oh you found a gif from an old video from the ebaumsworld era... i dont remember why or exactly when, but i first found it just labeled as "this is what happens when you microwave a cellphone" and from the sound accompanying it, it sounded like the phone face lets out an almost demonic scream/screech

An idiom is actually one common type of meme. And certain image macros, like the one above, are also memes. What KAMalosh said is therefore legit (assuming you agree that using the "beating a dead horse" meme is itself beating a dead horse.)

I know what a meme is, pal. "An idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture.". That was from webster's. I would say that an idiom fits that definition pretty well, wouldn't you? Meme was also coined by Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene.
