Im from Florida and it was "too dangerous" to throw our hats into the air at graduation..

[–]Duallity 92 points93 points ago

I'm from Florida, and we got to toss our hats, but the kid that truffle shuffled across stage actually wasn't given his diploma until a year after when they gave up on trying to make him apologize.

EDIT - Just thought everyone should know this poor kids name was Brian. :O

[–]imbignate 33 points34 points ago

That's bad luck, Brian

[–]GrizzlyAdams90 2 points3 points ago

I'm a guy... from Florida... who truffle shuffles.... named Brian.... But I am not that Brian.

[–]Jax3R 0 points1 point ago

All because he shuffled? How sad.

[–]IronMaiden571 13 points14 points ago

Same for us in GA. The whole class said fuck it and did it anyways. It was overrated.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

the school threatened to withhold our diplomas since we would pick them up from tables outside of the building after the ceremony..bitches.

[–]IronMaiden571 6 points7 points ago

Same to us. They can't really stop an entire class from graduating though. Solidarity!

[–]PublicUrinator 4 points5 points ago

Ahhhuh. I've been down this road before. Everyone agrees to do something rebellious but when its time to strike suddenly they're all pretending not to know you. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, solidarity.

[–]weaver2109 1 point2 points ago

I took this pic in GA last week, all schools are different.

And I agree, it is overrated. We had a huge graduating class, so I had some trouble tracking down my cover after we threw them in the air.

[–]aareyes12 64 points65 points ago

It is pretty dangerous. While you look to catch your hat, boom. Zombie just ate your face

[–]TheLogicalErudite 5 points6 points ago

Yea I got the same lecture in South Florida.

[–]xbxmet14 4 points5 points ago

Same in VA...for both High School and College graduations

[–]jvinch76 7 points8 points ago

We got to do it. IT WAS GLORIOUS.

[–]DevinLuppy 3 points4 points ago

We weren't allowed to either in Georgia. And if you did than you didn't get your diploma. Also, if your parents cheered when they called out your name you didn't get it.

[–]AnorexicBuddha 1 point2 points ago

My school has a lot of cough cough rowdy kids so there is no way that would fly.

[–]DevinLuppy 5 points6 points ago

People still did it at my school, one family brought an air horn.

[–]CavitySearch 1 point2 points ago

God, not the air horn people. Seemed like half the parents of kids graduating high school had air horns.

[–]garunteedfresh 0 points1 point ago

that might have been your school. my school in GA did so with zero threats. there was even a spot in the hat to write your name so you could find it after throwing it.

[–]doyouunderstandlife 2 points3 points ago

I'm also from Florida and I was able to do it.

What are they going to do to keep you from throwing them? They won't take away your diploma, so what power do they have over you? I mean, they can throw you out, but by that point, wouldn't you be leaving anyway?

[–]OldAccWasCharlievil 0 points1 point ago

Several people have said that the university would refuse to give you your diploma. But I guess you still have the qualification just not the certificate to prove it.

[–]akumadiavolo 1 point2 points ago

Same thing here in Colorado.

[–]Lolwrd 1 point2 points ago

I'm from Florida and my graduations next werek..I better be able to throw my hat.

[–]Onotix 1 point2 points ago

I'm in Florida too and i just found out we can't do that either. They told us that it's because well damage the hats which we have to give back.

[–]chris113113 1 point2 points ago

I'm from Florida and this was our valedictorian. We also were allowed to throw our hats.

[–]Fraen 0 points1 point ago

THAT'S FUCKING AWESOME!

[–]unisaurrr 0 points1 point ago

holy fucking shit lake brantley. I went to your school, man.

[–]BobRedshirt 0 points1 point ago

The guy who organized our graduation told us the same thing, but with a smile and a wink, basically. "And after that, you DON'T hold your caps like THIS, and then you DON'T throw them in the air!"

[–]jpjones7 0 points1 point ago

Mine wasn't dangerous til i threw that baseball.

[–]superbuddr458 0 points1 point ago

Same shit at my school in Iowa

[–]magic_mermaids 0 points1 point ago

I'm from Maine and we weren't allowed to do it either.

