As a former competitive marching band member, and current marching/guard instructor, I have seen this face many a times in pit percussion.

[–]MaritMonkey 62 points63 points ago

Spent 6 years in a drum corps pit. It's the things that seem easy that everybody's freaking grandmother will notice if you fuck up. This level of intensity is totally called for.

EDIT: For nostalgia's sake, a typical move-in schedule. I'm not sure if it's more frightening that I actually kept to this routine for 6 whole summers or that I sort of miss it.

[–]Fyziks 36 points37 points ago

Many people don't understand the intensity of marching percussion.. Sadly.

[–]naize 6 points7 points ago

Or for that matter, front ensemble; they have their share of pressure.

Competitions require ensemble to cover the same distance in the same time as the rest of the band when entering and leaving the field, but they need to wheel out gear that weighs twice as much as the section's members. Instrument redundancy in marchers masks individual musical errors, while ensemble err is very apparent. An ensemble timpani player I knew once broke his mid-high's head in matching brass' overzealous volume in the first piece, and spent the rest of the performance rapidly re-pedaling the mid-low and high to match the notes that would have been normally covered by the mid-high.

Crazy stuff.

[–]Semajj 5 points6 points ago

What corps did you march?

[–]AholeKevin 15 points16 points ago

Pioneer; Bluecoats here :-)

[–]MaritMonkey 5 points6 points ago

Boston, 99-'04

edit: oops

[–]pinchepanda 5 points6 points ago

Six wordsssss. :) Bloo '11

[–]mcbutterbuns 1 point2 points ago

Scoreball Uruguay greenhats, 00-04

Played the harpiphone until my elbows bled

[–]basszack 3 points4 points ago

What instrument did you march?

[–]Drwhoovez 4 points5 points ago

Sousaphone

[–]basszack 2 points3 points ago

That's pretty cool. I play snare on my high school's line. But I play 3rd bass during indoor season.

[–]AholeKevin 0 points1 point ago

Plates baby!

Haha, I'm older than all y'all.

[–]Vibraphonium 0 points1 point ago

Cavalier pit member here. That kind of intensity that dude's showing is pretty normal, but he could stand to maybe not show it so much

[–]Semajj 1 point2 points ago

I didn't realize the reddit/DCI community was so large. Is there by any chance a DCI subreddit? lol

But I wish I would've marched a corps, I age out after this season. I have a few friends that march Academy, and I think our bass tech is out with the SVC cymbals again this year.

[–]DaBouse 1 point2 points ago

I LOVE YOU FOR POSTING THIS!!!

[–]morgantaylorx 12 points13 points ago

Ha, I'm in the drumline and I know this face too.

[–]Semajj 16 points17 points ago

You guys are drummers too? :D

But in his defense, that was the most sought after part for sleigh ride

[–]jvano 5 points6 points ago

Have to agree, though the woodblocks were a close second. Between high school and college band, I performed every percussion part in that song at least once.

[–]Semajj -1 points0 points ago

Where did you go to college?

[–]jvano 1 point2 points ago

Evangel University. Small private liberal arts college in Springfield, MO.

[–]rjaspa 0 points1 point ago

Evangel University. Home of the Beer Pong World Headquarters. (MSU alum, here)

[–]Turtle_Dove 3 points4 points ago

Ahh the joys if being in pit i'll miss them now im on top bass

[–]bucknugget 0 points1 point ago

top bass is not a real bass drum!

[–]Turtle_Dove 2 points3 points ago

Why so

[–]Brucethematt 1 point2 points ago

It's a fat Tom at best

[–]JBurrows_ 1 point2 points ago

We call it the sideways snare. That's what I marched this past year.

[–]Turtle_Dove 0 points1 point ago

No mine isn't that small the tiny bass is though -we don't use it we have five bass drums but bass one is tiny bass and bass two is top bass

[–]bucknugget 2 points3 points ago

It was always a joke at my old school. I marched top bass. top bass played a lot of snare-like licks and split a lot with 2, but 2 was always considered the more difficult bass (when you have a good bassline) due to the difficulty of splitting more upbeats and whatnot.

