

[–]TFRAIZ 32 points33 points ago

What kind of a boat is that?

[–]Osiris32 57 points58 points ago

A sailboat.

[–]loki010 20 points21 points ago

It's a schooner.

[–]SailingSeasofRum 11 points12 points ago

It is a sloop with a Marconi rig.

[–]Lowgunner 43 points44 points ago

You dumb bastard. It's not a schooner it's a sailboat.

[–]poignard 17 points18 points ago

You know what? There is no Easter Bunny! Over there, that's just a guy in a suit!

[–]The_Painted_Man 6 points7 points ago

why would you do that?!?

[–]Jayx 2 points3 points ago

upvotes to everyone for awesome mallrats chain

[–]phidelta355 -2 points-1 points ago

Fear not, fellow believers, at least we still have the tooth fairy.

[–]h0de -2 points-1 points ago

The what?

[–]Legacy406 3 points4 points ago

A schooner is a sailboat, jackass!

[–]serpentjaguar 1 point2 points ago

Pretty sure that's the joke.

[–]Legacy406 0 points1 point ago

I guess you haven't seen the movie.

[–]serpentjaguar 0 points1 point ago

Oh great, I miss another movie reference on Reddit. Story of my life.

[–]LOLSTRALIA 1 point2 points ago

Yes please.

[–]biggreen10 0 points1 point ago

Why are people upvoting this? It is wrong. This boat has one mast, by definition a schooner has at least 2.

[–]Dashukta 6 points7 points ago

They're trying to make a Mallrats joke. The fact that you're correct and a schooner has at least 2 masts with the foremast being no taller than the others and the one in the picture clearly has only a single mast won't stop them.

It is a sloop, for those interested. More specifically, it is a Marconi(also called Bermuda)-rigged. sloop.

[–]ChrisAshtear 2 points3 points ago

to be fair, mallrats was great.

[–]Dashukta 0 points1 point ago

It certainly is entertaining.

[–]_argoplix 0 points1 point ago

with a roller furling jib

[–]loki010 0 points1 point ago

[–]SuperShamou 1 point2 points ago

I must be getting bad at seeing those things, I can't see the sailboat.

[–]cqxray 0 points1 point ago

It's a sloop.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Best comment ever...

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

Right. A sailboat. See, it's a boat, with a sail. Hence, sailboat.

[–]TFRAIZ 0 points1 point ago

Heyooooooo

[–]Blue_Grass 0 points1 point ago

She be sailing sloop or maybe some sort of cutter, ship mate. Hard to tell till she unfurls but I'd say a sloop.

[–]futuramaguy07 2 points3 points ago

Good guy redditor, right here!

[–]h0de 0 points1 point ago

Well done.

[–]47wd21 0 points1 point ago

hat tip to you sir.

[–]TheDark1 0 points1 point ago

If it is a floatplane, why is it under the water?

[–]Osiris32 1 point2 points ago

I believe the rapid application of small pieces of lead and fast-deflagration chemicals was involved.

[–]Benemon 0 points1 point ago

"some inconsiderate fuck shot it down" would've sufficed.

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

Meh, I like mine. Sounds all sciency.

[–]Benemon 0 points1 point ago

Who am I to argue with cold, hard, science? Carry on sir!

[–]moo_moose 0 points1 point ago

quick acting lead poisoning to the pilots cranial cavity

[–]gmharryc 0 points1 point ago

Followed by excessive hemorrhaging and a rapid descent to a an altitude below sea level.

[–]bravo_sierra 7 points8 points ago

[–]Judgment 0 points1 point ago

Thanks!

[–]Eurydemus 12 points13 points ago

It's sad that this isn't OC :(

This is creepy, yet beautiful at the same time.

[–]one_of_reddit 11 points12 points ago

seeing anything under water always freaks me out for some reason..

[–]ToiletTroubles 2 points3 points ago

must take you back to that bath incident...