[–]TheBrownLion 0 points1 point ago

Pennsylvania here, our principal said, "it was dangerous, So we should refrain from not throwing our not hats into the air. If we didn't throw our hats into the air, we should not throw them not straight up. And to never not look down after throwing them so as to not get hit in the eye."

-paraphrased but pretty close

[–]moderatelime 0 points1 point ago

Someone might feel threatened and then be completely justified in shooting you dead.

[–]nate92 41 points42 points ago

I'm from Southern California and we threw the shit out of our hats.

[–]derilyn 66 points67 points ago

You had shit in your hats?

[–]Greg636 4 points5 points ago

...............No!

Also, Obligatory link.

[–]K-Lynn 3 points4 points ago

This made me laugh way harder than it should have.

[–]alkapwnee 0 points1 point ago

I am from Southern California...the only shit that was thrown about was the event. Bleh. We didn't get to throw our hats...

[–]shillelagh 28 points29 points ago

Anyone care to edumacate me as to why Dinkle wasn't applauding with the rest? Just curious.

[–]mature_otter 16 points17 points ago

It was right before he was announced for his nomination and subsequent win for best supporting actor at the Golden Globes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCp_UF0fXQ4

[–]shillelagh 0 points1 point ago

Thank you. So nice to get a genuine answer to a genuine inquiry... I do love Dinkle.

[–]chewyice 12 points13 points ago

I would like to know this too. But if it's cause he doesn't do fake applauding then cheers to him.

[–]sher7ock 20 points21 points ago

I believe at that moment it was revealed that he was nominated for an award.

[–]chewyice 8 points9 points ago

Well, tis true he is very humble. So that makes more sense.

[–]helllomoto 15 points16 points ago

Well no matter how humble you are, clapping for yourself seems a bit over the top.

[–]Crawlerado 62 points63 points ago

We were told specifically NOT to throw ours, so naturally when everyone threw their hats I side armed mine at the cock sucker who got ALL THREE of my names wrong.

[–]Crocodilly_Pontifex 6 points7 points ago

Did you knock his off?

[–]ThirdFloorGreg 0 points1 point ago

I'm gonna guess he's not talking about one of his fellow matriculators.

[–]Crocodilly_Pontifex 4 points5 points ago

sometimes the guys on stage wear a cap and gown too

[–]jubbing[S] 46 points47 points ago

FYI I'm in Australia

[–][deleted] 100 points101 points ago

You were suppose to throw it at the ground.

[–]jubbing[S] 71 points72 points ago

Because i'm not a part of this system?

[–]tyler2k 51 points52 points ago

Mannnnnnnnnnn

[–]shroomprinter 16 points17 points ago

[–]jubbing[S] 9 points10 points ago

Thanks, that'll help those that didn't know what we were talking about lol

[–]space_island 10 points11 points ago

You still don't. They are referring to the joke that everything in Australia is upside down.

[–]jubbing[S] 2 points3 points ago

Yes, I got that. I was talking about how I changed the direction of the joke...

[–]space_island 0 points1 point ago

ah gotcha, I believe a whoosh may be in order.

[–]invaderkristin 7 points8 points ago

Happy birthday to the ground!

[–]jess_sp 7 points8 points ago

ɐıןɐɹʇsnɐ uı ɯ,ı ıʎɟ

[–]skyfighternz 0 points1 point ago

Ha! I'm from NZ and we threw ours. Yeah It's the little victories that count...

[–]MewsClues 0 points1 point ago

How do you know someone is from New Zealand?

[–]skyfighternz 0 points1 point ago

Is this a, 'they will tell you' joke?

[–]MewsClues 0 points1 point ago

Pretty much. It's really noticeable on Reddit outside r/NZ; Anything related to NZ in any way whatsoever someone will pipe up "Well, in NZ where I'm from/live..."

I'm guilty of it, trying to cut the habit and making others feel bad is my release.

[–]skyfighternz 0 points1 point ago

Fair enough, although others were also discussing their countries, I believe my comment was in response to someone identifying they are from Aussie.

Also, I do it partially because fuck america and their perceived dominance of everything. But yeah, I see your point.