[–]superbecky 1 point2 points ago

I miss my bass drum...I played 2 for three years. The most difficult part about it in my experience was if anyone in our bass drum section was missing, I had to cover their parts.

[–]Semajj 1 point2 points ago

Top bass usually has great than or equal chops compared to the snares.

[–]madmonkeymud 0 points1 point ago

I was in my high school's drum line for one year and we didn't get to make that face; we had to act crazy for the show's theme. So instead of looking focused we had to look like zombies and serial killers.

[–]massivecomplexity 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but it makes more sense being in the drumline (only of course, the music actually sounds clean as fuck.)

[–]bucknugget 0 points1 point ago

howso?

[–]massivecomplexity 1 point2 points ago

Maybe it's just my band, but our battery music is the shit. When we finished our first show at Dayton for indoor, I wanted to just throw my mallets at the judges. It's so groovy it's not even funny.

[–]bucknugget 0 points1 point ago

I'm just saying, people in the pit are experiencing the same intensity of emotion so "the face" appears in either setting. I marched battery too.

[–]DaBouse 2 points3 points ago

Exactly, my sister calls it her "Performance face"

[–]massivecomplexity 0 points1 point ago

Oh totally. I just was never a keyboard type guy or anything else pit-related. I just think it's funny when I see a guy with a triangle with the most serious face. It makes me laugh every time.

[–]daemonheart777 0 points1 point ago

I love seeing someone with that face it is hilarious...then I look back and remember I am sure I've made that face a few times, in indoor drumline I got the rocket man solo.. I may have been a little excited.

[–]morgantaylorx 0 points1 point ago

Yes!! I had to be in the pit this last year (because I recently moved to Texas, and your first year no matter what grade you're in you gotta be in pit) but I just had tryouts and I'm on the snare now! I freakin love marching band. Texas practices are hot as fuck though.

[–]almjjo 0 points1 point ago

What high school?

[–]morgantaylorx 0 points1 point ago

Memorial High School in Houston

[–]massivecomplexity 0 points1 point ago

Your first year was in pit? Bro you got it easy. My first year was bass 1. Holy crap. It's so fun, but it takes a lot of work to memorize those notes. But our line was probably the best line in a few years. We were splitting threes in no time. I'm on snare too. The twist? I'm in 7th grade. And I'm not kidding when I say they only let the best people in the battery on snare. If I could put the snare music for our indoor show in a pdf and PM you it I totally would.

[–]morgantaylorx 0 points1 point ago

Yeah! I got picked over some juniors. So I was like hell yeah! I think I'm pretty good, but this past year we had this Asian guy and he was AMAZING

[–]morgantaylorx 0 points1 point ago

Btw, I'm a chick, so there's no confusion! Haha

[–]smartzie 4 points5 points ago

Ohman, I miss marching band. Even the polyester uniforms.

[–]DaBouse 1 point2 points ago

You have to admit, those things are warm as shit in the winter.

[–]NcountR 0 points1 point ago

Ya know, now that i think about it. You are absolutely right! I remember putting the drums back into the equipment truck after an away game in late December. It was probably the coldest my hands and feet have ever been. But my body was just as warm as could be. What the hell do they put in those disgusting / smelly / EPIC uniforms?

(we even had the huge SPARTA plumes on our helms)

[–]landrict 1 point2 points ago

Oh man I hate playing brass in the winter! I can't feel my hands when I play.

[–]DaBouse 0 points1 point ago

I blame the collar preventing any air to circulate through and keeping you toasty in the winter and boiling during the summer.

[–]smartzie 0 points1 point ago

That's true. But early in the school year, I thought I was going to die.

[–]bene_gesserit -1 points0 points ago

As a former samurai warrior, and current noodle lord, I have seen this face many a times in silk self portraits.

[–]jezza24 0 points1 point ago

came here for this was not disappoint

[–]Dragonfrog 0 points1 point ago

As a pit percussionist, I can confirm this.

