This is what happens whenever i try to hit on girls anywhere :(

[–]meno123 64 points65 points ago

This gif is engineering.

[–]killdie 20 points21 points ago

i came here to find you

[–]DiamENT 1 point2 points ago

We were on the same journey!

[–]jstyer 9 points10 points ago

A gif has never made me laugh more than the one that you have just bestowed upon me.

[–]FortunaExSanguine 90 points91 points ago

4:1? You lucky bastard.

[–]sequentialsilence 2 points3 points ago

We sit at about 40:1

An excerpt from Urban Dictionary

The best college in the world to get an education in the entertainment industry , however seeing quality pussy on campus is about as rare as seeing a bald eagle.

[–]MargaretCharles 249 points250 points ago

My best friend went to a similar school. I'm butchering it, but I think she had a saying like, "[Engineering School]: where the ugly girls find boyfriends and the single men become curious."

[–]arunv 460 points461 points ago

The saying among girls was: "where the odds are good, but the goods are odd"

[–]NegativeFriction 148 points149 points ago

Some girls wrote that on a whiteboard on their floor my first day at engineering school. Five minutes later, there was another message reading,

"The odds are bad and the goods are worse-- shut the fuck up! -- The Guys"

[–]ThaScoopALoop 82 points83 points ago

We had: _____________ Where the girls are like parking spaces. They are either handicapped or taken

[–]muldoonx9 93 points94 points ago

Handicapped, taken, or someone just pulled out.

[–]provokedcarp 13 points14 points ago

"The girls are here for their MRS degrees."

God I hate going to Tech.

[–]Zhoulibo 2 points3 points ago

Go apologize to the Shaft at once!

[–]TheExtremistModerate 1 point2 points ago

Which tech? Virginia Tech? Gerorgia Tech? Rensselaer Polytech?

There are a lot of colleges with tech in their names.

[–]lostboyz 10 points11 points ago

Too far away, cost money, or illegal. There might be a few more.

Also there was "there are a ton of girls in rolla, just not a lot of them"

[–]ducttapetricorn 1 point2 points ago

Hahaha, I have a friend who transfered from Missouri S&T, where according to him, "a 5 was a 10".

[–]rshawgo 1 point2 points ago

That does about sum it up.
"Rolla, where the men are men, and so are the women"

[–]Darth_InvadeHer[S] 16 points17 points ago

Yeah that pretty much sums up my attitude towards that saying.

What I don't get is that a lot of guys here use that saying and think it is hilarious. Like they enjoy the fact that the girls are basically calling them losers.

[–]SucculentSoap 50 points51 points ago

Being odd doesn't make you a loser.

[–]IHaveAScatFetishAMA 22 points23 points ago

Tell that to my parents.

[–]itskieran 25 points26 points ago

Dear Mr and Mrs IHaveAScatFetish,

Being odd does not make you a looser, please take your son/daughter out for steak then give him/her $100.

Yours Sincerly,
itskieran

Edit: should be loser, not looser

[–]Lambpanties 1 point2 points ago

Considering the scat fetish, I'd say that correction was optional.

[–]ThisOpenFist 8 points9 points ago

These aren't grown men we're talking about.

[–]GTUD 10 points11 points ago

[–]DoubleXX 8 points9 points ago

Oh god, please not the GTGs.

[–]MagnaCarterGT 1 point2 points ago

As far as I'm concerned they made "M-train" and "The Perfect Option", and that was it.

[–]provokedcarp 1 point2 points ago

The redhead in the middle at 1:30 was my RA a couple years ago.

She was very nice and didn't care that we drank and smoked.

[–]TheGreatandMightyMe 52 points53 points ago

We used to say, "Girls are like parking spaces. All the good one are taken, and the rest are handicapped". We were classy. And single. Obviously.

[–]RentalGuy204 53 points54 points ago

"you don't lose your girlfriend, you just lose your turn"

[–]Hookerface 17 points18 points ago

Oh my god. This... is so incredibly true. And terrible.

[–]Wayne_Bruce 5 points6 points ago

I love that this comes from "RentalGuy"

[–]Demo_Model 13 points14 points ago

I remember hearing one about finding a wife along the lines of:

"Wives are like domain names, all the good ones are taken unless you buy from some obscure country"

Probably better worded though.