[–]letsgoiowa 2 points3 points ago

Same here! It's just so...eerily peaceful...it feels like you'll be brutally killed if you dare move it.

[–]beckyruxpin 1 point2 points ago

Confirmation I was never alone on this sentiment.

[–]faleboat 1 point2 points ago

I came looking for you. Anytime I see or even just know there is something underneath me in water, I freak the fuck out. It's a weird phobia. Even looking at this picture of this was enough to get a bit of a chill from me. Beautiful picture. Freaks my shit out.

[–]tahoehockeyfreak 4 points5 points ago

I'm Curious to see how many wrecks like this are so clearly visible and not at great depths. Looks like an awesome dive site.

[–]windsostrange 2 points3 points ago

It really happened.

[–]chicagogam 2 points3 points ago

ooh i got that creepy 'seeing stuff under water' feeling that i read about in another reddit.

[–]moo_moose 6 points7 points ago

That actually looks closer to a tbf avenger because of the squared wings, great picture though! Where was this taken? http://www.the-blueprints.com/blueprints-depot-restricted/ww2planes/ww2-grumman/grumman_tbf_1c_avenger-26303.jpg

[–]revbobdobbs 2 points3 points ago

Possibly. Close match. Are the wings a little to broad perhaps?

(I know nothing about military aircraft, but felt like doing a quick comparison with an image editor)

[–]exxocet 4 points5 points ago

probably an aichi e13a 'jake' going from the 3 seater float plane description from original. it might even be the one near Kavieng Harbor, im sure from this shot you could estimate size by finding how long Erich Wilts' yacht "Freydis" is/(was) somewhere online

[–]aletoledo 1 point2 points ago

How do you explain the squared wingtips then?

[–]snotrokit 0 points1 point ago

The wingtips were more than likely fabric, or a separate piece that rotted off long ago.

[–]mookiemookie 0 points1 point ago

http://www.j-aircraft.com/gallery/navy/e13a_gallery_files/e13a-mervin_brewer_01.jpg

They folded up so as to be able to fit more planes in a carrier's hangars.

[–]aletoledo 0 points1 point ago

Those look like more than just the tip.

[–]abravefight 0 points1 point ago

hungry fish

[–]exxocet 0 points1 point ago

I propose that the wingtips and ailerons are missing or folded, giving it a more square appearance than usual. Perhaps something like this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I think it looks like a zero. The avenger sat a couple people and had a much larger fuselage. It's hard to tell, but using the zodiac on the sailboat for size reference, I think it would be closer to a Japanese zero.

But you are right, they do have similar wings and profiles from above, and it's hard to tell size in this picture. It also kind of looks like it might be a double seater, which would lead my to believe it was an avenger. Hard to tell!

[–]VentureBrosef 1 point2 points ago

There are pictures somewhere of people diving in the cockpit. I saw this picture posted on reddit a few months back and they had the whole series with it.

[–]Kukymc 1 point2 points ago

This is in Truk Lagoon.

[–]sigaven 1 point2 points ago

Wow. To think that there was a dogfight or battleship around this very spot 67+ years ago.

Okay that's assuming the plane didn't drift...but whatever it still sounded nice.

[–]Citisol 0 points1 point ago

That's what makes history so interesting, especially when visiting sites.

[–]newsome51 1 point2 points ago

How deep is it in the water? That is amazing...

[–]betarded 1 point2 points ago

Are the pilot's corpses still in the plane? If this is just discovered, I'd assume there'd be some grizzly shit in there.

[–]BlackNyellow 1 point2 points ago

Does anybody else find that really creepy. If you threw me in that water i would not be a fan.

[–]CrackItJack 1 point2 points ago

If this sort of thing is your cup of tea, you should check out Truk (Chuuk) Lagoon:

Chuuk Atoll, (also Known as Truk) in the Caroline Islands is infamous for its giant lagoon. The lagoon is the final resting place for more than 100 ships, planes and submarines - the legacy of a fierce World War II battle between the Imperial Japanese Fleet and Allied carrier planes. The lagoon has been declared an underwater museum. Souvenir taking of relics from the area are prohibited by law.

