Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

GIVE ME MY KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND MATERIA, YOU BASTARD!

[–]wankmate 34 points35 points ago

My thoughts exactly! Need a gold chocobo to get to that shit.

[–]Rocket92 15 points16 points ago

seriously, what good is a god damn airship if it doesn't get you knights of the round materia?!

[–]iammolotov 11 points12 points ago

"Sir, here is your airship. It can fly forwards, backwards, or even sideways. You can fly over the highest mountains, and even circumnavigate the entire globe in about 7 seconds."

"Great, let's go to that little island out there and get some badass materia."

"I'm sorry sir, but there's a couple trees on that island. There's no possible way we can land anywhere."

[–]atomicspin 2 points3 points ago

Yet, they can climb down a ladder to get in to the crater for the final battle. God, that game was stupid. (I love that game).

[–]TubbyandthePoo-Bah 2 points3 points ago

I wouldn't know, someone wiped my memory card just after I got the airship.

And still slightly bitter 19 years later. =[

[–]mindkiller317 2 points3 points ago

15.

[–]atomicspin 0 points1 point ago

Now I feel really old.

[–]DEZandTROY 9 points10 points ago

Man I miss ff7

[–]McHomans 7 points8 points ago

I saw recently that someone has modded this game to modern graphics and it is a free download. Unfortunately I wasn't on my computer at the time and haven't been able to find the link. Anyone know about this?

[–]fonster_mox 8 points9 points ago

I know linking to Gawker sites can be dangerous in these parts, but I saw it on Kotaku a good couple of days before it hit reddit's front page:

http://kotaku.com/5910318/you-want-your-final-fantasy-vii-hd-remaster-well-here-it-is

[–]TehJonno 2 points3 points ago

I saw the thread about it, but I didn't know there was a free download for it! PLEASE SOMEONE FIND THE SOURCE!

[–]MyLifeIsPointless 5 points6 points ago

Came here hoping to see this. Was not disappointed.

[–]nerdfighterelle 6 points7 points ago

Every god damn time I think I am going to be the clever one! Not every day you see an ffvii comment get to the top.

[–]XombiePrwn 2 points3 points ago

Sigh, I was 10 hours late for this one.

[–]rolfeinarb 5 points6 points ago

I was coming in here thinking "If the Knights of the round reference is not the top of the bunch, its sure is coming right now"

[–]Dantai 4 points5 points ago

Nice reference! Wonder if this island served as an inspiration for that bastard of a place only reached by that damn Golden Chocobo

[–]Ceejae 4 points5 points ago

That, or my Volcano Badge.

[–]thiirteen 31 points32 points ago

So this is where martinis, bikinis and spies come from.

[–]iabhoruserids 67 points68 points ago

Reminded me of The Fire Nation prison Boiling Rock only really pretty :)

[–]RazzleDazzle42 26 points27 points ago

First thing I thought of, and was glad to see that it was the top comment. It also reminded me of the Fire Nation Capital.

[–]SoloJones 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I thought much more of the capitol. Probably what inspired it!

[–]dubs2317 29 points30 points ago

[–]coffeecaseman 24 points25 points ago

flamio hotman, flamio

[–]iabhoruserids 1 point2 points ago

Loved it!

[–]Relephant_Username 1 point2 points ago

At least I'm not the only one who can bask in the gloriousness by thinking this.

[–]Slim_Calhoun 48 points49 points ago

WTF is that grey formation of rock where the road ends?

[–]jabber_of_poo 37 points38 points ago

its to stop erosion(land slides) its a series of concrete squares in the hillside they have these in a lot of land slide prone areas

[–]fightingforair 14 points15 points ago

Confirmed We have them all over Japan.

[–]Platypuskeeper 18 points19 points ago

Just erosion netting due to the obvious landslides. Another picture

[–]hkturner -1 points0 points ago

THIS. THIS. THIS. Why are people still trying to guess? The netting allows the water to escape without taking the mountainside with it.

[–]HimTiser 67 points68 points ago

Minas Tirith

[–]Dondervuist 6 points7 points ago

Here is a view of one of these things from a boat (there are a few on the island). Your guess is still as good as mine. Here is another.

[–]tora22 5 points6 points ago

a quarry? all I could think of.

[–]SgtScream 5 points6 points ago

I came here for this. I am afraid its going to be lost in the comments..

