I like this one better. :)

[–]lavaracer 9 points10 points ago

The spectating driftwood in the OP is pretty cool.

[–]boogermanus 5 points6 points ago

Upvoted for posting an image Krakatau that I haven't seen before!

[–]mike95242[S] 10 points11 points ago

I would actually have to agree with you on that one.

[–]towski 10 points11 points ago

I would prefer to be in the fishing boat

[–]Kantham 1 point2 points ago

Yes because it's straight to the point. But when it comes to hanging it on a wall, I'd take the one OP linked, the choice of subject in correspondence with the location really creates a nice setting.

I find it amazing that the volcanic island in the picture did not even exist before 1927 but its such an active volcano that its growing at a huge rate so that its current height reaches as high as 300m. Prior to 1927 the entire bay was essentially a massive crater created by the 1883 explosion that destroyed the previous much larger volcano. Where the photographer is standing was part of the much larger volcano whose centre is pretty much where the new volcanic vent is. The bay in the photo didn't even exist before then.

Also, I think I've found the exact location this photo was taken from on Google maps.

Incredible work! looks like the right spot to me too.

[–]Xirious 0 points1 point ago

Commenting to save for late. Thanks!

[–]Sharkbat 0 points1 point ago

Definitely the right spot. You can tell from the big dipper in the background that the photographer is facing due north.

[–]MechaSnacks 18 points19 points ago

And that's where we've got to take the ring, Sam-Wise.

[–]SaikoGekido 1 point2 points ago

Did someone say artifact lands?

[–]bill_nydus 4 points5 points ago

Ah man, middle school. Middle school is calling me again.

[–]Mildo 3 points4 points ago

When its father Krakatoa erupted it was the loudest sound in modern history people heard it from super far away. This makes me think about the Yellowstone supervolcano that erupted 640k years ago. I'd probably hear it here in Minneapolis if it erupted now. That's if I'm not dead.

[–]gildedtestes 2 points3 points ago

It was audible in London. That would mean Yellowstone should be audible in China when it goes.

[–]angryfinger 2 points3 points ago

Krakatoa was recorded as being heard up to 3,000 miles away. So yeah, I think you'd hear it in Minnesota.

Coincidentally the Yellowstone supervolcano scares the crap out of me. I know there's obviously a very small chance that it's going to erupt in my lifetime but it is past due so, umm...yeah.

[–]illegal_martian 1 point2 points ago

I think Minnesota is about 9,000 miles away from Krakatoa.

[–]angryfinger 1 point2 points ago

I believe Mildo was talking about hearing the Yellowstone supervolcano not Krakatoa.

[–]eaglextron 1 point2 points ago

If you interest in supervolcano you better see this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toba_catastrophe_theory

[–]angryfinger 1 point2 points ago

I'll see your Toba catastrophe and raise you the Siberian Traps which were formed by a volcanic event that lasted for 1 million years http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siberian_Traps

[–]Lord-Longbottom -3 points-2 points ago

(For us English aristocrats, I leave you this 3,000 miles -> 24000.0 Furlongs) - Pip pip cheerio chaps!

[–]Skiddywinks 3 points4 points ago

Any higher res versions? I like the one elozano6879 posted because you see more volcano, but I love the set up of the OP.

[–]SubaruBirri 2 points3 points ago

Tineye found the largest image being 1000x650. Any internet gurus care to delve deeper?

(link invalid after 72 hours)

[–]Skiddywinks 0 points1 point ago

Thanks man, hadn't thought of tineye!

[–]climateoffear 2 points3 points ago

Anak means child in Bahasa Indonesia. Anak Krakatau was born from the eruption of Krakatau in 1883. That eruption quite literally blew the island to pieces.

[–]bakewood 0 points1 point ago

Loudest noise every recorded. I can't imagine what it was like at ground zero.

[–]matebeatscoffee 1 point2 points ago

More like, Mount Doom without the surrounding peaks.

[–]friday6700 1 point2 points ago

Thought this was a video game at first. Kept trying to figure out what it was from until I saw the subreddit name. I need to get out more.

[–]mario6652 1 point2 points ago

Didn't this same volcano cause that mini-ice age back in the 19th century? Any chance this could happen again?

[–]DubiumGuy 2 points3 points ago

Not a mini ice age no, but it did cause average global temperatures to drop by 1.2c the following year and interrupted global weather patterns for around 5 years afterwards.

[–]GodManKing 1 point2 points ago

And the Big Dipper.

[–]blacksheep89 1 point2 points ago

Seen it, upvote anyway

[–]jdk 1 point2 points ago

This looks like a scene that belongs in LOST.

[–]danomano65 1 point2 points ago

I love LOST.

[–]wingfire 1 point2 points ago

One does not simply swim into Mordor

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

That's hot ;)

[–]Oirek 1 point2 points ago

Is that the big dipper up in the sky? In Sweden we call it "karlavagnen" but it seems to be upside down. A bit Australian don't you think?

