I originally thought this Impala (a medium sized antelope from the Zulu word for "gazelle") was stuffed, until I did some research. It looked odd how there was web on his eye and I doubted a spider could manage to build such an intricate web on an animal like this. I was wrong.

"Frank Solomon took the photo of the Impala in Kruger National Park, South Africa, which is home to around 110,000 of the small antelope.

'This is the first time I have ever seen something like this, and I have spent most of my life in the bush.

'For me this was better than seeing a herd of elephant or a leopard in a tree because it was a truly one-off moment.

'When the friend I was with pointed it out all I could see was the Impala. I thought my friend was joking but upon closer inspection I noticed the web.

'I feel it is definitely one for the record books and a sight I will never forget.'"

[–]Winga 13 points14 points ago

It's great to look through the comments and find some actual information without having to give up and try tineye. Thank you!

[–]Ezili 16 points17 points ago

Daily Mail.

Actual Information.

Does Not Computer.

[–]Phage0070 11 points12 points ago

Ok, so impala ewes have no horns obviously, because they are for sexual display and competition. This one hasn't used his horns in so long that a web has been constructed over them along with his face.

This is obviously a "forever alone" impala.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

[–]DeusFerreus 6 points7 points ago

I guess the impala simply ran into the spiderweb.

[–]forandre 8 points9 points ago

I think you are right - Otherwise, there would be no web on the face and the ears of the Impala.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

a medium sized antelope

So, it's a Nopelope?

[–]OutaTowner 11 points12 points ago

More like antenope

[–]vodkamartini[!] 5 points6 points ago

"This Impala antelope has become a home for a contented spider. The insect appears to have settled in the web after it became caught between the antlers of the small antelope as it walked through a national park.

TIL spiders are insects

[–]FourthReichsFuhrer 162 points163 points ago

Awesome example of symbiosis!

[–]libertasmens 148 points149 points ago

If the web is strong enough, he can just run full speed and the spider gets fuckloads of food.

[–]l-rs2 10 points11 points ago

That's a Disney/Pixar story right there. Don't know what favors the spider could do in return. Maybe just be funny, like Mike Wazowski from Monsters, Inc.

[–]venicello 12 points13 points ago

Bugs are fucking irritating. Having a Spiderbro up there to keep the flies off you would be a godsend.

[–]mrupyours13 15 points16 points ago

Something we humans can take inspiration from

[–]Erilaz 15 points16 points ago

Trawling can be contrasted with trolling, where baited fishing lines instead of trawls are drawn through the water.

The double meaning there was not lost on me.

[–]SirNoName 11 points12 points ago

...
Where did you think the Internet term came from...

[–]lsguk 1 point2 points ago

Maybe the spider is "trolling".

[–]acog 2 points3 points ago

Plus, as we all know, it's the female lions that do most of the hunting. But they'll take one look at the webalope, shriek, and run the other way. It's a win-win!

[–]c-mason3 2 points3 points ago

This reminded me of the Far Side Cartoon... (the one with the spiders, and their web at the bottom of the playground slide.)

Here's an image of it. When I ran a google image search for the cartoon, I got this link, which pointed to it... Not my post, but I thought I should throw that out there for full disclosure.

[–]RPrevolution 8 points9 points ago

What dies the antelope get out of it?

[–]Kabynbojski 19 points20 points ago

A post on Reddit.

[–]mr17five 2 points3 points ago

Sustenance for karma; an even exchange.

[–]piv0t 3 points4 points ago

Less bugs bothering his face

[–]GrannyBacon81 2 points3 points ago

Fashion statement

[–]username103 1 point2 points ago

he looks tougher?

[–]cosmo_nicholson 38 points39 points ago

but if you look closely, you'll see that a) there are bits of spiderweb also on his face, and b) the web, if it had indeed been constructed from scratch on the antlers, is strangely built. normally they make concentric circles built around strings going inwards like this, but this one is all higgledy piggledy, like this. Also there's no spider on the web, how did it get down?

These factors make me think that the antelope simply walked through an existing spiderweb.

[–]Zanxe 5 points6 points ago

You can kinda see a brown shape in the centre lower bit of the web. Could be the spider. Just saying.

[–]Erilaz 6 points7 points ago

While orb web spiders build the type of web you're describing, others do not. There are many different types of spider webs.

