John Deer: Well Jane, this is where we usually cross, but the sign is gone. The humans must have moved it without telling us.

Jane Doe: You are always blaming the humans. Are you sure you are reading the map right? Can you just stop and ask for directions?

John: No, I'm telling you they moved it. I know these trails like the back of my hoof. Let's just continue down the road until we find the sign.

Jane: sighs Fine.. you're as stubborn as your father.

Edit:etan_causale animated this comment, but he's a little buried.

[–]KingOfCopenhagen 159 points160 points ago

My faith in humanity is intact, my faith in deer however is somewhat crushed. Stupid deer.

[–]misterpickles69 132 points133 points ago

Stupid deer are usually crushed.

[–]fractalife 10 points11 points ago

Or fly straight up into the air, if they find themselves on an expressway. Never could find the poor guy after that. Sad day.

[–]finkalicious 1 point2 points ago

Usually with my Canyonero.

[–]kgarring 15 points16 points ago

stupid deer need the most attention!

[–]KngHrts2 16 points17 points ago

No deer left behind!

[–]etan_causale 36 points37 points ago

Crap. It took too long for me to do this. It's probably gonna get buried. Anyway, here's MY ILLUSTRATION OF YOUR STORY.

Enjoy.

[–]Wierdmin 3 points4 points ago

Not a novelty...

not obviously whoring for karma...

contributing...

You have my approval!

[–]RedTiger013 10 points11 points ago

Your comment makes me wonder why we call an unidentified woman "Jane Doe" but we don't call an unidentified man "John Deer"..

[–]rusemean 9 points10 points ago

I know no one cares, but actually, 'John Doe' as a placeholder existed first, and 'Jane Doe' was simply a feminization of it.

[–]bakinwithbacon 52 points53 points ago

The last line... yes.

[–]imisscollege 42 points43 points ago

I see a long future for this gif, welcome to your new home.

I have an idea! I'll make up a dialogue between some deer pretending they are intelligent and can understand crossing signs!

opens comments thread...looks at top comment

damn it. every time.

[–]MehPlusRawr 19 points20 points ago

Reddit's just a race between thousands of people with exactly the same idea.

[–]crisiscrayons 10 points11 points ago

Like real life but usually more funny.

[–]twinarteriesflow 1 point2 points ago

This just might be bestof worthy, but I don't want to be the one who submits it and subsequently looks like an idiot if it's not.

[–]m1asma[S] 20 points21 points ago

It's the thought that counts, honest!

[–]dracy69 23 points24 points ago

yea! to be fair his John Deer/Jane Doe naming is infinitely more clever than my Deer1/Deer2 idea.

[–]Dildo_Ball_Baggins 9 points10 points ago

I was going to go with Deer and Deerer.

Dat creativity.

[–]WhipIash 4 points5 points ago

One does not receive karma for the thought alone.

[–]thndrchld 1 point2 points ago

Why are you telling him this? Did he buy you a shitty sweater for your birthday or something?

[–]WhipIash 1 point2 points ago

There's a dialog between intelligent deer in the top comment ever time?

[–]MediocreJerk 3 points4 points ago

The Deers?

[–]jxj24 2 points3 points ago

Are then hit by a John Deere.

[–]lalnyy8 2 points3 points ago

Deer John, John Deer was killed today by a John Deere.

[–]Eternique 1 point2 points ago

Am I the only one who immediately thought of Team Fortress 2's Soldier when I saw the name Jane Doe!?

[–]solidsnakem9 1 point2 points ago

Wow I just realized how awesome those generic names can be. John Deer needs to be the new default filler name.

[–]sleepydozer 1 point2 points ago

John Doe and his male ego. Im willing to bet he actually is lost.

[–]ZBeebs 1 point2 points ago

Jane: Wait, here comes someone, go ask them.

John: Ok, fine, if it will make you happy....Hey, excuse me!...

Screech BAM

[–]TheJanks 5 points6 points ago

John : Jane, you ignorant slut!

[–]atheistjubu 1 point2 points ago

[–]degenk 5 points6 points ago

This is actually fairly old. And you are right. He did write it as a joke.

