I was gonna say, this whole thing looks incredibly dangerous. Too dangerous, in fact. And now I think it's fake. And now it looks fake. Can anybody confirm this shit?

[–]Sanic3 30 points31 points ago

Here is the full version.

[–]mang87 10 points11 points ago

Can't be real. He'd be seriously injured, wouldn't he?

[–]Palantir555 10 points11 points ago

Injured? Nah, he's wearing his safety glasses

[–]mrkowz 14 points15 points ago

Not real - watch the slomo. As soon as he starts getting thrown back, the door jumps instantly to being fully open. If it were thrown open that fast, it would bounce back out.

[–]JustRealTalk 2 points3 points ago

Also you can tell after the blast the sleeves of the coat start flapping wildly. It's just a dummy in the coat not him

[–]muonicdischarge 4 points5 points ago

Upon further review, the door does seem to be the most unrealistic thing here. Of course, the force with which he hit the wall, and the force of impact that would make him fly back that fast in the way he did would probably cause serious injury (at least to the neck or head). But the door just looks ridiculous.

[–]jbeta137 21 points22 points ago

It's a pneumatic cannon, which means a short, sustained blast of air. The Door is being blown into the wall, and the fact that this is a slightly sustained blast means that the air blowing on the door will be enough to stop it from rebounding. Looks weird, but it's what would actually happen (also, if you look the door slowly shuts after the blast is done).

[–]VinnydaHorse 1 point2 points ago

I think the door is plausible. Think of the metal arm at the top with the joint in the middle. With enough force that could overextend to a point where it can't easily be pushed back.

However, I think it's fake because one would expect his lab coat to fly back much more readily than him, yet in the video, it doesn't move at all. At the very least it should fly behind him at the initial blast before his body follows with him.

[–]PixyFreakingSticks 1 point2 points ago

No, no, it wouldn't have just stopped perfectly still like that, not as hard as it opened. Besides, look at where the blast is coming from. It would have to be going almost sideways to apply the kind of force you're talking about. It just doesn't add up.

Plus, the guy's movement while being fired backwards and the door itself while moving (and not bouncing) look fake. Fake like a CGI Spider-Man.

[–]JeriMouse 0 points1 point ago

Actually, since they stuffed numerous object into the cannon, it makes sense that his lab coat didn't go with him. The objects hit him before the air was able to get to him.

[–]SkinTape -1 points0 points ago

Also it seems fake because they are shooting a pneumatic cannon at a door.

[–]Raneados -3 points-2 points ago

Even if you believe the instantaneous opening of the door, there's no recoil as it hits the wall.

Look around at the people next to the cannon, and the reflections on EVERYTHING, all the windows change, they all take a quick shift at the exact moment of firing. And EVERYTHING shifts slightly brighter.

There's even a behind the scenes to this video to "prove" it's real, but it's not.

(also, if you look the door slowly shuts after the blast is done)

no it doesn't, put your mouse cursor on it

[–]muonicdischarge -2 points-1 points ago

If it's a short, sustained blast that had enough force to knock the man back that hard, then it would probably knock the door back as hard as it did. The problem is, it seems the door just stops. Now I suppose that could have something to do with the man's hand being on the door as he's being shot by the cannon, but I doubt that would have much of an effect without swinging the man off to the left (if he held on very long). Since the man is shot straight back and the door is only slightly in the way of the blast, it would probably be moving after the man flies back. The only forces acting on the door are the cannon, the man's arm pulling on it for however long he might have held on (again, seems he let go right after getting hit), friction, and perhaps the restitution if it were to hit a wall or doorstop. It doesn't seem to hit the wall or anything, so let's narrow it down to friction and the blast. Based on the speed at which the door initially moves after the blast and the average friction of a door's hinge, that door would have to have REALLY sticky hinges to do what it did.Considering he opens the door with relative ease, I doubt it. At the very end of the gif, it would have at least been slowly closing and would have bounced off of the wall; it would not have just stopped after moving about a foot or so, given the full force of the cannon literally launched a 150 to 200 pound (presumably) man at that speed. Now, if you can explain any other variables I'm not taking into play here that would make it do this then perhaps I'll believe it, but this seriously seems like a gag video or something. Funny as all hell though.