[–]cosmo_nicholson 1 point2 points ago

wowee, the more you know

i've just only ever seen that kind of web.

[–]Bickus 6 points7 points ago

Up vote for being right, yet buried.

[–]Trapped_in_Reddit 82 points83 points ago

Yep, and more specifically commensalism.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]TryingtoSavetheWorld 61 points62 points ago

Many flies pester the animal, so the spider builds web, lots of flies to trap and eat, animal isn't pestered by flies.

[–]option_i 16 points17 points ago

This should be a Pokemon.

[–]Thorns 39 points40 points ago

I choose you Spideer! What's this? Spideer is evolving into Arachnalope?!?

[–]option_i 4 points5 points ago

You are a genius.

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points ago

very fucking nice...

[–]FindsTheBrightSide 87 points88 points ago

As someone with a biology degree who worked with an arachnologist, this is utter bullshit. A singular spider wouldn't cause any decrease in the number of flies that pester the animal. For each that it took, another fly would show up, and spiders don't eat that much or that often to make a notable difference in the life of the animal.

[–]WoollyMittens 31 points32 points ago

Why says anything about the spider eating the flies? Merely catching them is sufficient.

[–]FindsTheBrightSide 3 points4 points ago

Then allow me to rephrase: the spider wouldn't catch enough flies to make an impact in the day to day life of the animal. Flies are too abundant for the spider to make a dent.

[–]Cheeseball701 15 points16 points ago

So multiple spiders!?!

[–]FindsTheBrightSide 43 points44 points ago

A select few do share webs, but I still doubt it. This spider is most likely the animal version of a freeloader, benefiting from the animal, but not providing a service in return.

[–]Cheeseball701 10 points11 points ago

Yeah, I just looked up the "commensalism" mentioned in one of the parent comments.

[–]FindsTheBrightSide 7 points8 points ago

Yeah, I'm reading these other comments now. Surprisingly, Trapped_in_Reddit is actually making sense and not spewing gifs or memes for once.

[–]EvanMacIan 9 points10 points ago

Actually, TiR tends to be one of the better reddit stars in terms of comment content. It's just that memes and gifs tend to get more karma, and therefore float to the top.

[–]SisRob 5 points6 points ago

another sign for multiple-personalities theory...

[–]ethidium-bromide 5 points6 points ago

Fucking Communists.

[–]amaefm 1 point2 points ago

Isn't it somewhat a parasite at that point? If there is no benefit to the antelope, I can't imagine it quite enjoys a face and ears full of fucking web.

[–]IDe- 6 points7 points ago

Parasitism is a type of non mutual relationship between organisms of different species where one organism, the parasite, benefits at the expense of the other, the host.

I don't think that the bold part applies here as there is little to no harm to the "host".

[–]saranowitz 2 points3 points ago

Covering the eyes of the animal and possibly impacting the attractiveness of the animal to potential mates (assuming fear of spiders is an instinctual mammalian trait) would qualify as harm.

[–]ethidium-bromide 2 points3 points ago

This is actually completely wrong. Every fly that encounters this animal has an increased chance of being killed outright, which appropriately decreases the average number of flies that are "pestering" the animal. This is exactly how evolution works - on every single level of selection.

[–]cuntarsetits 6 points7 points ago

As someone with two biological degrees, I can confirm that you are quite correct. I have no clue how FindsTheBrightSide can think it to be otherwise.

In his model there must always be a constant number of flies bothering an animal, with each bothersome fly being immediately replaced by one from a reserve pool of flies on standby who sense the death and select one of their number to move in.

[–]TellThemYutesItsOver 4 points5 points ago

As someone with three biological degrees, two eggs and a ruler, this is utter bullshit.

[–]Kalmah666 6 points7 points ago

As someone with 500 biological degrees, two eggs, a ruler, a toilet plunger and duct tape I call this bullshit, bullshit

[–]steviesteveo12 1 point2 points ago

[–]FindsTheBrightSide 1 point2 points ago

Go out into a forest in the summer. There are always an abundance of flies, gnats, and other flying pests to annoy you and any other animal. I've slain innumerable flying pests while doing research, not even to make a dent in their numbers.

[–]JakeThePom 1 point2 points ago

You're not looking at the bright side here.

[–]Trapped_in_Reddit 13 points14 points ago

I would doubt the web would cause a statistically significant decrease in the overall number of flies that pester the antelope, which is why I said commensalism and not mutualism. There are more than enough flies around to compensate for the abilities of one spider and its web.