Edit: Spelling

[–]flossette 24 points25 points ago

1st year eng - 'these girls are damn ugly'

2nd year eng - 'hey, they're not that bad...'

3rd year eng - 'damn, these girls are hot!'

4th year eng - 'these guys are damn ugly'

[–]anxiousalpaca 13 points14 points ago

Pray that you don't have to redo some courses.. 5th year gets weird.

[–]7RED7 130 points131 points ago

4:1?! You must be really heavy on chemical engineering there. My MechEng Entry class had maybe 4-6 women out of 100+. Chemical engineering has quite a few more. EE's and CS's usually travel in packs of 5-6 with one woman.

I work in the biomedical dept. and every day I walk through most of the bottom floor of the bio building (where most of the class labs are) to get to the elevator (yes, I'm a lazy ass, but it's 4 floors up so sue me), and whenever classes are in session I could swear there are about 3 dudes in a 30 person lab for the biology and biochem classes. I really don't know why they are so drawn to biology, but that's where they all go (well, that and medical).

TL:DR, Boys, look into going into Biology, BioChem, or maybe even ChemEng. Trust me. Also, my friend I work with in the research lab has mentioned that it is somewhat common for biology students to skip Masters and just go into PhD (and not sure if that was just here experience here and at her previous college though).

[–]Deepdriller 43 points44 points ago

My microbiology lab class 3 dudes 27 girls. Most of my pre-med classes were similar.

[–]Darth_InvadeHer[S] 160 points161 points ago

My vet school has around a 20:1 girl to guy ratio.

[–]limpits 21 points22 points ago

This is why I always went to the library in the vet building to study or do group projects. I also took a flower arranging class my last semester (97girls and 3guys) - awesome.

[–]SetToGeek 28 points29 points ago

... flower arranging class? That exists? Oh wondrous 1 credit courses...

[–]meno123 14 points15 points ago

Also gives you mad bouquet creation skills.

and we all know that's the cheapest ticket to the land of back rubs.

[–]tomtomlol 1 point2 points ago

The flower arranging course we have is 3 credit hours! It also has a $200 lab fee...

[–]alcakd 1 point2 points ago

As someone who went into engineering instead of bio...

ivemadeahugemistake.jpg

[–]RepublicanShredder 7 points8 points ago

Agreed, from my experience (ChemE) the majority of the women in engineering go into ChemE or BME. Winner of least women in a program is EE, where my EE friend says there's 3 that he recognizes in his classes.

Surprisingly, there's a lot of attractive women in the chemistry department, so I don't think it's just bio they are drawn to.

[–]7RED7 1 point2 points ago

Well I said BIO because that's from personal experience on my campus. We have a dedicated engineering building (way too old, way to hot [who knew computers actually generate a BTU load eh?], yellowish tan wallpaper, and depressing lighting), with the bio building (where I work) as a next door neighbor, and a large new building that's mostly just classrooms for engineering/bio-x/medical/whatever the graduate students from India happen to be studying at the time. I can't speak for the more general science (chem, phys, astro, meteo, geo, etc.) depts. as they are mostly halfway across campus and I'm usually in-and-out as fast as possible when I go there (very lecture focused. independent learner no like lecture) so I don't pay much attention to the population there. ...and then you have Morton (the math building) where souls go to die and the dust from decaying mathematicians always sets off my allergies. I could swear they think that if they turn up the heat enough they can incubate mathematical breakthroughs. I don't think anyone is there by choice.

[–]Sleeping_Ugly_ 1 point2 points ago

We have to stay shaved and pretty, you never know when there will be a chemical spill and you'll need to use the safety shower.

[–]blacklist_member 8 points9 points ago

I've had my doubts on what branch of engineering to choose next year... I guess i have my answer now.

[–]MudvayneMW 6 points7 points ago

I doubled in mechanical and aerospace engineering.

I believe that our freshman ratio was 4-1, and that the graduation ratio was 15:1

[–]Icovada 5 points6 points ago

My MechEng Entry class had maybe 4-6 women out of 100+

We had 5 out of 240

[–]ryumast3r 1 point2 points ago

Sounds about right. I was at 4:140 or so.

Edit: M.E.

[–]OldLeopardSkin 2 points3 points ago

1:35

[–]Crytone 4 points5 points ago

I have to concur. ChemE was where all the girls were (all the good looking girls from the common first year went into ChemE). I was in EE myself and my biggest complaint was the girl to guy ratio- likely close to 1 girl for every 10 guys! Lots of girls in Environmental Eng too...