Of couse, most of the percussionists in my group are a bunch of goofs so I see them giving each-other high fives every time they hit a cowbell or a triangle right.

[–]daemonheart777 0 points1 point ago

Hey, we are very serious about our instruments. But I was in pit for 3 years and marched cymbals for 2, and they told us you are going to feel like you look silly, but do it anyways. Now I get to see the faces we made.

[–]raging_asshole 0 points1 point ago

So can you tell me what it is he's doing?

Is it just what it looks like? 2 steel plates with a hinge in the middle, that make a loud CLAP when slapped together?

[–]threwitawaynow 5 points6 points ago

Yeah. And he probably just picked it up 5 seconds ago after playing something else, and will put it back down in another 10 seconds to play something else, all from memory. It requires a lot of concentration.

[–]DaBouse 5 points6 points ago

Welcome to band, if you say we aren't a sport, FUCK YOU!

[–]oSpaZMaNo 1 point2 points ago

My HS band was held higher than any sport in the school...but it helps when you have 7 national championships...lol

[–]DaBouse 2 points3 points ago

I hate you for being held higher, football rules my school. BUT I LOVE YOU FOR HAVING 7 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

[–]daemonheart777 0 points1 point ago

We brought home more trophies than our football team and never got any recognition...unless we put the trophy on the principals desk with a sticky note reminding him there are sports other than football.

[–]the_pro 0 points1 point ago

Which school?

[–]oSpaZMaNo 1 point2 points ago

Marian Catholic out of Chicago Heights IL

[–]the_pro 0 points1 point ago

Wow! Y'all beat my Alma Mater, Tarpon Springs High! Impressive! I didn't think that was possible, but I AM a bit biased...I was one of the founding members of the current organization. I wish I had more than upvotes to give.

[–]oSpaZMaNo 1 point2 points ago

Ive always like tarpon's shows! What did you play?

[–]the_pro 1 point2 points ago

I was in Colorguard & Winterguard in the 90's. Yeesh. Excuse me while I go purchase a walker online...

[–]Sullan08 0 points1 point ago

Not really a sport, takes skill though no doubt.

[–]ThisIsAWorkAccount 6 points7 points ago

most likely they're wood, but yeah that exactly. It's used to mimic the sound of a whip.

[–]stokleplinger 1 point2 points ago

You pretty much got it right on the mark, except they're probably just wood.

[–]ThatBronyGuy 1 point2 points ago

They're wood, but yes. It's also fun <:

[–]lexivalentine 0 points1 point ago

He's playing a slapstick! It's makes a whip-like sound; it's doesn't seem very musically important, but it adds nice ornamentation - which ooh's and ahh's the judges - better GE score!

[–]Asterisk007 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, my band director always tells me to clap harder, and its very hard not to make this face

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]DaBouse 1 point2 points ago

Most likely because he moved off a keyboard instrument a few measures ago to grab those. (P.S. you can't march a vibe)

[–]powerlines56324 26 points27 points ago

You can't play the slap stick and not have an intense face. One of the funnest percussion instruments; I rock that shit every year playing Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride".

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points ago

I rock the fuck out of the horse whinny.

[–]japanesetuba 6 points7 points ago

And I've got the downbeats covered, bro.

[–]ThisIsAWorkAccount 7 points8 points ago

I clop-clop on the woodblocks so hard

[–]awestrom 6 points7 points ago

Clop-clop on they ass

[–]fswmacguy 2 points3 points ago

Dat clop-clop.

[–]awestrom 1 point2 points ago

Clop-clop, mothafucka

[–]bmfa02 1 point2 points ago

it's clip-clop. you're thinking of a certain subreddit, you sick mother fuckers.

[–]FlutterShy- 0 points1 point ago

Live and let live.

[–]Ben_Man 1 point2 points ago

Fuck yeah for the woodblocks part, that part is the shit.

[–]Loindsey 1 point2 points ago

I rock the 3rd valve action on the giddy-up section.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Sleigh ride is my favorite holiday song...

[–]sneeze_and_fart 92 points93 points ago

Thought it was Michael Jackson at first.