[–]Bickus 12 points13 points ago

Looks like it could be (eg. concrete) reinforcement to save the pathway do that it doesn't get taken out with the adjacent land-slippage?

[–]mokoshina 2 points3 points ago

I'm going to agree with you, looks like there is a path heading down from there also, so makes sense.

[–]900fool 2 points3 points ago

I'm slightly disappointed that its not a hotel built into the cliff face as I initially imagined.

[–]FiL-dUbz 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a variety of things. My best guess is a tourist local thinga-majig. At the bottom of it, there looks to be like a tourist overlook of the sea.

[–]kraftymiles 8 points9 points ago

Battle Royale!

[–]kriekenzero 19 points20 points ago

Whelp. Better get to building this in minecraft.

[–]madevilfish 15 points16 points ago

Anyone else want to have a evil base there to take over the world?

[–]LTman86 8 points9 points ago

Nah, I think a safer bet would be to settle here while the zombie apocalypse is going down.

[–]mypetridish 5 points6 points ago

yes, that is what he said, an evil base.

[–]Inbetweenaction 1 point2 points ago

I will bring my shocktropers and some soda...

[–]ZiegfredZSM 12 points13 points ago

Better known as Monster Island

[–]generalsturgeon 2 points3 points ago

Don't worry, it's just a name

[–]fauxfox 2 points3 points ago

Ya, it's really more of a peninsula.

[–]shutup_Aragorn 3 points4 points ago

This is not an island.... this is a volcano. Hell no I'm not going to live on this fucking island

[–]xenoph2 1 point2 points ago

One would get bored of it in like a few months anyways.

[–]itstheVikShow 16 points17 points ago

I bet there's pokemon on that island.

[–]splein23 0 points1 point ago

The same island used for pokemon snap has also been used in a lot of animes. I have no idea who was first but I remember watching cyborg 009 and saying OMG thats pokemon snap island!

[–]Holyfritolebatman 5 points6 points ago

Bet they have no cell phone reception.

[–]pretzacoatl 2 points3 points ago

it's the capitol city of the Fire Nation

[–]CJG995 2 points3 points ago

Superjail comes to mind. Just me?

[–]kamp_krusty 0 points1 point ago

Superjail

That's all I see in this picture.

[–]TheChrono 2 points3 points ago

For those curious as to how this was created. I'm no geologist but I'm almost sure this type of formation is created when a very large volcano with a large body of magma underneath it erupts and empties the body of magma underneath it.

After the magma is gone, the base of the volcano is unstable and the volcano collapses in onto itself creating a large crater. (Sorry no meteors here)

Then, the magma starts being replenished and a new smaller volcanic dome starts to form inside of the crater.

[–]DiscoOnDeathrow 2 points3 points ago

Yup, it's a volcanic caldera.

[–]cortana 0 points1 point ago

It's a series of like 4 underwater volcanoes, as well as the visible pair of above-ocean calderas.

[–]ballslapper1 2 points3 points ago

Sootopolis anyone?

[–]SH1tango 1 point2 points ago

Same thoughts here. The inland lake seems to have dried up somewhat.

[–]cqss 2 points3 points ago

I said, "how'd you like to live there?', to girlfriend. She said, "NO WAY, IT'S NOT DORMANT!". Is that my Derp or is it cool to live there?

[–]quakank 4 points5 points ago

Still considered a Class-C active volcano by the Japan Meteorological Agency, the last eruption of Aogashima was during a four year period from 1781-1785.

-from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aogashima

No, I also wouldn't live there. Perhaps in the future your girlfriend should make the living decisions.

[–]butterybob 1 point2 points ago

I would. It looks awesome. I figure it's been dormant for a couple hundred years, my odds are pretty good for another few - and there'd likely be some pre-eruption warning.

[–]ouzoholic 2 points3 points ago

tsunami proof!!!

[–]IdiotManChild 2 points3 points ago

Until a large enough tsunami comes along to turn it into the world's largest ocean-side swimming pool...

[–]joshjoshkabosh 2 points3 points ago

Its, Sootopolis City!

[–]d0pp3lg4ng3r27 34 points35 points ago

FYI, 'shima' (or 'jima') on the end of an island name literally means 'island,' so it is wrong to put island afterwards.

Proper title would be: Aogashima, off the coast of Tokyo

Still an awesome pic, so receive an upvote from me anyway.

