Why is Aerosmith trying to free the brain from the chains of religions?

[–]Rusted123 -4 points-3 points ago

bitch please, thats the anarchy symbol. not the punk version, just the anarchy symbol. Aerosmith just uses it.

[–]Roarian 9 points10 points ago

There's something amusing about anti-establishment folks making themselves into a sort of organization with a logo. :P

[–]dumnezero 3 points4 points ago

yeah, they should just write "anarchism", since it's easier and not based on symbols

[–]ohsnapitsrags 1 point2 points ago

You're good.

[–]ComplacentBard 0 points1 point ago

It is actually comprised of eight different symbols.

[–]RepostThatShit 1 point2 points ago

Maybe you should explain the joke a couple more times just to be safe.

[–]Socialist_Asshole 0 points1 point ago

Anarchism is not anti-establishment, anti-organisation, counter-culture, or anything like that.

EDIT: By anti-establishment, I assume you mean anti-establishinganorganisedsocialstructure, and not anti-thecurrentsystem

[–]smileymalaise 0 points1 point ago

Thank you. Anarchism is basically the knowledge that we can take care of ourselves... because we are smart enough to.

[–]Rusted123 0 points1 point ago

I agree.

[–]spagettaboutit 6 points7 points ago

the wings really make it point in the Aerosmith direction though

[–]olFashionedLoser 1 point2 points ago

[–]Rusted123 0 points1 point ago

thats true.

[–]SydTheDrunk -2 points-1 points ago

That's funny, the first band I thought of while looking at this was Pink Floyd.

[–]Ryman73 2 points3 points ago

This reminds me of those brain aliens from Futurama.

[–]Rhys345 2 points3 points ago

"I AM THE GREETEST!"

[–]Roarian 0 points1 point ago

Or it's Brainguy's - can someone call the Mads?

[–]SPOCK165 7 points8 points ago

Makes a good point... Maybe anarchy holds the key to our freedom

[–]firenzest 7 points8 points ago

No, this captures the smugness of /r/atheism perfectly

[–]IAMTHESHNIZ 2 points3 points ago

Repost.

[–]Rusted123 7 points8 points ago

why is the anarchy symbol freeing the brain from religions?

[–]dumnezero 0 points1 point ago

[–]brovine[S] -2 points-1 points ago

It's similar, but it's not the same. Generally anarchy is outside of the lines. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7HENoKuh6Hg/T3PpTLgAN6I/AAAAAAAAG3I/7jUPX2miHc4/s1600/anarchy1.jpg

[–]sourpatchcat 5 points6 points ago

The traditional Anarcho symbol is inside the lines.

[–]dumnezero 2 points3 points ago

Don't worry man, it's anarchist, but we know that you were thinking about atheist. They actually go very well together ;)

[–]Socialist_Asshole 0 points1 point ago

I'm afraid that's the stylized "anarcho-punk" circle-A.

[–]Rusted123 0 points1 point ago

it is the anarchy symbol. the one outside of the lines is the most famous one, because it is used by punk rockers. but the anarchy symbol is just an a inside of a circle, whether there is extra lines or not.

[–]thatisnotchicago -2 points-1 points ago

A man trying to stop people from being mislead doesn't even know what he's leading them too. Check the symbolism before you post, I now believe anarchism is the key. symbol

Well said. Being religious doesn't mean you're close minded, and being atheist doesn't mean you're open minded. Both groups have plenty of both.

[–]ThisOpenFist -1 points0 points ago

Everyone just hangs out here because r/agnosticism isn't a default subreddit.

[–]dumnezero 1 point2 points ago

I don't know if I should subscribe to /r/agnosticism or not.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]dumnezero 1 point2 points ago

thank you for proving "agnosticism" supporters don't have a sense of humor!

[–]MapleSyrupIsAwesome 1 point2 points ago

Most of us are agnostic atheists?

[–]ThisOpenFist 0 points1 point ago

Maybe, but I always get the feeling that the most vocal of you are the positive atheists.

[–]MapleSyrupIsAwesome 0 points1 point ago

Ask next time. Gnostic Atheists tend to be rather rare. You must understand that most of us are agnostic about the existence of gods in the same way that we are agnostic about the existence of faeries in our gardens, so unless we are actually asked about our gnostic/agnostic status we will generally appear to be gnostic because we don't consider the possibility to be worthy of discussion in the slightest.