[–]Lamar_Scrodum 12 points13 points ago

We were allowed to throw our hats until Oddjob graduated... thanks for ruining it for the rest of us, asshole!

[–]mralistair 9 points10 points ago

in scotland we dont even get the hats.

My mate from hong kong had to hire one especially for the photos otherwise his relatives wouldn't beleive he'd graduated from a proper university

[–]jubbing[S] 1 point2 points ago

I've heard that. Melbourne Uni in Melbourne don't give out hats either.

[–]dumbkid 1 point2 points ago

Yeah in the UK no one makes a fuss about any of this stuff, when high school finishes you just sort of, walk out the gates and dont come back, its strange

[–]BeatlesForSale 0 points1 point ago

In true British style. "Oh you've finished High School, cool, cool. Let's go to the pub or something."

[–]dumbkid 0 points1 point ago

Still, the lack of closure just feels strange, like you wake up sometimes and are about to start preparing to leave for school and its like "o shit I dont go there anymore". Most people I knew were too melancholy to get pissed

[–]BeatlesForSale 0 points1 point ago

Haha, I know that feel. The first Monday after leaving I got up at 7 in the morning and then thought "shit, I could have stayed in bed"

I only left High School last year and am now doing A-Levels. Everyone keeps saying how much they miss High School but I'm glad to have left. Sixth Form is so much better because the people who are there actually want to be there and aren't chavy cunts.

[–]dumbkid 0 points1 point ago

Yeah definitely, its weird when lessons never get interrupted so someone can stfu while the teachers talking. 6th form doesnt have as much piss taking and name calling which kind of sucks

[–]BeatlesForSale 0 points1 point ago

The teachers actually have a sense of humour too. You can make a joke at them and they'll laugh instead of suffering from a severe Napoleon Complex and shout at you for 5 mins to assert their dominance. Although it was always fun to get into an argument with particularly annoying teachers.

[–]blueocean43 0 points1 point ago

Didn't your school do leavers day pranks? You know, covering the toilets in cling film, carrying one of the teachers cars up into the hall, that sort of thing?

My school also had a leavers tea (with strawberries and champage on the headmistresses lawn), and a leavers dinner (which I don't really remember... free campagne.)

[–]dumbkid 0 points1 point ago

Some kid smashed up a teachers car with a golf club and got arrested if thats what you mean, otherwise no

[–]mralistair 0 points1 point ago

I thought this was university though not school

[–]dumbkid 0 points1 point ago

Americans throw parties when you find a remote control

[–]TheBeast1981 0 points1 point ago

Italian here, after our high school graduation (2000) we went to get our diplomas, casual dressed, there were some professors calling us and giving them. We waited sitting on the floor, or on some desks or chairs that were used for the final exams. No fucks were given about some sort of ceremony.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

at Edinburgh Uni, they use the one hat and put it on everyone's heads

[–]dragn99 1 point2 points ago

What if someone has lice?

Or hasn't showered all week?

I don't like sharing hats...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

this has crossed my mind too

[–]blueocean43 0 points1 point ago

They don't actually put it on the head, they just sort of whack you on the head with it. It was very strange.

[–]blueocean43 1 point2 points ago

More like whack everyone over the head with the same hat, rather than put it on.

[–]jubbing[S] 0 points1 point ago

That.. is ridiculously gross.

[–]austinanimal 10 points11 points ago

We weren't allowed, so I got a plan together. I was sort the of the class clown/asshole of the class. It was put together than we'd each have 1-2 cans of silly string in our pockets or a bag under the gowns. When it came time that they announced our class around 100 of us pulled out silly string and let the entire cans rip. This was high school graduation in 1996.

It was glorious.

[–]vicstuhhh 2 points3 points ago

They told us not to throw our hats, but they couldn't do anything about it. So we threw them! I'm pretty sure the cap I took home was not mine haha.

[–]S1ayer 2 points3 points ago

In High School my mom wanted to save my outfit. I didn't throw my hat because I was afraid I wouldn't get it back.

I was a weird kid.

[–]brookelyn 2 points3 points ago

When our class received the OK to throw them, I reached back and pulled hard. It was only then that I remembered I pinned the cap to my hair...

