Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

To be honest, I didn't even know that was possible.

Heavy cloud cover gives a backdrop, as we know from batman and planes shadows can be cast on clouds... The setting sun lowers the lights enough so diffusion doesn't blot out the shadow, and for a rare moment the sun is in a position below the mountaintop, if calculated from the base/top of the mountain relative to the horizon.

So it is unlikely, and [edit: most of the time ]it will be above or parallel the mountain and cast a shadow down, be too bright or have nothing to project against. Since the mountain exists on the surface is is actually a very small window where it could cast a shadow up like this, but since the earth is round the light can... I don't know the mathematical term, but here is a visual example culled from the net (http://chestofbooks.com/architecture/Cyclopedia-Carpentry-Building-4-6/images/JANUARY-29-9-0-HERBERT-CHANDLER-CH-CAGO-LL-PLATE-VII.jpg). See problem 18 So if you drew a tony tiny triangle on that sphere you can see how only at a specific angle it would cast a shadow.

"As we know from Batman" hahaha

[–]IMasturbateToMyself 92 points93 points ago

Not only he fights crime, he also educate us without us knowing. Truly a hero that we deserve.

[–]spenonta 36 points37 points ago

But not the one we need right now.

[–]AranOnline 46 points47 points ago

Oh no, we definitely need Batman. Right now.

[–]cmoneywinner 37 points38 points ago

Nice try, Christopher Nolan.

Background music for reading

Batman sits atop a ledge overlooking New Gotham, Texas, and his eyes fall upon a building with a single office light left on in the dead of night. His eyes narrow and a look of anger fills his face.

Lamar Smith is sitting quietly at his desk, going over his list of how to ruin the internet and jotting down notes when suddenly CRASH BOOM BANG! A cloud of dust and smoke fills the room and broken glass falls to the floor. Lamar Smith falls down coughing, he blindly feels his way around the smokey damaged office on his hands and knees, looking for the exit when he bumps in to a pair of dark black boots.

Batman picks him up by his neck tie and stares in to his eyes, as if looking for his impurities and selfishness. "What did I do?!" yells a stunned and confused Lamar. "You've done the worst thing possible in a country founded on free speech" says Batman quietly. He is then dragged off the Arkham Asylum where Lamar will spend the rest of his days, safely locked up, so he can do no more damage to the world.

Another crooked criminal off the streets of America!

Pretty sure it's a sunrise

[–]10tonGoldfish 64 points65 points ago

Oh. Well reverse everything I just said, and then make it exactly the same.

[–]JAYFLO 14 points15 points ago

which one of those circles is the death star

[–]superexcellent12 9 points10 points ago

How can you tell? I don't recognize what direction this photo is shot from (which is shameful because I'm from Seattle).

[–]Kazgard 5 points6 points ago

Based on the mountain's silhouette in the first photo at http://www2.andrews.edu/~schwab/mtns.html, it would seem that the OP photo was also shot from the west, making it a sunrise.

[–]superexcellent12 3 points4 points ago

I see. Good show. Also: I think it's funny that the title of the site you just cited is "My First Web Page."

[–]Kazgard 3 points4 points ago

I noticed that as well. The teal background certainly does nothing for its credibility, either. I'd like to believe that Bob was too busy scaling every mountain in sight to be bothered with bgcolors or headers.

[–]klitorisaurus 1 point2 points ago

Lifelong Washingtonian here, and I can confirm its most definitely a sunrise. Any location with this view of the east side of the mountain would most certainly be devoid of trees since desert and farmland span 150+ miles from the foot of the cascades.

[–]Sly_Grammarian 1 point2 points ago

It looks to me like the peak to the left is Liberty Cap, and from the alignment of the three peaks, I'd guess It was shot from the direction of somewhere between Tacoma and Olympia.

[–]Aww_Shucks 12 points13 points ago

[–]metalmilitia182 5 points6 points ago

[–]redditonmyphone 2 points3 points ago

99.9 percent seems a bit low. The 0.1 pc left amounts to 8 hours and 46 minutes per year during which this phenomenon would appear...

[–]10tonGoldfish 8 points9 points ago

I'm not very into hard math so I don't think in absolutes and was using hyperbole, but you're right. Edited.