[–]thegiggler 34 points35 points ago

I was thinking Joakim Noah

[–]johnnydizz 7 points8 points ago

"You just gotta love the intensity that Joakim Noah brings to this high school marching band."

[–]thegiggler 0 points1 point ago

Gimme dat hot sauce

[–]Guest_Acct 0 points1 point ago

Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas.

[–]Aurilion 2 points3 points ago

Glad i'm not the only one. Looks like MJ from about the early 90's.

[–]bhsfb33 4 points5 points ago

I Love Little Michael

[–]That_Urks_Me -1 points0 points ago

He's at the elementary school band performance.

[–]very_nice_how_much 10 points11 points ago

Chimona!

[–]HolographicMetapod 1 point2 points ago

immediately heard in his voice

[–]erockjr -3 points-2 points ago

Every-damn-time I want to say something, someone has already said it first it seems. Keen eye I must say good sir.

[–]Brashdoodle 47 points48 points ago

The passion he injects into each moment of his performance is clear on his masculine face. A simple football game? NO! A stage for him to throw scruples to the wind and break out of his quiet reserve. You hear the tempo rising, the music getting louder. Biting his lip, a look of concentration appears on his face as he assumes a power stance and you know you are about to hear greatness. In one thunderous clap it is over, but that's all it took. The stunned crowd turns to each other unsure how to react. He strides off the field, head held high and pony tail blowing in the wind. The other band members can only watch in awe, hoping to one day master their performances as he has mastered his.

[–]maverickxv 11 points12 points ago

Can you narrate my life? Please?

[–]LLv2 4 points5 points ago

Can we get the guy who posts reddit comments to music on youtube to do this one?

[–]badphish94 1 point2 points ago

I read that with James Earl Jones's voice.

[–]FlutterShy- 1 point2 points ago

As a musician, I totally know that feel, bro! So goddamn exciting when a big feature is coming up.

[–]the_pro 0 points1 point ago

Had to x-post this to r/marching_arts. Well said.

[–]quegrawks 0 points1 point ago

He was allowed to have a pony tail on the field?

[–]marvinjenkins 14 points15 points ago

[–]Andreesen 1 point2 points ago

came to find this. not disappointed.

[–]mikemoc 9 points10 points ago

Joakim Noah and Michael Jackson had a kid....

[–]Panther-State 7 points8 points ago

...hand cuffed? Roofied? Gagged? You can't just stop mid-sentence

[–]mikemoc 1 point2 points ago

hand cuffed, roofied, gagged, and willing!

[–]Panther-State 0 points1 point ago

In that case they're doing it wrong

[–]thewhamms 20 points21 points ago

I hope to hell that's his sex face.

[–]Fagel88 17 points18 points ago

He's in a marching band, he doesn't have sex.

[–]Whoa_Chill_Bro 14 points15 points ago

man i wasn't in band in hs or anything but all the slutty girls were in the band it seemed. those band kids saw way more titties and buttholes than i did.

[–]Rountree85 8 points9 points ago

As a former high school marching band member, I can confirm this.

[–]dontcallitthat 7 points8 points ago

As a former high school marching band member, I can also confirm this.

Also, titties.

[–]daemonheart777 0 points1 point ago

Confirmed. We have a lot of people confirming this. Hehe titties

[–]ZapActions-dower 13 points14 points ago

You obviously have never been in a marching band.

[–]neotifa 3 points4 points ago

what are you talking about? the band had the most sex of everybody. i mean, how could you undress eachother, share hours together, and know everything about everything without sex happening? besides, what else do we have to do on the 6 hour bus rides home from competition? nothing like a post-victory sexy session in the back of a bus, amirite?

[–]DaBouse 4 points5 points ago

You make me miss marching band season already.

[–]neotifa 0 points1 point ago

i've been missing marching band season for 4 years already. :(

[–]DaBouse 0 points1 point ago

You may still be a bit young for your liking, but here, have some marching band for adults.

[–]neotifa 0 points1 point ago

uhhhhh, young? i saw the dca last year as a matter of fact. i thoroughly enjoyed it. the only thing keeping me out of college marching band is my work schedule and course load, not to mention my shitty gpa.