[–]cwall1 15 points16 points ago

Im american, we didn't get to throw our hats- actually i've only ever seen one class do it!

[–]macthecomedian 40 points41 points ago

i tossed my hat on graduation, AMA

[–]Luke273 5 points6 points ago

Did you survive the ordeal?

[–]macthecomedian 6 points7 points ago

we lost a few good people that day, but it was worth it.

[–]FalloutRip 13 points14 points ago

Thats odd, my class did it even though we were told not to. Then again, they handed us our diplomas after we walked across the stage, so there wasn't anything to stop us from doing so.

[–]jubbing[S] 4 points5 points ago

My cousin did in the US when he was there, so did my friend who was on exchange.

[–]TheLogicalErudite 5 points6 points ago

Yea a lot of states banned it because people kept getting hurt. We were actually forbidden from doing it and if we did we wouldn't receive our diplomas (Which is obviously crap, they were trying to scare us.)

[–]Xtremeloco 11 points12 points ago

The idea of people getting hurt by falling graduation hats makes me laugh.

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 6 points7 points ago

At my school everyone sharpened their hats before we threw them. "Builds character."

[–]UpTheIron 2 points3 points ago

Character? Builds fucking bond villains!

[–]MrDribbles 1 point2 points ago

I hid a hand grenade in mine, it was glorious.

[–]Confucius_says 0 points1 point ago

i dont think its the hats, its that eveyrone start moshing about to catch the hats and stuff. it becomes like a moshpit. which is very dangerous.

I mean cmon we live in a society where we put warning labels on coffee.

[–]warcin 2 points3 points ago

Yeah they told us not to do it as well. We just ignored them and did it anyway

[–]Razzmatazz13 2 points3 points ago

They told us at graduation practice this morning that we could throw our hats, but it's at our own risk- there's no garuntee we'll get it back.

[–]thesundeity 1 point2 points ago

we were allowed to, just told not to throw them too hard.

[–]MillardFillmore13 0 points1 point ago

My graduating class threw our hats this year. That being said, I go to music school and the graduation was pretty lax overall.

[–]Deathblow92 0 points1 point ago

We can in Minnesota as far as I know. I did just last year.

[–]cheebromeej 0 points1 point ago

We weren't allowed to throw our hats either. Instead we all threw glitter in the air.

[–]MJZMan 2 points3 points ago

Firstly, it's not just any 'hat', it's called a mortarboard.

Secondly, they're only thrown once, and that's at the very end of the ceremony after the flipping of the tassels and the "official announcement" that you've graduated.

Thirdly, if it has been banned in any school districts, you have my condolences for living amongst uptight assholes.

[–]jubbing[S] 0 points1 point ago

Do you really think this post would have gotten as many upvotes if I had called it a mortarboard! ;)

[–]Ambush_24 1 point2 points ago

We were told not too as well maybe college will be different

[–]shebillah 1 point2 points ago

It's okay. I lost my hat and I can't remember if I even had it after graduation or not!

[–]DutchInfid3l 1 point2 points ago

My HS did. Granted this was like 12 years ago. We "rented" the gowns from Jostens. They were all packaged with the cap, but we had to turn them in, in order to receive our "actual" diploma. We were handed a rolled up piece of paper for the ceremony out on the football field, the note said "report to the gym for your diploma", we did get to keep the cap, I didn't throw mine that high so I could keep my own and catch it.

[–]Weezyfb 0 points1 point ago

Same here. We got some blank piece of paper. Ours was report to the Cafeteria for diploma

[–]tivo17 0 points1 point ago

Fuck that. We got a little book thing that didn't have anything in it. After the ceremony we went to the gym and they gave us the paper you put in to it.

[–]farfrmsane 1 point2 points ago

Can someone tell me where this is from? =)

[–]nerfarenablast 1 point2 points ago

I'm from Minnesota and we were told that if we threw our hats, we would be escorted out of the ceremony.. :(

[–]sadwer 0 points1 point ago

In high school they said they'd withhold the diploma. Though really, I don't even know where my high school diploma is any more, and I don't think I've ever actually used it for anything - student records are what everybody wants now.

