The funny thing about Gaia is that the "Earth as a living organism" hypothesis is actually real with some support from real biologists. If living creatures on a planet, even without meaning to, help keep the planet suitable for more life, then that's pretty awesome. It's not a god, but the complex system that is the Earth biosphere is certainly worthy of awe.