The majority of the wrecks lie off DubIon, Eten, Fefan and Uman Islands and represent the largest naval loss in history. Their cargoes of tanks, trucks, airplanes, mines, bombs, machine gun bullets and thousands of other artefacts including beautiful china are there still to be explored. The warm, tropical waters and prolific marine life has transformed the wrecks into artificial reefs and beautiful coral gardens.

[–]Rampage771 1 point2 points ago

How the fuck did you get up there?

[–]Movinmeat 1 point2 points ago

Seeing that from the vantage point of the boats mast gives me vertigo. Remember, the minimal rocking of the boat even in smooth water is multiplied by the height of the mast.

Also, cheap to post and not give credit to photographer. Down vote.

[–]_Aldous_ 4 points5 points ago

Not a Zero, because of wing profile. Not an Avenger as others have stated because it is much too small. Avengers are very large airplanes.

My guess would be an F4F- Wildcat. The later Hellcat is also a possibility, but I think the wings on the hellcat are too narrow.

[–]Aavagadrro 2 points3 points ago

Fuselage is far too thin to be a Grumman aircraft.

[–]revbobdobbs 2 points3 points ago

[–]nonAMfootball -1 points0 points ago

I believe that of those four it resembles the wildcat because the angle of the leading edge of the wings is the most perpendicular to the fuselage of the aircraft than the others.

[–]guitarnoir -1 points0 points ago

Pretty-much my guess. Looked like a Grumman product to me.

[–]canuckgal 2 points3 points ago

Check out pearl harbor on google maps, you can see a bunch of sunken ships through the water just like this, it's very cool

[–]pacman404 1 point2 points ago

really? im looking that up right now, cool

edit: couldnt find a thing :(

[–]pacman404 1 point2 points ago

awesome

[–]RayLomas 4 points5 points ago

My guess is A6M Zero:

[–]CakeSmasher 2 points3 points ago

It looks to me as if the flaps have fallen off.

[–]aletoledo 0 points1 point ago

Someone above said that it was a jake, but I agree with you instead because of the folding wingtips. I don't believe a jake had folding wingtips.

Of course this is working from the assumption that it's japanese.

[–]edounn 0 points1 point ago

i think this is the one

[–]annoying_guy_w_guns 0 points1 point ago

yeah, I agree with you on this one because of the fallen off wingtips.

[–]guitarnoir 0 points1 point ago

Although I stated elsewhere that my first impression was that it wasn't Japanese, and looked like a Grumman fighter, I now proclaim my own stupitiy, and have come-over to the Japanese Zero side. I did quite a bit of research, and your argument best fits the clues from the OP's pic.

Here's a good shot of a square wing-tipped zero. Although the guns are fuselage-mounted (and I would guess ammo is fuselage stored?), you can see under-wing bomb-mounts that could have been torn-away in a sea-crash, resulting in those panels being opened-up on the OP's aircraft.

Ki-61b.

[–]RayLomas 0 points1 point ago

I think Hien had its cockpit moved further away from the engine - the pictured aircraft's cockpit starts almost immediately after wings, while in Kawasaki Hien it starts at ~ 30% of wing's length - http://ww2drawings.jexiste.fr/Images/2-Airplanes/Axis/3-Japan/01-Fighters/Ki61-Ib-Hien/p2.jpg

[–]eS_Reid 0 points1 point ago

Wow what an awesome shot, how does this get 1600 down votes, I don't understand?

[–]Dr_Sandvich 0 points1 point ago

Now who would leave a perfectly good plane in the South Pacific ocean?