[–]Stembio 5 points6 points ago

Funny, over here in biology we all frequently lament not going into engineering, as we gaze out on the over-saturated job market and shit pay.

(Also yes, we generally just go straight into a PhD, but the PhD programmed is designed to be a minimum of 6 years, so it is just folding a 2 years masters into the PhD program. You don't actually save any time)

[–]sher7ock 2 points3 points ago

Can I really sue you for taking the elevator? SEE YOU IN COURT!

[–]krugmik 2 points3 points ago

As a guy going to college for Chemical Engineering in the fall: thank you for these kind words of hope. I'll be sure to take plenty of biology classes

[–]Jdawg_sk1 1 point2 points ago

I agree chem eng is where the ladies are so much so that at the U of S we refer to it as fem eng.

[–]EpoxyD 1 point2 points ago

So that about a 20:1 ratio if I'm correct? About the same over here... I guess OP doesn't have it so bad after all ^

[–]Isentrope 1 point2 points ago

Yup it was a sliding scale at my school too. EE and CS had very few (and mostly Indian and a couple Asian girls at most), Civil and Mech had a nontrivial number (I'd guess 10-20% of the class?), Chem E was almost 60/40 or 55/45, and the vast majority of Bio E was girls.

I've heard from my school that they do not even offer Masters degrees in certain Biology majors. This may be why they just go straight for a PhD. Bio also tends to be top heavy, so most people go for a PhD if they choose not to/can't get into med/pharm/dent/etc. and get some kind of postdoc for the chance to make about as much as a junior or mid level engineer in most disciplines (not sure about Bio E though, still don't know what they do).

[–]itskieran 1 point2 points ago

The CS department here has 4 girls in it's third year. At least one of them used to be a dude (i've also heard it's actually two, but there's been no confirmation)

[–]OverlordSoS 1 point2 points ago

Two of my friends are ChemEngineering, and they're is hardly any women in their classes at all, definitely less than 4:1.

[–]The_Hope_89 1 point2 points ago

Yeah i came here to say this as well... I literally might have 1 girl in any of my classes like... Once a semester... maybe...

[–]CrayolaS7 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I'm doing mech and it's like 8:1-10:1 by my estimate. Anything "bio" girls seem to love as far as science goes.

[–]fireball_73 1 point2 points ago

I did my undergrad in Physics and Astronomy. I noticed most of the girls dropped physics after a couple of years to do pure maths. Don't have a clue why!

[–]jyoon86 1 point2 points ago

I am currently taking Microbiology right now. It is a small class (30 people). There are five or six guys including myself and the rest are girls.

[–]JoeChieftw 1 point2 points ago

I'm glad I chose ChemE.

[–]that_thing_you_do 1 point2 points ago

I remember starting a new quarter, getting to class a few minutes early, seeing about 50% of my class fill up with girls. I knew right away I was in the wrong class room. It wasn't even an overwhelming majority of girls (I was supposed to be in Math for Engineers, but was accidentally in Math for Life Science majors). So sad that that was my indicator...

[–]ktollens 1 point2 points ago

I came here to also say that I'm in EE and we have maybe 4-5 girls in my classes and I do believe they are all taken except for the deaf one but I haven't seen her lately since she is on her work term. ChemE has the most girls I think or CivE.

[–]LNMagic 73 points74 points ago

4:1 ratio? Man, talk about an engineering taco fest!

[–]Darth_InvadeHer[S] 32 points33 points ago

You have to understand that that ratio includes girls who are "technically" girls

[–]Navevan 45 points46 points ago

Dude, most places are at best 15:1
And that's counting the...people that could really go either way

[–]UrbtoOSU 1 point2 points ago

It depends on what engineering it is. My Mechanical Engineering department is about what you said, maybe even a bit of a higher ratio. But upon taking an Integrated Systems Engineering technical elective this quarter I've found they have around a 2:1 ratio.

[–]CrayonOfDoom 1 point2 points ago

CS here. Definitely 15:1 at best. At best meaning there were never more than 2 girls in any class I took for the last years of college.

[–]enjoyingthe 11 points12 points ago

What does "'technically' girls" mean?

