Whether it's a track or a live audience it's the quickest way to ruin a comedy show for me personally. I hate live comedy television for this reason. It either makes it out like the home audience is too stupid to know when to laugh laugh, or I have to listen to a bunch of morons laugh at every stupid look one of the actors gives.

If I could just chuckle to myself while waiting for a good joke I'd probably be able to watch more of the show. But instead the laughs make all the comedy feel incredibly forced and awful.

I remember when I was a kid almost all sitcoms had laugh tracks. I didn't mind it so much at the time. But now it makes them hard to watch.

They record the studio audience and then play it back. That's why the laughter always has the same quality. More than that, relying on laughter, whether from a studio audience or not--and make no mistake, they're warmed up first, so they're already in the mood to laugh--is still, as someone else said so eloquently, a psychological crutch.

Laugh tracks make you want to laugh at home, and therefore watch more. The problem is that they don't improve the actual quality of the show at all. Hence shitty shows like The Big Bang Theory that seem to be loved by the masses.

A LOT of things are bad without laugh edits. I have the unedited Mitch Hedberg Comedy Central special. It took the audience FOREVER to warm up to him. You could tell he was a bit frustrated. The final edit, of course, makes it sound like they laughed constantly. The material is all good if you like the humor, you're just more likely to laugh more when you hear other people laughing.

I never liked The Big Bang Theory. I've always thought that it was a piece of shit, the lowest bar of entertainment, loved only by the idiot masses, all while it panders to them and mocks things that I enjoy and care about, which leads the people around me to say things like "haha, you're just like Sheldon". Because, of course, my liking Doctor Who means that I'm a flat, one dimensional caricature.

I don't give one flying red fuck what Reddit thinks. The Big Bang Theory is a pathetic, pointless, dickless piece of garbage that is everything wrong with sitcom writing these days. It is a pandering disease in the face of all that is serialized storytelling.

Mitch Hedberg is funny, but not Jesus in tinted glasses. Arrested Development--or even Community--is not the greatest thing on television ever. Reddit is, indeed, a hive mind.

But long before I found Reddit, I knew that show was festering, putrid garbage, so don't you for one fucking second act like people hate it because it's popular, you stupid slack jawed ape.

Cool name calling and everything there, brother. Thing is, I was never talking about individual people suddenly hating Big Bang Theory, I was talking of reddit as a whole. Now, before you check my account age and say "but you haven't even been a redditor for that long!", I'll make it clear that this is my second account. The privacy of my first was compromised, so I bailed from it.

Back on track, I was saying that "reddit" doesn't like Big Bang Theory anymore, not "Aspel". I remember a couple years ago seeing a lot of posts praising Big Bang Theory, for how funny and original it was. Since then, the show has gained a mainstream audience and reddit subsequently jumped on the hate wagon. Unrustle your jimmies, dude.

Here's one a friend linked me, where the uploader cut out the waiting between laughter. It's much more flowing, but it still doesn't come off as funny in the least to me.

I feel like the worst offender in the series of jokes is that he says something about the memory card being included with the N64... which used no memory cards for more than the vast majority of games. It's not even a good 'nerdy joke'.

I've seen several no laugh track edits of Big Bang Theory and this is by far the most seamless.

So much that I sort of forgot that it was an edited clip, and was just sort of watching. It just sort of seemed like people talking. None of it came across as straight jokes.