(also many of us consider the Abraham god to be plainly impossible, so ask about gods not "god")

[–]ThisOpenFist 1 point2 points ago

A single entity isn't impossible. An entity that once talked directly to us and tried to kill us all on several occasions is highly improbable.

[–]MapleSyrupIsAwesome 0 points1 point ago

Exactly.

[–]walabond -2 points-1 points ago

woot woot more of you in r/atheism plz

[–]m3nace 0 points1 point ago

[–]walabond -1 points0 points ago

woot woot, there you go sweetheart

[–]dumnezero 1 point2 points ago

Another trap, with all that atheist dogma and threats of curses and sin and eternal punishment!

[–]Roarian 1 point2 points ago

I think that both religious and irreligious can get themselves trapped by nonsense or actually have an open mind - though I do think that religion more easily lends itself to being an easy answer to stop thinking than an atheist might have (which is probably why 'atheist extremists', unlike the religious version tend not to be concentrated on that single belief itself but politics or what have you.)

[–]TheRollingBones -2 points-1 points ago

Thank you. I am a Christian, but I check this subreddit out now and again, and it bugs me to no end all the people on here that constantly imply that being religious MUST mean you're an idiot, and declaring yourself an atheist instantly raises your IQ 100 points

[–]dumnezero 0 points1 point ago

who says that? show me the quote

[–]Kickinthegonads 0 points1 point ago

I say this. Often. And mean it. It's usually true too, which makes it carry it just a tad more weight. I'm sure The RollingBones isn't an idiot, it's just that Christians usually, you know, ARE idiots. I just said it again, didn't I?

[–]dumnezero 0 points1 point ago

Yes, well you are 1 datapoint.

[–]Kickinthegonads 1 point2 points ago

True, and while I may be terribly wrong (I'm not though) I was merely answering your question truthfully /trolloff

[–]BUT_OP_WILL_DELIVER -1 points0 points ago

It's the 'key' to not being satisfied with the answer "Goddunnit" to life's questions and having your morality and behaviour shaped by brutal, immoral iron-age thinking. A lack of belief in a deity is not a 'trap' unless you care to justify how a lack of belief in fictional entities is a mental trap?

Remember: the opposite extreme of religion IS atheism.

Evidently. What is your point?

[–]JoePrau96 5 points6 points ago

i think religion is more like listening to one guy try to read a map drawn on a back of an old napkin out of crayon, while atheism is looking at the map and saying "umm i don't think that is accurate... or even close to accurate"

[–]groylott 1 point2 points ago

Repost, but fuck it, have an upvote anyway. Also the profile pic for my Atheist group on Facebook.

[–]g3rshik 1 point2 points ago

I was once Jewish. They don't lie to you (that much), they educate you. Probably why I became an atheist.

[–]dumnezero 0 points1 point ago

You wouldn't happen to live somewhere in the occupied territories in an illegal building now, would you?

[–]anonxtian 1 point2 points ago

It is all about freedom baby.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

its so..... straight foreword. don't get me wrong i like this picture, but it bothers me how its just like "BAM! religion doesn't let you think."

[–]dumnezero -1 points0 points ago

Oh, you can think. You just can't think past the chains.

[–]savvy422 1 point2 points ago

What did the wicans do?

[–]dumnezero 1 point2 points ago

The fly around the brain like a butterfly around a flower

[–]walabond 0 points1 point ago

hmm, camera lens coffee mug. interesting

[–]InterestingChoice 1 point2 points ago

I tend to see just as many atheists being held back from "intelligent thinking" as any religion. The problem is that people on every side take it to such an extreme as to cause animosity towards the other groups. Just because someone is Atheist, Christian, Muslim, or whatever their choice in beliefs does not make them an "idiot" or "ignorant". It just means they made a different choice than you. Respect them for their choice and move on. If they give you a hard time then move on faster and ignore them.

[–]dumnezero -2 points-1 points ago

atheism is not a religion

[–]LumbarSupport 2 points3 points ago

Nobody said it was.

[–]dumnezero -1 points0 points ago

I have to contest the accuracy of that negative affirmation

[–]InterestingChoice 1 point2 points ago

I am not implying atheism is a religion.

[–]dumnezero -1 points0 points ago

. Just because someone is Atheist, Christian, Muslim

you make a list of similar items; atheism does not belong in that list. If you can't figure that out, you have a problem.

[–]InterestingChoice 0 points1 point ago

Please make sure to quote me in context and not just pieces that you feel support your cause. You are starting to sound a lot like many Christians who quote a single verse in the bible to prove their point but fail to take in the whole of what is said.