[–]poopermacho 32 points33 points ago

Ugly

[–]mrsmudgey 21 points22 points ago

or robots

[–]TrolleyPower 19 points20 points ago

And guys wonder why there aren't more girls in Engineering.

[–]7RED7 2 points3 points ago

Oh, we know why. Few people really take the effort to either get them interested in it, or give them the necessary stimulus early on to want to think about things more systematically at a young age. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if you want your daughter to have a more intuitive understand of physics or engineering when she grows up, buy her some damn Legos (and not the crappy ones that come in like 3 pre-shaped pieces these days, get the basic blocks and the technic[if they're still called that] stuff) and books that have a lot of visual descriptions of how things work.

[–]poopermacho 1 point2 points ago

OK? It's the truth. Same can be said for a lot of the guys in engineering.

[–]redmeanshelp 21 points22 points ago

Probably girls that have learned that if they act "girly" then boys don't pay attention to their ideas.

[–]cultured_banana_slug 1 point2 points ago

Or girls that know if they dress up and do their makeup, they get swarmed like the last cupcake at an AA meeting.

[–]bobbo_ 1 point2 points ago

Girls possessing looks and/or mannerisms which do not correspond with the generally accepted societal view of a "normal" girl, I guess.

[–]Bloodypalace 0 points1 point ago

girls that have no feminine traits. The only kind of girls you can find in engineering classes.

[–]TrolleyPower 10 points11 points ago

Stay classy.

[–]OCedHrt 1 point2 points ago

It's like 7:1 in Silicon Valley, out of school.

[–]E_N_Turnip 44 points45 points ago

You're lucky, we had a 20:1 ratio. Their motto was: "Women in engineering - yes, we do exist."

[–]7RED7 15 points16 points ago

Quite a lot of effort seems to go into promoting awareness of that.

You could just buy them some legos when they're a kid, but wutevs.

[–]lifejolt 2 points3 points ago

NO, DOLLS ONLY!!

[–]MathewMurdock 21 points22 points ago

Psychology is the opposite, but all of the women are either married, in a committed relationship, or crazy.

[–]CrayolaS7 2 points3 points ago

My girlfriend does marketing (another female heavy major, at least at my our university) but she said to me: "I think so many girls do psych because they want to know why they're crazy."

[–]7RED7 1 point2 points ago

On the other hand, I think a lot of us guys go into engineering because women tell us we don't understand what a "moment" is.

[–]Schinanigan 36 points37 points ago

lol, Colorado School of mines?

[–]samphillips9 6 points7 points ago

Boulder's just 25 miles up the road at least...

[–]Lord-Longbottom 5 points6 points ago

[–]Darth_InvadeHer[S] 6 points7 points ago

so close! New Mexico Tech (institute of mining and technology)

[–]mballs13 2 points3 points ago

Greetings from UNM!

[–]Darth_InvadeHer[S] 2 points3 points ago

Haha nice NM pride. The best part about tech is that we dont have any sports teams so there are no rivalries!

Oh, actually thats the worst part...

Enjoy your social life :(

[–]The-Jerkbag 1 point2 points ago

MST feels your pain...

[–]madachup 9 points10 points ago

Ahhh Mines, where the women were like parking spaces, All the good ones are already taken and the rest are handicapped or way the hell out there

[–]TrolleyPower 10 points11 points ago

Well that's only the sixth time I've read that in this thread.

[–]Et--Cetera 1 point2 points ago

Came here to say this, I'm the 1, this happens all the time.

[–]Bike1894 1 point2 points ago

Yep...i'm going there next fall...joy

[–]odms 51 points52 points ago

there's around a 30:0 ratio in my comp sci classes

[–]knightdiver 29 points30 points ago

That's not a ratio. It may feel like it, but...

[–]txapollo342 2 points3 points ago

You know you have it bad in your engineering school when an indeterminate form is involved.

[–]rblkbrd 21 points22 points ago

My boyfriend is in the computer science program - another program with a serious lack of females - and he asked if I wanted to come and sit in on his lecture with him. I said yeah, thinking it's a big lecture and I wouldn't be too noticeable...There was only one other girl there.

[–]7RED7 24 points25 points ago

As long as the other girl didn't quietly beg "take me with you". I keed I keed.

[–]Darth_InvadeHer[S] 4 points5 points ago

I'm CS too. There are two girls in our classes. I guess I'm lucky :P

[–]Kalium 2 points3 points ago

I did CS. There were... two women in my year? Maybe?

