“Wouldn't you like to see a positive LSD story on the news? To base your decision on information rather than scare tactics and superstition? Perhaps? Wouldn't that be interesting? Just for once? 'Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Heres Tom with the Weather.'” - Bill Hicks

"there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream"
That part of it is stupid to me , evan if life is just a dream then when that dream ends death is a good word to describe that end.
obviously the universe as a whole is not dead when an indervideal dies but that subjective exsperance buble of the universe has died.
[–]Eternity42Immensity 4 points5 points6 points 2 months ago
You are right, death is a good word for the end of that state, but the context is with the common usage of the word death.

A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive. (Albert Einstein, 1954)

Poor Einstein. You can't get outside of being a human being. All your attempts will be motivated by the ancient stuff you're trying to free yourself from. In other words, all attempts to transcend one's humanity will be pathetically human.

From a practical standpoint, all agnostic theist 'religions' are just one peg removed from atheism. The difference is only theoretical, because from a practical standpoint believing in an impersonal god and not believing in any god makes no difference to how a person should conduct themselves.
That said, I'd still prefer applying Occam's Razor. While deism is probably the simplest, pantheism and pandeism are rather high up on the number of assumptions one needs to accept.
So thanks, but no thanks.

[–]HappyNacho 1 point2 points3 points 2 months ago
I remember there was some universe-god theory that went something like this:
Dead person meets god and ask questions and one was like "who are you?" and he said
-I'm you.
-me?
-yes, actually I am everyone.
-I'm a god?
-not yet, you will be one day.
-how? explain.
-you see, you are everyone and god but first you need to reincarnate everytime you die and see all the possible perspectives. So when you finally have lived all the possible lives you'll become a god.
Anyone knows this? I'm kind of curious of how it was. I read it some time ago.

This is the same thing, phrased more eloquently. Babylon 5 had a lot of good episodes relevant to this subreddit, especially the one where all the species on the station show off what they believe. The humans go last, and it's inspiring.
[–]antonivs 3 points4 points5 points 2 months ago
What Delenn says in that clip is as irrational as any religion, though.
The idea that "the universe puts people in the right place" is magical thinking. It's unfalsifiable, and there's no evidence for it. It's also somewhat at odds with the idea that "we are the universe" - if the universe needs sentient parts of itself to figure itself out, then how would it be capable of putting people in the right place unless it used similar parts to do so - in which case, we'd certainly notice that happening.
You've never put yourself where you want to be? If you are the universe or a piece of it, and you put yourself where you want to be then isn't that the same thing as saying the universe puts you in the right place from time to time?
[–]antonivs 0 points1 point2 points 2 months ago
No, it's not the same thing - in fact all such claims are classic examples of the fallacy of composition and/or equivocation.
For example, if your brother hates you, and since your brother is part of the universe, does that mean the universe hate you? The answer is no, because the properties of a part are not the same as the properties of the whole. Assuming otherwise is fallacy of composition.
Equivocation comes in with a statement like "you are the universe", which is a valid English statement that actually means something more specific like "you are a part of the universe", etc. Taking the word "are" as meaning "completely equivalent to" is equivocation - the statement "you are the universe" may be true in one sense, but it doesn't mean that you are literally a collection of untold billions of galaxies each consisting of billions of stars, etc.
Here's what Delenn said in the clip:
"The universe puts us in places where we can learn - they're never easy places, but they're right. Wherever we are is the right place and the right time ... the universe knows what it's doing."
So she's not saying that we put ourselves in the right place "from time to time". She's saying that we're always in the right place, and that this is because the universe "knows what it's doing". You could substitute "God" for "the universe" here and the meaning of the sentence would barely change, because Delenn is ascribing intent and sentience to the universe as a whole.
It's a religious statement, that serves the usual purpose of religion: to assign purpose to humans and define their place in the universe. Which seems like it might be a noble goal until you recognize that to achieve it, rationality has been discarded, so that what you end up with is a fantasy.
[–]nonpareilpearl 1 point2 points3 points 2 months ago
When I saw the quote I definitely thought the author was paraphrasing Delenn. Glad to know I'm not the only one!
[–]Flynn58 0 points1 point2 points 2 months ago