[–]Swany 0 points1 point ago

Krakatau is an Indonesian island, in the Southern Hemisphere, and yes, the star systems down there are not what you'd expect. I used to live in Indonesia, and remember looking up at the sky and thinking, "I know those stars, but they're pointing the wrong way".

It looks upside down because it is, by our standards, upside down. :)

[–]Oirek 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I learned that in astronomy class, but I have never actually seen it :D

[–]tomonline 1 point2 points ago

through a fish-eye lens!

[–]AggressiveAggressive 1 point2 points ago

Those poor Krakatoans

[–]RedditMole 1 point2 points ago

Forgive me, I totally read the title wrongly at first.

[–]ohreddit1 1 point2 points ago

When was this? Increase volcanic activity at one of the worlds mega-volcanos is not good. 2012

[–]angryfinger 1 point2 points ago

Anak Krakatoa translates into Son of Krakatoa. This volcano was literally born out of the ocean on top of Krakatoa which, when it exploded created what is believed to be one of the loudest sounds in Earth's history. It was heard over something like 1/8 of the planet's surface.

What makes this volcano even more rare is that it's initial "birth" through the ocean's surface was caught on film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5knaCKTRpc

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

What video game is this from? The graphics look awesome

[–]cadet999 1 point2 points ago

The explosion of krakatau destroyed an island and was heard in London but the atomic bombs destroyed cities and werent even heard in Tokyo so doesnt that mean the power of the explosion of krakatau was greater and much more powerful than the atomic bombs?

[–]ghosttrainhobo 0 points1 point ago

The 1883 eruption was estimated to be in the neighborhood of 200 megatons of TNT. The Hiroshima bomb was about 13 kilotons. So, Krakatoa works out to be about 154 times as powerful as Little Boy was.

This is a very good album btw

[–]vORP 3 points4 points ago

Why because it's an erupting volcano?

[–]elabsirhc 0 points1 point ago

Makes me think of donkey Kong country 3

[–]Fuhdawin 0 points1 point ago

Where in the world is this volcano?

[–]tritonx 2 points3 points ago

In Indonesia, between Java and Sumatra.

[–]nas_is_like 0 points1 point ago

WTF

[–]ThatDamonGuy 0 points1 point ago

I would have liked to see a pic of its big brother erupting...

[–]Cheskaz 0 points1 point ago

To the TARDIS!

[–]shifty1776 0 points1 point ago

Beautiful :)

[–]peepholecircus 0 points1 point ago

Usually when I see these great pics (so many of them) I just say that's nice and move onto the next. But damn, that's great. It's like the broken bridge from Evil Dead 2 set in Jurassic Park directed by Stanley Kubrick. Upvoted.

[–]Goldmine44 0 points1 point ago

I love the perspective in this picture.

[–]AlbinoTunalips 0 points1 point ago

You should walk in front of that driftwood and then take the picture.
- Look at this picture I took through a hole in my shoe! Its so artsy!

[–]Akael 0 points1 point ago

Hurry, someone get the obsidian so we can make a portal to the nethers!

[–]Vaeltaja 0 points1 point ago

Imagine the awesome fish tank you could have with the driftwood/drifttree.

[–]LimitForce 0 points1 point ago

This was my first thought as well.

[–]EgoFlyer 0 points1 point ago

That's a gorgeous shot.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

[–]weaver2109 0 points1 point ago

I would like a picture of the eruption of Krakatoa, please.

[–]saltytrey 0 points1 point ago

While they had cameras back then, anyone close enough to have taken a picture would have been killed by the eruption, the shockwave, the resultant tsunami, the ash fall, the pyroclastic flow, ect.

[–]weaver2109 0 points1 point ago

I know, that's why I want a picture of it. :)

[–]Inderrrs 0 points1 point ago

Kind of looks like you're stranded on an island and are using up the rest of your battery juice on Reddit instead of calling help. Lol

[–]saltytrey 0 points1 point ago

Go to Google Earth and locate Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java.

Zoom out and tell me that it doesn't make you think that repeated cataclysmic eruptions of Krakatoa has blown one long island in two.

It happened before. It will happen again,

[–]jennibabe 0 points1 point ago

This is what I imagined for the Hunger Games Arena.

[–]SweetCreamButter 0 points1 point ago

[–]Mister_big_duck 0 points1 point ago

[–]Broville 0 points1 point ago

They should rename Krakatau, SohCahToa to make trigonometry more explosive!

[–]shitty_lineart 1 point2 points ago

[–]pagaladmee 0 points1 point ago

change your name to shitty_watercolor_lineart, and maybe the ass suckers would start upvoting you, maybe.

[–]P9J0S6 0 points1 point ago

Thought it said Anal Krakatau.

[–]gothicasshole 0 points1 point ago

If you attempt anal after some spicy food you might just get some lava on your log.

[–]mechanicus 0 points1 point ago

Me too. And I clicked on it anyway. God help me, I clicked on it anyway.

[–]jacqueofalltrades -4 points-3 points ago

Dammit, read that is Eruption of Anal Crack. Was disappointed.