I know my program was roughly 9:1. Most of those girls didn't want to date inside CS, either. The weeder courses didn't change the ratio, but they did cut the headcount by 50% or more.

[–]bearkin1 27 points28 points ago

4:1 ratio? Wow, that's heaven. In my petroleum engineering class, there is 60 guys and 4 girls. That's a 15:1 ratio. 4:1 is like an arts class to me. With my class' ratio, I might as well become gay.

[–]Lord_of_Potatoes 10 points11 points ago

With those number theres bound for there to be a guy in your class masturbating to thoughts of you.

[–]Evil_Eskimo 2 points3 points ago

Redditor here. Can confirm that 60/4 is indeed a 15:1 ratio. Carry on.

[–]CrayolaS7 1 point2 points ago

In one of my solid mechanics tutorials there are 2 girls in a class of 30. Next door at the same time each week is a psych class, all girls.

[–]Recyclebot 7 points8 points ago

YOU THINK 4:1 IS BAD? Join the Marine Corps

the ratio has to be something like

1,000 to 1

[–]crusader86 1 point2 points ago

It's 50:1 so not that bad... but still. No.

[–]cultured_banana_slug 1 point2 points ago

Well, to be fair, the number of women who can pass the physical fitness requirements is pretty small. Of that population, how many want to be Marines? Of that population, how many can actually make the (family, career) sacrifices necessary to make the leap?

Look at the bright side: You've got the cream of the crop.

[–]apullin 13 points14 points ago

Which one? I was at Caltech when it was about 4:1 or 5:1. And by the time you factored out all the girls who socially withdrew themselves, the ones who were straight from China and were culturally inaccessible, the lesbians, engaged, etc, it was actually more like 8:1 . And with a small student population, it'd literally be down to 8 or 9 single women on campus.

[–]icedune21 2 points3 points ago

It's a lot better here these days. I don't envy you.

[–]ElectricMoose 7 points8 points ago

4:1?! The ECE kids at my uni are 200:3!

[–]Darth_InvadeHer[S] 5 points6 points ago

For those who keep asking what school: New Mexico Tech. Fun tid bit, we are also the second most miserable college in the US

[–]dabezian 4 points5 points ago

Or you could go to class to learn and look for girls in other places. Most college campuses have an abundance of women, even if they aren't in your classes. It is not hard to find a pretense to talk to them (unless you come off as creepy, then you're shit out of luck).

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

That's the problem. The guys who complain the most are too ugly/creepy to find a girlfriend outside of their classes (I have doubts they could if the classes were mostly female), and instead choose to insult the few girls in their classes.

[–]cultured_banana_slug 1 point2 points ago

It also helps if you talk to a wider range of women than you'd otherwise approach. If a guy only approaches women he desperately wants to bone, he's going to have problems. Talking to girls should be about talking to members of the opposite sex, not about finding a girlfriend. Plus, who knows, maybe that girl who didn't seem attractive from across the room seems amazing once you get to know her?

Girls are just human beings who don't have penises.

[–]votes_are_scalars 7 points8 points ago

Best use of this gif I've ever seen, speaking as another unfortunate engineering undergrad.

[–]TheExtremistModerate 8 points9 points ago

You go to RPI, too?

Hah, I'm kidding, it's down to about 3:1 this year.

[–]Slime0 1 point2 points ago

"Down to?" That's where it was when I started there in 2001. Thought it would have improved by now.

(However, I am curious if he is at RPI, and misrepresented 75% with the wrong ratio.)

[–]TheExtremistModerate 1 point2 points ago

Oh, sorry, I got it wrong, down to about 2.5:1 FROM 3:1.

It was 72%/28% in 2009. Class of 2012 was 2.3:1, 70%/30%. I think my class (2015) is about the same.

[–]wadded 4 points5 points ago

4:1? Man your lucky. 2nd year eng here, 8 girls and around 115 guys...

[–]Chibbs00 2 points3 points ago

Sounds like my dear old alma mater. GT sausagefest!

[–]MagnaCarterGT 1 point2 points ago

The Tech Ratio stereotype will never die, even though now it's almost down to 2:1. le sigh

[–]Tessonia 6 points7 points ago

I came here to ask if it's Rolla as well.