[–]dude187 10 points11 points ago

I'd always assumed it was about one of those actual deer crossings they have over highways. In areas where deer are really problematic, sometimes they completely fence in the highway and put a bridge across it for deer to use. That way the deer stay off the highway and don't try to jump the fence to get to the other side.

[–]Stunod7 5 points6 points ago

Unfortunately no. That road going in to Crown Point is a relatively small road that is flanked by wooded areas and there are just simply a lot of deer.

[–]THEmasterENT 2 points3 points ago

Thank god I can reinstate my faith is Crown Point. This almost made me up and move outta town tomorrow

[–]Stunod7 1 point2 points ago

I still did (Schererville now) but it wasn't because of this story :)

[–]vVvRickter 2 points3 points ago

The only thing good about Crown Point is Jolly Rogers.

[–]Stunod7 1 point2 points ago

ಠ_ಠ

[–]SlightlySlizzed 2 points3 points ago

Region rats

[–]prewfrock 1 point2 points ago

I can't understand why people don't automatically understand its a joke.

[–]Stunod7 1 point2 points ago

Because... Indiana?

[–]chuggles 1 point2 points ago

The real "no faith in humanity" is that so many are so desperate to raise themselves above others -- or they're so naive and or stupid -- that they can't see the obvious humor in posts like this.

[–]ios_k 276 points277 points ago

Absolutely no faith in humanity after reading this.

I think you are exaggerating, it's not like the deer were used as sex slaves.

[–]BrooklynBlue 57 points58 points ago

Though after reading this, we can't say for sure.

[–]derpaderp 16 points17 points ago

No, there are no signs allowing it.... yet

[–]not_prompt 14 points15 points ago

[–]derpaderp 5 points6 points ago

Not to worry.... Has a speed limit sign stopped you from speeding? I didn't think so

[–]plainOldFool 9 points10 points ago

I didn't even read that orangutang story and I know what you are referring to. Man, my morning is full of shudder.

[–]thisiswhywehaveants 1 point2 points ago

I felt as if there was a big whoosh in most of the replies to this comment.

[–]zenmunster 14 points15 points ago

Should be more like "Absolutely no faith in human intelligence after reading this"

[–]brnitschke 2 points3 points ago

[–]Johnnyash 4 points5 points ago

http://www.vice.com/read/yo1-v14n10

Posted in a TIL earlier...it's only a matter of time until the deer start getting it n the butt...umm

[–]Dildo_Ball_Baggins 1 point2 points ago

Bang-a-rang!

[–]overtmind 1 point2 points ago

Maybe not the deer but I hear /r/spaceclop might have something similar.

[–]netbiscuit 20 points21 points ago

This joke is actually really old. I'm surprised so many people still fall for it.

[–]I_am_not_angry 88 points89 points ago

I am so hoping he was trolling the paper....

[–]SqueamishCow 170 points171 points ago

He definitely was. Reddit needs to realize that everyone else in the world is not braindead...

[–]slatterboy 112 points113 points ago

No, you don't understand. Everyone on reddit is smart, everyone else is stupid. Didn't you get the memo?

[–]illusiveab 26 points27 points ago

WE ARE ELITE..OK?!?!

[–]CLThornet 3 points4 points ago

WE ARE THE 1%

[–]ksek 7 points8 points ago

But what if the letter was written... by a Redditor?!

[–]slatterboy 5 points6 points ago

Don't be ridiculous, if you do anything stupid, you get perma-banned from reddit. It's how they keep us pure.

[–]ObamaisYoGabbaGabba 1 point2 points ago

I wouldn't say everyone on reddit is smart, I am quite the dumb ass sometimes. But I assume the rest of you are super smart.

[–]6times9is42 10 points11 points ago

Nah man. We're like mensa but totally underground. When does the narwhal bacon again?

[–]jxj24 2 points3 points ago

ike mensa but totally underground

Densa.

[–]Anticitizen-Zero 1 point2 points ago

Yes, but then how can we constantly be losing faith in humanity and them having it restored on reddit?

[–]RockofStrength 17 points18 points ago

Never attribute to stupidity that which is adequately explained by trolling.

