Don't get me wrong, I adore turtles and think babies are absolutely adorable. However, the fact that this little guy is having a harder time breathing for the sake of this photo doesn't make it all that "aww" in my book.

When turtles are on their back, it becomes more difficult for them to breathe. Their lungs are located inside and along the top of their shell. So, when turtles are on their back the rest of their weight is situated on top of their lungs, making it more difficult for them to breathe freely.

Not to mention, this is quite the repost.

Am I the only one who sees the grumpy gnome face on his belly?

[–]ktool 2 points3 points ago

The nose is the turtle's yolk sac spot! It's how you can tell it hatched very recently.

have you ever done any psychadelics ? i see shit like this all the time everywhere, whether its on my bathroom tiles, living room ceiling, corner of my eye. I always wondered if it was from them shrooms

[–]Magrathea_MAGRATHEA 0 points1 point ago

Pattern recognition is totally normal but after you've done psychedelics you tend to notice more. A change in perspective is the true lasting effect.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-

Sorry for the squeeing, but I like turtles about as much as the Reddit collective likes cats.

Would I be right in saying that you flipped it on it's back so you could actually get a picture of it? I know I tried once, and I know those little guys are fast, and they want nothing to do with your plan of keeping them in your hand.

When I was nine years old, I went camping at a lake with my father. My parents had just split and were finishing up a divorce, so this was a family event for just my dad and I. (This will be important later.)

I made a friend at the lake that weekend, and we decided to dig a "mote" all along the beach. This huge hole ended up stretching probably about 20 ft along the shoreline, and as a boat would go by, the wake would flood water into it. Well, at one point, I noticed something moving down at the far end of the mote. I walked down to find a baby box turtle (about this size) struggling to find his way out. I scooped him up and put him in a clear plastic cup.

I decided I was going to keep Kermit. I put mud and twigs and grass in his cup. I found small gnats and placed them in there just in case. My father and I had no idea what he ate, but I figured I'd look it up when I got home. I woke up all night long to check on him and make sure he was okay. The next day, we headed home. I kept Kermit in my lap the whole ride...

Until I called my mother and asked if I could bring him home. She refused, saying he would die in captivity and he carried diseases. I was heartbroken. I cried like a great big baby.

We stopped by a small stream to let him go. He crawled right out and went on his way.

I like to think my Kermit survived that day, and lived a long and happy life. While the odds were against that little reptile, I have to believe he made it. He was my first pet, and I loved him.

That is all.

The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can't. Not without your help. But you're not helping.

[–]QueenofCute 0 points1 point ago

I lovvvveee turtles! He is so cute!!! Squeeeeeee! But you shouldnt put him on his back. Its harder for him to breathe. Just sayin.

[–]Haneesh716 0 points1 point ago

That is adorable.

I have one just like that (size, softish underside of shell, sharp claws) and I have no idea what to feed it.

I got it a few days ago, and it isn't eating anything. I have tried the turtle food it came with, strawberries sliced really small, bananas smushed up and cut into tiny pieces, lettuce, small pieces of mango, etc.

I have had no luck so far. It is, however, drinking water.

Turtle = flippers, lives in ocean. Tortoise = feet, lives on land.

[–]EspeonageX 0 points1 point ago

Wrrrrrooong... Tortoise = elephantine feet (flat, weight situated at bottom of foot to support large weight) purely terrestrial. Domed carapace in most cases.

Turtle = flat feet or flippers, webbed toes, mostly aquatic, streamlined "flat" shell in most cases (exception being those turtles who have adapted over time to living around large crocodilians, where said turtles have a much more arched shell to be able to withstand the force of the crocodilian's bite)

Also, cool tidbit, many aquatic turtles do not produce saliva, not that you can SEE this as a defining characteristic, but you will notice that when turtles feed, they will drag their prey below water, as they need the moisture to aid in breaking the food down. (does not include semi-aquatic turtles like box turtles and wood turtles)