Sorry have to call bullshit.... It is like saying "You are the universe jerking itself off". But honestly, this pseudo-spiritualism has got to go. While it is a beautiful thought that we come from stardust, that is all there is to it nothing more (nothing less)
[–]ticktalik 7 points8 points9 points 2 months ago
Well the "beautiful stardust thought" you're talking about is the same type of pseudo-spiritual bullshit as the one in the picture. If "we came from stardust" is supposed to be truer and more profound than "we are the universe jerking itself off", you have to prove that there is a way for jerking off to happen without the universe. So yes, there is "nothing more nor less" to jerking off other than the fact that it is the universe doing it...it just happens to be localised.
I do accept moral responsibility for my actions, but I also demand it be taken on record that I never chose to exist. If the universe takes the right to have me created out of its fancy stardust, then it can damn well take the right to my jerking off as well...and the thoughts that go with it. As far as I'm concerned, I think that's sufficient evidence that it is indeed the universe that jerks itself off, it just tries to get away with it by first disguising itself as "me", then blaming me for the whole dirty deed. This made me very angry, and now I widely regard the universe as a bad idea.
You are joking right? It is a fact that we are made from stardust, a scientifically proven fact. While it it must be true that you are part of the universe, that does not make you the universe. Really if you use the term universe in such a context you seriously undermine its importance. It is a silly pure logic based philosophy that should not be used on things best left for real science.
[–]ticktalik 2 points3 points4 points 2 months ago
But didn't I propose how it makes sense in the second paragraph? No, it doesn't make "me" the universe as a whole, that would be a waste of words. Nonetheless, how can I be anything less? This sounds like pseudo-philosophical spiritualist woo to you, I see that... but your objection was purely semantical. _angel also makes an interesting explanation.
Concepts like "I" and "free will" emerged in our collective subjective paradigm, because that's the only way we can function. The question here is: are we going to make these concepts more than they are? You certainly seem to want to. To me they are done for thanks to science; neither souls nor freedom exist in any meaningful way objectively, they are illusions... and yet we implicitly give them importance by evading their explanation.
The only definition of "I" you accept is "I", which as I said, I'm compelled to follow for the sake of practicality. This convention doesn't include any effort to explain the relationship to everything else we experience to exist "out there". It is a fact that the human body is made from atoms from stars. This fact is trivial next to the fact that all events are made possible by physical laws we see as defining the universe. Including the most important one, which is my consciousness.
Seriously now, where does the universe end and I begin. You said in your latter comment that "only humans are capable of experience, not the universe". Are you saying that humans are some type of strongly emergent entity in the universe? That's one idea. I claim humans are temporally, spatially, materially and experientially reducible to what we call the universe. Sadly the matter is down to belief, since we have no data or tools to determine how phenomenological experience, qualia, consciousness and other such nonsense arises and what's its nature. Woe is me, now I am dogmatic as well (TIL the universe is dogmatic).
[–]_angel 1 point2 points3 points 2 months ago*
You are in this universe therefor you are apart of it.
So either you're a piece of this universe like a piece of an engine in a car, or you were put inside of this universe from outside of the universe like a fish in a fish tank.
You're you and I'm me just like my heart and lungs are different creatures, but both my heart and my lungs are apart of me. We are a part of the universe. Saying we are the universe is just another way to say it. Is my heart me? We are the universe.
It is the root of all spirituality and all religion, but not in the church 'worship god' sense. One doesn't have to believe it to understand it. Inversely, one can believe it but not understand it.
[–]voyyful 0 points1 point2 points 2 months ago*
The same goes for a rock. Would you also say a rock is a way for the universe to know itself ? While it must be true that we are part of the universe, we are Not so special. And all that put aside why would anyone speak of the universe as being capable of "knowing" ? This is a human phenomena and should not easily be accredited to the universe itself.
Edit: "Experiencing", not "knowing" my bad, still applies though.

Human concepts are not separate from the universe, they are just as much the universe as the atoms that make us. Nothing could not be the universe.
[–]ticktalik 1 point2 points3 points 2 months ago*
I understand where he's coming from (maybe, I don't want to put words in peoples' mouths). It's the standard atheistic "lets not bullshit around now" stance. Which is fine. But no matter how evidentialist you want to be, no matter how sceptical and "realistic", there comes a point where your world view has no evidence for its foundation. It needs an assumption to start it all off and there is no reason to "choose" one over another. You can be a solipsist; you can be a Christian fundie; you can assume an objective world; you can be a person who asserts free will...
One of these assumptions is that you start off with the "I" as a separate thing in the universe. You allow it to be analysed scientifically as part of human biology etc. but you don't allow it to be inflated or deflated along with those discoveries. You're supposed to face reality and "yolo" (:P) yourself through life until your infinite demise. Without the intention of causing offence, I'd say it's an ego thing, of a certain type.
One doesn't have to experience life as being pushed into existence out of nothing, expected to be brave and stoic about it and then pulled back into nothingness as a helpless victim. You can perceive your existence as a unique form emerging from some pre-existing "source", instead of a unique form being separate and emerging from nothing. Maybe this makes it a bit clearer why one might identify with the "source", the whole universe.
You can call it a coping strategy to mitigate the fear of death or useless new age nonsense. If I could highlight the difference in one statement I'd say that "the universe thinks me" instead of "me thinking the universe". And as I said, I think I have evidence: me not choosing to be born, the "self" with it's "free will" being an illusion etc. If "I" don't exist, then what is doing all the thinking and perceiving? I guess the universe?
Have all the upvotes.

Right, from now on I will refer to myself in the 3rd person as "The Universe". The Universe is going to play Skyrim now. The Universe bids you farewell.
[–]aphextom9 0 points1 point2 points 2 months ago
and by thinking about this concept, you are the universe being aware that it is experiencing itself.

If the universe can have experiences, then it must be conscious in some way. That sounds like pantheism to me.
[–]kalimashookdeday 0 points1 point2 points 2 months ago
Too bad, scientifically speaking, no one knows much or what the fuck a "consciousness" really is.

I think it's awesome that r/atheism posted some deep shit for once!! Yaayyyy new age spirituality!! One day, you will ALL be converts :}
New age? lol More like old age.

What a meaningless statement.
[–]Mojorizen2[S] 9 points10 points11 points 2 months ago
No it's not.
[–]olbeefy 2 points3 points4 points 2 months ago
The only meaningless statement I've seen here is yours.
Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having read it. I award you no upvotes, and may the FSM have mercy on your soul.

[–]DFractalH -1 points0 points1 point 2 months ago
Yeah, but not that close to Earth. Otherwise, we wouldn't be experiencing the universe for much longer.
[–]antonivs 2 points3 points4 points 2 months ago
Being crushed by a moon would involve experiencing the universe quite intensely!
[–]DFractalH 1 point2 points3 points 2 months ago
I like your way of thinking. Problem being, you'd experience it for only a fair amount of time, and of that most likely with wet pants.
[–]NightHawk929 -1 points0 points1 point 2 months ago
I experience myself a lot...
[–]mcmur -1 points0 points1 point 2 months ago
This statement is pretty much true. Not even any equivocation.