[–]The-Jerkbag 1 point2 points ago

Rolla is a terrible, dark, boring, and unattractive place... Yet we continue to go there....

[–]Darth_InvadeHer[S] 1 point2 points ago

NMT. Perhaps not by coincidence, we are also the second most miserable college

[–]daiax 1 point2 points ago

Welp, my school clocks in at #5, which isn't all that surprising.

[–]tboyle6870 1 point2 points ago

Yes, 5 for me as well. I remember our school doing much worse in Princeton's review thing.

[–]Derppa 4 points5 points ago

What movie is this from?

[–]WBudWhite 4 points5 points ago

I was wondering the same thing. Why won't anyone ANSWER US?!

[–]Darth_InvadeHer[S] 6 points7 points ago

[–]mrob2738 1 point2 points ago

[–]noello 1 point2 points ago

Encino man I think

[–]Simonific 2 points3 points ago

Wow, 4:1? That's high. Mine has to be 6:1 or greater. Though that's just for engineering, the rest of the school is 1:3. It really is quite upsetting that all those artsies are getting all the girls.

[–]fireflycities 2 points3 points ago

I go to a 1:1 tech school, but back in high school when I took computer science as an elective, it was 40:1. It was especially weird since I'd taken the class before and I was the TA lol.

[–]DontJudgeMeMonkey 2 points3 points ago

4:1? Lucky. I'm in electrical engineering, and out of like 90 students we have about 2 girls.

[–]artydecor 2 points3 points ago

I found this to be quite interesting:

Is engineering destined to remain a male-dominated field? Not everywhere. In China, 40% of engineers are women, and in the former USSR, women accounted for 58% of the engineering workforce.

RIBS - Ratio Induced Bitch Syndrome

Ratio where I'm at is about 5:1, male:female.

Last week I happened to be standing outside when a girl (who was drunk) started saying, "There are no men anywhere! I can't find any guys at this damn school! I can't wait to move to New Mexico and find a boyfriend!"

If my own boyfriend hadn't been standing right next to me, I woulda busted out with a "GIRL are you KIDDING? I can't walk to the bathroom without tripping over ten single men making eyes at me. You're doing something wrong. Good luck in Meth Country."

[–]Kalium 7 points8 points ago

I have to assume she meant "Pretty and suave guys who will put up with an idiot like me".

Speaking as a former engineering student, the former is a much higher bar than the latter...

[–]the_girl 1 point2 points ago

In my opinion, most of the guys I met here were both suave and handsome, while being wildly intelligent and chill. I think in her case, it was the latter.

[–]hilariouspicard 15 points16 points ago

Just wait. It'll pay off. Move to Texas and meet a 24-year-old blonde knockout looking for a man's man that can provide for her and her future family. Life gets fucking better after college, fellow nerds. Trust me.

[–]spamato 67 points68 points ago

Doesn't it hurt knowing that blonde is only seeing you for money?

[–]enfyrneaux 20 points21 points ago

When you boil it all down to biological prerogative, it's always the same. He gets a fertile female that matches his fitness criteria, she gets a strong male with the resources and social power to ensure that any children they produce thrive.

As pure and neatly-wrapped that reduction seems to be, don't fall prey to the trap of ignoring the more nuanced aspects of the human critter.

[–]Junkymonkey5 44 points45 points ago

You're quite the romance aren't you?

[–]enfyrneaux 25 points26 points ago

Rico Fuckin' Suave.

[–]sikyon 8 points9 points ago

Unless you consider 24 year old blondes that can't provide for themselves and are only sexually attractive to have a low fitness level.

[–]persistent_illusion 5 points6 points ago

Biological determinism is an excuse for lack of social intelligence.

[–]cultured_banana_slug 1 point2 points ago

Joke is on him when he finds out she's really 45 and has had a really good plastic surgeon.

[–]Felarhin 1 point2 points ago

Better off just buying hookers at that point.

[–]hereaminuteago 34 points35 points ago

Wow, a hot bimbo that wants my money? Where do I sign up!

[–]builderb 20 points21 points ago

No it doesn't. Speak for yourself! I work in a shitty cubicle surrounded by middle-aged men. And once you get out of engineering school, you'll have less free time, not more. Regardless of how fast you do your work, they pay you to sit your ass in your cubicle for 8 hours a day, not counting your lunch break, not counting the time commuting to and from work through stop-and-go-traffic because they are not open minded enough to allow schedules other than 9-to-5 or to allow telecommuting.