[–]sonvincent 1 point2 points ago

I've had 3 graduations in my life with gowns, and in none of them was there hat throwing. HOLLYWOOD LIES AGAIN!

[–]sadwer 1 point2 points ago

On the other hand, the red solo cups at parties thing is absolutely true. I guess it all evens out in the end.

[–]sonvincent 0 points1 point ago

so true.

[–]Lord_Cthulhu 1 point2 points ago

Graduating in 2 hours, I shall throw that cap like a fuckin pro.

[–]fishebulb 1 point2 points ago

They try to ban that practice but honestly who pays attention to the empty threats

[–]rylos 1 point2 points ago

My son graduated high school a few days ago, he got a better hat this way. Redneck graduate

[–]jcsimpson 1 point2 points ago

Can someone explain the context of this to me? Why is Peter so unenthusiastic?

[–]desne 1 point2 points ago

I just graduated from high school in Massachusetts. We had bubbles, air horns, beach balls, and paper airplanes. Threw the caps up after as well. Shit was fun and exciting. Even hit the beach balls into the crowd as well sometimes.

[–]Confucius_says 1 point2 points ago

you know a lot of schools in america dont have this "tradition" its more of just a movie cliche than a widespread thing that actually happens.

[–]icalledshotgun 1 point2 points ago

Halfman! Halfman! Halfman!

[–]draxxil 1 point2 points ago

I'm American and I've graduated 3 times in 2 states. Never once was there hat-throwing. I've actually been to tons of graduations at 6 different schools and I've never seen a whole class do that.

[–]P0w3r0fGray5kull 0 points1 point ago

where was this?

[–]jubbing[S] 4 points5 points ago

Australia like I said below :)

[–]ElPolloRico 7 points8 points ago

Now it's above!

[–]lobzo 11 points12 points ago

Just like Australia, in Australia!

[–]pedanticprimate 5 points6 points ago

Well played...

[–]jubbing[S] 3 points4 points ago

+1 you got the pun intended as well.

[–]redinator 0 points1 point ago

Where is this gif from?

[–]jubbing[S] 0 points1 point ago

Oscars I believe

[–]bloort 2 points3 points ago

This is the Golden Globes. Oscars are in a traditional theatre setting, while the Golden Globes are more of a dinner party feel. The bloated, a little drunky after dinner part is the actual awards.

I would gladly trade this information for the reason why he reacted the way he did. Anyone?

[–]Bee_Kamiya 3 points4 points ago

It's Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones. What someone said when I first saw this GIF is that he didn't clap because he was the one being nominated. Sounds legit.

[–]jubbing[S] 1 point2 points ago

Ah thanks, it was one or the other and I wasn't sure. Reaction? No idea but I'd like to find out as well.

[–]pedanticprimate 0 points1 point ago

We're able to do it in GA, but I'd assume it's a school to school basis. Although I did hear something about it being to dangerous because the hats are "pointy."

[–]Weezyfb 0 points1 point ago

We were told not to do it. We did it anyway!

[–]Gerace 0 points1 point ago

We threw our hats for high school graduation (American here). In fact, I think they may have even mentioned that we should do it when the time comes.

I kept an eye on which hat was mine though, fuck some other nigga taking MY hat.

[–]rye131 0 points1 point ago

I didn't get to throw my hat at graduation. We instead sprayed cans of silly string on each other. That made for interesting walk off when my high heels hit the gym floor.

[–]luckyratfoot 0 points1 point ago

I tried to throw mine in the air. I ending up hitting someone directly in the head with it. Really hard.

[–]usernameidea 0 points1 point ago

If it makes you feel better, we didn't get to throw hats at my graduation because they didn't want us to hurt each other. We got to throw carnations, I don't know why they're considered better.

I also remember in middle school on the last day of school that didn't let you bring anything to school besides your yearbook and a pencil because in the past kids used to rip apart their notebooks and leave a huge mess.

[–]jigenx 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, here in Vegas as far as i know everyone is told they cannot throw the hat. You have to show your hat with your name in it after graduation to get your diploma.

