A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

well, 3 months isn't as bad as 3 weeks. I know reposting is frowned upon but OP didn't claim to have taken in and despite having used this site for 3 years (newer username), I've never seen it. I'm not saying you're wrong, but it's not a downvote-worthy infraction IMO

  • a long exposure image of an taking off
  • image of an taking off
  • an taking off

[–]ferminriii 2 points3 points ago

Is that a takeoff or an approach?

[–]TheSemiTallest 10 points11 points ago

I think many fewer people would take plane trips if that's what the approaches looked like; it would be a pretty rough landing.... Planes begin their descent for approach long before the airport is even in sight.

To be fair, though, I think it only looks that steep because of the angle the shot was taken from. as far as I know, only fighter jets take off near-vertical like that.

[–]dschneider 11 points12 points ago

At first I thought it might have been the John Wayne in Santa Ana, CA, but I think the steep takeoffs on their 19R runway always turn left after the initial climb.

But yeah, the takeoffs at SNA are crazy steep.

[–]rofl_pilot 5 points6 points ago

You sir, get an up vote for knowing what the fuck you're talking about!

[–]dschneider 1 point2 points ago

Thank you!

I see your username, are you an actual pilot and, if so, have you taken off from that runway? I'm not a pilot, I just fly a lot and I kinda love that airport, but I've always wanted to talk to an actual pilot about that airport.

[–]rofl_pilot 2 points3 points ago

I am indeed an actual pilot. I learned to fly helicopters in northern California, and just moved to Orange County a few months ago. I have yet to actually fly out SNA, but I will be attending a flight school there to get my Instructor rating. Although, coincidentally I am flying out to visit family tonight after work, so I'll get to see the airport procedures firsthand! I will gladly tell you anything that I can though.

[–]geosync23 1 point2 points ago

I took my FAA private exam out of that airport. However I fly rotorcraft not fixed wing and it was only a few flights. I live in Colorado and there are very few certified examiners for helicopters here and none were available at the time. And as part of flying a certain type of aircraft ( R-44) you must attend a safety course at the manufacturer in California. So I took my test while I was out there right before the course.

It was an amazing experience. That airport is very interesting and hectic in its own kind of way. It sounds like you may be more familiar with specific traffic flow then me. The school I tested at had their own side building with a rooftop pad. My first rooftop landing! Haha, this place was pro, a lot different then what I was used to. Anyway, not to mention helicopters tend to not follow the same flow as planes, although we still used the runway plenty for exercises. So probably can't tell you much but it was fun leaving as a civilian in a commercial aircraft after flying there myself.

[–]dschneider 2 points3 points ago

That's awesome!

I don't know nearly as much as I sound like, but after my first takeoff from that airport years ago, I learned everything I could about it, and if I ever go to that area, I try to fly in/out of SNA just because it's fun.

I don't think nearly enough about helicopters and how traffic control must differ so wildly for those craft. That's so cool though!

[–]rofl_pilot 1 point2 points ago

Did you get your rating at Helistream? That's where I am planning on doing my CFI.

[–]geosync23 0 points1 point ago

Yes, it was Helistream. Excellent school from what I can tell. By coincidence I was about to move out there following my test, for other work. I ended up not moving but I thoroughly researched them before hand in case I did, so I would be able to continue my training. They seem great. I met the director and he was fantastic. They were so professional and well equipped. They seem to engage in all kinds of interesting side projects and services. That weekend for example they were helping cover and spot a sailboat race. They were also picking up Linkin Park for a show. They were hopping, and being from Colorado and attending a very small school this was all pretty impressive to me. I enjoy high altitude training, and I am for a lot of reasons, glad I stayed in Colorado... but there's no question that I think about how valuable it would of been to finish there. But oh well. Anyway, enjoy it man, it seems like top notch training, in one of the densest rotorcraft airspace in the world.

[–]rofl_pilot 0 points1 point ago

Right on. Thanks for the info. Being familiar with high density altitude ops is a real plus though. I have done a fair bit of flying up in the high sierra around Lake Tahoe, and that experience definitely forces you to use a bit of finesse that you can get away without down here at sea level. Are you in Robinsons, Schweitzers or something more exotic at the moment?

[–]Mekchrious 1 point2 points ago

You accidently the title.

[–]burkhalp74 1 point2 points ago

I just a whole coke.

EDIT: Accidentally.

Is this a repost?

[–]T4xman 0 points1 point ago

Upvote for proper use of an words.

[–]rahmad 0 points1 point ago

It seems extraordinarily steep right after lift-off... I'm not an expert on aviation, but I've flown enough to know that I am definitely not at a nearly 70-80' angle at liftoff.

Could someone with more aviation expertise comment of whether or not this is an actual long-exposure or a photoshop job?

edit: to clarify, by steep I don't mean that the plane would actually be at that incline, just that the rate of ascent would be so dramatically high...

[–]rossco204 0 points1 point ago

This is the goddamn trippiest thing I've ever seen.
