    I just posted about this :P. Yes, they get big. Some 'breeders' claim they stay small according to how much you feed them. Well yes, if you malnourish an animal, it will stay small and starving. They claim the piggies won't get big, but they do, mine is about 150 lbs, give or take 15.

    The term 'teacup pigs' is a lie. How do I know? Well, I have one, or what was supposed to be one. In all reality they are your typical potbelly pig, which can get up to about 250 lbs. They are breeded just to be pets, this is correct, but the concept of them staying small is a scam. Luckily for my baby boy, we have more than enough room to support him, and his size.

      I've always wondered this...whether people would put aside their love for their pets to enjoy the delicious food, or whether we are simply detached from farm animals and would find it very difficult to eat them if we had them as pets.

        I personally wouldn't eat a dog, but that's just because of the culture I grew up in. Many cultures around the world consume what we consider pets, it just depends where you grow up.

        Do you make an effort to buy ethically raised pig products? What's your view on factory farming of pigs? I ask because since you have a pig as a pet, you're much more aware of the intelligence and sociability of pigs (which I thought might be influencing factors in people not wanting to eat dogs).

        I wish I had a choice, however in my area, that is hardly possible. The intelligence and sociability of pigs, is unbelievable. Factory farming pigs to say the least, is wrong. At the minimum, I understand pigs need tons of space, toys, and interaction to be comfortable and happy. In my opinion, that is what is important. It's sad to say that it really is unlikely that there will be a more humane, as well as efficient way of raising pigs in the future. They are stubborn animals, but I find it just adds to their personality (at least with Zeus anyway). It is hard for me to eat pork products, especially when I know later that night, there will be a pig sleeping at the foot of my bed.

        I had pet rabbits...and i still ate rabbit meat while i had them...they eventually turned themselves into rabbit meat as well....for some stray cats though.

        I am very confused by this because meat rabbits are very different from the domestic rabbits people keep as pets.

        As a rabbit owner, I could never eat any kind of rabbit. This is mostly due to my love for the animal but also because rabbits are considered "poultry" and are killed very inhumanely.

        Honestly if I go looking for detailed info to link you to, it's going to ruin my entire day. I'm sorry, I know it's not right to bring something up and then decline to provide info/sources but it really will just destroy me for at least the rest of the day. I hope if you're interested that you'll look it up for yourself. All I can say is that rabbits, because they are classified as poultry, are exempt from certain "humane" slaughtering standards that apply to other food animals.

        Not sure if it is a representative example, but during the old Michael Moore film "Roger and Me", he interviews a woman as she is preparing rabbits to be eaten. She basically just clubbed them over the head to knock them out and then sliced them open and peeled their skin off. :(

          I'm with you. However, I would probably only be comfortable doing so while visiting a country where dogs generally aren't kept as pets. I'm an adventurous eater, but I'm more likely to try things if they're local specialties. For example, I would never have thought to try sea urchin until I visited my grandmother in Greece.

          People eat animals that can be kept as pets. They don't eat their own pets (usually). Humans are quite capable of thinking around things like that.

          People have pigs as pets and also eat pig products. They dont eat their pet, they eat pigs that were raised as farm animals for food.

          Well yeah, that's kind of the question. A pet pig isn't really that common, so it's hard to say on a wider level what would happen. But I have a feeling that if there were dog factory farms where dog meat was produced en masse under cruel conditions, people might be more upset about that than they are about pig factory farming.

          One and the other are animals(pigs are even more intelligent then dogs). Why ppl are more upset by eating dogs? Well... people are stupid and most of them are ruled by their emotions.

          I personally find raising dogs for food stupid because they are meat eaters. First you have to grow plant eaters to feed those meat eaters and then you eat meat eaters. Economically it doesn't make sense.

          Then again same could be argued for eating insects. Economically its much more efficient, better for health of humans etc.

          I have a friend who grew up on a farm and had "pet cows." The particular cow that she liked had a particularly cliche name, "Betsy." She was around 6 or 7 and one night they were eating some steak for dinner. Her brothers, who had been told sternly by their parents not to tell her that they were eating betsy, went ahead and told her. She freaked the fuck out. Long story short she has been a vegetarian ever since, and is uncomfortable every time you bring up the topic. There is no delineation in the real world.

          Hmmm...My brother and I were raised on a farm and we had pet cows with names. We definitely ate them and thought nothing of it. And we both still eat as much beef as anyone, personally I like knowing where my beef comes from....We are of course heartless bastards though I suppose.

              I beg to differ, my pigs really don't suffer. One look and you know they are happy (especially when I open up fresh land for them to forage on) Also they are delicious. (note: I raise heritage pigs outside on pasture and in woods. No concrete sewage pits, no permanent pens just a temporary electric fence and a trailer) Slaughter is in an excellent facility and as a way to die i'd take quick in a slaughterhouse over slow in hospital any day.

              Animals can be raised and slaughtered humanely, it's just much more expensive.

              While I don't completely disagree with you, I think it needs to be understood that the majority of people are not consuming animal products from that kind of environment. Conventionally raised is the norm and sadly this will not change. I live in a very populated area, and we don't have a Trader Joe's, or even a Whole Foods. A lot of people simply don't have access to organic meat, or can't afford it.

              I don't really get all the 'vegos vs meat eater beef' (no pun). I eat meat but I don't begrudge people who choose not to, or belittle their choice. I agree with a lot of the arguments vegetarians have about not eating meat, namely the treatment of intensivley farmed animals and its impact on the enviroment. The more vegetarians the better I say.