I could always meet people in bars. Too bad I don't drink or enjoy that kind of atmosphere.

Ah the laments of a socially inept engineer. The environment just makes it worse. It's a ruthless feedback loop. I think I'll end up a crazy hermit in the woods. Or dead.

[–]jjarvis98 6 points7 points ago

Or you suck at dating.

Met my MD of a fiance on plentyoffish. Commuting to work took all of 5 minutes. I could be from living room to desk in 10. I suppose I could have biked if the backroads actually had shoulders. And I always got paid to get out of my desk and go down to the test cells where I got to play with 7 to 32 liter diesel engines.

[–]Stembio 1 point2 points ago

Online dating. It is how I have met my last couple of boyfriends. The current one is an engineer, heyo. It is kind of what you have to do if you work 60-80 hour weeks and don't drink.

[–]FortunaExSanguine 7 points8 points ago

Thank you for... hope.

[–]DJBJ 1 point2 points ago

Unless you know, you can't find a job in which case your just a broke homeless nerd.

[–]igotmyxomatosis 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, you engineers on Reddit sure fit the description of a fucking "man's man"

[–]crazywhiteguy 1 point2 points ago

Mechanical engineering student here, Started at 20:1, now 26:1. Started with 140ish students and had a bunch of dropouts, two of which were female.

[–]meno123 1 point2 points ago

Civil's not much better. With ~150 students in most lectures you can pick out two or three "for sure" females and an equal number of "maybe" females (which default to male because the odds are in that favour.

The one girl I keep in contact with from first year went into environmental engineering. I checked out their lectures. You could say I found out where all the women engineers went.

[–]Lunok 1 point2 points ago

wow you guys have it worse than RIT

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

University of Waterloo?

[–]robhol 1 point2 points ago

Only 4 to 1? You're lucky.

[–]WhyNotJustMakeOne 1 point2 points ago

Computer Science. Needless to say, our ratio is terrible.

[–]sparksandrocks 1 point2 points ago

happy cake day and awesome name

[–]rockyrho 1 point2 points ago

I'm an engineering student, and I happen to be one of the lucky guys who dates a female engineering student. I have to frequently shake my head. Men get desperate in those parts, pack rations

[–]ccchan 1 point2 points ago

I do not understand how could a person try to deny Sam, after he helped saving middle-earth

[–]engrishosophy 1 point2 points ago

Man, what girl would turn down Samwise Gamgee?

[–]ZiggyZombie 1 point2 points ago

UW Platteville?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I study mechatronics and wețve got a whole floor just for our department. We've got maybe one girl. I love it that they went "Fuck it, there aren't any girls here anyways, so we'll just turn the women's bathroom into the teacher's bathroom"

[–]retepeter 1 point2 points ago

COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES?

[–]gythorg 1 point2 points ago

SCHOOL OF MINES

[–]aydogdu21 1 point2 points ago

Samwise Gamgee?

[–]Sloady 1 point2 points ago

For making a decent post on your cakeday instead of bwaaing around asking for Karma, here's an upvote.

[–]maleboks 1 point2 points ago

...Michael DeLuise warns you off?

What kind of school is this?

[–]razorkk 1 point2 points ago

which college do you go? it is 3:1 here at Georgia Tech

[–]jb2386 1 point2 points ago

I'm a business and humanities student. My ratios are (guys:girls) 1:1 and 1:10 (but that doesn't include the 50% of the guys that are gay) for those subject areas respectively. I recently just got a girlfriend studying engineering. One of my first thoughts was how I just made life harder for some engineering guys. :/

[–]bricksinthewall 1 point2 points ago

I now feel odd as a female senior EE student...I must be butt ugly because no guy ever waves at me like that in class!

[–]woodstock_22 1 point2 points ago

Michael Buble.... always stealing the ladies' hearts.

[–]hipster_n00b_girl 1 point2 points ago

This is irrelevant, but happy cakeday!

[–]Joejoebinkz 0 points1 point ago

My guess is ERAU

[–]323K13L 0 points1 point ago

RHIT?

[–]neosporin 0 points1 point ago

Comp/Electrical Engineering here, and the ratio is around 20:1 :(

I swindled my way into her lab group first day, though. Have it locked down. I'm creepy like that.

Samwise?!?!
