I used to think ereaders were stupid, but then I learned I could download thousands of books from google for free. Plus carrying one around is a lot easier than carrying around multiple books.

[–]fakecandy 24 points25 points ago

I understand the convenience of the e-reader but I don't want books to go away. I love book stores and the fact that they push sales for these inside the stores feels like cannibalism. Visiting book stores make me happy and the day they no longer exist will be the day I really don't want to love on this planet anymore.

[–]Ugbrog 15 points16 points ago

I see, so you want to live, but procreation is out.

[–]brningpyre 8 points9 points ago

You don't need to love to make babby.

[–]Zeppelanoid 5 points6 points ago

Then how IS babby formed?

[–]fakecandy 0 points1 point ago

Haha, oops! I meant live not love on this planet. I deserved being made fun of for that error.

[–]sqwarlock 6 points7 points ago

I'd love to see publishing companies adopt the model used by the music industry when it comes to vinyl purchases. Most vinyl you buy comes with a code to download the album in mp3 format. Why not include a voucher for .epub and .mobi formats with the purchase of those $35 hardcover editions for those of us that primarily use an e-reader but also have a nice physical library? I'd actually buy new books if they did this.

[–]IamSparticles 2 points3 points ago

Do you love reading, or do you just love books? Because you don't need a book to read, and having an e-reader means you have access to vastly more reading material than you could ever possibly get from a book store. It also makes it easier for new and obscure authors to make their work available. It uses less resources and improves profits. Honestly, the only downside I can think of is that people who work in book stores are essentially going to be out of a job.

[–]originalredditor 7 points8 points ago

I've never been exposed to such an infinite library until the day I discovered ebooks.

Get over it. Long live the motherfucking Kindle.

-A voracious reader

[–]me135 6 points7 points ago

But dat book smell.

[–]originalredditor 5 points6 points ago

Dat spine!

[–]Eurospective 1 point2 points ago

I ORDERED MINE 5 HOURS AGO AND AMAZON HAS NOT MAILED IT YET. I am almost spoiled enough by them to give them a call and ask what's taking them so long.

[–]originalredditor 2 points3 points ago

I love the fact that I'll have read the book before Luddites even get it from UPS. I just read a book just now! haha

[–]alyosha25 1 point2 points ago

I enjoy buying books. I read them once, but hundreds of people borrow from me and I love it, as most of my friends wouldn't have been exposed otherwise. Getting away from digital screens and stuff is oh so satisfying.

[–]Smarag 1 point2 points ago

That's what they are going to say about LCDs and ebook readers once we will get mind screens that will be directly connected to our brain. This argument is just as silly as people arguing for horses instead of cars, because they make them happy.

[–]Trolling_Stone 1 point2 points ago

Yeah dude I love book stores too. I feel like I'm in a universe of possibilities with books on every subject possible and I can learn anything. I usually only walk out with MAD or The Onion, though.

[–]originalredditor 0 points1 point ago

It's not an either-or proposition. The Kindle doesn't directly threaten the existence of paperbacks. But until you've experienced the joy of carrying an entire libary with you, in a six ounce package, your opinion is...emblematic of those Luddites with whom we've all had experience.

Spend $79. Try it for a week. Then tell us we're ridiculous.

[–]fakecandy 0 points1 point ago

I'm not against e-readers or the advancement of technology. I'm against book stores selling the very item that could put them out of business. I'm not saying it's going to happen but it's not unlikely either. If it does happen I don't want to be here to see it.

[–]originalredditor 0 points1 point ago

I think you missed a word. But I wished bookstores would stay the same too, but they won't.

On the plus siide, more people are reading than ever before.

[–]radicalinfidel 0 points1 point ago

I agree. There is something about the smell of a bookstore that the next generation will never experience. It's like pre-nostalgia.

[–]dejerik -1 points0 points ago

man I really want to love in this planet but I am sick of loving alone, anyone free tonight?

[–]this_sort_of_thing -1 points0 points ago

Congratulations on making a completely hipster opinion without providing any compelling arguments whatsoever.

[–]nos2121 2 points3 points ago

Making an opinion? And personal preference requires logic that appeals to someone else? Are you stupid?