[–]I_am_not_angry 1 point2 points ago

If reddit allowed us to have a signature... That would be mine.

[–]sebzim4500 5 points6 points ago

Mine would be the opposite.

[–]Lampmonster1 24 points25 points ago

My mother and aunt had a contest to see who could get the dumbest thing printed in the local papers reader comments section. My aunt won with suggesting that all the trees along the local streets needed to be cut down because they made it too dark along those roads.

[–]ethics 7 points8 points ago

Reddit thinks that trolling is just for the internetz.

[–]jxj24 1 point2 points ago

I am pretty certain that there is some trolling going on in the first cave wall paintings.

[–]polishprince76 2 points3 points ago

He's not. I live in this area of Indiana and read the paper this is from on a daily basis. You could pick something this stupid out any day of the week.

[–]themicahnator 5 points6 points ago

I can confirm this. There was once one complaining about new roundabouts "causing an influx of swirling winds, increasing likelihood of tornadoes"...

[–]coffee_IV 1 point2 points ago

So many people from the Region claim to be better than the rest of the state. It's nice to know that it contains stupidity just like the rest of the state.

[–]Argi_ 3 points4 points ago

If they're talking about Crown Point, Indiana, then no. He wasn't trolling.

[–]RageCageRunner 7 points8 points ago

I don't think you understand life in states like Idaho/Montana/Wyoming. In many areas, they have deer crossing. Essentially it's a large portion of land that is fenced off with openings every 5-10 miles or so. This is to 'encourage' the deer to cross at places where they can put up deer crossing signs (to alert drivers).

We drivers are lazy and aren't always paying attention. If they can make the amount of time we have to watch for deer less, there will be fewer wrecks with them.

[–]Lord-Longbottom 4 points5 points ago

(For us English aristocrats, I leave you this 10 miles -> 80.0 Furlongs) - Pip pip cheerio chaps!

[–]MaskedAmoeba 5 points6 points ago

Ok, first of all this is the third or so time I've seen this repost.

Second, there's nothing strange/funny about this at all. Where I live (Colorado) there are several kinds of wildlife crossing where the animals only can cross in that location, it's not JUST a sign. For example, we have a crossing that consists of a gap in the two fences that run alongside the road. The deer can only cross in that one spot which can be moved by changing where the fence is open.

The deer also cannot just enter the street and walk parallel to it on the inside because there are these metal slats on either side of the crossing that the deer/cattle's hooves slip into (but cars can drive over), so they avoid stepping on it, thus creating a pathway for animals at one specific spot in the road.

[–]Corporate_Suit 20 points21 points ago

Because Indiana.

[–]Noek 19 points20 points ago

Man, even if he´s trolling or not, im pretty sure there are people out there that are this fucking stupid...

[–]Mr_Quagmire 35 points36 points ago

"Think about how stupid the average person is... and then realize that half of them are stupider than that." -George Carlin

[–]Carnilawl 4 points5 points ago

Whenever I read this, I get really pedantic and think, That's not true! You're confusing the mean with the median! And how do you know how smart the average person is anyway? Your anecdotal data is meaningless!

I'm kind of a pain.

[–]haddock420 1 point2 points ago

Technically "average" can mean mode, median or mean. It's just usually used for mean. So I think the quote's still right.

[–]Carnilawl 1 point2 points ago

I'm not sure if that's true. Googling 'definition average' indicates otherwise.

[–]haddock420 2 points3 points ago

The google definition only gives mean as a definition, but if you look at the Wikipedia page for Average, it gives mode and median too.

Many different descriptive statistics can be chosen as a measure of the central tendency of the data items. These include the arithmetic mean, the median, and the mode.

[–]Carnilawl 1 point2 points ago

Uh oh... Which Is the highest authority?

[–]SailorDeath 12 points13 points ago

No, there really are people that stupid in Crown Point. I'm willing to bet this guy lives in Lake of the Four Seasons which is a gated community full of people who think at this level. They're also the type of people who believe they're entitled to anything and everything because they're special.

Edit: You're right, just saying only people from Crown Point are that stupid is unfair. There are insanely stupid people in every city, state and nation on the planet. And We've all experienced an incredibly herpaderp moment for ourselves at one time or another. Most people though would realize how stupid what they said was before sending it into a newspaper.