[–]CPTkeyes317 0 points1 point ago

Even more impressive is the USS Arizona which is like this, only huge

[–]Pazda 0 points1 point ago

This belongs in r/historyporn or r/abandonedporn

[–]M0b1u5 0 points1 point ago

If you can afford a boat like that YOU CAN AFFORD A CAMERA THAT TAKES OK PHOTOS.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

That isn't a Japaneese plane! That's Emilia Earheart's plane!

[–]Citisol 0 points1 point ago

Does OP have the lat/long of this site?

[–]insulting_faggot 0 points1 point ago

Wonder if there are any remains of the pilot in the cockpit.

[–]iamagainstit 0 points1 point ago

Hey kids, want to see a dead body?

[–]argh_minecraft 0 points1 point ago

Is there a market for finding old ww2 planes/tanks etc? I have an interesting group of friends who would do remarkably well at this.

[–]moneymizzlle 0 points1 point ago

Must be one of those japanese "sea-ros"

[–]inefficientmarkets 0 points1 point ago

Its Palau. I'm going there this summer.

[–]Bluedemonfox 0 points1 point ago

I bet it went kamikaze on some poor whale or dolphins.

[–]Thinkcali 0 points1 point ago

Kamikaze FAIL!

[–]K931SAR 0 points1 point ago

::shudder::

[–]orkid68 0 points1 point ago

Get down from there this instant.

[–]xmasskull 0 points1 point ago

Aprox. how deep is the plane & did you dive it?Awesome pic.

[–]Apostolate 18 points19 points ago

Op did not have anything to do with this my naive friend.

[–]xmasskull 7 points8 points ago

Damn,fooled again.

[–]Njuul 0 points1 point ago

Don't go near it man, radiation will fuck you up. Black eyes though, that's a bonus (with a small side-effect of being possessed by an unknown alien entity.)

[–]Citisol 3 points4 points ago

Radiation from a fighter? ಠ_ಠ

[–]Njuul 0 points1 point ago

It's a referen... Nevermind...

[–]8bitmage 0 points1 point ago

Wrecks like like this are one of the myriad reasons I want to get certified to go Scuba diving.

[–]ferrari4ari 0 points1 point ago

That awkward moment when a Kamikaze misses the boat

[–]guntycankles 0 points1 point ago

What a great shot of this!!

[–]cyborgdonkey3000 -1 points0 points ago

sunken japanese pixel conglomeration.

[–]question_all_the_thi -1 points0 points ago

It's usually not a good idea to go diving there. Sunken war planes or ships may have unexploded bombs in them.

Bombs during WWII had mechanical triggers and seawater leakage may have corroded some parts, so they could go off at any disturbance.

[–]bewk -1 points0 points ago

interesting, but oddly "playing it safe" from a distance on your part.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]Schrikbarend -1 points0 points ago

is this your yacht? looks amazing

[–]Eurydemus 2 points3 points ago

This is practically a stock image by now. Look it up on google.

[–]XTC-FTW -2 points-1 points ago

We need a follow up of you diving and a picture of this beauty under water!

[–]Unrelated_Pun_Girl -2 points-1 points ago

Man... that plane crash must have been Cat-Astrophic!

[–]PseudoKhan -1 points0 points ago

Not surprising

[–]ConformOrElse -1 points0 points ago

I thought it was shopped at first

[–]supraspinatus -1 points0 points ago

Coral Sea?

[–]redditjerk -1 points0 points ago

Beautiful - dead jap under the ocean.

[–]cy10p3s -2 points-1 points ago

i would so like to jump on this WWII plane karma bandwagon but i have none

[–]fallopian_swim_team -2 points-1 points ago

YOU FORGOT TO PUT DOWN THE LANDING GEAR!!

[–]MAJORpaiynne -3 points-2 points ago

I thought this would get ZERO up votes. That's the type of plane in the picture.

[–]Moomasterq -1 points0 points ago

Plane or not, that water looks really nice to swim in. Then to snorkel with that plane in there? That's gotta be sweet.