[–]TwilightShy 2 points3 points ago

When I saw "E-Reader" I thought of this.

[–]bleedscarlet 27 points28 points ago

yay old comics getting upvoted, and no source to boot! Good for you pal!!

You're just about ready to join tumblr, just make sure you have a douche haircut and douche glasses ready.

source: http://poorlydrawnlines.com/

edit: Maxbastard dug up the actual comic: http://poorlydrawnlines.com/comic/e-reader/

[–]maxbastard 6 points7 points ago

Came here for this. Comic in question: E-reader

[–]bleedscarlet -2 points-1 points ago

thanks, i was too lazy to find the actual comic.

[–]alyosha25 2 points3 points ago

This is funny and poignant because the world is trending towards everything at your digital fingertips and no one having ownership over their work, so sources are becoming a thing of the past. Who gets credit over some hilarious meme? No one. Physical objects made with care can have a powerful effect. Memories attached, who gave it to you, etc. are all lost when a book is on a harddrive, read and forgotten, as opposed to real objects passed between friends and shared communally.

[–]charlie_xavier 2 points3 points ago

I call bullshit. The only thing that is lost when text and video are transferred purely via digital means is the physical media that was once used to transfer those ideas. My friend just sent me a movie I wanted to see via dropbox. I still know he sent it to me and appreciate him sharing the content with me just the same. The content has the same effect as long as we realize that the medium that content is delivered over has no bearing on its effect.

Also, no one gets credit for memes because they're fucking one step better than copy+paste. The proprietor of poorlydrawnlines.com spends time and money on creating his comic. He or she probably spends more time working on that comic than you've spent using your brain in your entire life. So he or she and anyone else that works on that site deserves the page views and advertising views garnered when someone sees their work.

[–]alyosha25 -1 points0 points ago

Wow way to be so insulting for no reason. I'll be moving right along..

[–]charlie_xavier 1 point2 points ago

Your blase attitude towards this guy's hard work is the reason I insulted you.

[–]bizarroaquaman -5 points-4 points ago

Who cares? It's a comic.

[–]bleedscarlet 0 points1 point ago

It's theft.

[–]charlie_xavier 1 point2 points ago

It's not theft, but it does fall under the umbrella of general asshattery.

[–]bizarroaquaman 0 points1 point ago

Who cares? Nothing bad happened as a result of it being posted here. No one was injured. No repercussions will come of it. It literally won't make a difference to anyone's life. So what's the point of being a dick about it? What does insulting the OP solve? If you really just cared about the original artist then just post the source and say, "Hey next time you should provide the source because it's the right thing to do." Instead of, "Fuck you, asshole." If you want people to consider what you have to say then don't insult them. If you just want to be a dick and feel superior then find something better to do with your time.

[–]littlefuckface 0 points1 point ago

We are benefiting from his efforts and creativity. The least we could do is acknowledge that fact by giving proper citations. It's not even like there's a paywall or some shit.

[–]bizarroaquaman 1 point2 points ago

You can also point that out without getting emotional about it and being a dick.

[–]splott 5 points6 points ago

[–]Beelzebud 1 point2 points ago

I hadn't seen that before. That is funny shit.

[–]Beelzebud 1 point2 points ago

The final panel of that comic is missing. The one where Keeping It Real Goes Wrong.

[–]WookieProdigy 1 point2 points ago

Love that sketch!

[–]ClickItBoom 1 point2 points ago

I would hope someone who liked books this much would know how to correctly spell "life".

[–]Naeddyr 1 point2 points ago

People who like books for their papery, ink-smelling sake... Don't understand where the true soul of a book lies, and judge... things by their appearances.

Same thing like classical music enthusiast who get into absolutely mindbogglingly petty Youtube fights over the temperament of musical instruments. Bach is Bach, even when he's played on a synth.. Especially when he's played on a synth, because then we can forget the physical, material trappings of the music, as it has been removed from its original context and shown to be what it is: a sequence of notes and sounds that could be made by an army of synchronised cats and still sound good. Bach on an accordeon is just superb, it's like they were made for each other. Reading Camus on my PRS-T1 is easier than from a paper book because it has a built-in French dictionary! I'm sure he doesn't mind.