I actually doubted it would be visible more than 8 hours a year but as I said I have no way of actually calculating or inferring that, it was just assumption.

[–]fuccimama79 3 points4 points ago

I think it'd be more relevant to think of how many days per year have cloud cover that supports this during the sunset, since the time of day is a given. The clouds are very close-about 100 feet above- to the mountain top. How many days a year have an overcast ceiling that matches the height of the mountain so? I'd say it happens once every few years. A rare find indeed.

World Biggest Sun Dial

[–]spokesthebrony 47 points48 points ago

A couple years ago, during winter, I was driving and noticed a strange shadow on the high blanket of clouds right at sunset. It was sort of wedge-shaped and had very distinct edges. Then it hit me: it was coming from the direction of Mt Rainier. But I was on Highway 2 between Spokane and Davenport, which is something like 250 miles from the mountain, so far that you can't see the mountain itself.

TL;DR: Mt. Rainier might be able to cast sky shadows to almost Idaho.

On a related note, at sunset, on just the right days when it's clear, the sun sets behind Mt. Rainier, making the mountain extremely visible from as far away as Moses Lake.

Edit: Found a low-res copy of the picture I took of it

[–]claysumj 19 points20 points ago

I've heard that during the summer months, the summit of Mt Rainier is the last place of anywhere in the continental US for the sun to set. Kind of cool to think about.

[–]jwestbury 2 points3 points ago

If you're curious whether or not that's really from Rainier, you could send a message to Cliff Mass, a UW meteorologist, who might be interested in posting a blog topic on this.

[–]SI_Bot 1 point2 points ago

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest this mountain has a special place in my heart for it. Thanks for the amazing picture!

[–]ch0och 23 points24 points ago

Its funny how much I take it for granted, then on a bright day in August... BAM! It towers over I-5 and takes your breath away.

EDIT: I type poorly.

[–]hinduguru 45 points46 points ago

/r/Earthporn is awesome, but a lot of redditors use it to karmawhore. i've been a voracious subscriber and will continue to frequent the subreddit, it just sucks to see people like p_i_m_a repost over and over

Edit: fuck i just realized i'm beginning to sound like everyone else

[–]smartbomb314 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, say hi to the life of Mind_Virus, who recently changed his name to Suriv_dnim. He reposts and reposts (mostly from earthporn) until his accounts get to 1,000,000 karma. At which point he sells them. He needs a girlfriend.

Traveled to the West Coast for the first time this past March... Passing by Mount Rainier was one of the most amazing experiences of the trip.

[–]Nurdeek 18 points19 points ago

March? And the MT was out? I call shenanigans!!

Actually, you are very fortunate to have seen it. It is covered by clouds a lot. Especially in the spring, and summer, and fall, and winter... ;}

[–]albinobluesheep 2 points3 points ago

Especially in the spring, and summer, and fall, and winter...

I had to smile, cuz yeah...

[–]JasonGD1982 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I live 1 hour from mt St Helens and I only see it when the weather is nice. But on a good day I can see Mt Hood too.

[–]hayhayteejay 1 point2 points ago

It was BEAUTIFUL!!! I have pictures... Everyone in Seattle/Portland/Everywhere me and my travel group went said that we were SO lucky to have the weather we did..

[–]Nurdeek 1 point2 points ago

You were indeed! This lifelong resident, under her shadow all that time, has not been so lucky.

Well, I can see her any day that she's out(not often), and I'm out and about(less often), but every single time I have flown, all I saw was clouds...

Isn't it a marvel to view?

Very unlikely that he's a Washintonian; he's a conspicuously prolific reposter who collects front page material and reposts it in an unending torrent.

Gets disappointing to see stuff on the front page that was just there about a week ago, but I suppose if it shares it with that many people who missed it the previous time around it's not exactly a terrible thing.

[–]Imakers 11 points12 points ago

I live in Olympia, Washington and I love the fact we get to see this beautiful mountain everyday. Great photo.

[–]AP3Brain 1 point2 points ago

Yeah me too... Been living here all my life and always enjoyed that mountain... Also always have thoughts of what would happen if it erupted and how much would it effect us in Oly.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Mount Rainier, you say? Looks more like Mordor.