[–]riffraffs 0 points1 point ago

Other than the door has a door closer on it (the silver box on the top of the door). These tend to dampen any movement of the door, probably including any bounce back.

[–]muonicdischarge 0 points1 point ago

It took me a second to get what you were talking about, but yeah, that would seriously dampen its movement. Although, I'm pretty sure that would also close the door slowly afterward anyway.

[–]Rheaonon 0 points1 point ago

A lot of the time these have a groove in them so you can open the door all the way and leave it open if you want. Like you would want it to stay open if you're moving a bunch of items in to/out of the room. Just a theory.

[–]Thargz 1 point2 points ago

His body also seems to accelerate a fraction after the initial impact.

[–]discoloda 0 points1 point ago

Also, the guy on the left of the cannon does shift slightly at the same time as the door jumping.

[–]naruo7 -2 points-1 points ago

not no

[–]tweezyb 1 point2 points ago

When he is flying backwards it looks like an empty lab coat flying backwards. There is no person in it at all, or it is very bad CG.

[–]Sanic3 3 points4 points ago

I imagine it hurt like hell but I'm not sure it would cause any internal injury.

[–]mang87 9 points10 points ago

He was being knocked back into a solid wall by the look of it. Could easily hit his head and receive a concussion or worse, especially at that speed.

Although I suppose co-workers can be dicks so there is also that to take into account.

[–]KickAssCommie 5 points6 points ago

It was a row of lockers so the thin metal would bend, thus softening the impact to a degree.

[–]mang87 2 points3 points ago

Sure the doors are rather malleable and would cushion the impact, but what if he hits his head off the harder outer frame of the locker? He could quite easily suffer a severe injury or be killed. The door is closed so the people on the other side of the door cannot see what the guy is doing, he could have anything in his hands, whether it's a glass cup/object that would shatter and cut him to bits, or even just his phone which might break and be quite costly to replace.

There is far too much risk involved in this prank for any sane person to actually pull it on someone. Has to be fake.

[–]KickAssCommie 0 points1 point ago

Oh I don't doubt it is, I was just pointing out that he probably didn't hit a solid wall. If it is, somehow, real then I'm guessing the end was sped up simply by the motion of the door.

[–]mang87 1 point2 points ago

Ah, right. Fair point.

[–]AgentMull 0 points1 point ago

Not sure those are lockers... Theres a gap between the two white things. That gap moves when he hits it the same way a piece of foam would. So either those are lockers made out of foam, or foam.

[–]Sanic3 2 points3 points ago

It's lockers he is knocked into. Like I said, I'm sure it hurt like hell but It's not impossible.

[–]jack2012fb 0 points1 point ago

i think he would be dead?

[–]NotBaldwin 3 points4 points ago

[–]redmercuryvendor 11 points12 points ago

It is fake. It makes the same mistake so many other amateur SFX artists do: ignorance of inertia. A human body will not accelerate that quickly without losing bits of itself, and especially not with the minimal amount of folding shown in the gif. Additional giveaways are the Perfectly Inelastic Doorstop, and the man's flat trajectory (just because you're moving fast horizontally, doesn't mean you don't fall down at exactly the same rate as usual).

[–]PixyFreakingSticks 2 points3 points ago

Bam. /thread

[–]THE_APE_SHIT_KILLER 1 point2 points ago

This is obviously fake, the door just gets stuck 2 feet ajar when it should have bounced back. Also, in the video it shows a shelf to the right where objects seems to shift implying a cut in the video.

[–]lettenj 0 points1 point ago

Why is this getting downvoted?

[–]PixyFreakingSticks -3 points-2 points ago

Aha, good catch. The door is a dead giveaway.

[–]squeakyneb 0 points1 point ago

It was fake. Special effects'd.