[–]fetus_salad_sandwich 27 points28 points ago

Not exactly. When translating, it's quite common to add the redundant "island" at the end of it. It's also done with rivers some mountains and bridges. (ie: Asanogawa is technically Asano River, but would be translated to Asanogawa River) I believe the rationale is that nobody would know "Aoga Island" would sound incorrect geographic words like "aogashima" are essentially all one word.

Related English: PIN Number, ATM machine. Redundant, yet accepted.

[–]magnetic_couch 0 points1 point ago

I used to live in Toyama Prefecture in Japan, and got to hike up Tateyama (4th highest mountain in Japan). I went up with a few of my adult English students, and everyone interchanged saying Mount Tate and Mount Tateyama.

It's due to the fact that it's a compound word in Japanese, whereas in English we would have it as separate word.

And just for fun: if we literally translate the Island's name, it is Blue Island (or Isle of Blue if we're being very literal and poetic).

[–]Onelouder 33 points34 points ago

Shim Shima. Who got the keys to my bima!

[–]Ihateyourdick 3 points4 points ago

Beep beep, who got the keys to my Jeep?

[–]panlane 2 points3 points ago

There is a hill in England called Torpenhow Hill, which purportedly means "hillhillhill hill", successive residents with their different languages having mistaken the noun "hill" for a Proper noun and added their own word for hill to the end. A few waves of invaders lately and the name has become ridiculous.

[–]gojirra 12 points13 points ago

I think you are wrong because Aogashima is not an English word, so of course you wouldn't consider what it means in English and what words you can and can't say with it based on that meaning.

You claim you can't say island afterwards, but you also can't say "This is Aoga island," because that is not the name of the island.

Let's say Aoga meant lizard in Japanese. You would not ever say "Have you been to Lizard island?" You never directly translate the names of places into English when referring to them, no matter how "redundant" they may be to people like your self.

[–]Jubjub17 1 point2 points ago

You would not ever say "Have you been to Lizard island?" You never directly translate the names of places into English when referring to them, no matter how "redundant" they may be to people like your self.

You're wrong about this never being the case. Just off the top of my head, 黄河 (huang = yellow, he = river) is translated to Yellow River in English, not Huanghe River. I'm sure there are many other examples.

[–]tiafix 1 point2 points ago

sure, i'll build my resort in the crater of a once-active volcano. what could go wrong? (huuuuurgh)

[–]sylver_dragon 2 points3 points ago

It's Japan, pretty much the whole country is volcanically formed because of a tectonic boundary. Commonly called The Ring of Fire. The iconic Mount Fuji which is about 60 miles from Tokyo, is an active volcano. Also, in the US, we have Yellowstone which will eventually blow and make for a very bad day in the US. And let's also point out Mammoth Lakes, California an entire town, with associated ski resort, which sits on the edge of a rather massive caldera, on top of an active supervolcano.

[–]cortana 2 points3 points ago

Still-active. Last eruption: 1785.

[–]Biff_Kickass666 1 point2 points ago

What a nice spot for a battle royale.

That's one good lookin' caldera.

[–]ThatRollingStone 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of an island from the Tropico series of games.

[–]coowhipp 1 point2 points ago

That would make a fantastic base for a super villain. Or a futuristic theme park where dinosaurs roam wild. I'd call it "Billy's Clonosaurus Island Adventure"

[–]fiercedeity05 1 point2 points ago

all I can think of is From Dust.

[–]livingstranger 1 point2 points ago

The real Tracy Island

Battle Royale, anyone?

[–]Trolling_Stone 1 point2 points ago

I shall use the Ballad of Gales to get there! *Waves wand bought in Islands of Adventure like a faggot. Absolutely nothing happens. Goes back to masturbating.

How much? I'll take it.

[–]evo_bomber 0 points1 point ago

What a paradise, I'd never leave!!

[–]TheOCdisorder 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't look too much like it, but the first thing I thought was that the island where you get the Knights of the round materia at was based on it. After looking online, they're fairly different:

a video showing the island

Aogashima Island

"Aogashima (青ヶ島?) is a volcanic Japanese island in the Philippine Sea, administered by Tokyo and located approximately 358 kilometres (222 mi) south of Tokyo and 64 kilometres (40 mi) south of Hachijō-jima. It is the southernmost and most isolated inhabited island of the Izu archipelago."

It reminds me of the map of Isla Sorna from the novel The Lost World by Michael Crichton. You know, the Jurassic Park sequel.