EDIT:

Why does that e-reader have a black screen?

[–]bigpatky 4 points5 points ago

My wife's sister definitely gave her a hard time when she bought a kindle a couple years ago. According to her, you can't experience reading if it's not made out of paper.

[–]Lonestarr1337 12 points13 points ago

What a pretentious snob.

[–]tefink 6 points7 points ago

Well, shit. What the fuck have I been doing at this computer for all these years?!

[–]down_vote_magnet 5 points6 points ago

Fapping does not count as reading.

Edit: Okay, unless you read the YouPorn comments. Carry on.

[–]hansthecleverhorse 1 point2 points ago

I really like the way Giles puts it.

[–]RJLupin 1 point2 points ago

I have gotten a lot of shit from people since I got a kindle. Books aren't going stop being printed on paper in this life time, so let me enjoy the having a library in pocket.

[–]MinorThreat89 1 point2 points ago

Maybe it's not for some people. It's been great for me, personally.

[–]LoveOfProfit 5 points6 points ago

I absolutely love my Kindle. I average about a book every 2 days, I have about 1500 book stored on my Kindle atm, and reading it feels exactly like reading a book.

A couple of weeks ago as I was falling asleep and my brain was shutting down, I actually found myself trying to physically turn the page of my Kindle before I realized what I was doing.

I've always loved reading, and I read quickly. The Kindle has allowed me to do so even more efficiently.

[–]RJLupin 0 points1 point ago

I have read a lot more since I got my kindle. Mainly because it's very easy to get comfortable with. No worries about where to position a large hard cover.

[–]Swing_Top 1 point2 points ago

Re-post but still funny

[–]gravylookout 0 points1 point ago

SOY BOMBS!!!!

[–]Bluedemonfox 0 points1 point ago

I love books but I also love reading e-books since you can still read them in the dark.

[–]Arandanos 0 points1 point ago

[–]black27696 0 points1 point ago

[–]latinloner 0 points1 point ago

WORD.

[–]JohnTheCrow 0 points1 point ago

I love the feel and smell of books, but I still can't understand why so many people, even people who are tech-savvy in all other things, are so atavistic when it comes to e-readers.

[–]singingTurtles 0 points1 point ago

New tattoo idea right here.

[–]grungevalue 0 points1 point ago

OH NO MY BOOK RAN OUT OF BATTERIES!

[–]FancyPancakes 0 points1 point ago

This is it for me. I don't want to recharge a book. I want to be able to read it whenever I want even if I'm lazy and forgetful and lose a charger.

[–]ForeverMarried 0 points1 point ago

Ereaders = $200 Angry Birds machine.

[–]knji 0 points1 point ago

Is that Jonathan Franzen.

[–]perrydalian 0 points1 point ago

I'm trying to figure out the best way to put this comic on the back of my Kindle. Suggestions?

[–]truthjusticeUSAway -2 points-1 points ago

Yeah, I prefer to own 300 pounds of books I use, more often than not, once each. I also would rather listen to crackly, fragile music storage mediums and live entirely by candlelight.

[–]DaveNF -1 points0 points ago

No one who is that intense about reading would spell life "LYFE".

[–]pkcs11 -1 points0 points ago

/r/books would upvote you into Heaven if you x-posted there.

[–]Lucradiste -1 points0 points ago

My issue with ebooks is that if there isn't a big physical book staring at me every time I get bored I tend to forget about the book and it sits there... Lonely and unread. I have 13 ebooks waiting to be read. I probably never will.

[–]Bluebraid -1 points0 points ago

I just bought an ereader. I fucking hate it. It invades my privacy, it occasionally pops up ads while I'm reading, I'm basically renting the right to read the book and not owning it, I have to keep it charged in order to use it, I can't underline things or write in the margins, I shouldn't use it in the bath, it has a touch screen that sometimes randomly doesn't respond to commands or queues them up and then turns the pages like five at a time after 30 seconds of doing nothing... it's shit. A paperback novel is WAY better.

[–]WookieProdigy 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like you got a crappy e-reader.

it's true that books nowadays are like antique XD but their are many things that you could only see in the book

[–]alejo699 -5 points-4 points ago

Fuck da trees!