[–]Noek 7 points8 points ago

"special"

[–]Clavis_Apocalypticae 1 point2 points ago

Also, Lake County in general.

[–]derpaderp 9 points10 points ago

OP got troled

EDIT - I'm impressed, thus far no one fell for my spell eror trolling bait.

[–]Vindictive29 3 points4 points ago

Your faith should not be discarded... simply revised.

My declaration of faith in humanity: There will never be a time when I am unamazed by human ability to achieve new levels of stupidity.

See... you can still have faith... you just have to change the legalese in the description.

[–]MocksYourBadPost 2 points3 points ago

Yes, lose your faith in all of humanity after reading one dumb persons idea.

ps. You come off just as damn as this guy by generalizing all of humanity from a sample of one person.

pps. Fuck off with the reddit-buzz-phrase title making yourself look like an idiot/douche whoring for karma.

[–]Goldmine44 11 points12 points ago

As in Crown Point, Indiana? I'm so ashamed.

[–]THEmasterENT 2 points3 points ago

And this makes our hometown hit front page. SMH

[–]Kevin5890 2 points3 points ago

From CP here as well... this is embarrassing.

[–]poopnstuff 5 points6 points ago

I'm from crown point, as well. What the fuck.

[–]jjjimmmy 1 point2 points ago

As am I. I assume Crown Point, IN is the only one that 231 travels through.

[–]HaberdasheryHRG 5 points6 points ago

I actually live in that area; it's northwest Indiana, near Chicago. And that part of that newspaper is the worst. It's like they intentionally only print the dumb, bigoted, and hateful blurbs that are submitted.

Not everyone around here is that dumb though. Honest.

[–]somethingisnotok 8 points9 points ago

There is a huge miscommunication here. This is a very correct idea because:

The road parts where deer crossing signs are placed are unfenced for about 100m for the animals to cross territory. If you'd get out of your car and try walking into a forest you will suddently notice the 2.5 m high fence blocking your way. It's mostly not visible from a car because they purposely hid them a little to not disturb the landscape. Fencing the open part and moving the gap to a less busy road, therefore moving the sign with, would logically solve the problem.

[–]fanboat 1 point2 points ago

Well what he said was "The deer crossing sign needs to be moved", specifically referring to the sign. He might be correct in that his intention can be accomplished, but he falls short of 'very' correct.

[–]hankemer 1 point2 points ago

Yes. So either the comment was from a sincere, knowledgeable person - or an ignorant troll.

[–]teeso 1 point2 points ago

Finally, someone sane in this thread. As someone who spent most of their teen years placing those goddamn fences there I now have a crater on my forehead from all the facepalms.

[–]lousku 2 points3 points ago

Yup. Almost everyone in this thread is clueless. You win.

[–]a4moondoggy 2 points3 points ago

Well i'm confused now. When i younger as i was driving to work one morning before school in the U.P. of Michigan i hit three deer one at a time and there were no signs.

[–]Iarwain_ben_Adar 2 points3 points ago

They were jay-walking then, so you would have been OK to take them home and eat them.

[–]shutting_down 2 points3 points ago

This reminds me that the park rangers at Yellowstone told us they get questions all the time about where they put the animals at night.

[–]ZanXBal 2 points3 points ago

I live in Crown Point..

[–]factorialite 2 points3 points ago

Crown Point is actually the town in which I was born, and I'm fairly sure this is old and definitely sure it's a joke.

[–]LazarWulf 2 points3 points ago

There are designated deer crossings where deer (and other animals I'm sure) are funneled to cross at certain places using fences. It seems like whoever wrote this for the newspaper thinks the signs have something to do with where the deer cross alone, but I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt that he also knows how designated deer crossings work and just didn't articulated it very well, or simplified it because maybe he had to pay per letter to get that published. But I won't rule out his ignorance and stupidity as well...it's very likely that he is as dumb as a bag of rocks.

[–]jschlo4 2 points3 points ago

pretty sure its a joke. and that joke is pretty old. and it is satirical in nature. But im just guessing.