What I said: "Just because someone is Atheist, Christian, Muslim, or whatever their choice in beliefs does not make them an "idiot" or "ignorant". "

Please understand that Atheism is disbelief in a deity. This would mean that Atheism is a belief that there is no deity. Also please note that I referred to all the above as beliefs and not as religions. By classifying them under the umbrella of "what people believe" I am accurately portraying each of them.

[–]dumnezero 0 points1 point ago

Your reply is enough for any local redditor to figure out why you're wrong. Thanks!

What about Buddhism?

[–]thomasdemaster 0 points1 point ago

Budhism is more a way of life

[–]dumnezero -1 points0 points ago

the religion or the philosophy?

[–]olFashionedLoser 0 points1 point ago

Aerosmith!?

[–]SexyGingerKid 0 points1 point ago

What the fuck this is like the 4th time I've seen this picture

[–]itsTREX 0 points1 point ago

I'm not against atheism here, but please do show some respect to others' beliefs. You wouldn't be any different from those Christians holding up signs of hatred. RESPECT, yo. nuff said. :)

[–]alphalaz 0 points1 point ago

An "A" with wings. Like an angel? Pfff...

[–]Frywad32 1 point2 points ago

No no you misread, Aerosmith is the key to our minds.

[–]alphalaz 0 points1 point ago

I'm fine with that.

[–]ChipJiggins 0 points1 point ago

That scarlet letter has the key to my pants.

[–]donumabdeo 0 points1 point ago

how about this one here

I don't have anything against a lack of government, I think we would be better off without one, than having what we do now, but I'm not for tearing down de facto powers that be.

[–]aquaknox 0 points1 point ago

So the brain is a weather balloon?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Why is the symbol of Judaism tied to the shortest chain? I cannot see that religion doing quite as much damage as the other two.

[–]Rusted123 0 points1 point ago

damn. i started a arguement about anarchy on a aethiest post. im good.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

John 8:34, 36

Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Everyone practicing sin is a slave of sin.

Therefore, if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed.

2 Peter 2:18-19, 10-17

For speaking over-swollen words of vanity, by the lusts of the flesh, by unbridled lusts, they allure those indeed escaping, the ones walking in error,

promising to them freedom, though themselves being slaves of corruption; for by whom anyone has been overcome, even to this one he has been enslaved.

and most of all those going after flesh in the lust of defilement, and despising rulership, darers, self-pleasing; they do not tremble at glories, speaking evil;

where angels being greater in strength and power do not bring against them a reproaching charge before the Lord.

But these as unreasoning natural beasts, having been born for capture and corruption, speaking evil in that of which they are ignorant, they shall utterly perish in their corruption,

being about to receive the wages of unrighteousness, having deemed indulgence in the day to be pleasure; spots and blemishes reveling in their deceits, feasting along with you,

having eyes full of an adulteress, and never ceasing from sin; alluring unsettled souls; having a heart being busied with covetousness; cursed children;

forsaking a straight path, they went astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness,

but had reproof of his own transgression, the dumb ass speaking in a man's voice held back the madness of the prophet.

These are springs without water, clouds being driven by tempest, for whom the blackness of darkness has been kept to the ages.

[–]dumnezero 0 points1 point ago

The picture is with a brain. Not with a soul, because we have no evidence for souls, no pictures of souls, no souls to be studied in lab.

So picture there's no soul, there's nothing there, Jesus is a big pile of chains you drag around in a knot around nothing. something like this, just weighing you down.

[–]Nyrin -1 points0 points ago

I think this would make more sense and feel less forced if the padlock, key, and atheist symbol were all omitted.

The point is that religion is constraining thought, right? It should be up to the viewer to fill in the blanks of "hmm, if there were no religion..."

As it is, this just plays directly into the hands of the tired, old "atheism is a belief" argument, and doesn't do much to make "believers" think twice.

[–]dumnezero 0 points1 point ago

Wait... you see the unchaining of the mind as a re-chaining of the mind? That's your argument?

[–]moriquendo -1 points0 points ago

Unfortunately, once they have used the key, many don't go on and use the brain. :-(

[–]breezyent -1 points0 points ago

Holy shit, as a very confused individual and woman that was raised by hardcore Baptist Christians, this is about as accurate as it gets.

I wish I could let go of my fear and grasp hold of what I know is reality.