[–]dezweb 0 points1 point ago

Not only were we allowed to throw our caps, but our educators even had a system for returning the caps to the rentals. After the caps were thrown and lying on the ground, we were to pick up the first cap we found and return it.

[–]your21girl 0 points1 point ago

i'm from md and we were specifically told that if we threw our hats, that they would take our diplomas and send us to a summer course on respect and safety to get it back.

[–]Tito_Lebowitz 0 points1 point ago

We did the hat throw as well as silly string, air horns, and party poppers. There is just something about throwing your hats in the air that is indescribable.

[–]GiJoeSamo 0 points1 point ago

Which award ceremony was this from?

edit never-mind i actually read the comments this time

[–]HaV0C 0 points1 point ago

I'm from Chicago and I turned in my hat on stage in exchange for my diploma.

[–]alecyo12 0 points1 point ago

They said we could hurt each other here

[–]DefinitelyPositive 0 points1 point ago

What is the story behind that gif? Why is he not happy?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Two kids from my high school didn't get their diplomas for 6 months because they threw their hats into the air. Zero tolerance rules are so damned stupid.

-These students were unable to enroll in university for a full year because of the incident. It also destroyed their scholarships and one guy wasn't even able to pay for school in the end. He works for $10/hr at a grocery store and he's 24. Other guy just recently graduated with a B.S., doesn't have a job.

[–]unvisiblezedd 0 points1 point ago

We were given little glow sticks to throw for my high school graduation and they shut off the lights right after they read the last person's name (incidentally a friend of mine). It was pretty freakin awesome. We'd also had a class slow-clap before we entered the coliseum. For college graduation, no one banned it but only about 3 people threw their caps. Basically, my high school graduation totally owned my college graduation.

[–]sadwer 0 points1 point ago

I've had three commencement ceremonies in the U.S. - high school, bachelor's, graduate degree - and in each one the throwing of hats was forbidden (well, I guess in college "forbidden" is too strong a word; they politely asked us not to).

[–]benw24 0 points1 point ago

In Ireland, men do not wear mortarboards at commencement. And we use different words for stuff.

[–]KotaB 0 points1 point ago

I graduated in Scotland and we weren't allowed to wear them either (men or women). Instead you are "capped" by the Dean of the University, who taps you on the head with one.

[–]Qurtys_Lyn 0 points1 point ago

They told us we couldn't throw our hats at graduation. So then it became a free for all to try and throw other people's hats instead.

[–]2012graduate 0 points1 point ago

I'm from WI and we don't do that stupid shit. Just got my B.A.

[–]werty0u 0 points1 point ago

We didn't throw our hats in the are either. I graduated from a school in New York.

[–]cgrisier732 0 points1 point ago

We were told not to throw our hats in high school, the entire class did anyways. Stick it to the man!

[–]ScruffySaysMhm 0 points1 point ago

Im about to jump in the shower, and then go graduate. I'm from California and they won't let us throw our hats.

[–]jas0nb 0 points1 point ago

Unless someone in a graduating class happens to be a relative of Odd Job, I see no reason why they could claim that it's dangerous to throw hats. It's a graduation, if you aren't wary of the fact that hats will be thrown and you get hit/injured by one, I have a Darwin Award for you.

[–]Pheeshy 0 points1 point ago

They gave us flowers to throw instead. It was dumb.

[–]Chefbexter 0 points1 point ago

I just graduated from college and we didn't do that either. Instead, for fun, we had a commencement speaker that managed to alienate almost everyone in the room.

[–]moonyew 0 points1 point ago

Do it anyway! Tell them you are doing some kind of study on other cultures and part of that is graduating like they do. They may even respect you for it. Probably not though...

[–]Mad_broccoli 0 points1 point ago

I got my diploma in a hallway. True story.

Out of all the graduations I've been to, only one school actually threw their hats. Principal told them to do it. It was neat.

In Indiana, we weren't allowed to cause it was "too dangerous". Complete bullshit. It was one of the only things I was looking forward to at the ceremony.

[–]ViciousPuddin 0 points1 point ago

Yeah... I was one of those sad-sacks that got hit right in the eye with the pointy end of the hat at my graduation. Not fun. I guess they could make the hats round? Yay! Round hats for everyone!