[–]Trapped_in_Reddit 11 points12 points ago

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm not an arachnologist

[–]JollyOldBogan 11 points12 points ago

You're here forever. It might be a good idea to brush up on the topic. You'll become a hero.

[–]Trapped_in_Reddit 8 points9 points ago

There are more than 40,000 spider species. That's an awfully vague set of questions to ask when I don't know more about the spider in question. Not all spiders built webs, but of those that do, many built in different ways in different amounts of time.

[–]FindsTheBrightSide 2 points3 points ago

Wow, this is surprisingly accurate coming from you.

[–]Trapped_in_Reddit 8 points9 points ago

Et tu, FindsTheBrightSide?

[–]the_second 3 points4 points ago

Wouldn't a symbiosis mean that the antelope also profits from this?

[–]Fuentidos 2 points3 points ago

Simply amazing!

[–]magnetic_couch 2 points3 points ago

If you look at how there is broken webbing on its ears and face, it's clear that it just ran through a spider web. It's not symbiosis, it's just the aftermath of an accidental collision.

[–]ToadFoster 1 point2 points ago

It's stuffed.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I think this little guy should play around in the river for a while..

[–]RobotPhoto 22 points23 points ago

If you think about it, that's the best thing that could have happened to that antelope. How many times have you seen a discovery documentary where the animals are pissed and swatting at flies? This thing will never have to worry about it again.

[–]Desolator001 10 points11 points ago

Antelopes can't swat at flies.

[–]Kaninchen95 10 points11 points ago

They can try.

[–]DumbUsername420 3 points4 points ago

Well then it's a good thing he has that web to catch them in.

[–]NineteenPercent 65 points66 points ago

It's a nopelope!

[–]rumckle 32 points33 points ago

The first thing I thought was an antenope.

[–]kael13 5 points6 points ago

A yep?

[–]rumckle 1 point2 points ago

That would be an antinope, an antenope is a before-nope

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ante

[–]EpilepticWaffle 30 points31 points ago

that spider is a freaking genius

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points ago

his web site is spider-eating optimized

[–]john2kxx 1 point2 points ago

Why would he eat other spiders?

[–]BaronVonWeiss 313 points314 points ago

Reddits arachnophobia is seriously getting old...

[–]beamoflaser 164 points165 points ago

This is what reddit is for though, running shit right into the ground.

[–]eggylisk 24 points25 points ago

im guessing liberal college student is at the top of the list

[–]masterwit 23 points24 points ago

Now that is rather assuming of you. We take a non-partisan approach and run everything into the ground - liberal college student or conservative gun-welding [stereotype here] redneck.

Just don't touch the cats.

[–]Mysteriousdoor 5 points6 points ago

We need a niave young republican to balance out the liberal college student.

[–]agentmuu 13 points14 points ago

Whoever it is, they'll be really brave. Super brave.

[–]Mysteriousdoor 10 points11 points ago

A true american hero. Dressed in a pollo with a ronald reagen poster in the background, he fearlessly recites the rhetoric of the Republican party in how we should leave everything up to the individual states, abolish the department of education, and help out all the business by abolishing all taxes. He also strongly supports the military, but feels himself too good to join.

[–]nonesuchplace 15 points16 points ago

Dressed in a chicken?

[–]Vallam 26 points27 points ago

As a mod of /r/spiders, thank you.

[–]Richeh 20 points21 points ago

Arse spiders?

[–]achshar 3 points4 points ago

NO

[–]DoctorQualified 1 point2 points ago

does complicated warding ritual to hide this comment from Relevant_Rule_34

[–]wtmh 9 points10 points ago

/r/spiders here. Sewing myself to these coat tails.

[–]LonelyNixon 3 points4 points ago

I have been saying it for ages. Every since that post about the guy who burned down his house to kill a spider reddit has had this competition of who can be the biggest pussy.

Last time I commented on the spider link novelty I got a bunch of 'hey I really am an arracnophobe' responses to which I said it was unlikely all of reddit was to which they expressed that it was plausible. I just gave up Arguing and downvoted all I could. Rage comics eventually got a lot of hate so I am hoping this nope shit will die too.

On a side note I am not even some big tough guy who is immune to spiders. If a big one is crawling on me expect me to jump like a fucking girl, but a picture or on my wall? Come the Fuck on.

