Can't tell if this was the original...Or the other image I saw...

[–]warcrafter 1 point2 points ago

I saw the other one couple hours ago so this might be the duplicate

[–]Jackamatack 1 point2 points ago

Ya I was thinking it was a repost, but it's still the same meaning in what the original post says. I'd say he has the right to post his feelings with the same picture.

"Accused"? I'll gladly take the compliment.

[–]mtnjon 2 points3 points ago

A mighty powerful collage. The copious length only hits home your point that much harder.

[–]typewriter_ribbon 1 point2 points ago

A good point- so many examples where the 'let's just respect each other's viewpoints' trope doesn't hold up. I'd like to know, though - if a 'militant atheist' wants to combat such extreme things, where do you personally draw the line before yourself becoming that extreme? Militant = war?

[–]mrwood69[S] 1 point2 points ago

There have been images around the internet that depict militant Christians (abortion clinic bombers), militant Muslims (Al Qaeda, Jihad, etc.), and a militant atheist (Richard Dawkins, etc.). If being a militant atheist means constantly trying to get rid of religious based terrorism, then I'll gladly be one.

I don't feel you answered his question - a question I would like to hear an answer to as well.

Its become abundantly clear to me recently that religion causes a lot of very serious problems. I can no longer blame the shit on this collage and everything else going on like it on wicked people, because not all people do this kind of stuff, the religious do. I just can't ignore the hypocrisy of saying "I'm going to deny you your right to religion because you're denying others' rights". How do you see this?

[–]mrwood69[S] 0 points1 point ago

Fortunately, there is positive growth for the atheist population in first world countries. Quite simply, it is because of figureheads such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens (amongst many others) that atheists are no longer afraid. Just in matter of a few hundred years ago, those very people would be put to death, or at least punished in some way for their blasphemy. All these people are doing is putting some reason into the heads of those who have yet to do any, and that's the weapon of the militant atheist: reason.

It sounds overused, but it's truly one of the key components of an atheist's mindset and the ultimate utility. That's my extent. Eventually religion will die off as the human race advances in technology and morality (that's me implying religion is, of course, primitive and immoral).

[–]PumpkynPye 1 point2 points ago

Ah, then you define militant differently from me. I would define a "militant atheist" as someone actively trying to eliminate religion by force, or someone who would immediately dislike any theist they encountered and try to convince them they're wrong. If all you're speaking about is "someone who promotes reason and critical thinking", then sign me up.

[–]mrwood69[S] 0 points1 point ago

Precisely, and that's my point. For some reason, being a militant atheist has the same connotation as terrorists amongst non-radical/extreme theists.

[–]PumpkynPye 1 point2 points ago

Because a "militant Christian" or a "militant Muslim" is far more negative than your definition of a "militant atheist", so when people see the term "militant" they assume it's parallel to its other uses.

At least, that's what confused me.

[–]brainburger 0 points1 point ago

The phrase actually comes from Richard Dawkins, who used it semi-humorously in his TED Talk.

I just can't ignore the hypocrisy of saying "I'm going to deny you your right to religion because you're denying others' rights". How do you see this?

I don't think many -if any- atheists want to deny rights to the religious. We just want to stop the religious abusing other people. I'd count myself as an active and atheist atheist in that I will try to challenge religious excesses when I can. They can do what they like in their religious meetings, as long as it is legal. I think it's beneficial to expose what they do, and to debate the issues with them. That's it really. Let the power of reason have its effect, but for that to happen we need to bring reason to them.

This collage is great, and I think its great that it is being reposted so that many will have access to it.

"I don't think many -if any- atheists want to deny rights to the religious"

I have actually encountered atheists that think that religion needs to be taken away from people because "as the picture posted by OP shows, people are obviously not able to control themselves", or something to that effect. That's simply why I was asking; I wanted to know if this was actually a popular view here, and when I saw "militant atheism" I thought this would be the best place to ask.

As I've said though, I totally agree with both you and the OP in this thread, I just needed to understand what we meant by "militant atheism".

Waiting on the all out fundie attack on atheists and science. Witch hunt style. Only a matter of time.

[–]necromundus 0 points1 point ago

I won't accuse you of being a militant atheist, but I will accuse you of re-posting something that was posted on reddit earlier today.

[–]mrwood69[S] 0 points1 point ago

I feel like a link instead of italicized words would've been more effective. I'm not doubting you, I'm just saying.

Karmadecay has this, and a few older postings:

I haven't seen it before though.

I like the justin beiber at the end.

Justin beiber - blame god.

[–]Josephalan1 0 points1 point ago

Hah. Beiber.

[–]thelastoneusaw 0 points1 point ago

When I first started looking through the pictures I had that kind of delighted feeling of knowing that others share my views, but as I kept reading and reading I was overwhelmed first by sadness then by anger. I think the worst of it for me were the witch killings in Africa. The picture of the little albino girl especially. It's an extreme case of the pain religious bigotry and destructive superstition causes around the world today.

[–]OhMyMoogle 0 points1 point ago

I've embraced the label 'militant atheist'. With organizations like 1MM and the WBC out there, there needs to be some militant atheism going around.