[–]Moatt 0 points1 point ago

too dangerous to HAVE hats at my graduation.

[–]trustedsource 0 points1 point ago

I'm American and we weren't allowed to throw our hats at graduation, not that it stopped me.

[–]Yarpy 0 points1 point ago

Canadian here. We threw our hats. Made for an awesome photo.

[–]TheBigTwo 0 points1 point ago

No one noticed that this is an animated jpg?

(fwiw, imgur doesn't give a fuck about file extensions as long as they're of the accepted types)

[–]whenuseeit 0 points1 point ago

I don't know if we were allowed or not (I didn't hear anything about it), but at the University of Maryland they gave us streamers to throw when we would normally toss our hats. Similar effect, no lost hats.

FWIW, my high school, which is in NY, did toss hats.

From Ontario, Canada. Threw those hats, hit with many.

[–]squeaker5555 0 points1 point ago

I'm from California we weren't allowed to throw hats or anything fun or we wouldn't get our diplomas.

[–]cheruchan 0 points1 point ago

Every crazy fucked up story I've heard has come from Florida.

[–]revolverocelot 0 points1 point ago

You were a LITTLE unimpressed. Bahahahaha

[–]toughluck1 0 points1 point ago

We didn't even get hats for ours, i felt so dejected afterwards...

[–]Hammythepirate 0 points1 point ago

I'm in Seattle and our graduation is in 2 weeks. We can't throw our hats in the air either, apparently it "takes away from the ceremony". Last year someone showed up wearing a snuggie and they weren't even allowed to walk on stage.

[–]papasuckle55 0 points1 point ago

Im from New Jersey, and we didn't throw our hats at college graduation this year, but four years ago at HS grad, we did.

[–]rasmusca 0 points1 point ago

i'm american and i was surprised on my graduation day to find out that people actually do that IRL. I honestly thought it was a movie thing...

[–]sk4t4nic 0 points1 point ago

If you throw your hat in Utah you supposedly don't get your diploma. That didn't stop almost all of the seniors at graduation today.

[–]peted1884 0 points1 point ago

We certainly threw them at high school graduation. We rather hesitantly threw them at college graduation. I didn't attend any ceremony for graduate school.

[–]Mandon 0 points1 point ago

I just graduated yesterday from Mount Royal University and we did not throw our caps either. I was so disappointed... I was in the second to last row of the convocation group so me trying to start a throw would have done zero good except to make me look like an ass.

[–]commandodude1265 0 points1 point ago

...we do? I actually never knew that (or did it)...

[–]athael01 0 points1 point ago

I'm from Iowa and anyone who throws their cap doesn't receive their diploma unless they meet with the principal later on. It's a safety issue because of the sharp corners on the caps, apparently.

[–]intheglasses 0 points1 point ago

My class wore school uniform....

[–]SenorVajay 0 points1 point ago

At the Univ. of Arizona we throw tortillas instead of hats

[–]pomegranati 0 points1 point ago

At my school, I was the only one who threw my hat up at the end. I ended up losing that hat too.

[–]terminal_velocity 0 points1 point ago

I'm from Arizona, and we weren't allowed to throw our hats because it might take someone's eye out. Well what dumbs doesn't know to move if a pointy hat if falling at their face?

[–]The_Kaizz 0 points1 point ago

Mother fucking Tyrion Lannister. Forget the hat throwing, Game of Thrones takes precedence.

[–]SunDevils 0 points1 point ago

My class of 900 all tossed our hats up and beach balls during the ceremony

[–]murmur235 0 points1 point ago

You jelly, bro?

[–]Boom_Boom_Crash 0 points1 point ago

Most of my classmates threw their hats, but I don't get in the habit of throwing things I paid an assload of money for into the air for kicks. So I just got in my car and went home to take a nap.

[–]Ninsha 0 points1 point ago

Anyone know the context that this gif was made from?

[–]doopdidoop147 0 points1 point ago

I am American and we were not allowed to throw our hats during graduation because it is a "safety hazard". Obviously, it is common to stare up at a four-cornered object as it makes its way back down towards your eyeball. Those hats....just...too fast to dodge!
