It's a fantastic road to drive, especially when the weather is horrible.

This bridge was on the front page a couple of months back and a guy posted an awesome dash cam video where the driver drove around this place during a storm. It was really beautiful and awesome.

I don't have the link anymore but maybe someone else can remember the name of that youtube video? :)

I wonder if people in this area do this on a regular basis or if their cars just start to rust earlier.

[–]Heffalumpen 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Norwegian cars rust very early. Some car companies disassemble cars when they arrive in Norway to give them extra anti-rust coating. The salt water in that video is one thing, but we also salt the roads in the winter to melt ice.

The shot at 2:30 really puts that tall arch into a whole new perspective. That's more like a rollercoaster than a road.

That road has a broken yellow divider line. Does that mean you can overtake slow drivers?

[–]usernameblank 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It sounds like horrible weather is quite common for this area. In the six years it took to complete this road, the area was hit with TWELVE hurricanes.

[–]thenewaddition 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Collection of tolls was scheduled to run for 15 years, but by June 1999 the road was paid off and the toll removed.

Stay awesome Norway.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We usually only have cat1-2 hurricanes here so it sounds worse than it actually is. A cat1 is barely even mentioned in the news because all constructions is built to withstand the weather. A little further north a section of the roof on a sports hall got ripped off during a hurricane a while back and there was a media frenzy for days.

[–]usernameblank 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That makes more sense. As a person who has never lived anywhere near a coast, I hear "hurricane" and immediately think DEATH AND DESTRUCTION!!!!

[–]dj_bizarro 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone who has lived near Galveston, TX since I was in 3rd grade I never think of anything more than strong winds and rain, the local media however handles it very differently.

[–]lifeless2011 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well.. its not really a hurricane as its not a tropical storm. But they are remnants of hurricanes which can be just as strong.

[–]blendik 59 points60 points ago

IMO that's when it is the best! It's really fascinating when the waves crush up on land

[–]Ceejae 44 points45 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's what he/she said.

Edit: I was pointing out to blendik that absolutelynothing had said they enjoy driving on the road when the weather is bad, as it seemed to me that blendik had misinterpreted it. I wasn't using that tired old joke.

[–]Khiva 149 points150 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For anyone who didn't understand the edit:

First poster said the drive was "fantastic" in bad weather.

Second poster seemed to think that first poster meant to say that such a drive was unpleasant, and corrected him by saying that it was actually a great drive in bad weather.

Third poster explained to the second poster that the first poster probably was, in fact, probably saying that the drive was great.

Fourth poster has a huge penis.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

It really depends. Living in Norway does generally leave you with less disposable income.

/someone who used to live in Norway

[–]Khiva 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Adjusting by median personal disposable income places Norway third across all countries, but you've also got to account for Norway having the second highest prices for consumer goods in Europe. I don't know if this accounts for your generally elevated Scandinavian taxes but I imagine that takes an ample bite as well.

In other news, the US comes out comfortably ahead of any other country on measures of mean and median disposable income, but I wonder how fast an American would be downvoted for crowing "I'm rich, bitch!"

[–]awwwwwwsick 2 points3 points ago

Your comment has stimulated me to research the bridge and as a result, I have learnt something very interesting today. If you interested in the building and engineering of the bridge, Here it is.

But about your question,

The trench-type tunnels which are constructed under each of the two major ship channels are identical in construction details.

So I believe it goes underwater to allow ships to still travel through the Chesapeake Channel.

This is the point where I think I let someone else drive. I don't think that getting all of my driving instruction from Jason Statham was a good idea anymore...

Who wants to go for a ride?!

Norway is one of those countries I imagine to be very advanced and clean compared to mine. I'd love to visit some day. Btw Flunk, a favourite band from mine is from Norway.

I see your highway in Norway and raise you the Pedraplen a Cayo Santa Maria in Cuba. 50 km highway on the ocean. http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&client=safari&biw=320&bih=416&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=pedraplen+cayo+santa+maria+sky+view&btnG=&mvs=0#p=1

It seems like something out of a Miyazaki movie, kart racer, or Sonic game.

of course there are ads that use this highway too Even though its an ad, the last two shots are worth watching. Apparently the whole spot was meant to be outside the car, but the weather the week of the shoot was so bad they only got to use the helicopters for an afternoon.