[–]timmeh87 6 points7 points ago

Ive been downvoting this shit for years but it just keeps coming back. Much like a swarm of spiders.

[–]zephyy 18 points19 points ago

Listen I've hated for spiders for 19 years now and it ain't going away

[–]JoeChieftw 3 points4 points ago

DAE Nope?

[–]norwegianengineering 4 points5 points ago

I'm so happy I have arms.

[–]OMROKER 8 points9 points ago

When you party.. Don't be the first to pass out...

[–]thegreenbabe 4 points5 points ago

All I see is an antelope with a mustache..

[–]eat-your-corn-syrup 1 point2 points ago

and an artsy hat.

[–]amaunet 3 points4 points ago

Can't find the actual pic, but it reminds me of this.

[–]i_drink_vino 3 points4 points ago

AntelNOPE

[–]marcik89 19 points20 points ago

I could be totally wrong, but that looks like a stuffed antelope to me.

[–]Erzsabet 7 points8 points ago

Especially since there are webs over the eyes as well. I highly doubt that animal is still alive.

[–]Minotaur_in_house 18 points19 points ago

"You thought this was a antelope? Nope, Chuck Testa."

Edit: Corrected by Zigzagg321 Edit 2: Return of fail. Corrected by Surround5ound

[–]zigzagg321 7 points8 points ago

That's Testa. Nice try though, honestly.

[–]Surround5ound 6 points7 points ago

I think you mean "Chuck Testa" not "Check Testa" ;)

[–]Minotaur_in_house 1 point2 points ago

How to feel like a fool. >>.

Thanks for the heads up.

[–]Saifire18 5 points6 points ago

Dreamcatcher deer just loves picking up widows, don't judge him.

[–]stonedchao 5 points6 points ago

thats like the smartest spider ever. bugs flock around stinky mammals and when the dumb deer horned-demon hybrid gallops through the meadows it'll definitely snag some of the fatter dumber bugs.

[–]Darkshiv 2 points3 points ago

True Spider Bro!

[–]Kronos37 2 points3 points ago

in our society, we would have called that fashion.

[–]ScotteToHotte 2 points3 points ago

I have a raging nopler right now.

[–]LesEnfantsTerribles 2 points3 points ago

The arachnoid overlords are happy with this picture

[–]EltaninAntenna 2 points3 points ago

I also have an irrational fear of antelopes, so they put a NOPE on my NOPE so that I can NOPE while I NOPE. FML.

[–]EliteDonkey 2 points3 points ago

That's pretty cool. It won't have to worry with flies buzzing around its head.

[–]Mogese 2 points3 points ago

looks like a dream catcher :D

[–]twistmental 2 points3 points ago

Sometimes my nightmares leak, my apologies reddit.

[–]diamondium 2 points3 points ago

More like spiderlers, am I right? Like, antlers, but not.
I'm going to show myself out now...

[–]atxpyro 2 points3 points ago

retired spider, living and traveling in the motor home

[–]Suppilovahvero 2 points3 points ago

And not a single buck was given that day.

[–]KellyCommaRoy 8 points9 points ago

Ignorance is bliss. If I had to have a spider with me all the time, I'd want it in a web between my antlers.

[–]SocialAlchemist 1 point2 points ago

My head is itchy now...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

RUN FASTER.

[–]Phoequinox 1 point2 points ago

It's not a pest, it's an infestation statement.

[–]BrendanT01 1 point2 points ago

A more appropriate title might have been ante-nope.

[–]OmEgah15 1 point2 points ago

This is how you know this Antelope isn't getting any. Hasn't fought with another male for a females attention in so long that he has a spider in his antlers.

[–]tookthecannoli 1 point2 points ago

Tennis Racket.

[–]MsManifesto 1 point2 points ago

I didn't look hard at all, but I didn't see anyone say the antelope may have ran through a web. It's on his face, too.

[–]EltaninAntenna 1 point2 points ago

Maybe it's one seriously ambitious spider...

[–]rageth 1 point2 points ago

My head is the eye of Sauron. Your argument is invalid.

[–]DannyDollar 1 point2 points ago

I heeheehee'd :)

[–]Peninja 1 point2 points ago

Nice. but I would have gone with Antinope

[–]MrJMaxted0291 1 point2 points ago

Those eyes are actually just black pits where all the spider's babies live.