[–]jugglist 0 points1 point ago

Obviously you are not a golfer.

[–]cesarjulius 3 points4 points ago

I like this new look for the Black Eyed Peas.

[–]ser_dhusti 4 points5 points ago

I'm just like you. I put my pants on, one leg at a time. Except when I finish putting them on, I throw down sick clap beats.

[–]depotman 3 points4 points ago

[–]honor646 0 points1 point ago

Oh wow, it took me a few seconds to realize what he was doing hah

[–]PoniesRBitchin 2 points3 points ago

ITZ MOTHAFUCKIN CLAP TIME

[–]mpavlofsky 2 points3 points ago

Shouldn't he be starting at center for the Chicago Bulls?

[–]superdrypeezy 1 point2 points ago

Thought I was the only one thinking that.

[–]outofthewoods 2 points3 points ago

As a percussionist... this is AWESOME!!

[–]IShireBeTolkien 2 points3 points ago

God this takes me back to the days of band. I played percussion all through high school and in senior year band was a chill class. When I didn't play I slept in the percussion section, underneath the mallet instruments. One day I'm sleeping away and the band starts a song where the first note is from the slap stick. Fucking fortissimo too (what I call triple forte.) So this guy smacks it as hard as he can a couple feet away from me. I shot up and yelled "OH SHIT!." Except the whole band had rests after the slap stick and heard me being awoken. Everyone stopped playing and just laughed. I loved band.

TL;DR ZZZZ CLAP OH SHIT HA HA HA

[–]ListenChump 2 points3 points ago

[–]stone111111 1 point2 points ago

whats with the yellow power ranger in the background?

[–]ndnecoal 4 points5 points ago

That would be a member of their color guard, you can see that they're spinning a red flag.

[–]Pacehouse[!] 0 points1 point ago

The flag core has a nice butt. How did I miss that in high school?

[–]biggmclargehuge 1 point2 points ago

you went to a high school that didn't have a flag corps

[–]Pacehouse[!] 0 points1 point ago

I feel cheated.

[–]ndnecoal 1 point2 points ago

Because in High school there were very few standards, if any, to get into the color guard... if you had one that existed. My high school had something like 4 girls who were almost all overweight and lacked any of the fine motor skills required to NOT hit the band members with their flags. How do you think my sousaphone got dented so much? Or my legs so bruised?

[–]TexasTransplant 1 point2 points ago

How do you think my sousaphone got dented so much? Or my legs so bruised?

Did you really mean to put those two together like that?

[–]ndnecoal 0 points1 point ago

I swear, the guard was aiming for people. And those flags carry a ton of force when they ran with them (yea our guard ran, they didn't walk quickly or jog, they flat out ran), your legs will be hurt and any large instrument will get hit, it's like the murphy's law of band.

[–]mobilehypo 0 points1 point ago

That would be our high school also. I can't really criticize them for being fat, because I gained enough to match them my junior year but when we'd go to competitions we'd always have the ugliest color guard out of everyone.

[–]teh_colonel 3 points4 points ago

This is what I imagine Rob Trujillo was doing before he joined Metallica.

[–]filterspam 1 point2 points ago

Clap my bitch up

[–]Fukui_San 1 point2 points ago

CLAP AT ME BRO!

[–]darystotle 1 point2 points ago

That's Michael Jackson.

[–]Leonidas_ 1 point2 points ago

slapstick: because clapping isn't loud or annoying enough

[–]K-OMG 1 point2 points ago

Played bass guitar for a season in my highschool's winter percussion. My director made me play this sily thing (slapstick) for the crash intro to our show. I know what it feels like to be expected to perform both muscly and visually with this and it it feels just as awkward as this picture makes it out to look. You just gotta go with it and try your best to look badass if that's what the show calls for. Sorry, only link I could find :\

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8HCjpxM59g&feature=youtube_gdata_player

[–]salamat_engot 0 points1 point ago

Where are you guys from? What association do you guys march in?