[–]guest4000 2 points3 points ago

An obvious joke made you have zero faith in humanity?

[–]Neutr4lNumb3r 2 points3 points ago

I hate these fucking "losing faith in humanity" titles.

[–]YGSOUL 2 points3 points ago

Oh deer

[–]Goateater 25 points26 points ago

Deer me...

[–]glove88 20 points21 points ago

Doe'nt start with this

[–]CliveCorbz 14 points15 points ago

Could get stagnant pretty quickly.

[–]SailorDeath 16 points17 points ago

I'll give you a buck if you'll stop

[–]danvm 0 points1 point ago

Deer god, not another one of these threads...

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

This is obviously a joke, no one is really this clueless.

Edit for word choice

[–]amIstillHere 9 points10 points ago

new to the planet, eh?

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

Please don't tip anyone off, I just want to fit in with the humans

[–]mostexcellentben 1 point2 points ago

Almost the exact same thing was in my dad's newspaper a few years back. Twas a joke

[–]TheLoneWander101 3 points4 points ago

I have no faith in humanity for those that have no faith in humanity

[–]fuckyoutom 1 point2 points ago

His logic seems sound

[–]Sandite5 1 point2 points ago

Not sure who is trolling, Tim Abbott or m1asama...

[–]sje46 1 point2 points ago

It's a joke.

I lost faith in humanity because you didn't recognize the obvious joke.

Yes, it does happen that non-redditors say funny things sometimes.

[–]fortworthbret 1 point2 points ago

Please. this was trolling. I've heard the joke for 20 years.

[–]Biddy_Chang 1 point2 points ago

Well, I definitely wasn't expecting something from my hometown when I opened this... Fuck Indiana.

[–]BobIV 1 point2 points ago

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say meant...

"Most people hit deer to about a mile or so to the west of here. This is because there is to much traffic causing the deer to not even attempt to cross here. The signs should be moved to the west where the deer are crossing (due to lower traffic) so as to provide a better warning for the drivers."

I have no idea why the OP or so many commenters assumed he was talking about the deer reading the signs.

[–]calvhob91 1 point2 points ago

Does anyone else think that the "faith in humanity" posts are ridiculous, considering that they often contain very few people?

[–]strangerkindly 1 point2 points ago

indiana baby

[–]jimbo91987 1 point2 points ago

Not sure if humanity is the correct word here, but I definitely lost faith in something.

[–]sturg1dj 1 point2 points ago

how long have you been on the internet? A few weeks, right? I assume that because this has been on the internet for years, not just on reddit but on facebook feeds, bulk emails and so on. This is an internet standard.

[–]ObamaisYoGabbaGabba 1 point2 points ago

Some humans are not as as smart as others..

protip: it's not their fault, quit blaming them.

[–]Freks 1 point2 points ago

Not to ruin the party, but sometimes these crossings are manmade. If you got wildlife fences keeping the animals off the road, you usuly put up these signs where the fence ends, becouse this is where most animals choose to cross.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

No one can make jokes or use sarcasm except for reddit, amiriteguys?

[–]EbonicPlague 1 point2 points ago

One stupid comment and m1asma loses ALL faith in humanity.

Slight over reaction maybe?

[–]walkertexasharanguer 1 point2 points ago

And yet, my faith in Smart-Asses has been restored.

[–]GregLoire 1 point2 points ago

This submission didn't make me lose faith in humanity, but it did make me lose a little faith in Reddit. Why are you guys so dense to non-Redditors making jokes?

[–]kdanger 1 point2 points ago

Upvotes for The Region!

[–]siegtheheart 1 point2 points ago

Is it wrong that I got really excited when I saw a newspaper article from my home town on reddit?

[–]Bistai949 1 point2 points ago

It's called a joke dude.

[–]hanamichitensai 1 point2 points ago

[–]the_boat 1 point2 points ago

Man, Redditors really gain and lose their faith in humanity at the drop of a hat.

[–]BloodyThorn 1 point2 points ago

If this is what pushed your faith in humanity over the edge, you don't sound like you had much to begin with. I find that sad.