[–]choiroffury 1 point2 points ago

He's old.

[–]avon22889 1 point2 points ago

Thats symbiosis at its finest, the spider has a home and protection, the deer has a dream catcher

[–]spgtothemax 1 point2 points ago

The things is actually dead, spiders are in it's brain controlling it while watching us

[–]theyseemetr0lling 1 point2 points ago

Anyone see this and think it was fucking cool?

[–]gnimsh 1 point2 points ago

I would run through trees until the leaves get all the webs off.

[–]Pennis 1 point2 points ago

One could say that this is an antiNOPE... harhar

[–]SaintKairu 1 point2 points ago

That is one fancy Dream-Catcher.

[–]mcrackin 1 point2 points ago

what a gay looking deer.

[–]LizzyBreal 1 point2 points ago

The title of this link made me giggle.

[–]tcole6 1 point2 points ago

Take a bath hippie!

[–]snnysummers 1 point2 points ago

nopalope

[–]john2kxx 1 point2 points ago

It needs to simply jump into a lake. Of fire.

[–]ViolentEastCoastCity 1 point2 points ago

This video is relevant. Perhaps.

[–]TangoDown13 1 point2 points ago

I believe these are referred to as the rare and mysterious "Nopalope."

[–]gingervitish 1 point2 points ago

I read the title as a combination of nope and propeller. I came expecting a spider helicopter, was very, very disappointed.

[–]TrebeksUpperLIp 1 point2 points ago

Nopelopes.

[–]bigbluemofo 1 point2 points ago

Oh look, it's a nightmare catcher.

[–]freakedoutbunny 1 point2 points ago

Nope-alope!

[–]Flavor_Enhanced 1 point2 points ago

Looks like it may have walked through a web. Also symbiosis IIRC would only be true if the antelope needed the spider to survive.

[–]oliverMcMayonnaise 1 point2 points ago

Spideer.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Smartest spider ever. "Instead of waiting for flies to run into my web, I shall run my web into the flies."

[–]axnjackson11 1 point2 points ago

since the web also is also on his face, i'm going to assume he walked through the web that was most likely on a tree or bush.

[–]Dashzz 1 point2 points ago

You know actually has happened. That spider is using the gazelle as its host. It is living with it peacefully now but soon it will lay it's eggs inside its head. Then the baby spiders will start to eat it from the inside. When the gazelle dies the spiders will eat out the eyes and swarm out to finish their meal.

[–]WomenzRightsLoL 1 point2 points ago

Fake antelope, doesn't count

[–]Architeuthosaurus 1 point2 points ago

Those are actually horns, not antlers. Horns are permanent structures, whereas antlers are shed annually and regrown, usually for breeding season.

[–]LETSBACON 1 point2 points ago

i would've set my face on fire

[–]Jctaylor113 1 point2 points ago

Nopelope?

[–]DignifiedDingo 0 points1 point ago

That's some last defense stuff right there. Spider attacks if it's host goes down. It's like dropping a grenade in CoD after death.

[–]purpleOranges 0 points1 point ago

You just know his web is going to get knocked down, but if the spider thinks the short term risk is worth it for the immediate benefit - then he's fucking genius.

If he's there for the long haul, then well mister spider is a fucking dumbass.

[–]tylervan 0 points1 point ago

I thought Thidwick was a moose?

[–]GuitarWizard90 0 points1 point ago

Now that is a smart spider.

[–]ILikeYouLikeMe 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure that antelope just got his face jizzed on by a giant spider...

[–]authentic_trust_me 0 points1 point ago

what's with all these spiders deep into the night.

[–]WoollyMittens 0 points1 point ago

This happens every day of summer when I walk out my door in the morning. Spiders are dicks.

[–]st_hill 0 points1 point ago

Kids, this is what happens when you don't bathe for weeks

[–]toolatetolive 0 points1 point ago

Is that an antenope?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It has been possessed by an evil spirit of the forest. Now it's in the process of metamorphosis. It will slowly take the form the spirit desired in the beginning.

No no, just got here. Take your time..

[–]Dujen 0 points1 point ago

Clever title. To me, who thinks spiders are nifty little machines ... if not a bit wicked, this seems like it'd work out pretty swell. F*ck mosquitoes and other flying bloodsuckers.

[–]Lazigold 0 points1 point ago

Buck got his own personal dream-catcher.