[–]K-OMG 0 points1 point ago

Kamiak high school in Washington. We're from Mukilteo, (North of Seattle area)

[–]mobilehypo 0 points1 point ago

I'm totally confused as to why the one cymbal playing dude runs across the field and then back again...

[–]bsjay 1 point2 points ago

Khal Drogo lives!

[–]TurnpikeGhost 1 point2 points ago

SHAMONA!

[–]beeline 2 points3 points ago

Yeah. I rocked a slapstick in 7th grade. I meant business on that shit. If you fuck up, EVERYONE notices. You got to slap that shit with precision.

[–]ms_emerika 1 point2 points ago

Oh how I miss marching band...Sleigh Ride, not so much.

[–]always_sharts 0 points1 point ago

I was always the one making the horse sound at the end

[–]orangeson58 -1 points0 points ago

Everybody always wanted the sleigh bells. I was lucky enough to get them one year.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I wish I had something that could stir up that much determination in me. I'm just a hollow shell, clicking links and laughing at cats.

[–]bminus02 0 points1 point ago

Not sure..but I think I know this guy. He used to play in a death metal band in my high school

[–]smosher13 0 points1 point ago

palmetto?

[–]bminus02 0 points1 point ago

Damn nope. Looks just like the kid tho I swear

[–]NoClipDelux 0 points1 point ago

Epic clap guy? anyone, anyone... nevermind

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

i like the guy to his right, "everyone's sick of your shit, tyrone."

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It's not nice to pick on the differently able'd

[–]Brucethematt 0 points1 point ago

We don't use our mouths to play so as a result most percussionists have some sort of 'playing face'. Most are quite humorous.

[–]bigpballa14 0 points1 point ago

fuck ya! clap that shit! clap the shit out of it!

[–]Faithfulmirror 0 points1 point ago

What is the Asian guy from the black eyed peas doing in a matching band

[–]holtzapplea 0 points1 point ago

I literaly LOL'd.

[–]Billy_Sastard 0 points1 point ago

I knew Michael Jackson wasn't dead, the sneaky bugger.

[–]PLOVAPODA 0 points1 point ago

PIT PERCUSSION-- FUCK YEAH MARIMBAS WOOOOO

[–]uepvup 0 points1 point ago

dont mess with the mothafucking cymbals

[–]bmfa02 0 points1 point ago

He's "performing." It's part of the trade off you get for standing and playing your instrument. That said, fuck yeah slap sticks. Rock.

[–]blackgrrl23 0 points1 point ago

I played Lisa's solo on the Simpsons song for my Junior year- my favorite solo EVER. I was a first chair jazz band player too- but had the most fun in marching band!

[–]thefieldsofdawn 0 points1 point ago

Finally my hobby is being appreciated on reddit

[–]emohipster 0 points1 point ago

I'm laughing so hard at this. Fuck. Saving this entire page.

[–]mark-henry 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me or does that guy look like Bassnectar

[–]4realthistime 0 points1 point ago

Huh? Im tryin to see dat ass in the yellow spandex

[–]emstobro 0 points1 point ago

michael jackson does drumline?

[–]Derpatron30m 0 points1 point ago

I think it needs a little more cowbell, in my opinion.

[–]timo103 0 points1 point ago

... Stelio Kontos?

[–]Nyawk 0 points1 point ago

Why is Michael Jackson angry at that model plane?

[–]membersonlyjacket01 0 points1 point ago

Sort of unrelated, but why are band uniforms so universally unflattering? I'm not a fashion-forward person by any means, but I've never seen one I thought looked remotely nice on anyone.

High school music funds are continuously going down the drain, so we can't afford cool uniforms like those worn by DCI or DCA groups.

Most high school ones are bad, look up the DCI ones, they are always good.

I once was told to play the triangle "as if god himself were deciding on the ferocity of your playing face as to whether you should live or not". Next competition, the judge said on tape "that triangle player, he's a scary looking sonofagun"

I was the leader of the drumline in high school (center snare). We didn't talk to the pit.

The pit hates you too. Bastards.