[–]ThomasElGring0 3 points4 points ago

It seems Mordor is quite pretty this time of year. I don't know what Boromir's fuss was all about.

[–]derekmyoung 4 points5 points ago

I live near Mt Rainier. We get so much cloud cover around here that "The mountain is out" is an actual expression. Like it's strolling down the block giving a quicky howdy-do to the neighbors.

EDIT: Should not be a "y" at the end of "quick." Makes that sentence sound dirty.

[–]simbonk 9 points10 points ago

note to self, remember to throw that lost ring I found in the flames of mount doom.

[–]DepressedRacoon 4 points5 points ago

I know that this is in Washington state wholly from Red vs Blue.

[–]ZeroVII 4 points5 points ago

Very cool, but I don't think "mindblowing" is the correct adjective there. "Beautiful" or "Magnificent," maybe, but I don't see what about this picture is incomprehensible.

[–]roger_ranter 3 points4 points ago

"Soon."

On a geologic timescale, at least. This is just Ranier's reminder that it's just a matter of time before it royally fucks up our shit.

[–]jstev612 7 points8 points ago

It really is a beautiful mountain. I did some training at JBLM and and waking up before dawn and seeing the mountain turn different colors as the sun came up was always beautiful. What really makes it fantastic is the fact that it sticks out so much, there's no mountain range or anything, just this huge motherfucker coming up out of the pine trees.

[–]spokesthebrony 4 points5 points ago

Well, there is a mountain range there (the Cascades), but all the non-volcanic peaks in the state usually keep themselves below nine thousand feet so all the volcanic peaks over ten thousand really stand out. And Mount Rainier is over five thousand feet taller than the mountains surrounding it.

[–]MisterSquirrel 4 points5 points ago

And if you hike the Wonderland trail that encircles it, you are reminded that it's a volcano because you can see it actively venting steam from near its peak.

[–]Radico87 2 points3 points ago

when the angles line up just right, we get to see some really amazing sights - this among them.

[–]StewieBanana 2 points3 points ago

The only way this picture could be more awesome was if that shadow was a rainbow.

I live in the county about 40 minutes from Mt. Hood (relatively close to Mt. Rainier), and these stunning scenes happen most mornings! I'm really lucky to live here in the Pacific Northwest! So beautiful

I love looking at this picture and then looking outside and seeing Mt. Rainier. It really is a great mountain.

I have never seen clouds cover the entire sky before. This is amazing.

As an ex-Seattleite, I think I would feel right at home over there in the UK.

[–]couggrl 1 point2 points ago

As a current almost Seattleite, I think it would still be like home for that.

[–]Eustis 27 points28 points ago

Wait..really?

[–]HE_WHO_STANDS_TO_POO 3 points4 points ago

Yes. Really.

[–]IFuckedABearOnce 41 points42 points ago

Take a trip to Seattle.

[–]baker1289 1 point2 points ago

Do we have to bang a bear?

[–]rexington_ 3 points4 points ago

That's Russia. If only Seattle were this hardcore.

[–]IFuckedABearOnce 3 points4 points ago

Ppppfffft.... Russian bears are small and inadequate compared to the grizzlies here.

[–]Sillymemeuser 1 point2 points ago

What they lack in size they make up for with their ability to survive in Russia.

[–]spokesthebrony 9 points10 points ago

Well, Seattle has 100% cloud cover at least once a week except during August. And there will be weeks in November where we don't see the sun.

[–]ZoophagousManiac 1 point2 points ago

There will be weeks in June where we don't see the sun.

Do you live in the Sahara desert?

The Atacama, perhaps? Oh, my God; are those astrophysicists raising their own slaves!?

[–]NewSwiss 4 points5 points ago

TIL mountains could cast shadows on THE SKY

[–]MUSIC_ELITIST 10 points11 points ago

Well actually the shadow is being cast on low altitude cloud cover.

[–]Miltage 1 point2 points ago

Get out of here with your logic!

[–]QueIsUseless 1 point2 points ago

What, you're a music elitist, AND a science snob?

[–]antonivs 1 point2 points ago

Low altitude cloud cover IN THE SKY

[–]ktvplumbs 1 point2 points ago