[–]SocialistRabbit 1 point2 points ago

It doesn't take very much for Redditors to lose their faith in humanity.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

For those who can't read it because it's too blurry:

Move the deer crossing to

where there's less traffic

A lot of deer get hit by cars west

of Crown Point on U.S. 231. There

are too many cars to have the deer

crossing here. The deer cross-

ing sign needs to be moved to a

road with less traffic. - TIM ABBOTT,

CROWN POINT

[–]scuby22 2 points3 points ago

[–]hcgator 1 point2 points ago

Chuck Testa?

[–]metalmike187 1 point2 points ago

I lose faith in humanity too. Wherever I see an old repost on the front page.

[–]nodimereson 0 points1 point ago

I'll tell the deer. Those guys need to pick better routes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Where I live that's a joke most 8-year-olds make. The show name "are you dumber than a third-grader" springs to mind, although there's a also big possibility that the letter writer was joking.

[–]themightypierre 0 points1 point ago

That's quite the over reaction you got there sonny.

[–]DemonSquirrel 0 points1 point ago

Pretty funny tbf

[–]getoutofheretaffer 0 points1 point ago

I'm ashamed to say that it took me a few seconds to realize what's wrong with this.

[–]bfogarty27 0 points1 point ago

This has been done so many damn times

[–]justforrazors 0 points1 point ago

When I read things like this, I almost always have this strong urge to downvote. I then remember that the author isn't the complete idiot.

[–]plainOldFool 0 points1 point ago

Fucking inconsiderate deer. They also should get a fucking job and pay taxes like the rest of us to pay for these stupid deer crossings.

[–]Dmixta 0 points1 point ago

We could just get rid of them all together...

[–]qu4d 0 points1 point ago

This joke is like 50 years old. Stop having faith in editors for printing over-used sarcasm.

[–]Ozzymandias 0 points1 point ago

Ahh, Speakouts...

[–]wheresbridge 0 points1 point ago

i actually think this must be a joke, actually a pretty good one

[–]Thecardinal74 0 points1 point ago

I remember after a not-too-clean electrocution in Florida's electric chair back in the 90's some dolt wrote a letter to the editor demanding executions be halted until the "electric chair passes rigorous safety tests"

...

[–]irob1776 0 points1 point ago

I love the fact that the paper decided to print this.

[–]bumzo 0 points1 point ago

mfw reading this

[–]Jessereddit 0 points1 point ago

He is very stupid, Oh deer...

[–]irok30278 0 points1 point ago

lolwut?

[–]wateristasty 0 points1 point ago

You can't tell that's a joke? What's wrong with you?

[–]FinalGearheart 0 points1 point ago

God, Crownpoint? I live near there and I am not surprised by this.

[–]thebootlegsaint 0 points1 point ago

You may think this is funny...but one time I was at the Grand Canyon and was leaving one of the vista parking areas. A deer walked right up to the road and stopped. I stopped my car and without thinking, waved the deer across the road. The deer walked across. I continued on. /true story.

MOVE THE SIGN, SAVE THE DEER.

[–]YellowTacoTiel 0 points1 point ago

Fucking morons.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

kjgk,jgsgd

WHA

[–]IntlMysteryMan 0 points1 point ago

I had to read it twice. I just don't speak stupid well enough to have gotten thus at first glance.

[–]MannerShark 0 points1 point ago

At first I was like, wth, they can move a road crossing for the deer, but I didn't realize your deer crossing is just a sign.

[–]Drail 0 points1 point ago

This is from the Blue Collar comedy group. He's copying a joke.

[–]what_have_i_done 0 points1 point ago

If they built a crosswalk for the deer then they wouldn't get hit, problem solved!

Isn't Tim Abbot an old pseudonym?

[–]TheJanks 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to imagine this guy is trolling, and also wrote about how much water would be available for summers if we abolished daylight savings.

[–]workin_da_bone 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to assume Tim is an amateur troll and a tool, just like the subster.

I live near this area. The fact that this is written semi-intelligibly is the more surprising than the content. This guy is probably writing this with the arm growing out of his head.

[–]shizzy1427 0 points1 point ago

I shudder to think that I am of the same species as this man.

[–]Xenc 0 points1 point ago

At least he's thinking about the safety of the deers.