[–]RewindHoodie -2 points-1 points ago

It's called visual effects actually - CGI.

Special effects, or physical effects, are things like rain, snow, fire, wind, fog, and explosions.

Dropping knowledge.

[–]tyr02 0 points1 point ago

Otherwise I would worry about massive internal injuries

[–]FlareHeart -2 points-1 points ago

Here's the long winded explanation. It is indeed fake. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFAwxo01Ang

[–]gabe_ 0 points1 point ago

umm... what exactly is fake?

[–]FlareHeart -2 points-1 points ago

It was a prank. The canon fired styrofoam at him, the "flying across the room" portion was all edited in because they thought it would be funny. I apologize, I thought this was the long version that explained that, but apparently it is not. The guys who posted this originally posted two versions, this one and one with an explanation/commentary that explained what they did and why.

I thought this was the latter. Sorry for the poor linkage on my part.

[–]gabe_ 0 points1 point ago

Ahh.... OK, cool.

Does this qualify for worker comp.?

[–]p_wats 2 points3 points ago

Hell, it probably qualifies his wife to cash in the life-insurance policy.

[–]HomelessHercules 1 point2 points ago

Does that mean she's available now?

[–]OMROKER 0 points1 point ago

Totally...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I love that quarter-second "OH CRAP" flinch he does right before it fires.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I swear, I've seen so many people die on Reddit and Imgur, that I'm becoming completely insensitive.

[–]FlareHeart 2 points3 points ago

Thankfully this one is fake. There is a long version showing that it was mostly special effects.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFAwxo01Ang

[–]nin_ninja 1 point2 points ago

This should probably be under r/funny

[–]Billy_Blaze 1 point2 points ago

Why is everyone breaking down the physics and mechanics of this when it looks fake as fuck..?

I mean really... I don't need a full blown analysis of the door's motion with respect to the air blast to notice the less-than-professional CGI.

[–]Cralineleader 1 point2 points ago

FUS RO DAHHHHHHH!!!!

[–]tehgama95 1 point2 points ago

Hi I'm Bill Nye! Welcome to Jackass!

[–]SqeeSqee 3 points4 points ago

This is Fake like many point out, But here's a clear reason why:

  • He is off center when the cannon fires. Meaning the cannon is aiming for his left arm and NOT the center of his chest. this is clear.

  • This means when he gets blown back, he should be moving to the right side of the door. His body is at an angle and so the air pressure, looking for the fastest way around him, would push him to the side to get out of the way, since he is not centered

  • Instead you see a cartoonish transition of him clearly being jerked in the wrong direction.

[–]epicmoo 0 points1 point ago

Fake, watch the guy in background (the pranker) during slow motion right as door slams — it jumps to new camera shot.

[–]jbernardshaw 0 points1 point ago

It's a good thing they were wearing proper ear protection. Wouldn't want anyone to have gotten hurt.

[–]realityfracture 0 points1 point ago

It may be fake but it doesn't mean I do not desire a cannon like this

Does any one know if that guy got seriously injured? He definitely got the wind knocked out of him and probably some whiplash.

[–]jjness 5 points6 points ago

Looks like he got wind knocked into him!

[–]FlareHeart 2 points3 points ago

Considering it's fake, he's fine:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFAwxo01Ang

[–]MonkeysDontEvolve 0 points1 point ago

How is it fake? I just watched that whole video and it seemed legit.

[–]FlareHeart 0 points1 point ago

I remember when this video came out initially, there was a long version that had an explanation at the end that it was all staged, and the prank did take place, but instead of firing him across the room, it covered him in the styrofoam fluff that you see in the original video. They staged the huge "flying into the locker" thing because it would be funny.

I thought that this "long version" was that one with the explanation, but apparently not. Sorry.

[–]ookgoed[!] -1 points0 points ago

It you look at some of the youtube videos like this one mention here a couple of times it seems he is able to crawl and is about to attemped to stand up so my gues is that it isnt that bad
